Vlieghengel-ekspert Rohan Koegelenberg het by Boegoebergdam teen die Oranjerivier in die hartjie van die Kalahari die kleinbek-geles gaan aandurf en kan nie uitgepraat raak oor dié fantastiese hengelbestemming nie. Neville Barnard het sy vriend Ryan Mathysen na Kwaggashoekdam geneem om hom sy PB te help verbeter en hulle het behoorlik onder die groot karpe baljaar! Wat kompetisies betref, is ons baie trots op die Kunsaashengelvereniging van Suid-Afrika se Proteaspan wat tydens die 2016 Malawi/Suid-Afrika-toernooi op die Malawi-meer met die goue medalje weggestap het. Ons het 28 jaar by Cape Vidal gekamp en gehengel. Verlede jaar op 24 Augustus het ek n leervis gevang, my eerste grote vir die seisoen van sewe weke. n Indiër langs ons het gevra of hy die kop kon kry. Die filette is na die ouetehuis op Duiwelskloof en die ribbetjies -ruggraat is na ons kampbuurman om op die kole te braai. Toe ons die kop afsny, het daar n sender uitgekom met die boodskap: Reward if Returned met n ID en telefoonnommer. Niemand op die strand kon ons sê wat dit was nie. Later het Glen ons gehelp. Vreeslik opgewonde het ons die nommer geskakel. Dr Paul Cowley, hoofwetenskaplike van die Suid-Afrikaanse Instituut vir Akwatiese Biodiversiteit (SAIAB), het geantwoord en gevra ons moet asseblief die sender vir hom stuur vir hergebruik omdat dit baie duur is. Ek stuur toe al die inligting van die vis aan hom: 7,4 kg, Lengte: 84 cm, ID Toe hy die IDnr hoor, het hy dadelik gesê die vis is in Port Elizabeth gemerk. Toevallig was Janet Mann van Ushaka Marine en ORI op St Lucia en ons het toe die sender saam met haar gestuur. Dr Cowley het vir my al die vis se data gestuur en was baie dankbaar vir die sender. Die leervis is op 15 Feb 2015 by Swartkopsmeer, Port Elizabeth gemerk. Hy het heen en weer verby stasies (receivers) geswem en was 556 dae vry. Hulle het 50 leervisse gemerk, waarvan sommige al lank gemonitor was. Hierdie een was die laaste keer op 22 Feb 2016 by Mosselbaai gemonitor voor hy noorde toe is. Hy was nêrens by Gwe Gwe (Transkei) of Blood Reef (Durban) se stasies opgemerk nie. Die stasies kom oral in die see voor. Sodra n gemerkte vis verby n stasie swem, word sy ID-nr gemonitor en gestoor. Die stasies word elke ses maande gediens en die data verwerk. KwaZulu- Natal se data was nog nie als verwerk nie. Ek het n beloning van R200 gekry en kon darem weer lyn koop. Ek was baie trots op my gelukkie en waardeer die goeie werk wat die mense doen! Al die pad van Windhoek Herman Ackerman van Bloemfontein skryf: My seun Stephan het al die pad van Windhoek gekom om hierdie pragtige karp van 8,5 kg in die Renosterspruit net buite Bloemfontein te vang. Sy aas was n erdwurm met Perdebyboldip. Altyd n lyntjie byderhand Luzanne van der Walt van Pretoria skryf: n Ware visserman het altyd n lyntjie byderhand, was die verduideliking toe Ruan van der Walt n foto van n vissie wat hy tydens sy graad 7-veldskool gevang het, vir sy ma gewys het. Dié filosofie handhaaf hy skynbaar steeds 17 jaar later, soos blyk uit dié foto. Our four-hour trip became a four-hour fishing adventure after we caught three small tunas and hooked a sailfish with a Williamson Speed Pro CD160 Lure. The sailfish fought for two hours and 40 minutes and its weight was calculated at kg. Our skipper Marcus tagged the fish (as he does with all sailfish and marlin he catches) and we released it after making sure it was strong enough. Regardless of the economic situation and our busy lifestyles, we still spend our savings on the latest equipment and make the effort to travel long distances to happening venues. Daily, we make time to research new equipment; what is working where and which venues are producing the fish. And after all the motivation we get from that, we finally reach a point where we decide it is time to go fishing. A week in advance we start by shopping around for bait and terminal tackle although we know we have more than enough in our boxes. Planning a trip is the most exciting part. We start by sorting out equipment, planning venues, and times of arrival and departure. Finally, the weekend of the trip arrives! We are excited, thinking of that big fish we all Perfect timing! want to catch. The journey to the venue seems never-ending, but then we arrive at last. Now it is game time! With our tackle set up and lines in the water with our most trusted baits, we relax in good company, enjoying the break from the rat race. We are all waiting for that first bite... Suddenly, the first fish is on and regardless of size we are all cheering. Everyone is in a scramble to rebait and then we all start getting bites. After a beautiful day at the water, as the sun starts to set, it is unfortunately time to go back to the real world... However, the trip home is also good as we all reflect on our fishing excursion. Fishing is always good as it is our escape from our daily lives. The life of an angler is indeed a blessed one. On such days, all other things being equal, fishing is better. These days are listed monthly here. The effect of the moon on fish in rivers, lakes and dams has been taken into consideration when compiling the forecast of Best Fishing Days. Local weather conditions are, however, of vital importance in all cases. Sharp changes of temperature, excessive cold, storms and muddy water following heavy rains are all factors which tend to produce poor catches. However, given favourable weather, more fish are liable to be caught on the days forecast because these are the days when fish will be feeding more readily. Legal protection must be given to strategic water-source areas the 8% of land area that provides half the country s surface water. That is because these water factories mainly in the eastern half of the country feed the national rivers, lakes and dams, according to Amanda Mkhonza, an attorney for the Centre for Environmental Rights. But while key to water security, they receive little legal protection, which could limit the impacts of coal mining, forestry and land degradation. A Saturday Star report notes there are 22 water-source areas that span five provinces (including the Enkangala Drakensberg, Table Mountain, Upper Vaal and the Waterberg) that are crucial for resilience to drought and to mitigate the growing impacts of climate change. They are considered foremost among strategic natural resources, supplying 70% of the country s irrigation water, sustaining 51% of the country s population, and contributing to 64% of the national economic activity, said Dr David le Maitre of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). We have to be very sure we re doing the right things in managing our water-source areas because this will have enormous implications for water security, Le Maitre is quoted as saying in the report. Wide-ranging research has shown that only 13% of water-source areas are protected. Bird count at Hartbeespoort Dam drops Water bird numbers around the Hartbeespoort Dam have crashed, worrying ecologists, notes a report in The Citizen. Last week, five teams from the Co-ordinated Water Bird Count, one of the citizen science programmes of the University of Cape Town s Animal Demographics Unit, were in the field in North-West, covering the entire area from Xanadu in the east to Magalies Park in the west. They discovered that water bird numbers around the dam had crashed from more than during the 16 July 2016 winter count, to 3 462, which is the lowest since 2010 and the third worst count on the dam since counting started. This can be explained by the destruction of a large number of habitats by the big floating islands of water hyacinth that are multiplying at a rapid rate and covering large areas of the shore and banks. Furthermore, mud flats on water edges are non-existent, thus taking away roosting and feeding habitats for most migrant waders, duck and goose species. Some of the changes can also be attributed to the heightened degree of pollution entering the dam, especially the major inflow of raw sewage during October 2016 from the Jukskei River. The same question can be asked as to what the situation regarding fish species is. The traditional breeding areas have been invaded by property developments around Hartbeespoort Dam, invading the shallow water edges and reed beds along the dam. The abandoning of the Metsi A Me rehabilitation plan at Hartbeespoort Dam has contributed in a major way to the woes of birdlife and fish populations in the dam! Dit is n lang en pynlike proses voor die septiese seer uiteindelik die been laat afvrot of dit permanent vermink. Dit is skokkend om te sien hoeveel lyn net so gelos word met die hoop dat dit vanself sal verdwyn. Dit sal ongelukkig nie gebeur nie hengelaars moet self hul lyn verwyder! Meneer, jy wat nie met n multiplier kan gooi sonder om n overwind te gooi nie, skaf vir jou n koffiemeulkatrol aan; hopelik sal jy ook n vis kan vang sonder overwind en jouself die verleentheid spaar. Ek kan maar net dink wat hier gebeur het: verleentheid, want ek kan nie n multiplier-katrol gooi nie en my maats lag vir my; frustrasie, want nou moet ek weer sukkel om die overwind uit te haal. Sulke optrede getuig daarvan dat daar geen respek vir die omgewing en voëllewe is nie. Hengelaars, gooi asseblief jul gebruikte vislyn in n sak binne-in die voertuig en sorg dan dat dit behoorlik weggegooi word tuis of by n visskoonmaakplek.
