1 November 2013 Horse Tales The Monthly Newsletter of Poway Valley Riders Association The Spirit of Volunteering When I joined PVRA in 1994, I had a lot of fun volunteering. I would go to Gymkhanas and work just to get to know people. I worked Hunter Jumper shows, Dressage shows, and the Rodeo. I showed up for work parties. Sure I got my 48 hours, but I also made friends and built myself a community, and a support network for raising my horse crazy daughter. In every organization, it seems like there are a few that forge the backbone, that make it strong. At PVRA, it s the few who show up consistently for work parties or who support our shows through working. While there are a few Non-Working membership, it is the working family that makes up the majority of PVRA memberships. It saddens me that the spirit of the PVRA community based around the work party seems to be completely gone from PVRA. At the October meeting when I asked for Volunteers to show up to help remove the barriers around the dressage arena only three people raised their hands. This is de- November Calendar 2 Classified Ads 3 spite the fact that dozens of people at a prior meeting said that we needed to barricade the arena to protect the footing. Yet these members declined to show up to the work party to either put up the barricade or to remove it. Upcoming, we will need to replace the kickboards for Arena 2. We will need at least two work parties for that. If no one shows up for these work parties, the work will not proceed and PVRA will be forced to close that arena. Unless we get support for work parties, I fear that PVRA will have to raise its dues substantially, increase the cost of unworked work hours or go to a single membership of a non-working rate and hire people to do all the work normally done by work parties to keep this facility operational. For those who barely manage to keep afloat with the cost of a horse, that may be a severe hardship. John South is watering and dragging. Jeff Hedcock will water/drag after Joust. And Allan Shoeman will get trained. Need to find out if any of these people will commit to certain days to make sure major arenas are getting maintenance. Right now Ring 2 is especially not getting dragged, only some water.
