Wildbedryfgroete Spring brings rejuvenation With the change of season to spring, which symbolises rejuvenation, the size of our magazine has also changed to be in line with the international standard. However, rest assured that the content and quality of the articles, as well as the paper on which they are printed, will remain unchanged. The success of the recent online auction of rhino horn has confirmed the demand for this commodity. It has also proved that the rhino are the winners in this process, especially if one considers that more than of these animals have been poached since the implementation of the ban on international trade in rhino horn. On p 18 23, Stefan Fouché shares his experience of a hunt for, among others, a mountain reedbuck, an impala, a springbok, a bontebok and a sable along the Orange River in the Northern Cape. According to Jokl le Roux, hunting is a fine combination of knowledge and technique. Then I saw the attentive eyes of the fish, watching my gradual descent into their territory. Somewhere beyond my immediate reach, I noticed swirling sand as a sand shark swiftly sped away. For a moment I wanted to freeze but knew I had to persevere. As I passed the jutting edge of a rock, a school of fish quickly took cover, just to cautiously reappear and approach my diving mask to establish where the bubbles came from. Vroegoggend was ons uit die vere en in die motor met ons koffie en peuselhappies, reg vir die langpad. Ek was ietwat benoud oor die groot avontuur, nie seker wat om te verwag nie. Toe ons by ons bestemming aanland, was ek aangenaam verras. Die blyplek was luuks en hoewel die binnenshuise versiering met donker kleure en swaar meubels vir mans bedoel was, was alles skoon en blink. Ek het nooit geweet ons manne vertel nie altyd die waarheid oor hul verblyf nie hulle rough dit mos gewoonlik! Die pragtigste omgewing met koppies en koeltebome het my begroet. Daar was ook n goed ingerigte braaiplek waar ek lekker kos kon maak. Die rus en stilte was voorwaar n lafenis vir die siel. Teen skemer het n werker die vuur kom aansteek en ek het geweet die manne is op pad. My seuntjie het my aan die hand kom trek om na sy prys te gaan kyk n pragtige rooibokram! Daardie aand het die vreugdevure hoog gebrand! These ancient ancestors were among the first large mammals to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Africa some 35 million years ago, and several dwarf (now extinct) species developed on isolated islands in this sea. The earliest known true hippopotamus was the extinct Epirigenys lokonensis, which lived at Lokone Hills near the current Lake Turkana in the Rift Valley of northern Kenya some 28 million years ago. It was one of at least three known extinct species of the hippopotamus. The name Hippopotamus is based on the ancient Greek phrase hippos ho potamios. Hippos is Greek for horse and potamus is Greek for river, hence the name describes a horse of the river. In Egyptian mythology the hippopotamus depicts the deities for fertility and evil. Description The hippopotamus spends the greatest part of the day in or near water but mostly grazes on land at night when it will range far from water. Unlike most semi-aquatic mammals, the body is almost hairless, the skin is some 6 cm thick, the upper parts are purplish-grey to blue-black, and the under parts and skin around the eyes and ears are brownish-pink. Highly acidic skin pigments inhibit the growth of fungi and the skin secretes a natural, red-coloured sunscreen to protect the animal against the ultraviolet rays of the sun. However, the skin cracks when it is out of the water for a long time. A hippopotamus can gallop at up to 30 km/h although it mainly trots on land. The eyes, nostrils and ears are placed high on the roof of the skull to allow submersion. The huge jaws can hinge far enough to the back to allow the animal to open them at almost 180 degrees, and it can bite with a force 10 GAME & HUNT OCTOBER 2017
