1 Poway Valley Riders Association March 2107 Horse Tales TIPS TO PREPARE FOR YOUR NEXT HORSE SHOW Horse shows are a chance to showcase all the hard work you and your horse have put in at home. So after hours of training and practice, what else can you do to make sure the show will be as enjoyable an experience as possible? Here are some suggestions that may help you before you ever step foot in the show ring. 1. Pick Your Shows Wisely Do your homework before deciding on what show to compete at. Are there classes available that are appropriate for your skill level and that of your horse? The more you know about the show, the better you can manage your expectations and have a positive experience. 2. Show Day Logistics If you re planning on working off the trailer for an all day ship-in show, does your horse need a trailer buddy to keep him calm? Not sure, bring one just in case. The last thing you need is for your horse to be upset on the trailer with hours to go until your class is scheduled to start. If the weather is going to be warm, bring plenty of water from home (some horses are finicky about drinking water at new locations). 3. Bring a Trainer or Friend We all need an extra set of hands when we go to a show. If you bring a friend, even if they aren t well versed in horses, they can help you hold your horse, unload your equipment off the trailer, and do a last minute boot shine and hoof polishing prior to you stepping into the ring. Your trainer can help you learn the courses (if showing over fences), come up with a plan for how you are going to approach your course and give you constructive feedback following your classes. If possible, spend some time ringside with your trainer watching other riders show. You can learn as much from watching as from actually showing. 4. Make Sure You re Prepared If your horse acts like an orangutan at home, things aren t likely to change once you get to the horse show. A change in scenery isn t going to magically make a horse progress in his skill set. Likewise just because your horse can jump one 3 6 jump doesn t mean you are ready to go to a show and do a course of 3 6 jumps. Know your limitations. It s much better to show at a lower level and be successful, than to put you and your horse in a situation you aren t prepared for. Everything you do at home should prepare you for the test of a horse show. If you can t do it at home don t try to do it at a show. 5. Make a List Check it Twice Your horse show packing list will vary based on what type of showing you will be doing. However there are a few basics everyone should take with them including health paperwork (negative Coggins and/or health certificate), membership cards, grooming supplies, tack, first aid kit for horse and rider, horse blankets/sheets and your show clothes. As things can get hectic the day of the horse show, try to make a list ahead of time and load your trailer and car prior to the early morning rush. 7. Relax. Horse shows are supposed to be fun. Regardless of what level you compete at, horse shows demand too much time and money for you not to enjoy yourself. Take a deep breath and relax. You re enjoying a day off the farm with your horse. If you re nervous or stressed out, your horse will pick up that negative energy and be nervous as well. Butterflies in the stomach don t have to be a bad thing. Turn that energy around and use it to walk in the ring and show everyone what you can do. Take a few minutes before you walk into the ring to visualize how you want your ride to be. Just remember keep it positive, don t second guess your decisions once you are in the ring. What s Important Remember at the end of the show day, it s not the ribbon count that matters! If all you want is ribbons, you can go buy a box full. What s important is knowing that you and your horse gave your all. Make realistic goals that you will take pride in achieving, no matter how the judge rewards your ride. Best of luck as you saddle up for your next show! 4 JANUARY BOARD HIGHLIGHTS 4 Called to order by Nancy Kirchhofer, 7:08 PM. Present: Nancy K., Ann T., Gillian, Trish, Murray, Kasey, Daniel Absent: Dani, Veronica Recognition of Guests: Marcia Kipp, here to give a special presentation. Background: Marcia works in records/forms/paperwork. She is here to give a presentation on choosing membership type, based on anecdotal information that if we change it, dissatisfied members will come back. She distributed an information packet on other clubs. Other clubs in San Diego were described. Properties (facilities offered, cost of upkeep) and memberships are not equal. Per Marcia, people feel like they are being forced into something (i.e., a membership) that doesn t fit. About 12 people are involved in this, but no names are given. There ensued a long discussion of the merits and drawbacks of this idea, including that this would result in increased membership cost for everyone to offset the lower dues. Are people avoiding PVRA? Why do the kids not come to the show? A discussion ensued. Under new management Fun Shows have been revamped to reduce wait times, have more prizes, peewees can warm up separately, no jumping until the flat classes are done, etc. Treasurer s Report: (Gillian) Checking: $6, Money Market: $31, Total: $37, Per Murray, this is one of the lowest totals in a long time. Had to pay insurance. Moved money in anticipation of tractor repair. Motion to approve by Murray, seconded by Daniel, approved. Membership Report: (Nancy) Veronica per phone, Patrick Glass for social member, we have his money. Committee Reports Board Member of the Month February: Gillian Any other: Ann mentioned flutter flag problem (scaring horses on trail on Twin Peaks) at Poway trails meeting. Old Business Bylaws change published in Horse Tales: February vote pending, $12/ hr. for WS, 24 hours to work, one hour at general meetings. Sycamore tree: Okay to remove sycamore tree? It s a safety issue, board agree to proceed with removal. Ben Martins work: Has put a new door and frame on High Voltage shed, it opens with master key. Agreed to paint it when it stops raining. Doors are up on bathrooms, still need knobs, will have to pay him after he s done. Gillian says broken toilet has to be removed from women s bathroom. Ad in Horse Tales for horse show publicity volunteers committee: Need to put an ad in Horse Tales for 2 show publicity volunteers to publish show premiums using social media and distribute hard copies to appropriate stores, starting at 24 hours each with additional hours available depending on success of effort. Need to publicize every show. Need mailing lists for people attending shows to recruit repeat attendance. Use Facebook, Instagram, PVRA s Wild Apricot, (free section of) Horse Trader, other horse clubs, tack stores, Poway News Chieftain (send them articles and photo a month ahead of time). Put up copy of premium on Facebook; needs PVRA tags, verbiage, descriptions, and PVRA overlay frame, to accompany the premiums. Show managers are: Rhonda Morris (HJ), Taya Harrington (gymkhana), Dani Woodward and Kim Yin are fun shows, and Janice Kall is dressage, All Breed is Ann McCormick and Mikey Harchol. Write a job description. Water Stand Leak: Joe tried to fix but it was too wet and arced, so he will wait to fix it. Trainers Agreement: Proposed a $5 grounds use fee per student per lesson, a straight pass through. New Business Put an ad in Horse Tales for Chuckwagon workers. Tractor: $7, to take it back to condition we bought it except for hours on it. They are doing everything needed, and a lot we didn t know (seeping hydraulic fluid, replacing hoses, burned up clutch). This will set a maintenance date on calendar; Nancy now wants it maintained quarterly. There s a clock on the tractor (operational hours). Joe asked for at least 1 load of DG after the rains for the roads (maybe in March). The load in the back was used mostly to fill in ditches. Fun Shows: (Kasey) Working with the show managers, they are working very hard on the fun shows, reworking them, and they ll be really good. Dues on web page are confusing, looks like $300 per year. Should say one time before initiation fee. Adjourned, 9:11 p.m.
5 FEBRUARY GENERAL MEETING MINUTES Called to order by Nancy Kirchhofer, 7:07 PM. Minutes: Approval of minutes tabled due to delay of February Horse Tales. Treasurer s Report: (Gillian) Checking: $10, Money Market: $28, Total: $39, Expense pending for tractor: $7, Needed new clutch, did required maintenance, approved. Membership: New Social Member: Patrick Glass; Debra Doerfler, WS; Patrick Keith-Leach, NWS. Rodeo: No report. Chuckwagon: No manager yet. Sam is doing supplies. Need a manager. BMOM: Gillian is BMOM for February. Nothing is going on at PVRA because it is too wet. February 18 polo tournament is canceled. Drill: (Nancy) Nothing going on. COMMITTEE REPORTS Polo: (Parker) Fixed arena wall last weekend (it blew down), had good turnout to help. Participating in Day of the Horse this Saturday, 9-3 PM at Valley Center Vaqueros property. We play at 10 AM. On March 30, doing Polo preliminary tournament, 5 different teams. On June 17, 6-9 PM, there will be a Burgers, Brew, Live Music polo under the stars and Porsche event at PVRA. Everyone is invited, more to come, will need assistance, help. Hope for this to be a big community event. Nancy suggests contacting Chamber of Commerce and Rodeo to get involved, like a PVRA open house. Wood horse was brought down for Polo to train on; need to get it painted and put a cover on it. We don t want kids to get up on it and destroy it. It s a training device, will not make noise, not a hitting cage. Horse Shows: Dressage: (Janice) First show is March 12, premium will get posted tomorrow. Turnout is unpredictable due to weather. (Nancy) Tree is coming down Thursday, should still have some shade from the other tree. (Janice) Could we have a canopy? Should have room. All Breed Show: (Mikey Harchell) Did not have first show, really bummed. Checked grounds on Tuesday, really hard from rain and ruts. Did not have an answer on the tractor as of Thursday. Had a lot of preentries, three times the normal number, and trainers coming. Per Nancy, grounds are still not done. As a remedy, we are combining this show for a double-judged show in May or July, so we don t use up the October rain date. PVRA web site didn t get changed to reflect the cancelation; may need to have a backup person to change the web site. Gymkhana: (Dani) Got a message on Facebook page querying whether we are having gymkhanas this year because no new dates are up our web site. Need to get the dates up on the web site. Fun Shows: (Dani) Have redone the entire show: running in 3 arenas, judged hunter and equitation, rail classes, trail classes, gymkhana classes, daily point awards, raffles. Happening this weekend, starting at 9 AM. It will be structured better for warm-up arena, with no jumping in warm-up until jumping classes start. Nancy suggested looking at the grounds before the weekend. Rain date is July 1. Sign up sheet is here. OLD BUSINESS WS Bylaws Change: Ann read the text of the Bylaws change. Motion to approve by Emily Jarvis, seconded by Will Jarvis, passed by show of hands. Sycamore Tree: Coming down Thursday, it is hollowed out inside. Nina asked to save feet of trunk for a jump. They are grinding the stump down so it doesn t interfere with jumps/dragging. Arriola tree service is doing the work. Formed a committee to call for volunteers: Need 2 volunteers to call for show volunteers, get 48 hours each to do this. No one has volunteered yet. Janice asked what happened to big tractor: Big tractor brakes don t work. We don t use it enough, therefore not feasible to fix brakes. Why not sell it? Hydraulics and fuel line were fixed. Parker suggested starting it every few weeks. Bringing arenas back: Joe agreed to do this. Takes a lot of time to do it. The heavy rains made the arenas very hard. An arena is dragged just about every day. Chuckwagon manager: Would be credited 48 work hours. Option for a family member to choose a single membership: (Ann Vatet) Will board consider this? (Nancy) Marcia Kipp went over this with the board at the last meeting. There was mixed information that we got. Was it a money issue or a principle issue? We need to put all that information together. Discussion ensued. If we go the individual membership route, single membership dues will go up to cover the costs. Club needs the money to pay the expenses. Should we have a super-user fee for the heavy grounds users? Singles are already subsidized by the families. A survey was suggested. (Dani) A survey was attempted last year with little to no response. Parker suggested she write up a Bylaws change and present it. Parker suggested a lifetime membership ($5,000). Nancy asked for figures and words for the board to consider. At December meeting, a lot of opportunities for work hours were discussed. The work recruiter position has no volunteers yet. (Nancy) PVRA has to be careful not to get hurt by altering its structure. Ann T. asked Ann V. to support the Bylaws change proposal with a spreadsheet showing how this would work without hurting the club. Who will we get back if we make this change? Adjournment: at 8:34 PM.-- 5
