A warm welcome to everyone to this, our second issue for 2017! Hoe s daai vir tweetaligheid? How s that for bilingualism? Politieke korrektheid is mos deesdae diè wagwoord! Because nowadays political correctness is thè buzzword! Maar weet julle wat? Ek, saam met al die visse in ons waters, en tienduisende ander mense ook, voel vere daarvoor. Wat na my mening van baie meer belang is, is die totale omvang van die algemene omgewing waarin hengel as ontspanning en sport beoefen word. En in ons georganiseerde geledere gaan dit oor baie meer as die insluiting van die Previously Disadvantaged Individuals (PDI) in bestuursliggame en verteenwoordigende spanne terloops, diè groep het nou n nog meer rasbehepte klassifikasie, naamlik People of Colour (POC). Nee, dit gaan veel eerder oor die natuurlike hulpbron wat hengel in al sy gedaantes moontlik maak. Sonder water is daar geen visse nie; en as daar wel water is, maar dit is in n ongesonde ekosisteem, oefen dit logies gesproke ook n negatiewe invloed op die wel en weë van die visse. En as die visse sukkel, oorbevolk en ondervoed, in besoedelde water met lae suurstofvlakke, die oppervlak heeltemal toe onder n dig laag waterhiasinte, is dit beslis nie voordelig vir gesonde en aangename ontspannings- en sporthengel nie. Ek vergelyk hengel met n voedselketting heel onder het jy die basiese organismes wat die hele voedselketting boontoe ondersteun; die onderstes word deur die organismes hoër op benut (okei, verorber!), en so gaan dit aan tot die boonste vlak waar die roofvisse die bo-toon vier. Dis te sê in die water. Op die oewer egter is die slimste, sterkste en aggressiefste roofdier, en, liewe hengelaars, dis ons! Om egter te keer dat die visbevolking totaal vernietig word, bedink hengelaars met hul meerdere breinkrag sekere bestuurspraktyke om uitroeing te voorkom, soos byvoorbeeld vang en vrylaat, asook volhoubare oeskwotas - in Engels gestel: don t catch your limit, limit your catch! Maar dit is in die water, nie op die oewer nie, waar ons hengelaars baie min, indien enigiets, kan doen om die habitat gesond te hou. Okei, daar is seker dinge wat gedoen kan word, maar spasie om dit alles te noem ontbreek. Wat wel redelik maklik gedoen kan word is om n totale aanslag te lanseer op die water hiasinte wat al hoe meer ons waters inneem. Elke dag suip hierdie indringer plant miljoene liters water uit ons riviere en damme kyk net hoe lyk die bekende sloep by Bloemhof in die foto langsaan wat Werner Lubbe in Desember geneem het. So lyk dit op talle ander waters dis onhengelbaar! Ek het voorheen berig oor die gebruik van biologiese beheer (sien Uitgawe 126 bl22) en gee weer die adres waarna n epos gestuur kan word om aansoek te doen vir die kewers wat die natuurlike vyand van hiasinte is. Die klub moet vyf weke voor die kompetisie skriftelik aansoek doen vir n permit aan die plaaslike Departement van Water en Sanitasie.Van 08:00 tot 16:00 het 84 hengelaars afkomstig vanaf Vanderkloof, Petrusville, De Aar, Phillipstown, Kimberley en Bloemfontein vir die kontant pryse van R gehengel, terwyl daar ook 51 gelukkige trekkings was met n waarde van R Die dag was geken deur hitte wat amper 40 grade gehaal het met baie min tot geen wind. Die oewer is vol klippe en gevolglik was die hitte nog erger op grondvlak. Die byt tempo was maar traag, behalwe vir die alomteenwoordige kleinbek-geelvisse wat die manne, dames en juniors goed besig gehou het. Die karpe was maar klein en skugter asook die babers wat nog meer skaam was. Laatmiddag het die moddervisse hul opwagting gemaak, maar was hulle ook verbasend klein in die algemeen. Die ouer hengelaars het natuurlik die volmaan hiervoor blameer! Die klub kan net hul opregte dank uitspreek teenoor die plaaslike gastehuise en besighede te Vanderkloof, De Aar en Bloemfontein en die inwoners vir hul bydraes, asook Heineken SA en S.A.B. Die hoofwenners: Moddervis - 1ste Eloise Louw, 1,34kg. Baber: 1ste Clayton Torr, 7,70kg. Karp: 1ste en 2de: Boy Jacobs, 4,24kg en 2,64kg.
