While going over the pistol range project with Clinton and Steve Reinhart, a new member (to Tom) Brian Nixon adds that he is in the carpet business and could come in on the Sunday we are doing the Pistol/Rifle range project and do the carpet installation for the pistol bays! One day I was thinking out loud about how I wished there was a shotgun class at the club and maybe that would help with bringing in some much needed revenue for the club..cathy Lynch sends me an and says she would love to teach the class and just needs help with the outdoor shooting portion! It is this type of volunteering and people working to make shooting a growing sport at the club that makes being a Black Diamond member all the more fun! Speaking of volunteering, we have a couple of new committees started and off the ground this month with volunteers from the club that you will all recognize. The first and one of my favorites is the new TV Committee.yep you heard that right, flat screen TV is coming to BDGC thanks to Committee chairman Bud Cross and Co Chair Cody Ballard. The plan is to go down to the pistol range during summer vacation and lead/copper mine the pistol range! Not into lead mining, well you can still help by either placing a monetary donation in the TV fund can on the counter for Sharon to ring up in the cash register at the end of the day or go buy some lead and shoot it up at the pistol range!! Cody says.45 cal ammo is the preferred ammo of choice!! So make a deposit either way and let s get to the HDTVing! The other committee is a standing Grant Committee, with Merv Vincent, Brian Pennington and Bud Cross. The plan is to capitalize on some of the grant money available to the shooting

3 community and put together an annual effort to be sure and have a grant request submitted for each of the venues available to us each and every year. The committee is working to establish club priorities and to understand the grant rules and obligations to be sure the club can fulfill their end of the bargain should we win a grant. Merv Vincent in last year s effort submitted a grant request to the NRA to remodel the women s bathroom. Merv s effort brought in a check for a whopping $3,500 to help with the women s bathroom remodel and makes him the hands down women s favorite at the club! Way to go Merv and thanks for all your hard work as well as your support with the club s Hunter Education program. Well, this is also the month to think about renewing your annual membership dues, please try to get that in early so we can spread the work load for the club Treasurer Laura Ballard and the club Secretary Marilyn Manyon. We have seen quite a few new members to the club in the past few months and so if you see them wandering around looking a little lost, give them a moment of your time and introduce yourself, make a new friend and help someone enjoy what the club has to offer them in the way of shooting and just good ol hanging out at the club. I have gotten a lot of great feedback about how friendly and helpful the RSO s we have are and how much more they enjoy shooting at our club rather than one of the club s that seem to be overly restrictive and a little heavy handed. I believe our approach to just letting them shoot and helping to create a positive first experience for new shooters by helping them to shoot and enjoy the range in a safe manner is the right approach and is working well for us considering how many new shooters we are signing up at the range. Hats off and a big thank you to people like Louis Braun, Larry Gardner and Jeff Detwiler who are always there on the tough days like Saturday and Wednesday nights without fail. The RSO effort at Black Diamond is a great team effort and the club would like to thank all of you and of course Chief RSO John Mulhall for promoting a safe, but fun place to shoot. Thanks, Tom Black Diamond Gun Club RSO minutes 4/17/2012 Meeting called to order at 6 pm Mr. John Mulhall Chair Pledge of Allegiance Sign in sheet and Monthly Calendar sign-up sheet circulated Attendees Cathy Lynch Tom Ekberg Phil Erickson Larry Gardner Jeff Detwiler Mark McCollum Louis Lincoln Mike McCarthy Pat Manyon Sam Vanassa Henry Sherwood Clete Novinski Bob Sadesk Andy Newell Richard James Chris Boesche John Griffin John Mulhall Tom Hunt Bud Cross Seb Pierini Frank Mammano Clinton W. Target Stands: Bob Sadesk says we have enough wood for 50 yard target stands and rebar. Phil Erickson reports that target bases have been made for the Police and are painted WSP. Please do not use for BDGC. There is more wood to make target 9 bases for rifle and pistol range. The stands are being made with one handle but Phil said they could easily add another handle, there is enough wood. After discussion it was decided to add a second handle to stands already built. Component: Bob Ballard and Mark Downing have purchased components from the vendor show. A list of components available is printed in the newsletter when space is available. Let Bob know what you would like him to order. He can buy one-time purchase at a good cost. Land Research: Jim Whitnell is looking into the 5 acre parcels that Weyerhaeuser is planning on selling. He is considering that on field 1 and 2 no shot goes off the property, on fields 3 and 5 the shot goes off BDGC property. Women s Bathroom Renovation: The outside wall that was bumped out to allow for more room has been sealed and is now waterproof. Dan Schultz, Tom Hunt and Pat Manyon have been making progress. Now the sealant is dry the walls will be painted. The partition realignment, new toilets, and laying a new floor surface will be the next step. The restroom will be out of order for a short time during the improvements. RSO Meeting: John Mulhall reported on the RSO meeting that was held at 6:30 in the BDGC clubhouse. Easter Egg Hunt: A great success this year with 1,000 special prizes and at least 4,000 eggs for the children to hunt. Donations of food and money were collected by a representative of the Enumclaw Food Bank. The Easter bunny brought lots of smiles to 11 little faces. The hunt went off without a hitch. Mark Downing offered to submit pictures to On Target. Business Classification: 501 C3 vs. 501 C4. We are looking into the differences. BDGC Insurance: Pat Manyon is looking into the insurance coverage we have at the range. The objective is to make sure we have adequate coverage at a competitive rate. 11 Claybrakn By: Frank Neumayer Staying Focused: Claybrakn... with Frank Neumayer I was talking to a shooter the other day that s been struggling with a consistency problem. He s able to shoot some decent individual scores in both practice and competition, but he can t seem to put together good scores back-to-back or even hope to run 75 or 100 straight. He wanted to know if I had any ideas that could help him out. To me, when I hear a shooter talk about having problems with consistency, regardless of the game, the first thing that comes to mind is there s a lack of focus and concentration on every shot, every time. It s been said that clay target shooting is 90% mental and 10% equipment. This is probably the greatest truth you ll ever derive from all the top gun articles, books, and DVD s on the subject of clay target shooting. Because you re having some shooting success, let s concentrate on just the mental aspects of your game. Let s assume you have all the basics pretty well figured out as they relate to your set-up, gun, choke, load, and pattern. Remember, clay target shooting is a game of mastering everchanging variables, so mental attitude and mental discipline will play heavily on how well you ll succeed. With that in mind, I can only pass along to you what I ve been able to glean from much of the excellent material available that speaks directly to the mental game, and has worked well for me over the years. So, let s focus on what I believe are 19 worked well for me over the years. So, let s focus on what I believe are the major points to improving your mental approach to the game. First Point: You need to identify, control, and eliminate distractions. I ve never been to a shoot where there wasn t some type of distraction taking place. Most often it involves those in the gallery, kids, pets, vehicles, loudspeakers you name it. As a shooter, you ll need to mentally turn these distractions into tolerable noise that you can simply subdue or ignore, while still maintaining solid concentration and focus on breaking targets. Keep in mind that, expectation is a means toward resolution. However, there are times when some distractions just can t be ignored and you ll simply need to deal with them. If this is the case, you should always come from the position that the distraction is not intentional or deliberate. This way you ll have a much better chance of easily getting it stopped or eliminated. With this mind-set, and by asking politely, I ve never had a problem getting an annoyance stopped quickly. The key is being mentally prepared and knowing that some type of distraction will take place. This way you ll be much better prepared to properly deal with it, if and when it happens. Second Point: You need to be adaptable in making quick adjustments for the conditional variables presented. Before arriving at the shoot, have you mentally prepared yourself to adapt quickly and properly to all the conditions you may encounter? Here are the conditional variables I m talking about: Weather (wind, rain, lighting conditions, and temperature); Targets (type, style, color, and visibility); Fields (how well set, background, height of houses, voice calls or hand pulls, automatic machines or hand-set); People (full or short squads, who s scoring, pulling, refereeing, or loading houses). You need to think about how you can easily adapt, handle, or accept each of these variables so they won t impact your shooting success. In order to remain calm, relaxed, and focused on breaking targets and posting high scores, you ll need to train your mind to prepare solutions in advance for every possible variable that may be presented. The key is to eliminate surprises and the best way to do this is by being mentally prepared to adapt quickly, easily, and without stress to every possible situation. 20

12 Third Point: You need to be consistent and methodical in your approach to every shot, every time. When shooters are in the zone as we know it, they have all the distractions under control, they ve made the right adjustments for all the conditional variables present, and they always apply the same disciplined approach to every shot, every time. All three elements are important but from my experience, a disciplined approach to every target, every time is the most critical factor to winning events! Here s what I mean by a disciplined approach. With patience, timing, and rhythm, the shooter will go through the exact same sequence of events for every shot. For me it s a seamless 5-count process: 1) Focus my eyes as I start mounting the gun; 2) Complete the mount and lock into the gun; 3) Call for the target; 4) See the target, then move to it and break it; 5) See the break and follow-through. Also, every time as I start the process, I mentally say a brief mantra (see it; break it; stay in the gun). This little phrase helps channel all my attention, focus, and concentration to the five second task at hand. Forth Point: There are also a couple of other important factors you need to consider. The first is to dispel all negative thinking. Negative thoughts will only set you up for failure, so don t talk yourself out of a good score before you even walk out onto the field. The second is you need to stay focused but don t over-analyze and over-think everything on every shot. Trying to remember every single detail about everything all at once can be overwhelming, so just relax and trust in the established set-up and target breaking routine that you ve developed in practice. maintain the sharp mental focus and discipline needed during competition, I start my shoot routine at least the evening before and then continue with it throughout the length of the shoot. It s really not complicated; I just simply watch what I eat and drink, perform my few daily physical and mental exercises, stay hydrated, and get plenty of rest. So as you continue to work on improving your physical target breaking ability, be sure to practice every aspect of your mental game as well. Again, if clay target shooting is 90% mental and 10% equipment, then it s only logical that you should be applying the majority of your improvement efforts toward the mental aspects of your game. Remember always believe in yourself and trust in your ability and that positive thinking produces positive results! If you d like more information, visit my website at or if you have a specific question send me an at claybrakn@msn.com and I ll do my best to get it answered. See you at the club Frank In addition, there s certainly a lot of excellent advice and information available for shooters that speaks directly to the mental aspects of clay target shooting. Don t hesitate to select a quality book or DVD on the subject, especially if you want to dive deeper into the details of how to develop special or unique techniques to quiet your mind, reduce stress, physically and mentally relax, or to improve your mental clarity, focus, and concentration. The truth is, even if you could apply all the excellent information and techniques available, regardless of the game, practice and experience will always be the best teacher. In order for me to 21 22

13 The following is a list and or update of current projects and events going on at Black Diamond Gun Club. It would be great if some members stepped up and helped out with these. Please let any officer know if you would like to help out. Light Project Well, Tom Hunt and Bob Sadesk worked on field one lights.. it is out of service now..then we decided to adjust the lights on field five. it s out of service as well but the good news is that the club has five fields and we can still use three of them and we think we have gotten to the bottom of all this and solved the problem! Lori Kuhns has graciously volunteered to bail us out and help restore the lighting and upgrade the remaining fields as soon as the completed plan is presented to the board and approved! Whew! If you re interested in helping with this project, give Tom a holler or send an . We are hoping to repair all of the weathered venerable gear that has served us well for the last 20 odd years and then point them all in a direction to help our shooting scores!! Scoring Stand Refurbish Project Well folks it is time to upgrade and refurbish the scoring stands, and as such we are planning to remove the seats and slide them back a skosh and make them a little more comfortable. This project will require us to cut the current welds holding the stands together and then re weld them back onto the base. Bob Sadesk has made available to the club a stick welder with an onboard motor/generator to help make the task easy. If you re interested in becoming a part of this project, let anyone on the board know and we will work with you to git er done!! Trap Replacement Project 23 The club recently purchased 3 new pat traps. We have been selling the old traps to raise enough money to replace the other machines. So far we have sold 4 of the old machines and are ready to order 2 more new ones. We will have 3 machines for sale when the other 2 are installed. For the first time in club history we will have the same machines in all 5 trap houses. 24
