2 Danger Will Robinson A dangerous condition was found at the member s trap machine. It was left cocked and loaded. This creates a hazardous scenario for the next person to open the trap house. Set the machine back to safe when finished shooting. RSO Class Schedule There are two RSO classes left in Classes are nine hours. And yes, the class starts at 7:30AM. Lunch is available at the clubhouse. Pre-Registration Dates RSO Class Dates August 30 at 7:00PM September 16 at 7:30AM October 25 at 7:00PM November 11 at 7:30AM All classes are held on Saturday. RSO Class Notes: 1. You must come to the club house on the preregistration night to sign up for the RSO class. 2. The class is limited to 16 people. 3. The class will not be held if less than ten people enroll. 4. At preregistration you will need: a. Identification. b. $35 CASH for course materials. Reminder of the Month The board would like to remind everyone that we are all responsible for looking after other shooters. A gentle reminder is sometimes called for when you observe an unsafe action. A friendly Hi, I see that you have done (something unsafe). I seem to recall that the rules tell you to do (something safe). Don t confront. If the situation isn t resolved call a board member. Their numbers are at the top of page one. Mandatory and Additional Hours Work hours are a means to reduce your membership dues. Check the club website and the newsletter for work opportunities. This is a partial list of upcoming opportunities for volunteer hours: 1. Thursday Night Trap, 2.Tuesday Summer League, 3. July 20 th targets to unload at 5:00, July 30 th Corn Shoot, 4. Skeet field work. As other opportunities come up they will be posted here and online. Monthly Shoot News The next monthly shoot will be held on August 5th. This is a snub nose/compact pistol shoot. Irons and scopes are okay. Contact Larry (Monthly Shoot chairman). Re-Table That The shooting benches on the rifle range have been repainted and re-varnished. Thanks go to Steve Hoffman for hauling the benches, disassembling, painting/varnishing, reassembling and hauling them back. They look great. June 26, 2017 Volume 26 Number 6, Page 2

3 Monthly Shoot The monthly shoot was held on July 8 th. New and old service rifles were brought to the range. Scott Elliot won the shoot. Young shooters and old farts had a great time. Larry manned the grill and several folks called the line. There were some great scores. Take a look at the pictures. Figure 1 - Shooters on the Line Figure 3 And Lots More Smiles Shooting service rifles, including old style, older style and new style, has its own appeal. 4 A rifle and pistol range paint, weed whack, survey and cleanup was held June people participated. The range work day accomplished a lot. Grass was cut by a bunch of weedwhackers. The pistol range was opened up. This brightened up the range. The preparation benches, racks and most other surfaces were painted. Figure 4 - Scott's the Steak Winner (With a Smile) Archery MASS is hoping that a Boy Scout project would help build some projects. This could include a fence around the archery area. See the MASS annual report below. Skeet Field Update The skeet fields are nearly ready to be used. Bill and Matt Ryan are moving things along. Steve Martin was seen at the field, along with another handsome worker, on June 24. Contact Bill or Matt if you d like to help out. Stream Monitoring James Becker discussed testing streams with the new test kits. The focus will be on Carroll Creek and local streams. Here s his IWLA Mt. Airy Save Our Streams volunteers have tested the following creeks in 2017: South Branch Linganore in 2 places, Carroll Creek in 2 places, Woodville Branch, Ballenger Creek in 4 places, and the Monocacy River. Tests were for Dissolved Oxygen, Nitrates, Nitrites, Phosphates, Chlorides, and PH. Some findings of interest: 1. In aspects such as Dissolved Oxygen and Phosphates, Carroll Creek was a little better AFTER going through the City of Frederick, although Chlorides were slightly higher. 2. Woodville creek had the lowest Dissolved Oxygen seen yet, 5 parts per million and 55% saturation, but at least 50 minnows swam in there! They seemed content. The Monocacy River in June had similar amounts of dissolved oxygen as found in nearby mountain streams. There were two new applicants this month: Jerome (Jerry) Oden and Dave Ritchie. 2. The treasurer s report was given. 3. The local chapter of the CAP has been shown around the property. Impact areas were noted. Insurance verification has been received. 4. The picnic scheduled for August has been cancelled. 5. The skeet field walkway is complete. Top soil and seeding are done. 5 2. The corn shoot is July 30 th. Volunteers are needed. Next Scheduled Executive Board and General Membership Meetings Executive Board Meeting: 7/31/2017-6:30PM Reminder: The executive board meetings are not open to the general membership without a prior request or board invite. General Membership Meeting: 7/31/2017-7:30PM Range Rules Note that these range rules are still in effect until further notice. The new range rules have NOT been implemented. 1) Do not lock the gate when using ranges, just close the gate. 2) Do not block the range road with your vehicle. 3) You MUST have your range badge on your person and displayed. 4) You must sign the range use log and you must use your full 6 digit badge membership number. 5) You must enter all guest names into the Range Use Log. Names should be printed and clearly readable. 6) You must pick up your brass, other trash and remove the targets from the backers. 7) Only paper targets no larger than 24"X 24" can be used except at yards. 8) Shot gun pattern use only on pattern board (to left of the clubhouse before the pine trees) 9) On the pistol range, NO SHOOTING CLOSER THAN 10 YARDS. 10) On the rifle range, NO SHOOTING IN FRONT OF THE BENCHES. 11) Willful destruction of the ranges will not be tolerated. Shoot only at targets on the backers. 12) Pistol Range: During a cease fire DO NOT TOUCH any firearm forward of the red line for any reason. Open actions, make sure that the firearm is unloaded, stand behind the red line and do not touch any firearms. 13) Rifle Range: The RED FLAG identifies a cease fire situation. During a cease fire DO NOT TOUCH any firearm forward of the red line for any reason. There are possible members setting targets that you may not see. 14) No alcohol will be consumed before or during shooting. 15) At the archery range, only shoot field points at the club target. DO NOT SHOOT ANY FIREARMS ON THE ARCHERY RANGE. 16) No rapid firing at any range. Rapid fire is faster than 1 shot every 4 seconds. 17) Member s Guests: It is your responsibility to monitor them the entire time he or she is on chapter property. You must supervise your guest while they are shooting. Members are not to be shooting while the guests are shooting. No more than three immediate family guest or no more than two non-immediate family member guests permitted at any time. Be Advised Violations of Range Rules numbered 1 thru 8 constitute a policy and procedure offense. The following corrective actions will be taken: First Offense you will be sent a written letter of reprimand Second Offense you will be required to submit your range badge to a chapter officer and will be required to meet with the Mt. Airy Chapter IWLA Executive Board before your Range Badge will be returned. Violations of Range Rules numbered 9 thru 17 constitute a policy, procedure, and Safety offense. The following corrective actions will be taken. All Safety Violations will result in the loss of your range use privileges. THERE WILL BE NO WARNINGS. Your Range Badge will be pulled. You will be required to meet with the Mt. Airy Chapter IWLA Executive Board. June 26, 2017 Volume 26 Number 6, Page 5
