Ek het begin kriewelrig raak en gewonder hoe die dam na ŉ vinnige reënbui lyk. Daar was net een manier om uit te vind en dit was om self te gaan kyk. Toe ons daar kom, het ek gesien dat die spruit afgekom het, maar die water was moddervuil. Nadat ek so ŉ rukkie gestaan en kyk het, het ek hier en daar baberaktiwiteit gesien. Ek het so ŉ bietjie in my viskas rondgekrap en op ŉ pers kunswurm op n klein loodkoppie afgekom. Ek het besluit om hom vir die babers te probeer gooi. Die sloepie was maar smal en die water was vlakkerig en vuil, maar die babers het kort-kort ŉ mondvol lug kom sluk. Skielik was ek vas. Dit ruk en pluk, en skielik het die vis by my verby geskiet en koers gekies oop water toe. Ek het vir ŉ vale vasgehou en selfs ŉ ent agterna gehardloop. Toe bedaar die gespook so effens en het ek kans gekry om die baber nader te sleep. Toe hy die water hier naby my breek, het ek gesien dat dit nie ŉ baber is nie, maar ŉ yslike swartbaars. Tot hier toe was ek vas oortuig dit is ŉ baber en ek het hom maar bietjie geboelie. Toe verander alles. Ek het die katrolrem vasdegraai en die vis baie versigtig nader gespeel. Uiteindelik was die vis binne bereik en het ek hom met die BogaGrip aan die onderkaak gegryp. Ek het hom versigtig opgetel en met ongeloof na die skaal gestaar. Die vis het presies 4 kg geweeg. Ek was op daardie oomblik alleen en het skielik gewonder hoe ek ŉ foto van my vis gaan neem. Toevallig, net op daardie oomblik, het ŉ bakkie al langs die sloep in my rigting gery. Ek het toe ŉ tou aan die BogaGrip vasgemaak en die vis in die water gesit. Ek het vervaard na die bakkie toe gehardloop, aan die persoon verduidelik dat ek ŉ groot vis gevang het en gevra of hy nie asseblief vir my ŉ paar foto s sou neem nie. So kon ek darem hierdie uitsonderlike vangs op kamera vaslê om dit met ander hengelaars te deel. Die storie eindig nie hier nie. Ons neem ŉ paar foto s en laat die vis weer vr y. Toe ons die foto s vergelyk met my foto s wat die vorige week geneem is, sien ons dat dit presies dieselfde swartbaars is. Die seerplekkie op die vis se linker sy is op albei se foto s sigbaar. 9 FISHING FOR SPECIFIC SPECIES Luke Jackson from Slangfontein Farm writes: One does not often go on holiday or a fishing trip where the weather is perfect or the conditions are just right for the entire duration of one's stay. Excellent fishing rarely happens throughout the whole trip. Having said that, I think it is safe to say that the chances of that happening are slim to none, and catching everything one wants to catch is just not going to happen! I have been on many fishing trips that have been an absolute washout where no one caught anything. I have been on just as many where the fish were coming out here and there. Then people wonder why I have not caught anything. The answer is simple! One needs to target a specific species according to the angling conditions. at specific times of the year and it has always paid off with good fishing. Last year, we went on a trip to the Transkei. I had not been fishing for a long time. Because it is a spot where one can catch just about anything, I found myself falling back into the old habit of trying too many things at all the wrong times, conditions and places, and it proved to be costly, as it always does. The last day we decided to see what the tides, conditions and water temperature were doing and then decided to target some kob accordingly. We were lucky enough to catch something. When planning a fishing trip, it is very important to decide what species one wants to target, after which one will be able to figure out what time of year one is looking at, as these two go hand in hand. One must also look at the tides and other factors to maximise quality conditions. Conditions are not always as one wishes them to be, but with good planning according to the prevailing conditions, one is able to fish for certain species with reasonable success. The water temperature is also very important in targeting a specific species, as certain species enjoy water with a temperature of o C, while others prefer water above 18 o C. The list goes on. This also varies the further one travels up or down the coast, so doing one's homework is of the utmost importance, especially when fishing a new area. So, remember to do your homework on the immediate conditions the next time you plan a trip. Target species accordingly and success is almost always guaranteed. I am most certainly not an accomplished fisherman and I certainly do not know everything, but I have learnt a few things over the years while angling with my dad. I can promise you that if you target a specific species, you will come home with a fish, even if the conditions are not as good as they could be. Because most people only get to go fishing at the coast once or twice a year, they find themselves trying every facet of fishing they can think of. They try shark fishing, rock-and-surf fishing, spinning or whatever they are into, and it never or very seldom works, because if the conditions are not right for what one is trying to catch, then one is not likely to catch it. When one is trying too many things, one is probably not doing it properly and one is most likely not doing it at the right time or even in the right conditions.
