The year is starting off at a rapid pace. The New Mexico State Legislature is in session and a bill to change the way the state disposes horses has been introduced. HB 390 will give horse rescues the first right of refusal for equines found at-large, surrendered or abandoned. This replaces the current process which is fraught with danger of horses entering the slaughter pipeline. The New Mexico Equine Rescue Alliance (of which FCER is a member, and co-chair) stands in solid support of this bill. More information is available on our website. In 2015 over 125,000 horses were exported from the US to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered. For some reason this atrocity seems to have vanished from the spotlight. But there is a measure of good to be found amongst this dire background. People are stepping up across the United States. We must. The lives of the horses depend on all of us. The values we hold dear require us to do what we can. Please take a moment to fill out and send in your membership form for If you are able, come on out to FCER and spend some time volunteering. If you are not able to do that, there are other ways to help. For example, you can spread the word about our efforts. Or maybe hold a benefit fundraiser for FCER at work or school. FCER is currently looking for a team to step up our adoption program through marketing. The more horses we adopt out the more horses we can take in and help. Above - Drifter a buckskin stallion successfully removed from the auction to slaughter pipeline by FCER in Drifter has been adopted and lives in Las Cruces. And finally, there is one little thing that sure perks us up here at the rescue - it s when we receive a donation in the mail and there is a little note from the donor supporting our efforts. 2 2017 Issue I Page 2 A Valentine s Letter from Aunt Jo Dear Sweet Stuff & Mystery Valentiner, Look at our picture, Aunt Jo, greet Mickey and Nina. I love this photo of Muddy Mickey and Prissy Nina with a Valentine crown. Do you two know about Valentines? Aunt Jo asks. Yes indeed. We with the program. replies Nina. We like heart cookies and heart pretties. adds Mickey. Want to hear a Valentine story? Mickey starts, Last night a brown horse appeared in the Barn. He had a cape on his back and a mail sack. He asked, Excuse me - is this FCER? Yes Sir. Nina said. Good. My name is Falcon and I have a Special Delivery for Mickey and Nina. That s us, Nina giggled What do you have? I have Valentines. See. said Falcon. Standing close to Falcon we got a good look at the cape on his back. Jumping Jelly Beans, whispers Mickey. Those are wings, not a cape! What s the deal Falcon? Wow! Adds Nina with big eyes. Such shiny feathers. Do you fly? Yes, certainly. Flying is my business, replies Falcon. Besides, it s fun and fast. You can watch me soar when I leave. First open the bag. It s loaded with Valentines, urged Falcon. Oh look, there s heart treats that smell like apples. Wowzie! And here s a crown with hearts for you, said a very excited Mickey. Who sent these valentines, Falcon? No idea, replied Falcon. Clearly someone nice loves you a bunch. Here, Falcon. Eat one of our treats, offers Nina shyly. Thank you Nina, replied Falcon. Yum! You are so kind. Time for me to get going - time to fly. Come outside and see. Thank you, Falcon. Happy Valentine s Day, we shouted. Falcon flicked his tail, trotted a short ways, unfolded his huge wings, and soared over the tree tops, reported Mickey. That was the greatest thing I ve ever seen. His wings were awesome, said Nina. I want to be cool like Falcon. I want big wings, added bright eyed Mickey. Finally readers, we love our mystery Valentiner. Is it you? Thanks. 3 2017 Issue I Page 3 Help Wanted! Construction Zone - Capital Project for Summer 2017 Replacing existing fences with pipe is this years capital project. We are targeting four pens that currently use fence panels. Work will consist of (1) measuring and cutting the posts and rails, (2) digging the holes for posts and cementing in and (3) welding the new rails on. Pilares Arches Trail Ride - October 28th, Event Team members needed! The Pilares Arches Trail Ride date is set! It may seem far away, but now is the time to start planning! Volunteers are needed for all aspects of putting on this ride - including: Forms & Flyers Design Marketing - radio, print & social media Mapping the trails BBQ Lunch Door Prizes Raffle Items Event Sponsors AND - rumor has it that we may be adding a second canyon to this event IF we can get it scouted out! 4 2017 Issue I Page 4 Solar Water Troughs Thanks to a generous grant we were able to purchase two 42 gallon solar heated water troughs. Designed to be used year-round, the solar panel is covered up in the summer to keep the water cool. Currently we spend much time and money replacing and repairing the damage to the electrical cords and heaters. We are excited to put the new water troughs into use and anticipate they will simplify our current water tank heating system. Not to mention reduce the electric bill! We will assist wherever, whenever we can to help a horse that needs rescuing. We believe that horses hold a special place in God s world, and that helping them is a noble effort. We further dedicate ourselves to educating people on the care, medical needs, and other aspects of good horse ownership, thereby improving the lives of the horses and their owners. The Cleveland Bay Society of America was founded in 1885, and over 2,000 horses were registered by There are now fewer than 180 purebreds in North America as listed in the Livestock Conservancy. Buffalo Bill Cody was among those interested in the breed, and he drove a hitch of four Cleveland Bay stallions in his Wild West Show. Cleveland Bays are always bay in color with no white markings except an occasional small star. The horses stand hands (64-68") at the withers and weigh pounds. Sound, durable feet are characteristic of the breed, as is a calm disposition. The Cleveland Bay gives an overall impression of dignity and strength.
