4 InhoudContents Spesie / Species: Nile crocodile The Nile crocodile is the largest living, lizard-like reptile in Africa and is responsible for hundreds of human deaths every year by attacking prey in and some distance away from water. It is a member of the animal class Reptilia, which contains the Orders Squamata (snakes and lizards), Testudines (tortoises, terrapins and turtles), Rhynchocephalia (the two tuatara species of New Zealand) and Crocodylia (crocodiles, including alligators). These are ancient reptile groups that are distantly related, although the Crocodylia are more closely related to birds. This sounds unlikely but birds and reptiles both originated from an ancestral reptile. It consists of respect, camaraderie, humour and innocent appreciation, and nothing brings out those elements like the traditions of a great hunt big or small... Brian Lovett This month we once again bring you a medley of articles, product tests, columns and promotions from the game and hunting industry. We dedicate the main part of this issue to big-game hunting in the Big-game Corner section featuring on p The hunting of big game surely is one of the most exhilarating experiences. But big-game hunting does not necessarily mean hunting a lb elephant or a lb charging buffalo. Read the respective stories of Stefan Fouché, who hunted the elusive Limpopo bushbuck (p 59), and Laurence Jennings, who bagged a Sharpe s grysbok, one of the Tiny 10 (p 70). These two hunts were true big-game experiences posing some serious challenges! As a young boy, Oscar Haugen was intrigued by an article he read about a Purdey land of big-game hunting (p 50). developed and repeatedly tested over the past decade by a handful of truly passionate this discussion on p 92. Bewaar ons wild Hoewel daar tans wêreldwyd n baie sterk beweging is teen jag en die aanhou van wild, en Amerika nou die inbring van trofeë verbied, is dit juis dié diere wat deur die bedryf bewaar en geteel word. Vroeër jare het die boere besluit wild word besit deur die eienaar van die grond waarop hulle voorkom. Toe het die boere al hul wild begin skiet, want môre is die diere dalk nie meer op hul grond nie. Daarna het hulle besef die wild word heeltemal uitgeroei. Daar was feitlik niks oor nie. Die oomblik wat hulle besit van wild gewettig het, het die diere weer begin aanteel sodat daar vandag goeie hoeveelhede van alle soorte is. WILD & JAG doen wonderlike werk. Julle bewaar ons wild!
