Ons het n kans gevat om by n plekkie by Hartbeespoortdam in te kom. Vroutjies moes maar vinnig pak en die haardroër los, want daar was nie krag of storte nie. Ons mans worry mos nie oor sulke goed nie! Ek was heel opgewonde om die spesiehengel-ding te probeer omdat dit my eerste keer sou wees. Ons het Saterdagmiddag daar aangekom, alles gereed gekry en vinnig die lyne in die water gesit. Ons het heelnag wakker gebly en in spanning gewag vir ietsie om te byt. Halfsewe die volgende oggend het ons die eerste aksie op die spesiestok gekry. Dit was soos musiek in my ore... Ek het gewone nylonlyn en n tigernut as aas gebruik om hierdie pragvis van 11,5 kg te vang. Ná n geveg van 20 minute is die vis geland en geweeg. So n mooi vis moes natuurlik weer teruggeplaas word. Wat n ondervinding om hierdie kaliber vis te vang! Ek moet noem dis my PB. Ek het baie geleer en sal graag hierdie soort hengel meer dikwels wil beoefen en sulke groot visse vang. Ek is beslis beslis ge-hook! Manie Nienaber, Rustenburg, skryf: Die naweek van 26 September 2015 het ek en n paar vriende en familie by Vosrite Fishing Adventures naby Parys gaan hengel. Ons het gesien hoe n dooie karp in die water dryf en hoe n likkewaan so stuk-stuk aan hom vreet. n Paar minute later was die karp weg. Ons het gedink hy het stroomaf gespoel maar was verkeerd. n Paar uur het verbygegaan en ons het toe opgelet dat n baber sukkel om te swem... Hy het meer na die oppervlak gekom en gespartel as wat hy geswem het. Dit is toe dat ons besef het daar is fout. Eers het Ian, een van my vriende, met die kano ingegaan en die baber probeer skep sodat ons kon sien wat makeer, maar die taak was te moeilik vir een man. Hy het teruggekeer na die oewer en my kom oplaai, waarna ons maklik n uur lank gesukkel het om die baber veilig in die skepnet te kry. Ons het besluit om hom nie in die kano te sit nie maar liewer in die net saam te sleep na die oewer omdat ons twee reeds swaar was in die kano; ons het reeds n bietjie vasgesit en nou en dan water ingeneem. Uiteindelik was ons met die baber veilig op die oewer. Ons kom toe agter dat die baber erg stink en sien n groot knop op sy maag. Die meeste mense het gevlug weens die reuk en ander kon nie die oggend se ontbyt inhou nie... Ek en Ian het die reuk getrotseer, die baber se bek oopgemaak en n dooie karp daarin gesien. Net die karp se stert was in die baber se bek; die res van sy lyf het van die baber se keel tot in sy maag gelê. Ons het besef dat die baber beslis nie so sou oorleef nie. Ek het die dooie karp met n tang by die baber se bek probeer uittrek, waarna sy maag (met die groot knop) sommer dadelik platgeval het. n Mens kon as t ware die dankbaarheid in die baber se oë sien. Ons het hom vrygelaat en hy het sommer spoedig weggeswem. Dit was nou die ervaring van n leeftyd om so n vraatsige, 14 kg-baber se lewe te kon red. Hopelik sal hy volgende keer sy maag se grootte in ag neem! BEYOND BELIEF Hardus van der Merwe, Sasolburg, writes: I am one of the biggest fans of Tight Lines. This photo was taken on 2 September this year. My wife and I went to Nonyana for a camping trip. My PB was a 5,4 kg barbel that I managed to beat with a nice one of 9,6 kg, and an hour later again with one of 12,7 kg. I could not believe that it was possible, but I did it! Searching for trophy catches at Part 1 mission accomplished by Rudolph Venter Afew months ago, I received an email from Marc Towers.

Our target would mainly be a 5 kg+ largemouth yellowfish on artificial lures, and if time allowed it, we would also look for carp, catfish and smallmouth yellowfish on lure.

10 Searching for trophy catches at Part 1 mission accomplished by Rudolph Venter Afew months ago, I received an from Marc Towers. He contacted me all the way from Ghana and wanted to know if it was possible to fish Vanderkloof Dam. I offered to guide him on this dam for a few days of fishing. Our target would mainly be a 5 kg+ largemouth yellowfish on artificial lures, and if time allowed it, we would also look for carp, catfish and smallmouth yellowfish on lure. Marc Towers with a monster 9, 3 kg largemouth yellowfish caught while trolling the fish of a lifetime. Marc has fished all over the world and has been fortunate enough to land several monster fish, including famous species such as golden dorado, arapaima, alligator gar, goonch catfish, sturgeon and golden mahseer. If all went well we could add a trophy largemouth yellowfish and some other species to his tally. We arranged to pick Marc up at the Bram Fischer International Airport in Bloemfontein on our way to Vanderkloof. We stayed at Pride Rock Lodge and the staff arranged lunchboxes for us to enjoy while fishing as well as dinner when we returned after a long day on the water. We would have five full days and one halfday session to fish the dam and we did it from my dad s new Ruffnek boat. Boat, Caravan & Camping in Nigel made sure that the boat was ready for action and installed our new Lowrance HDS 7 and Elite 5 Chirp fishfinders, which proved to be detrimental to our results on this trip. The first day on the water was pleasant as we had virtually no wind and sunny, hot weather. We decided to troll a few spots that had produced fish in the past, but except for a few small fish it did not offer much.
