These two types of firearms / ammunition are PROHIBITED on the pistol range and MUST be operated on the rifle range, no exceptions. Mr. Mulhall (CRSO BDGC) advises ALL RSO s to emphasize oversight and proper use of each appropriate range. Mr. Mulhall advises a copy of Gun Digest will be available in the RSO shack for research to determine proper assignment of a firearm to the correct range, rifle or pistol, to prevent / avoid damage to range facilities. Mr. Mulhall will place a 2 template in the RSO shack to help determine target certification for 200 yard range use. Reminder: A 3 shot group must be placed within a 2 circle to qualify the shooter and firearm to use the 200 yard range. The pattern MUST be designated by the shooter in regards to placement of the group. This is a placement exercise and NOT a pattern exercise. The qualifying group must be certified and signed by the RSO that witnesses the shooter attempt for the target to be valid. Chris Boesche Asked for Board Approval for a shoot to use the club for a shoot. Chris will donate his time to do it. If we do this, we can get 5 Cricket 22 rifles through the NSSF. 11 Chris handed out the form for members to look at. Dates were approved by the board for Chris to work with. Chris has other ideas to make shooting more interesting for shooters. This would allow people to shoot in a competitive environment and there would be awards for the winners. We would keep rules basic at first and grow from there. This would be a good activity to get kids involved in. The CMP competition is ready for August 26 th. We will only have to buy the targets once a year. We will use pasters to get as much life out of the targets as possible. Some has cost, some does not. Chamber flags can be reused. We need to stay on top of everything. Chris would like to hold events like this May, June, July and August of next year. There may be another type of match that he would like to try next year. Tom Hunt Robert Faliski shot at SST and won high over all 465 out of 500. Plan on working on lights for field 5. A bucket truck was provided by Jim Bradbury to get this done. Targeted to start work on August 24 th to be completed by August 26 th if necessary. Biathalon went great, no safety issues. Container swap out is complete. 12

Range Closures June & August PITA Multi-Plex Events. The following dates are for range closures due to the rental of the range. No members should be out on the range during these scheduled times unless approved by the board of trustees. The following dates have been scheduled: September 5, 6, 7, 13, 14 19, 20, 26, 27, 28 8am to 4pm each day *Note: Entire club is closed during police events Please check your newsletter and/or online carefully for range closures. Closures are listed on the monthly calendar and in the section titled Range Closures. It is best to check in both places for closures. Sometimes the phrase Range Closed is omitted on the calendar due to the limited space in the individual calendar date blocks. The club is always closed during Law Enforcement agency use. The club is always closed during the Women s Pistol classes. Note that the rifle/pistol ranges are closed for shooting during the Continental League and PITA shoots whether it is listed on the calendar or not. This is a courtesy to shooters paying entry fees and shooting for trophies. Please check the Range Closure section for all scheduled range closures. If you mistakenly remove the Range Closed sign at the gate, please replace it immediately. 15 For the first time our club has hosted the PITA Summer Multi-Plex events. This is a shoot that is held in conjunction with any other PITA club that also hosts the event. This year 24 different clubs participated. So if you shot at Black Diamond, you shot against shooters who shot at all these other clubs. A total of 205 in June and 171 in August. The event was scored by the Lewis Class format. Paying money to 4 scores in each event. The method of determining which scores paid money, after the winning score, is a little too lengthy to put here but the scores that paid money are as follows: Singles 50, 47, 45, 42 Handicap - 49, 44, 42, 39 Doubles 50, 44, 44, 36 Singles 50, 48, 46, 43 Handicap 50, 45, 42, 39 Doubles 49, 44, 41, 37 June Event August Event As you can see from the scores, you don t have to hit all of the targets to win. There were seven shooters that shot at Black Diamond in June and five of them won money. There were five shooters in August and four won money. Single event payouts for our shooters ranged from $13 to $36. Payouts for the event winners ranged from $31 to $173. Hope to see more Black Diamond shooters at the next event. They will be held on Wednesday. 16

When reading the calendar, if there is a NAME on the calendar, it means that there is an RSO for that time. Public shooting is Wednesday s and Saturday s. All other times are MEMBER s ONLY 17 18

End of Summer PITA Trap Shoot 19 August 3, 4 & 5 We always complain about the rain but this year the only thing to complain about was the heat. The weekend of the shoot was the hottest one of the year. It was in the 90 s both days with very little wind. But as usual, the hardy trap shooters turned out to brave the blistering conditions. (Sounds pretty bad doesn t it). The turnout was not huge but we threw over 21,000 targets. The 3 Doubles events held on Friday were a success with a total of 66 shooter events. Usually we have about 25. Black Diamond club members fared well with Robert Faliski taking high overall honors for the whole event. Robert also won the B class in events 2 & 3 (doubles) and the mid yardage class in event 7 (handicap). Another triple winner was Charles Stacy. He won the C class in events 1 & 3 (doubles) and the mid yardage class in event #5 (handicap). Other club members that took home awards were Marion Dukes, A class singles, event #4 & Veteran High Overall. Frank Neumayer, long yardage handicap, event # 7. Jim Bradbury C class High Overall. Cody Ballard Jr. High Over All. Awards for the event were again supplied by Cody Ballard. The custom pens that he made were very well received by the shooters that won them. Thanks again Cody for all the work.. There are a lot of people that need to be thanked for making this event a success. The kitchen crew, who picked the best time to serve cold cuts for lunch. The trap help who kept the traps loaded for the shooters. The scorers, some of which shot and then helped and some who scored all day with minimal relief. I also have to thank several Seattle Skeet & Trap members who scored and loaded traps all day. (Remember, we need to repay this favor when they are having their events.) Overall, the event was a success. The machines worked without any problems. The food was great. There were no problems and everyone seemed to have a good time. A reminder, the trap season is nearing its end. Time to get ready for Continental. Marion Dukes 14

Sunday, August 26 th marked the first Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Rimfire Sporter Match held at the Black Diamond Gun Club. The match was conducted at the newly renovated 200 yd range. A beautiful sunny morning greeted the 6 match shooters. For many this was the first time shooting in a competitive match. Mixed in with the rookies were a couple of seasoned competitors. A great time was had by all. Brent Olsen who has been shooting rifle matches for a number of years got the match started with a brief clinic reviewing the 3 firing positions, Prone, Sitting, and Standing. Olsen also offered some tips on how to quickly assume the position and acquire the target. Brent went on to shoot a 562 in the match which earned him a bronze medal. With the first match under the clubs belt I encourage all club members to clean up that 22 rifle and join the fun! The plan is host a monthly match beginning May Please contact Chris Boesche, cboesche@aol.com with any input about future matches or interest in being part of the CMP planning committee. The club is also looking at offering a CMP John C. Garand match next year. Watch the Bull Sheet for coming news. Special thanks to a few of Club members. Brent Olsen, for helping with target boards and overall coaching in regards to how to hold an event. Mike McCarthy provided the target numbers. Clint and Marv helped with Range Safety. Thanks to the Black Diamond Gun Club board for their support and guidance. Match scores are listed below. The relay consisted of 3 competitors firing Bolt/ Telescopic, 1 Lever/Telescopic, 3 Semi/ Telescopic. R.B. Olsen Semi/T x Bronze medal B. Ballard Lever/T 502-3x M. McCarthy Semi/T 493-6x A. 13 Claybrakn By: Frank Neumayer Keep it Clean! Claybrakn... with Frank Neumayer Many of my students are new to shotgun shooting, and lately several have asked me about what methods or frequency they should use for cleaning and maintaining their shotguns? I answer them by briefly going over some of the basic and routine tasks they ll need to adopt in order to keep their guns safe, dependable, and in good condition. As a result of this question, and on a number of occasions, I ll find student shotguns with little or no lube on any of the mating metal parts. Based on this experience, and before we start any session, I ll do a quick check to make certain that all student shotguns are clean, lubed, and functioning properly. This situation also made me realize that I needed to write all this down so my students would have something to reference before, and apply after their training session. As boys growing up on a small farm in rural Oregon, my brother and I were shooting rifles, pistols, and shotguns at an early age. Our dad taught us not only how to handle guns safely and to shoot well, but also the importance of keeping our guns clean and ready to go. I can still hear him say Take care of your gun and it will take care of you. My brother and I were taught that good gun maintenance is simply a part of responsible gun ownership and we made it a standard part of our shooting and hunting routine. I m sure there are many different thoughts and methods out there on how and when to clean your guns, but all I can do is convey to you what I was taught, and that has served me well for many years. I m going to focus my comments on shotguns, because as clay target shooters we re usually firing many more rounds per day or per week than with most average rifle and pistol shooters. Basically, there are two types of gun cleaning methods that I use. The first is what I 19 20

call Dry Cleaning, and the other (more involved method) I call Wet Cleaning. I rarely shoot less than 100 rounds each time I take my shotgun out to the range. Every time I m finished shooting I take a few minutes and dry clean my shotgun. First, by pulling a cleaning snake through the barrels, and then by wiping down all metal and wood surfaces using a lightly oiled cloth for the exposed metal parts, and a silicone cloth for the wood. This removes any dust, dirt, shot residue, hand and face oils, and especially fingerprints off the metal - which can cause corrosion. I then spot lube all the mating metal surfaces, and wear and hinge points. If the shotgun I m using has choke tubes, I remove them and thoroughly clean and wipe them down. I also make certain I completely clean the barrel threads before I lube and re-insert the clean choke tubes. The goal is to have my shotgun cleaned, lubed, and all ready to go for the next time I head to the range or the field. If you shoot a Semi-automatic shotgun they will take a little more cleaning effort. Be sure to remove the forearm and wipe down all the major components with a clean dry cloth. Then prior to assembly, wipe down all the metal components with a lightly oiled cloth leaving the entire assembly lightly lubed - but fairly dry. The thing to 21 remember is that you don t want to leave any of the action components in a wet condition. Your Semi-automatic works off the gases expended from the fired shells and a wet assembly will simply collect spent particles and soot more rapidly, and this residue or build-up can quickly jeopardize or stop the proper functioning of your shotgun s action. If possible, remove the trigger assembly and brush out any and all loose particles then wipe it down with a dry cloth. On reassembly, a light spray lube is all that s needed, and for the same reason mentioned above, and don t leave your trigger assembly or receiver components to wet or over-lubed. After about 500 plus rounds through my gun, and depending on the shooting conditions I ve exposed it to, I ll do a wet cleaning of my shotgun. For this effort, I disassemble the shotgun down to its major components. Relative to the specific make and model of the shotgun, I ll remove the forearm, barrel-set, bolt, slides, and/or trigger assembly, as well as remove the stock to expose the receiver. (Note: on your cleaning bench, keep your wood separate from your metal parts, that way you won t end up with a nice ding in your stock or forearm while 22

handling the metal receiver or barrel-set.) While cleaning these components take the opportunity to thoroughly inspect each for damage or wear. I clean each component separately in a pan with a light solvent (kerosene). Use a cleaning brush to remove any particles, then blow dry with compressed air, or simply wipe dry with a clean cloth. Prior to assembly, thoroughly apply a light spray lube to all components. Again, and especially with Semi-autos, don t leave an excessive amount of lube on the component surfaces that will collect shot residue or build-up. As far as cleaning products go, there are a number of excellent manufacturers out there that offer basic to advanced shotgun cleaning kits. You can easily find these kits and products on-line or at your local Sporting Goods outlet. The kits normally include everything you ll need to get started out correctly. Along with detailed instructions, every kit will include the necessary rods; patches; brushes; tips; treated cloths; wipes; tubes of grease; as well as small bottles of gun solvent and oil everything you ll need to keep you shotgun functioning properly and in great shape. Outers, Hoppe s, Rig, and STOS are just a few of the excellent cleaning products available. I would refrain from using items like automotive brake cleaners or other harsh solvents on your shotgun or firearm. I ve seen 23 beautiful wood and metal ruined by using some of these products, so I strongly recommend you play it safe and stay with the products that have been specifically developed for firearm maintenance. Think of your shotgun as a complex mechanical device (with many small moving parts) that you use in the performance of a precision task. With that mindset, it should be easy to adopt the right attitude and perspective for proper gun care, inspection, and maintenance. There are many different thoughts out there on how to properly clean your shotgun, and on what products will work the best? Without question, good gun maintenance will not only retain your guns function, but its beauty, and value for as long as you own it. Again, these are just my ideas and methods which have served me well for many years. Here s the point you want to be confident your gun will function properly for every shot you take! Plus, you want to know your gun is clean and ready to go the moment you decide to head out to the field or range. Take pride in what you own, and remember Take care of your gun and it will take care of you. If you d like more information visit my website at or if you have a specific question send me an at claybrakn@msn.com and I ll do my best to get it answered. See you at the club Frank 24
