Die see is van deurslaggewende belang om lewe op aarde te onderhou en dit dra tot ons lewensbestaan en welsyn by. Dit reguleer ons klimaat en weer, genereer 50 persent van die suurstof wat ons inasem en absorbeer oortollige koolsuurgas uit die atmosfeer. Die see speel ook n noodsaaklike rol in die wêreldekonomie deur voedsel en n bron van inkomste aan miljoene mense te bied. Meer as een biljoen mense wêreldwyd is vir hul primêre proteïenbron van die see afhanklik. Die VSA se Departement van Buitelandse Sake het in Junie n konferensie getiteld Our Ocean aangebied. Die Minister van Buitelandse Sake, John Kerry, het van die wêreld se voorste denkers byeengebring om n weg te vind om die toekoms van ons planeet se oseane en die gemeenskappe en ekonomieë wat daardeur ondersteun word, te verseker. Leiers van meer as 80 lande het die dringendste kwessies waaronder seebesoedeling, klimaatverandering en onvolhoubare visserye, onder die loep geneem. Een van die belangrikste aankondigings is deur president Barack Obama gedoen, naamlik n nuwe inisiatief om onwettige vissery aan te spreek. Danksy n regering-gedrewe strategie sal federale agentskappe, tesame met die bedryf, NRO s en ander belanghebbendes, saamwerk om n raamwerk te skep wat sal verseker dat seekosprodukte van die aas tot op die bord nagespoor kan word. Dit is n belangrike stap deur die VSA om te verhoed dat vis wat onwettig gevang word, die Amerikaanse mark bereik en landwyd op die etenstafel en winkelrakke beland. Om doodeerlik te wees, moet n mens erken dat die bekamping van onwettige vissery en die talle gevolge wat daarmee gepaardgaan, geen geringe prestasie is nie. Hoewel dit verblydend is om te sien dat regerings, NRO s en die bedryf positiewe stappe doen om hierdie euwel hok te slaan, is dit ook duidelik dat selfs sterker aksie in al die sektore nodig is om hierdie wêreldwye uitdaging die hoof te bied. Daar is geen alternatief nie die beëindiging van onwettige vissery is noodsaaklik om n gesonde oseaan vir ons kinders en hulle kinders te verseker. The ocean is critical to maintaining life on earth, contributing to our livelihoods and our well-being. It regulates our climate and weather, it generates 50 per cent of the oxygen we breathe, and it absorbs excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The ocean also plays a vital role in the global economy by providing food and a source of income for millions of people. More than one billion people worldwide rely on the ocean for their primary source of protein. The US Department of State hosted a conference titled Our Ocean in June. Secretary of State, John Kerry, brought together some of the world s leading thinkers to chart a path for securing the future of our planet s oceans and the communities and economies they support. Leaders from more than 80 countries delved into the most pressing issues facing our oceans, including marine pollution, climate change and unsustainable fisheries. One of the biggest announcements was made by President Barack Obama, namely a new initiative to address illegal fishing. Through a governmentled strategy, federal agencies along with industry, NGOs and other key stakeholders will work together to build a framework that ensures seafood products can be traced from bait to plate. This is a critical step by the US to prevent illegally caught fish from reaching US markets and ending up on dinner tables and on store shelves across the country. To be honest, one must admit that tackling illegal fishing and the host of impacts associated with it, is no mean feat. While it is heartening to see that governments, NGOs and industry are taking positive steps to address this scourge, it is also clear that even more decisive action is needed across all sectors to tackle this global challenge. There is no option ending illegal fishing is crucial to ensure a healthy ocean for our children and their children. Werner van Vuren, Nelspruit, skryf: Ek en my vrou, Desiree, was n naweek weg na n klein stukkie oewer wat seker een van die beste oewers in ons land is, naamlik Chrissiesmeer. Ons het die Vrydagaand daar aangekom. Dit was lekker koud. Ons het in die chalet ingeboek en was rustig tot die volgende oggend. Voor 05:00 die Saterdagoggend was ek al af na die water toe. Ons kon nie vir beter hengeltoestande gevra het nie. Teen 05:30 was my lyne al in die water. Die byte het maar stadig begin, maar met Super Cast se Rooi Perdeby op die bom en my mielies gedip in Honey Glow het die visse een ná die ander uitgekom. Lyk my dis die wenresep! Ons het 36 visse gevang, almal bo 2,5 kg. Al ons vangste is weer veilig vrygelaat. WENBRIEF Teen 17:00 het ek my stokke en visgoed net daar gelos tot die volgende oggend en opgegaan chalet toe; dis hoe veilig dit daar is. Die chalet is nie eers 50 m van die water af nie. Mooi kort gras, n seesand-oewer en geen vashaakplek nie. Alles word so mooi in stand gehou. Dis enige oewerhengelaar se droom! Ek wil net dankie sê aan tannie Alida en oom Joseph wat hulle stukkie grond vir ons hengelaars beskikbaar stel. Daar is werklik nie meer sulke oewers in Suid-Afrika oor nie! 9 a teacher s experiment Xavier Lawrence, Paarl, writes: Early in June, Len Lawson and myself contemplated on whether or not the cold weather here in the Western Cape would affect the feeding patterns of smaller carp in such a way that the bigger carp could feed and obviously then take our lines. Both of us being educators, we had that weekend to ourselves and knew this was our chance. On many occasions we found that the warmer waters allowed the smaller carp to be more active and thus being hooked more often. Nevertheless, we packed the gear and set out on a cold winter s morning to our little destination of tranquillity just outside Durbanville. trots op ons dogter Elsa Jonck, Jan Kempdorp, skryf: Ons dogter Leentjie (43) het einde Maart 2014 saam met ons by Spitskopdam gaan kamp. Sy het haar grootste karp van 4 kg+ met mielies gevang en haar geheime dip wat ouboet Johan vir haar gewys het, opgesit. Sy was so opgewonde oor hierdie groot vis dat dit saamgeneem moes word huis toe. As we arrived the dam was as flat as a mirror. We could see some surface activity in the deeper areas of the dam and this just excited us and took our minds off the fact that we were losing feeling in our fingers and toes. We set up our equipment and just before 07:30 all lines were in and the waiting game began with a rusk and coffee. For the first hour it was very quiet, but by 08:30 the first line had a hit. I left my coffee and grabbed the rod to strike. After setting the hook I knew that this was a bigger fish than usual. Upon retrieval we noticed that the fish was in the 4-5 kg range and in immaculate condition. I stared at Len while he stood there with the fish in the landing net and we both just forced a grin, realising that we might just be onto something here. This just brightened our mood and the fish kept on coming. By 12 pm we had caught no fewer than 13 fish in the 4-6 kg range. The experiment clearly showed positive results. Yes, there were longer dead times between hits, but the fish that hit were of decent size. The smiles lasted long after the catches made that day! 10 PRESS RELEASE PETITION AGAINST THE PROPOSED FISHERIES PROJECT IN VANDERKLOOF DAM Largemouth yellowfish under threat! by Bernard Venter, Conservation Officer (Freshwater), SASACC According to media reports the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Northern Cape Province, intends to start a programme for the neng of fish in Vanderkloof Dam. The Rural Fisheries Programme, which operates under the Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science of Rhodes University, undertook a survey and apparently iniated stakeholder discussions. The South African Sport Anglers and Casting Confederation (SA- SACC) agrees that inland fisheries have the potential to address several broad policy objectives, including food security, poverty alleviation and economic empowerment. The development of fisheries in South African dams in principle could therefore not be opposed. However, if fisheries are to be developed, such development must be guided by principles of sustainable utilisation because unsustainable use could result in overfishing and compromise the social benefits that should be derived from a fishery. The use of research results to inform the development and management of a fishery in order to ensure sustainable utilisation of fish stocks over time, thereby promoting the economic and social well-being of the harvesting fisheries, should therefore be a top priority for any development. It is widely accepted that the proper management of a fishery requires an understanding of the biology, life history and distribution of the target species as well as an understanding of the people utilising the fisheries and their utilisation patterns. Prior to developing a fishery, however, a full assessment should be conducted before a final decision can be made on whether a new fishery would be socially, economically and biologically sustainable. Typically, such assessments should include the following: A comprehensive fishery survey to determine what species are in the dam and obtain initial estimates of current use of the dam. Resource survey to determine what the actual productivity of the dam is likely to be and what the population structure of harvestable fish is in the dam. Stock assessment to determine the best harvest strategy to ensure sustainable harvests. An assessment of how the fishery is likely to impact on non-target species, especially those of conservation concern. Once such biological management targets have been identified, social and economic assessments will be necessary to assess the impact of their implementation on the users of the fishery. This is of particular importance on dams such as Vanderkloof, where different users may have differing views on management (e.g. commercial gill netters and recreational fishers) and calculate trade-offs in resource utilisation will need to be incorporated into the management strategy. Economic feasibility research to determine if a fishery on the dam is likely to succeed and assess risks of failure. Market access research to determine where and how harvested fish could be marketed. Monitoring and surveillance plan to ensure that the rights of all fisheries sectors (subsistence, sport and commercial) are protected once a formal fishery is put into place. Vanderkloof Dam is one of the few safe sanctuaries where largemouth yellowfish still occur in reasonable numbers. Even if the dam is big enough to entertain a fisheries project, and the numbers of other fish species are sufficient to sustain such a project, the impact of netting on largemouth yellowfish will be disastrous because: It would not be possible to net only other species and not largemouth yellowfish. Largemouth yellowfish reach maturity only after at least seven years and have a very slow growth rate; it will be impossible to repopulate the species if it is taken out of the system. The largemouth yellowfish is a threatened species and protected in terms of NEMBA legislation. The economic value of largemouth yellowfish as a top angling species for the ecotourism industry at Vanderkloof Dam and for South Africa is probably much more than what the netting industry could ever provide. Taking all the abovementioned factors into consideration, it is clear that Vanderkloof Dam is not suitable to entertain a fishery.
