In what ways has the nominee contributed to the advancement of sport? (You may write as much as needed in the space below). George s has never had a job that wasn t in the archery industry, He s worked as a product designer for Martin Archery and Copper John and was a successful touring archery pro. Many of the products he designed, including bows and releases are still in use today. While at Martin Archery, he founded ArcheryTalk in 2002 as a way for Martin Archery to give excellent customer service out in the public eye. He has made himself available to the general archery public for questions and answers across ArcheryTalk.com and other numerous social media outlets and regularly acts as archery s help desk As an archer he participated as the highest professional level for 15 years, he s appeared in the Vegas Shoot-off over a dozen times, he won a world indoor championship and national indoor championship, and other national level titles and podium finishes. He has used this experience to provide athlete insight to the NFAA Council and has been instrumental in helping shape archery competition and rules in an advisory role. George continually offers free Seminars at the ATA Show, The Vegas Shoot, The Lancaster Classic, and The NFAA National Indoor every year to help spread top level archery knowledge and grow the sport from the bottom up. Today, he owns the Archery Learning Center which is the one of the few shops in Georgia that specializes only in archery and the only shop in the state that focuses primarily on target archery. Through his vast base of archery experience, he has gained extensive knowledge of shooting form, equipment and mental preparation. He shares the knowledge broadly with the archery community by being incredibly active on social media and interacting with countless archers. He frequently writes articles online which are referenced by other coaches and archers. This year an article on setting up

stabilizers for optimal performance went viral and has been shared countless times by others. Additionally, he has a web series, Thing a Week, which provides quick tips on everything from hand place to shot execution. 5. How has the nominee contributed to the service of his/ her local community? (You may write as much as needed in the space below). George came back to his hometown to open his archery shop and school. He recognized that target archery as a whole was pretty flat in the southeast and immediately set himself to reaching out to the community and hosting archery events in his area to bring target archery to the large and growing audience of the Atlanta area. The timing was perfect with the release of several movies that heavily featured archery. George provided an outlet for this new archery interest and worked tirelessly with his crew at ALC to provide an infrastructure for growth of archery through hosted indoor events, places to shoot outdoors, and worked hard at creating a variety of archery outlets to maintain the new shooters that archery was gaining and eliminate drop-out from the sport. Long response (500 words or less) 6. Coaches, especially at the volunteer and developmental levels, have the unique opportunity to teach and inspire athletes. It is because of the influential qualities that are inherent in the role of a coach that it is important that the nominee embody the ideals set forth by their role of a coach. Referencing specific events and character attributes how has the nominee proven him/herself to be someone of distinguished coaching character? (You may write as much as needed in the space below). George, or GRIV as he is known in the archery community, is an amazing coach, mentor, and friend to many archers. He is not only a coach to over 30 archers locally, but also archers across the country and internationally. Each of his archers is equally important to him, from his World Indoor Team members to his beginning archers shooting their first tournament. One of George s unique strengths as a coach is his ability to communicate to each archer on their level. Each day George works with archers from the age of 10 to adult so he must adjust his communication style to fit each individual. He also has the patience to work until the archer fully understands and masters a skill. Two archers presented with moderate to severe cases of target panic this year. Because of his broad knowledge of the issue and great relationships with each of these archers, they were provided the tools needed to persevere and move rapidly to normal shot execution and total control over their archery again. Both archers are looking forward to the indoor season after nearly quitting archery. These archers have provided letters of support about their experience following this nomination form. George has put his own shooting career on hold to coach and mentor these archers. George uses his practical experience as a top level competitor to provide the tools and knowledge his archers need to grow to the highest levels of their divisions. This selfless attitude was most evident when two archers made the last World Indoor team. Prior to trials, George had promised each archer that he would attend the Championships to support them if any one made the team. Two juniors made the team. George immediately started fundraising to raise the money. The trips of each archer were fully funded before George accepted any of the fundraising to support his own trip. Additionally, George leads by example. Top Hornet team members spend their Saturday mornings

teaching beginner archers shooting their first arrows. George hopes to instill the desire for them to give back to archery early on in their shooting lives and he recognizes that teaching archery helps them learn archery as well on a deeper level. It s George s practical experience that is his greatest asset. It gives him a level of empathy for his archers that is very rare in our sport. Having stood on the line himself while the crowd silently holds their breath, waiting to see if he hits or misses, gives him a deeper insight into the archery experience and he easily translates that to his archers. He can prepare them for what to expect when they are in the heat of the moment. Often he can keep them in the right competitive mind and maintain their focus on what s important during the most pressure filled moments of competition. Time and time again is able to refocus archers who have lost their way in competition and easily guides them back into their peak performance. Please feel free to include any other additional information. Submitted by: Name: Rhonda (Miller) Shaner Date: 11/21/2014

Letters of Support from Archers and Parents Dear USA Archery; I would like to support the nomination of George Ryals IV as USA Archery Coach of the Year. Coach GRIV has been a constant positive force in my son's life. I believe that it's not just my son, but every young person who walks through the doors at Archery Learning Center benefits from working with George. George has given so much of his time and effort to anyone who wants to know about Archery as a sport or as a hobby. I have watched him teach and coach his young team to great levels of success and they have won local, state, regional, national and world championships. (This year in Nimes, France; George coached the youth compound team to a Gold medal.) But I have also watched George work with others who don't enjoy the podium glory. I have watched him help adjust the grips of the seniors who have arthritis, assist the wounded warriors in wheelchairs who need different arrows, encourage disabled and differently-abled people who thought their sporting life was over to take up archery as their new sport. (Often when they only came in to observe their kids or grandchildren) This has been our family's experience and George encouraged me to further my education and learn about this great sport of archery. He has brought out the best in our archery community and shows the honor of sportsmanship. Sincerely, Alice Patton-Dukes Doraville, Georgia Level 3- NTS USA Archery Coach / Judge (jc)-usa Archery (Parent of Anthony Dukes, Archery since 2012) I attended and hosted George for his seminar in Victoria, BC CANADA. I have been to innumerable coaching clinics over my 40 years including giving more than my share before and after my tenure as Olympic Coach and Coaching Chair for Canada. I was truly impressed with the depth of knowledge of all things archery that George has. He has an uncanny way of explaining things in a way that anyone can understand, whether you are a bowyer, an industry insider, and Olympian or anyone in between! His ability to talk on equal terms to Recurve and Compound archers alike is truly unique. Add to all this his genuine enjoyment of what he is doing is infectious, just being in the same room is unique and enjoyable. Al Wills, President Archery Canada

George Ryals has all the qualities that make him a great archery coach. His virtues, dedication and hard work shine through in everything he does. It's so more than just the bullseye. It's about those human qualities that are developed through the archery that George is teaching his students every day: goal setting, determination, focus, hard work, supporting each other, being a leader, a follower, a teacher... are just a few qualities that George is successfully teaching to his students. Directly from Roy: "He so giving to kids. He is a selfless individual who devotes all his time to archery and to help kids reach their goals. To George, it's about helping kids, not making money. He does all this because he loves it. He has a true passion for archery and helping others. I would not be where I am today without the help of George Ryals. He is a great mentor, a great person, and a great archery coach." Thank you, Kala Green Cumberland, Wisconsin (Parent of Roy Green, Archer since 2013) I'm sure all of my teammates agree with me when I say, George has always been more than just an archery coach to us, he is a mentor, friend, motivator, and inspiration. This past year, my archery began to suffer due to a sudden impact of target panic, and anyone in the archery world knows that target panic is not fun, at all. Although, at the many tournaments that I was ready to give up, because I knew I wasn't shooting my best, George was always right there encouraging me to simply "shoot my bow"; which I have to say is definitely the best advice to give a panicking archer on the shooting line. He is never one to give up on his archers who aim to make their shooting better, and he is always willing to work with them in order to help them reach their goals. For example, another thing that all my teammates know, is how involved I am at school, and like the great coach he is, George understands how important this aspect of my life is to me, and is always there for me when I come to him seeking advice on balancing my busy schedule with archery. George's love for archery and coaching, is not only evident on the shooting line or even in his presence at Archery Learning Center, it is most noticeable in all the time, dedication, and support he supplies to each member of the Hornet Team. I could not ask for a better coach, thank you for all that you have done George! Bethany Bogan Snellville, Georgia Archer since 2012

Aside from coaching, George is a wonderful human being, father and friend. His attitude and kindness are present in both on and off the archery field. His personality is magnetic and he is truly adored by the parents and the kids he coaches. In the midst of the personality struggles he may face, that is all too common to this sport, he has the impeccable ability to remain positive in any situation. He truly humbles himself before other people. It s not uncommon to see George giving advice to other archers that are not even on his team because he truly loves the sport. As a coach, George has always been successful at binding his team together. Always taking the high road at moral decency at the height of competition. He encourages the same for his team members and reinforcing camaraderie of the sport as well as individual competition. George has also been instrumental at encouraging regional events, many to his own expense. Why does he do this? In order to provide the opportunity not only for his team, but teams of the region as well as competitors from around the country to participate in events that bring the archery community together as exactly that. The community of competitive archery and the JOAD community. These are the values as parents that we have enjoyed since our son, Cameron, has been involved in competitive archery. Not only is George a wonderful coach and friend in that respect, he has been a continuous positive role model in every kid he encounters. Chris & Dondi Pyles Buford, Georgia (Parents of Cameron Pyles, Archer since 2011) This past season George and I have built a better relationship off of the course than on the line; especially with me putting archery on the back burner for a while whilst I figure out where my life is taking me. In the past few seasons that I've worked with George I haven't always been the most open student, I've been reserved and have been one to listen and take things in over asking questions and getting involved with everything. Going into this past WAF Vegas shoot I was in a bit of a rough spot with life outside of archery and George was very understanding that I was concerned with other aspects than just shooting my bow; even though I wasn't fully devoted to shooting he was still very supportive. Probably the most memorable moment in my relationship with George was after I made it through Friday still clean- the only one of the ALC group shooting in pro class to do so; he pulled me aside after the round was over for a picture and a hug... Its not much but it was spoke very loudly for how he felt about the moment. I was also included in the Junior Pro camp that Griv hosted this summer. Being included was very meaningful especially as at that point I had already put the bow away more or less for a while. The camp itself was very enjoyable and I took away a bunch from it, but I took more away from the time spent off the course talking with George about things going on in my life and how archery works into the long term plan and how it works with relationships. Its huge being able to talk freely with my coach about both archery stuff and happenings in life; they both feed off one another, archery, especially at a pro level, is a lifestyle and everything comes into play. Understanding financial situation and making accommodations for that... I cannot thank him enough. Jacob Hemstock Seward, Alaska

It is a thankful experience to see Coach George teaching my son and all of the kids that call Archery Learning Center their second home. His manner of communication to them is instructive in such a way that it elevates them to try harder and one can see that Coach GRIV cares about the success of all in a wonderful caring and humorous way. I have to say that his way of speaking is even an inspiration to me. Thanks George for inspiring my son and all of us to excellence! Mrs. Lorie Holtsinger Dacula, Georgia (Parent of Alan Holtsinger, Archer since 2010) Hello, I m getting in contact with you on the behalf of coach George Ryals as he is being nominated to coach of the year. I thought I would write you a list of my accomplishment from this years until now. So first an introduction, My name is Hampus Borgström, I m 17 years old and I m from Sweden. Shoot the compound bow. I met George first time 2011 at a seminar here in Sweden and second time in Right now he s coaching me from distance and helps me a lot with my mental game, training and technique by me sending him videos and pictures. His method of coaching is easy to understand but still the quality of it is perfect and the amount of experience he has is more than just impressive! Not only has he been a great coach he s also a great friend. I thank George for everything he has helped me with and he s the main reason why I am where I am today. This is what George has helped me accomplish this year so far: Made the National team for the third time in a row as a cadet. I am standing as a pending pick for the seniors team for outdoor season We got a mixed team second place at the 2014 outdoor European championships as a cadet. I finished 5th as an individual at the outdoor European Championships 2014 as a cadet. I finished 9th at the World indoor championships as a junior. We finished 5th at the World indoor championships as a team. Finished 5th at our outdoor nationals. Ranked first junior compound archer in Sweden indoors. Ranked first junior compound archer in Sweden outdoors. Several regional and county/state champion as a junior. And now indoor season is coming and it s looking really good so far. There is just so much to write but in simple words, George is an amazing coach and he s always there for when I need him. He s just a phone call or a text away. He has had a huge impact on my archery career and he still keeps teaching me loads. Best Regards Hampus Borgström Sweden

Griv is without a doubt the best coach to ever walk in his generation. To be completely honest, I've been blessed to call him my coach, but not only my coach, to be able call him my friend too! This man has taught me so much about archery and how to make it in the archery industry. Not only has he taught me a lot about archery, but he's also taught me a lot about things in life and showed me different types of ways to approach things or people. Griv is all around amazing man and coach. He's kept me in archery for the longest time, he'd drag me into the shop when I wanted to shoot and even when I didn't wanna shoot. He's helped me become the archer I am today. Dillon McGeorge Loganville, Georgia Archer since 2010 If there is any coach that is deserving to be coach of the year it would George Ryals. GRIV is a coach that truly desires to see every archer be successful in their journey to becoming the very best archer. He has poured countless hours into our son and ask for very little in return. He has made an overwhelming investment in the world of archery. He has gained an extra child at time at times. He has spent many a weekends carting Dillon to and from tournaments without one complaint. He not only invest in them as an archer but as person. He passes on his knowledge and experience of archery without hesitation. In all our years if participating in sports we have never know such a giving, caring and encouraging coach. We couldn't be more greatfull for GRIV and the investment he has made in our son Dillon McGeorge. GRIV continues to give to the world of archery because of his true love of the sport. Daphne McGeorge Loganville, Georgia (Parent of Dillon McGeorge, Archer since 2010) To whom it may concern at USA-archery Coach of the Year selection board: Please consider George Ryals IV of Snellville, Georgia as Coach of the Year. I know I am biased a little because he is my coach, but this gives me the firsthand experience to tell you how great he is. He has helped me with every aspect of my shooting. GRIV is patient and very knowledgeable on how to get me and everyone else on the team to do their best. He knows that different archers learn differently and he is able to work with everyone to motivate them to achieve their best results. He has even encouraged several of us on the team to learn to be Level 1-Instructors for USA archery. I hope you will decide that George Ryals will be a great Coach of the Year. Thank You, Anthony Dukes Doraville,GA Archer since 2012

We would like to say that we as parents are very thankful to have George as our son's coach. He has helped Jacob and is always there for all the kids and us parents in any concerns that we may have. He is a great role model and instructor and friend." Glenn and Kim Rodrigue Loganville, Georgia (Parents of Jacob Rodrigue) He has helped me grow with my archery and has been there for me whenever I needed him. He has also helped me grow as a person and I am very thankful to have George as my coach. Jacob Rodrigue Loganville, Georgia Archer since 2011 I have played a multitude of sports and by far George is the best coach that I have ever had. He is great to me along with my teammates! He motivates us when we are ready to quit, he coaches us and he is also a great friend to us. George has been my coach for about two and a half years and my passion for this sport is greater than any other and that is due to my coach. When I hit a major milestone, his motivation and belief in me as an archer makes me want to keep pushing harder. Also, his knowledge of archery is so deep and detailed that it has accelerated my performance and has made me a better archer in a relatively short period of time. But, like I said before, George is more than coach. He is a best friend. I can come into the range after having a bad day and he will sit down and talk to me about it until I feel better. He will help you get through rough times, drama and just about anything you d need assistance with. I remember I was having a rough couple of weeks and I felt super frustrated with archery and I felt like wasn t improving as much as I should ve been. One night after team practice, I was completely fed up with my frustrations and the only thing I could think to do was talk to George. So, I went over to him and asked if I could speak to him. A soon as i said it, he stopped all of his prior engagements and walked with me to his office. I told him what was wrong, he began to explain to me that every archer goes through the same situation and he would be right by my side to help me with anything I needed. After that night, I knew that I could rely on George to get me where I needed to be and help me excel above other archers. I would like to say thank you George for all that you have done for me and I couldn t ask for a better Coach. Carmen Colston Stone Mountain, Georgia Archer since 2012 George has made all the difference in Daniel's confidence level and his archery abilities. In 1 short year, Daniel has won a national championship and set national records with George's guidance. Jim O'Connor Hahira, Georgia (Parent of Daniel O'Connor)

Dear USA Archery, My name is Jonathan Clark. I m the Media/Staff Coordinator for Last Chance Archery, LLC. We make multiple items that are used all over the world for working on and tuning archery equipment. I have spent the last 8 years perfecting and increasing my personal archery career to the level I m at today. Spending months traveling to around 15 national tournaments a year. I have won multiple National, State and local championships. All while gaining multiple Pro Staff sponsorships that support me throughout all my archery endeavors I am a longtime friend and student of George Ryals IV of Archery Learning Center. He has been one of my best friends, coaches and mentors over the years I ve ever had. I can count on one hand the number of people on earth that have the knowledge he has about the great sport of archery. Over the past years almost every bit of my success is all because of him. He s been there for me whenever I ve needed him. On, and off the range. He s been such an inspiration to me and to all of my fellow archers all over the world. I nominate George as the 2014 USA Archery Coach of the year because there s not one better. Thank you for your time. Jonathan Clark Pendergrass, Georgia Last Chance Archery, LLC George Ryals IV has always been there for me from the first time he opened his archery range. He gave me a job at that this new range when I was 13 so that I could earn money to buy my own archery equipment and in the meantime, he let me borrow equipment. Fast forward four years; George helped me through the most difficult year of my archery career. I had developed target panic and he helped me through it. He never gave up and was always positive. George is more than a coach to me, he is a mentor and a friend. Not only does he give me great advice for my archery but also for my personal life. I have learned many life lessons from him and I can trust him with anything. Kevin Paproski Grayson, Georgia (Archer since 2010) George has been a very positive influence on my son Kevin. Kevin is one of the Original JOAD kids from back when ALC opened its doors. George has spent a lot of time with the JOAD kids both while in JOAD classes, and with additional training with no compensation in mind but promoting the Advancement of Archery and Personal Development of children into young adults. There is a core group of kids that have been part of ALC JOAD for a number of years, and many more that have moved thru George's JOAD program that learned to be good archers and learned good sportsmanship. There are many Great young archers that owe their knowledge of Archery to George. One of his best tools he uses with the kids is having fun. There is a lot of fun and laughter at ALC. Mike Paproski Grayson, Georgia
