1 July 2013 Horse Tales The Monthly Newsletter of Poway Valley Riders Association Prez Sez The Role of Schooling Shows I have recently spent some time at local USEF rated shows where I met juniors and adult amateurs who were absolutely haunted by show nerves to the point where their performance suffered. When confronted with show nerves, research shows that fear brings out the fight/flight response, which unfortunately carries over to our equine partners. That s why most horses are not as well behaved at shows than they are at home. At bigger shows, the controlled chaos can overwhelm our horses with new sights and sounds, In addition, rules that are relaxed at schooling shows are held to the letter at rated shows so what seems like something small can lead to elimination. This is why schooling shows are so important. Generally they are smaller and more relaxed. If we get nervous, we can do multiple schooling shows often for far less than one rated show. Our horses can get used to the show activity at PVRA so when they get to the bigger shows, they have already learned to behave. PVRA s schooling shows meet the needs of all those who are new to showing, for experienced riders with green horses, and for those who just want to have fun without all the stress of a big show. Plus members who are in good standing can accrue points towards year end awards, all without the big ticket expense of rated shows. What could be better than that? Janice Kall, president Watch out for snakes! Stay s-s-s-safe! In This Issue No lunging is allowed in the dressage arena. This is to protect the new footing and the dressage arena fencing. Thank you for your cooperation! As the hot weather arrives, it is extra important to make sure your horse has enough fresh water to drink. Even if you have automatic waterers, check regularly to be sure they are functioning properly, and that no serious contaminants (like drowned ground squirrels or wayward manure deposits) are in the water. Also, be sure no one has inadvertently turned off the water supply. If you are at a boarding stable, and waterers are supplied by hoses, be sure that you do not accidentally turn off the spigot that supplies the waterer instead of your hose when you are done bathing your horse. 4 General Membership Meeting, June 4, 2013 Meeting called to order at 7:03 by Janice Minutes: Postpone approval of minutes to next month. Motion made by Allan Preckel to table approval and second made by Julie. Treasurers Report: (Gretchen) Checking $3,120.51; MM $10,600.87; CD $14, Total $28, Membership: Sam is at Espola Road meeting; table new members. Welcome to new PVRA member Kate Shuster! Special vet guest speaker: Dr. Corine Selders. Asked to talk about equine heat exhaustion and how to recognize and treat. Great information to know before the hot summer months. (Handout of notes.) If your horse is stressed from heat, stop work, remove tack, and don t use sheets or coolers. Get out of sun and into the shade. Cold water bath over the body is the best method. And then use sweat scraper to get water off coat. Offer water to horse! Give at least 1/2 to 1 gallon of water. A sip at a time is not enough. Hand walking to cool out and in between washing off helps cool down slowly. If horse doesn t improve, call vet. IV fluids could be needed. This is when heart rate and respiration does not go down. Ride and trailer during coolest part of the day! Member asked what to do if your horse is bitten by a rattlesnake, since more are being seen out on the trails. Corine shared that if the horse is bitten in the face it s important to keep an open airway even use a piece of garden hose. Best thing you can do as a first aid measure. Committee Reports Clinics: (Staci) Unfortunately no more committee, but club will keep the clinic dates that are on the calendar. Any PVRA member is welcome to run a clinic, but if no one contacts the board then the clinic date will be cancelled two weeks before the scheduled date. Would love to see some new people with creative horse clinic ideas run a future clinic. Staci can provide all the information you need. Rodeo: No report. Chuckwagon (Allan): doing very well, net $930 from past shows. This Saturday is the Gymkhana. Thanks to all the workers. BMOM: Murray Bankhead. Roping: (Ed) Starting to rope again and good Memorial Day weekend. Work Hours: Work hours are on the website. Number is a total of all work hours; if not correct, go back to the event you worked last and check with event contact. (Janice) The Wild Apricot website is not designed to manage work hours. As of this week the board made the decision to update the membership info in old PVRA website and enter work hours there. Sam, Charlotte, and Janice will work on entering all work hour data. Please be patient with us. Horse Shows Dressage: First show in CDS schooling series and second for PVRA series, 26 horses and 80 rides biggest show we ve had. Large arena in Ring 2. New Business Brush clearing: (Jay) There is a lot of brush on south side behind cross country course that needs to be cleaned. If we can get the ladies who have worked before from ladies penitentiary, labor would be free, but would need a dumpster to clear away the brush. Shelley motioned to approve, second made by Jasmine. Ring 2: (Krista) is the contact for Ring 2, in April board meeting presented a repair report for the whole arena and took pictures of repair or replacement. Board agreed to look into replacing baseboards. It s in the process of being voted on via with board. Next board meeting would there be an answer? One of pipe corral panels is pushed out and needs to be repaired. Jay suggested that the club tears down the boards for the safety issues. Krista mentioned the sharp edge boards were pulled off earlier in the year, but shouldn t go with pulling all the boards in case it takes awhile to repair. How long before a decision can be made? Janice made a proposal, take $1,000 from footing budget. And there s $500 approved. Membership can over-rule the board. Membership asked if the board has the authority to approve it? The budget was approved so the board can approve budgeted expenses. Maggi motion that general membership approves the expense for the baseboard. Krista seconded motion. Membership approved. Motion carried. Will need a major work party and Krista will need to organize the work party. Adjournment: Motion to adjourn the meeting made by Shelley and second made by Jasmine. Meeting adjourned at 8:00 Ω Page 4 Horse Tales July 2013
