With the exception of a few uncles and aunts and of course the parents of the couple, the happy crowd gathered around a huge potjie gently simmering over a hardekool What struck me was the general tone of the conversations. Several of the young men are farmers while the city guys hold responsible positions in bashing they were far more concerned with issues relating to their families, crops, livestock and businesses, and evidently were successfully doing their own thing in spite of the government s bungling. One topic concerned a new dam that is already producing carp of over ten kilograms, blue kurper of three kilograms and bass of four kilograms. Their biggest in it, and with every one of them, including most of the wives, evidently keen anglers, this issue reigned supreme. It was as if the woes that beset the country and occupy so many people s minds these days were nothing when compared to such a But two young nephews, as positive young men as one could wish for, knew recalled catches made just days before of bags of fat blue kurper and big carp. Our angling future, at this dam at least, looks to have a sustainable future.
