Vis is basies perfek vir enige seisoen! Vars, bevrore, geblik, gepiekel of as aas hoe jy hulle ook al beskou, sardiens (ook bekend as pilchards of pelsers) het al op een of ander stadium n rol in talle Suid-Afrikaners se lewe gespeel. Hoewel hierdie vissies klein is, verteenwoordig hulle byna n kwart van die wêreld se visvangs per gewig, wat hulle een van ons waardevolste vissoorte maak. Elke jaar gedurende die wintermaande (Junie/Julie) versprei die nuus aan die KwaZulu-Natalse kus en binne n paar uur sak begeesterde skares menslike roofdiere op die gebied toe om saam met roofvisse, mariene soogdiere en voëls aan die fees deel te neem. Almal deel in die oorvloed terwyl reuseskole sardientjies in n strook al langs die kus swem. Dit beteken die beroemde jaarlikse sardientjieloop het aangebreek! Die sardientjieloop se vordering word deeglik gemonitor deur sportvissers wat na die strande en rotse stroom vir n voortreflike hengelsessie want daar is volop elwe en dus ook groter roofvisse soos kabeljou en leervis. Spesifieke wind- en stroomtoestande kan die sardientjies tot baie na aan die strand dwing waar hulle maklik met mandjies of handnette gevang kan word. Alles is trouens veroorloof tydens die sardientjieloop. Dit is n sosiale okkasie waartydens groot skares die branders aandurf en selfs nog groter skares geamuseerde toeskouers die bedrywighede gadeslaan. Afgesien van hierdie skouspelagtige natuurlike verskynsel wat jaarliks op ons drumpel plaasvind, wat maak die winter nog spesiaal? Dalk daardie gevoel wanneer jy uit jou snoesige bed strompel en onder n warm stort gaan staan, of om ná n lang werkdag huis toe te kom met n pot stomende sop wat op die stoof prut. Contact: Willie Mulder Each year in the winter months (June/July) along the KwaZulu-Natal coast the word gets out and, within hours, crowds of frenzied human predators converge on the area to join sharks, game fish, marine mammals and birds in a feeding orgy. It is a time of plenty for all as large shoals of sardines move in a band up the coast it is time for the famous annual sardine run. The progress of the sardine run is closely monitored by anglers who flock to the beaches and rocks to participate in excellent game fishing as there are plenty of shad, and with that comes the bigger predators such as cob and garrick. Particular wind and current conditions may force the sardines very close to the beach, where they are easily caught using baskets or hand nets. In fact, when sardines are beaching anything goes. It is a social occasion that draws crowds into the surf and even larger crowds of awed and amused spectators. Apart from this spectacular natural phenomenon that takes place on our doorstep each year, what else makes winter great? Perhaps that feeling when you hop right from your toasty warm bed into a steaming hot shower, or coming home after a long workday with a bubbling pot of soup waiting for you on the stove. Dit was een van daardie dae wat niks eintlik wou byt nie en ons het maar rondgeskuif en rondgesoek. Uiteindelik het ons op pad terug so 800 m van die wal af duskant Franskraal geëindig. winning letter WENBRIEF Daar wou ook nie veel vis behalwe babers en ou tjolle byt nie. Die uiteinde was n pragtige 12 kg-witsteenbras, nogal op visaas. Die water was 8 m diep en 14,5 ᵒC. Hy het n kleinerige Daiwa Saltist-katrol gebruik. As n grap (en om dié uitsonderlike geleentheid te onthou) neem ek toe n mooi foto van die twee en maak vir hom n mock-up van n Stywe Lyne-voorblad, siende dat ons dit al twee lees. 9 Henco en sy haai Fanie Kruger, Swakopmund, skryf: Op Sondag 21 April 2013 kuier ek en my vrou by my dogter en skoonseun Henri Snyman. Henri, ʼn groot rots- en strandhengelaar, het vier jaar vir Namibië gehengel asook drie toetse teen die Springbokke. Ná n lekker middagete vra my kleinseun Henco (13) vir sy pa of hulle nie die Sondagnamiddag n bietjie kan gaan hengel nie. Dis skoolvakansie en net daar besluit pa Henri dis reg; hy gaan sy seuns Henco en Stefan (6) uitvat na Langstrand bekende galjoenhengelgebied tussen Walvisbaai en Swakopmund om lyn nat te maak. Varswaterliefhebber Werner Roux, Cullinan, skryf: Graag wil ek met die lesers deel hoe die gehalte van Zonderwater Korrektiewe Dienste se dam oor die laaste paar jaar verbeter het. As kinders het ons daarheen gery met fietse en visstok. My eerste karp en baber het ek by dié dam gevang. Vir jare kon ons niks meer by die dam vang nie, maar danksy catch and release vang jy nou tientalle vis in die oggend. Hier is n 4,5 kg-karpie wat ek by die dam geland het. By die hengel plek aangekom, is verneem dat die haaie byt en is die visstokke dadelik reggekry. Met die lyne in die water is daar toe gesels met die ander hengelaars wat ook besig was om haai te vang. Volgens die ander hengelaars was daar reeds agt haaie geland die swaarste een was 80 kg. Ons het nie lank gestaan nie toe maak Henco vas en sy katrol gaan aan die hardloop. En daar begin die groot geveg tussen Henco en sy haai! Met Pa se hulp, baie moed inpraat en natuurlik die ondersteuning van al die ander hengelaars en toeskouers, slaag Henco ná ongeveer 50 minute daarin om die haai naby genoeg in die branders te kry sodat Pa hom kan gaan gaffel. Soos die foto aandui, daar staan Henco toe met sy 140 kg-bronshaai op die strand, natuurlik onder groot toejuiging van al die omstanders. n Besonderse vangs Sue-Mari Oosthuizen skryf: Ek deel graag my ervaring van die vang van n makriel by Doorndraaidam op 31 Maart om ongeveer 18:00. Ons het uitgegaan om kurpers te vang en met die inkatrolslag was ons verbaas om n makriel aan die lyn te kry plus n klein kurper in sy bek met die hoek aan die kurpertjie se bek vas. Ons vermoed dat die kurpertjie die oorspronklike vangs was en dat die inkatrol die makriel se aandag getrek het en hy toe die kurpertjie gevreet het. 10 THE ART OF CRAIG BERTRAM SMITH Art that speaks to the soul... the picture and mesmerised by his ability to express with a brush what many fishermen could only dream of. His paintings showed an attitude to fishing that I connected with and I began following Craig s progress quite intently. My love of fishing and all it encompasses is a way of life, something that I am fortunate enough to experience on a daily basis. I enjoy the fish I catch, but I also respect them, preferring a trophy fish remaining wild rather than dead in a photo. It is that very same passion shared by Craig that he captures on canvass a unique underwater moment frozen in time. Craig Bertram Smith started creating art from a very young age and always had a passion for the underwater world and its creatures. Now renowned for his vivid artwork and unique ability to portray fish in their natural habitat, he strives to create living, moving details. Meticulously depicting every bubble and speckle, bringing to life the natural beauty of the underwater world, he captures the essence and attitude of each of his subjects. Craig predominantly uses acrylic paint on board or canvas to achieve the high level of detail in his paintings. His precise technique of building up layers of paint allows him to achieve the fine detail he aims for. In 2009 a painting entitled Reef Kings was featured in an advert and it captured my interest once again. I decided to meet up with Craig and see his paintings for myself. We immediately connected and I invited him to join me on a fishing trip at Hell s Gate, Mozambique. Craig, being a very keen angler, was inspired while fishby Bertus Jansen van Rensburg I am a fisherman, always have been. The fact that I m s ll married to my pa ent wife is a miracle even though my fly rod inexplicably found its way into our honeymoon luggage and I then suffered from severe fish fever during that me! Ten years later nothing has changed, except for the fact that catching fish has become less of an objective and rather a way of keeping score while enjoying the journey as a fisherman. It s about appreciating the experience, either on your own or in good company from the quiet reverence of watching a rainbow trout silently sipping a dry fly during an evening hatch to the adrenaline-inducing, knee-buckling experience of a 50 kg GT destroying a popper.
