4 InhoudContents Spesie / Specie The impala Lichtenstein originally described the impala scientifically as Antilope melampus in 1812, based on a specimen from Khosis near Kuruman in the Northern Cape. However, it had been known since 1801 when Daniell sketched it for the Truter and Somerville expedition. The good news for the owners of firearms is that the Gauteng North High Court has determined that articles 24 and 28 of the Firearms Control Act are unconstitutional. The court has instructed Parliament to amend the Act within 18 months. Read more about this on p 8. In May this year, the live-game trade segment once again ventured into unknown territory with the announcement that the production auctions of various auction groups have been postponed owing to current market conditions. Price has never before been the determining factor in the postponement or cancellation of a specific game auction. It is also sad but true that at every step of the way the State (SAPS / CFR) could, and should have engaged with SA Hunters and all firearm related stakeholders to rectify the patent problems that exist with both the legislation and the implementation thereof which would have solved the problems much sooner and without litigation being necessary. Leeus as n spesie is in talle lande nie veilig nie. Van die bedreigings is habitatverlies, konflik tussen mens en dier en die uitwissing van hul prooibasis weens stropery vir oorlewingsdoeleindes. Die konsep van die volhoubare ondersteuning van bykans drie keer soveel leeus in private eienaarskap as dié wat in die natuur voorkom deur inkomste uit hulle te genereer, help baie om seker te maak hierdie diere nooit op die rand van uitwissing sal wees nie, selfs al stort leeubevolkings in minder stabiele lande ineen.
