EDITOR@THEBANKANGLER.COM VAN DIE OEWER / FROM THE BANK From a frost-covered bank with the steam rising off the surface - and from my coffee mug as well! - a very warm welcome to all readers to this, our mid-winter July issue! By the time you read this, our Protea Feeder team will have gone and come home again after participating in the World Feeder Championships in June. In our August issue I will bring readers an insider report on what our team experienced there in far off Serbia, seeing as how our newly appointed sub-editor, Neville Foord, was - once again, I must add - an experienced member of the team. What can be reported right now however is the incredible financial burden that the Protea anglers had to carry - we all know how the SA Rand is depreciating against world currencies such as the US Dollar and Euro, so their budgets that were carefully planned several months ago had to be drastically revised - upwards! Nevertheless the team must be congratulated for their dedication and loyalty to South African freshwater angling by sticking to their off-the-field game plan to proudly carry the RSA flag. How long individuals can continue carrying their own costs however remains an open question This issue once again highlights the incredible field sports such as fishing and hunting that we as South Africans too often just take for granted. I refer you all to our Vanderkloof adventure (see page 54) that put experienced, expert anglers into the field and challenged their outdoor capabilities on land as well as on the water. The MacNab Challenge sees outdoor sportsmen and women worldwide in pursuit of their own, individual MacNab, from the original Challenge that entailed salmon, grouse and stag deer in Scotland in the previous century to a modern version now offered in the Upper Karoo with Vanderkloof as its capital. Of course the Karoo cannot offer salmon, but in my opinion here in South Africa we have an even better game fish to challenge, namely our Largemouth Yellowfish, a sleek, fully-scaled, strong, handsome predator that can achieve heavy weights and is indigenous to the Vaal and Orange river systems. You can catch it only here in sunny South Africa! It is only now being discovered by foreign sports, although local anglers have been targeting them for some years but keeping it quiet for fear of an uncontrolled onslaught. What is not generally known is that the official South African record is a specimen of just over 22kg, while the All Tackle World record of the International Game Fish Association is close on 10kg. Tourism, and particularly ecotourism based on the conservation of our prolific terrestrial and aquatic wild life is continually touted by economists, politicians and many others as having the greatest potential for the establishment of sustainable job opportunities and economic growth. It is indeed arguably South Africa s most valuable industry for the future. Tourism however is often seen as an industry catering only for foreign visitors. How wrong! Internal tourism, namely people moving from one part of the country to another for vacation, business, whatever, is also of major benefit. For example Vanderkloof, the town, the dam that carries its name, the Orange River that fills it and drives the turbines in its wall that generate hydroelectricity and the wide open plains that surround it with all sorts of game, is one destination that can satisfy all the desires and needs of outdoor sportsmen and women. The Bank Angler, I am proud to say, speaks loudly and credibly in playing its part to fulfill this objective.
