Despite the event almost being cancelled at the last minute due to rising water levels that saw the dam go from being less than 20% full in March to overflowing its banks a month later, the many barbel that were caught earned them the undisputed title of species of the day in both the bank and boat competitions. Other interesting reads include the rehabilitation of Lake St Lucia, turning it once again into a paradise for tourists and fishermen alike. They have grown up with fishing rods and enjoy all types of fishing. As they are youngsters who are rather keen on the sport, the St Lucia Ski-boat Club asked them to take part in the interclub competitions as a junior team. They thought it was a good idea and it did not take much to convince Dad. They arrived at Umkomaas for the 2017 interclub competition. They attended the competition briefing and went back to the cabin to double check and triple check all their tackle and rods. They adjusted their leaders as per the rules of the International Game Fish Association (IFGA) and got advice from fellow fisherman. The next morning, they got up at 04:00 and met their skipper, Doug Dustin, at the Umkomaas Ski-boat Club. The first day of angling was filled with action. The two boys landed three yellowtails with a weight of 6.8 to 8.1 kg, a yellowfin tuna of 9.2 kg and some smaller bonitos and a pickhandle barracuda. As the boys were new to the area, it was a privilege to have Doug on the boat. He gladly shared his experience with them. The second day was quieter, with an easterly wind setting in. It was clear that the action of the previous day was not to be repeated. They tried all types of tricks and then decided to go shallower to about 25 m and try for cuda. They managed to land some nice live bait early in the morning. The boys put out two rods for cuda and a third with a horse mackerel as drift bait on top, with only a fluorocarbon line and one single hook. It was very quiet and they did a slow troll. After about an hour, the excitement lit up as the TLD 25 sounded like a rocket taking off on the drift bait. Stefan was immediately at the rod. As per the tournament rules, no one is allowed to assist. There was unfortunately not a bucket on the boat, so it was an innings and a half for the youngster. They had their reservations about what it could be and thought it could be a shark. Stefan fought courageously for an hour with the 10 kg line and the fish eventually broke the water. They were pleasantly surprised to see that it was not a shark, but a beautiful prodigal son specimen. The fish weighed a whopping 29 kg, which was enough to qualify for a new South African record and a new African record. The previous record, which was set in 1995, tipped the scales at 16.5 kg. This was a great experience and the boys will be back to fish in these waters. We caught about 50 kg of carp between three of us in about five hours. Pearly beach of poacher s paradise? Die stropery vind plaas ten aanskoue van almal wat huise het met n seeuitsig en almal wat op die strand wandel of speel.
