Range Closures The following dates are for range closures due to the rental of the range. No members should be out on the range during these scheduled times unless approved by the board of trustees. The following dates have been scheduled: June 7, 8 8:30am 4pm June 13, 14, 28 8am 3pm *Note: Entire club is closed during police events Please check your newsletter and/or online carefully for range closures. Closures are listed on the monthly calendar and in the section titled Range Closures. It is best to check in both places for closures. Sometimes the phrase Range Closed is omitted on the calendar due to the limited space in the individual calendar date blocks. The club is always closed during Law Enforcement agency use. The club is always closed during the Women s Pistol classes. Note that the rifle/pistol ranges are closed for shooting during the Continental League and PITA shoots whether it is listed on the calendar or not. Pledge of Allegiance Meeting attendance roster and June duty roster circulated. Mr. Mulhall initiated the meeting by soliciting input regarding any range safety issues. Several dud unfired rounds of ammunition were found in the spent brass collection boxes. A reminder to all RSO s to emphasize to shooters that all unfired rounds are to be placed in the dud container for proper disposal. Several.223 shell casings were found on the pistol range. All rifle cartridges, except for.22 caliber ammunition are to be fired on the rifle range. This includes pistols that will accommodate rifle ammunition. Discharged ammunition is appearing on the range as backsplatter. Shooters must be aware of their backstop, and proper height placement of targets so ammunition impacts proper backstop and prevents ricochets back onto the range. Law enforcement use of the shotgun range for taser practice has resulted in several of the contact 4

prongs / hooks being overlooked during the cleanup procedure. The appropriate agencies will be contacted and briefed so this issue can be avoided in the future. Mr. Mulhall once again emphasized oversight of shooters using the seated position. Target placement and backstop alignment are critical. Baffle inspection revealed bullet impact damage. Increased RSO guidance was emphasized. The RSO s present were briefed on potential theft activity on the BDGC property. Vehicles parked in the lot are having their tires marked for later identification of that vehicle when off property. This would allow the vehicle to be entered and the firearms / equipment inside the vehicle to be removed. Be aware of individuals cruising the property to scope out easy targets. Emphasize to members and public to lock their vehicles. Mr. Tom Hunt briefed the attendees on the current state of club property, our relationship with the adjacent plats / owners / operators, future planning, tax status, insurance status and RSO liability. Proper logging of both public and member use of ranges is mandatory. Data is essential for Grant submissions and maintaining support information for our tax status with the State of Washington. RSO insurance was briefed and additional information will be made available at the General Membership meeting. Any questions, contact Mr. Bud Cross. Mr. Hunt reviewed the RSO relationship with those using the pistol/rifle ranges, their responsibilities and authority when acting in the RSO position. Profanity 5 and unacceptable behavior by members and public will NOT be tolerated. The RSO on duty has the final decision as to individual access / use of the pistol and rifle ranges. Should the situation escalate, secure the range. RSO decisions are final. Mr. Hunt updated the attendees regarding club security. Any questions, contact Mr. Hunt. Work party progress was briefed. The club is looking for a tree cutter for property management (ice storm damage is being mitigated.) Shotgun classes begin 5/19 and will be conducted monthly. Date to possibly moved to the 2 nd Sunday of each month. Contact a club officer or Kathy Lynch for additional information. 2 nd level class possible in future. Club policy regarding minimum qualification of instructors teaching the classes was discussed. The lead instructor for the Shotgun class is NRA certified. All instructors at the womens pistol class are NRA certified in addition to completing Insights basic defensive handgun class, for standardization. Mr. Hunt briefed the status of the BDGC Financial Committee. Mr. Marion Dukes, Mr. Phil Erickson, and Mr. Jim Forczek will occupy those positions. The BDGC PITA shoot is scheduled for June 2 nd and 3 rd. Volunteers were solicited to act as scorers, to refill trap houses, etc. BOTH rifle and pistol ranges will be CLOSED on those dates to both public and members. 6

A review of the club policy regarding suppressors was requested. At the present time, except for Law Enforcement Agencies, suppressor use is prohibited on BDGC property. A review of the 200 yard range and operating conditions was requested. Target qualification and sign off is required (100 yard range, 3 shots etc) and approved / RSO signed target is to be presented by shooter to allow use of lower range. Time of availability was discussed. Agreed that open time / access is difficult to determine. Process to be reviewed and updated. Hunter Education classes to be conducted on May 22, 24, 27 at 5pm. RSO s are needed for oversight. A question was forwarded regarding RSO training process and also CMP membership by the BDGC. CMP membership had lapsed and will be renewed. The RSO training process is stated on the application form. Mr. Hunt provided an abbreviated plan for future range expansion. Meeting adjourned at 7:30pm. Submitted, May 23, 2012 Brian H. 6 Members can purchase the Savage M1 and M2 when they have them. Ammo for the 308 or 306 can be purchased from them They sponsor John C. Gerand matches All we need to do is send in a completed Affiliation report and $ Chris offered to donate the $30.00 if we would complete the report. Clinton Shaw moved that we do the paperwork to become affiliated with CMP. Seconded by Bob Sadesk. Motion carried. Multiplex: This shoot runs like an Interclub shoot and would be scheduled at BDGC three days after PITA shoot and three days before the next shoot. It is for PITA members and we would need 5-15 people to shoot, with an expectation of shooters. Need two traps and scorers for each trap. Structured into a 50/50/50, double, single and handicap. This would not be a big money maker but would get exposure for our new PAT traps and bring people to the range. If Jim Bradbury would like to chair this event, Marion and Tom will help make it happen. Old Business: shotgun class is this Saturday, May 19 th. Considering scheduling the class for the second Sunday of the month in the future. Women s Pistol Class: Phil Erickson reports the existing classes are all set. Tree removal: Bob Sadesk is still looking for someone to remove the tree near the caretaker s home and parking area. The quote he has gotten was $2,000. Steve Joos has a neighbor that cuts trees, he will check the possibility of him cutting down the tree and getting a cost. Property discussion: There is no property adjacent to BDGC for sale. The property that will be for sale by Weyerhaeuser is to the North of us. Shotgun Class: Clinton Shaw reports the first 9 10

Claybrakn By: Frank Neumayer Back to Basics Claybrakn... with Frank Neumayer As an instructor, I ve had the distinct pleasure of working with students whose abilities range from that of being a complete novice - who had never handled a shotgun, to A-AA class experienced Trap and Skeet shooters. I always try to tailor my instruction around the experience level of the shooters, with specific focus on any problems or issues that they may be having. For the novice, I ll cover all the basics, starting with gun and range safety, etiquette, and safe gun handling, all the way up through the learning and application of the five key elements needed to successfully break each and every target presented. What s really interesting is that when an experienced shooter comes to me with a problem or issue they just can t seem too resolved, most every time the solution will present itself when we go back and work through the basics and fundamentals involved. It doesn t matter if we re focusing on Trap or Skeet, the solution lies in returning to the basics! So let s take a minute and review some of the basics and fundamentals involved in clay target shooting, and if you re having some problems, hopefully with a little self-analysis you ll be able to get yourself back onto a winning track. The first major factor for accurate and consistent clay target shooting success is proper gun fit. Check to make sure your stock is the right length, not to long not to short. Length of pull (LOP) for factory shotguns is about 14.5, but the key measurement is the distance between the base of your thumb that grips the stock and the tip of your nose, that distance should be about 1.5. Also, make sure that you re keeping the gun vertical and not canted. You also need to keep the gun snug into your shoulder pocket and your hand centered on the forearm, allowing for optimal gun swing and control

Check your eye dominance to make certain you re not having any cross-dominance issue going on. Your eye/rib/bead alignment is critical, so be sure that the pupil of your eye is centered and resting on the base of the rib and aligning directly with the beads. When you feel everything seems to fit and align properly, go to the pattern board and determine if any minor tweaks may be needed. Make sure your pattern is set properly for rising targets. I prefer a or disbursement but you must be confident that your pattern is going exactly where your eyes are looking. You shoot with your eyes and not with your gun! Check your set-up or foot position. Make sure that your feet are no wider than your shoulders and that you feel balanced and well anchored to the ground. Your weight should be slightly forward on your left foot (for right handed shooters) and your left foot should be slightly forward of your right. Make certain that you setup comfortably for the worst possible break point that you could face at each post or station. Recheck your gun hold and eye hold points. For Trap singles or handicap, keep your gun hold points within the dimensions of the trap house lid. All of your gun hold points should be about above the forward edge of the trap house lid, and in a position right to left that allows you to see the target as clearly as possible as soon as it appears. Your gun hold points should enable you to move to the target is the most direct and efficient manner possible. Your eyes should be looking just above the rip and focused out into the breaking zone. Remember, your eyes can come back to the target much faster than they can move out to catch it, and you always want to be breaking a rising target. Be sure to check your vision! You need to see the target well at all times if you hope to get consistent breaks and good scores. One of the biggest problems I find is shooters peeking, or raising their heads, to see the target. Remember, lifting your head off the gun, ever so slightly, moves your pattern, and allows for the target to slip away. Lighting is critical, so make sure you have the correct lenses for the lighting conditions presented. The right colored lenses will eliminate eye fatigue, sharpen the clarity of the target, as well as keeping your eyes relaxed and focused throughout a long day

From set-up to follow-through, you must stay in complete control throughout the entire target breaking process. Once your foot position is set properly and your gun hold and eye hold points are correctly established then and only then do you call for the target. Don t move anything until you see the target appear. It s imperative that you see the target first before you react. Once the target appears, focus your eyes on the leading edge; move smoothly through the target; apply the proper amount of lead; take the shot; stay in the gun; follow-through or chase the break. It sounds pretty simple, right? The fact is that with quality practice, focus, persistence, and determination it really can become that simple. It s a fundamental truth that when a shooter, regardless of their experience level, properly applies the basic principles and fundamentals required for every shot every time success will follow. I see it every day, with every student, and I can t stress enough the importance of making the commitment to stay focused, work hard, and practice regularly until the basics and fundamentals become an integral part of their every shot routine. The truth is, that breaking targets is a lot more fun than missing them! Here s my simple advice to all you shooters out there that may be struggling. Age and change is ever present, and we can t escape it. So, take the time to step back and analyze exactly what you re doing on every shot every time. Get a shooter friend to help out if need be, but always remind yourself of the proven basics and fundamentals involved, and make sure you apply them each and every time as you move from post to post. If you re still having some issues or problems, just give me a call, I d be glad to help you out. Just remember, whether you re a novice or a World Champion shooter, sticking to the basics and fundamentals will always make you a winner! If you d like more information visit my website at or if you have a specific question send me an at claybrakn@msn.com and I ll do my best to get it answered. See you at the club Frank 19 20

They are: 1. Good equipment. That includes trap machines and voice calls. The new trap machines functioned flawlessly. No one complained about the birds. As for the voice calls, this is the first shoot that I have been to that neither a microphone nor a control box had to be replaced. Kudus to Bob Sadesk for all the work he put in before the shoot on them. 2. Good help. Even though the initial response for volunteers to sign up to help was light, more than enough people showed up on the day of the event and all went very well. 3. Good food. The kitchen crew of Clinton Shaw, Marilyn Manyon and new comer Jim Duffy, did an excellent job providing a variety of food for club members and shooters. 4. Good weather. Well, here s where Mother Nature threw us a curveball. It rained all day Saturday. Everyone got wet several times. I suspect this contributed to the lower than normal turnout of shooters. Sunday was better, just cloudy, and we had more shooters than Saturday.
