SPECIAL EVENT DESCRIPTIONS WEDNESDAY 21 FEBRUARY Town Square Laurel s Prize Hardsuit Tourney Time: 1-3pm Back by Popular demand! Open to all Laurels and apprentices who are authorized hardsuit combat fighters. This is a prize tourney, all combatants need to provide a prize for entry, preferably made by your (or your apprentices) own hands. Style of tourney will depend on number of entrants but historically it has been round robin. Early Bird Rapier Tournament Time: 3 5 p.m. So you came to Estrella War early. So you get to fight early. Join the other early arrivals and enjoy the camaraderie. The Early Bird Tournament is for those Rapier fighters who are on site and ready to fight early in the War. It will be a five weapons style prize tourney. Bring a prize valued at $10-$20 to enter. There will be as many fights as possible, with everyone fighting every round, and prizes will be given out based on the number of fights won. Heavy Rapier is the standard, but Cut & Thrust is encouraged for those authorized. Come fight someone, or several someones, you have never faced or rarely face. Outlands and Atenveldt allowable heavy rapier blade conventions will be observed. Parrying devices, armor, and weapons will be inspected before each tournament by Tournament Marshals and designees. Armor standards are those of your home kingdom. All authorized rapier fighters must provide proof of their authorization in Heavy Rapier / Cut & Thrust Rapier, or else have a Marshal from their Kingdom vouch for them. Rules of the field are standard Estrella War Rapier conventions. (Please review them, as they may be different than the Rules of your Kingdom.) Lists will open and armor inspections will begin approximately 30 minutes prior. Sponsored by the Company of the Sable Blade, marshal in charge is Master Koga Takashiro Kagehiro (TakaKensei) & THL Hamasaki Eiwa Miyako (EiwaKensai) Arts and Sciences/Grand Pavilion YAFA Display in A&S All WEEK The Society for Creative Anachronism has been developing the Youth and Family Achievement Program, also known as YAFA, for the past few years and it has now launched in several Kingdoms. It is a progression-based arts and activities program designed to teach medieval skills to youths across the SCA. With levels for age groups starting at five up through seventeen, the YAFA program provides a common SCA-wide platform that would allow families with children the ability to explore together areas of their own interest while working with designated mentors. A representative for the program will be on hand to answer questions! Cover Art by: Anna Bjugstadt All other images from the Public Domain 5

Kingdom of Artemesia Estrella Clue Party Time: 8pm Location: Artemisian Encampment You are cordially invited to join your fellow Crowns and Royals for a fun evening of Strength, Finesse, Wits and Mystery. The party is Wednesday night at Estrella War, starting at 8pm in the Artemisian Encampment. THURSDAY 22 FEBRUARY Town Square Outlands Prize Tournament Time: 10am - 6pm The list table for the Outlands Prize Tournament opens at 9am, bring your fighter authorization cards to the list table (Outlanders, you'll need your membership card as well). Or avoid the line and PRE REGISTER! (Link will be provided) The format, pending Their Majesties' approval, will be as usual, with a 1 hour pit fight, followed by an elimination tournament. ALL fighters are encouraged to enter, regardless of skill level, as we will take the top fighters in one tournament, and a secondary group of fighters in another, separate tournament. Assignment of fighters to each pit will be a mixture of all Kingdoms and ranks - we pride ourselves on giving you the opportunity to fight people from across the Known World. The fighting will open with bear pits. The first and second fighters will start off in a single fight. The loser will exit to give the name of the one who just beat them to the List Mistress for their field and goes to the end of the line. The next fighter in the line goes in to fight the winner. You know the drill. If there is a double kill, both fighters are considered to have a loss. In this case, 2 new fighters will enter the ring for the next fight. If a fighter in a cell achieves 15 wins, they are automatically in the final and are removed from the Bear Pit. Weapons are limited to 7.5 feet in length. After the 1-hour Bear Pit, the top winning fighters (including those that acquired 15 wins in that cell) will move on to a Best 2-of-3, double elimination tournament with all the pomp (double kills re fought). Additionally, a secondary tournament from fighters specifically selected from the bear pits will run concurrently. Draws will be semi-random and we will try to minimize the fighters having to fight someone from their own kingdom or one they have fought before. This will start with multiple fields and dwindle to one as the number of fighters lessons. The victor of each tournament will receive wonderful prizes gifted by Outlands artisans and her citizens! Open Music Jam with DragonSong Time: 3pm - 4pm Location: On Merchants Row at Wanderlust Import Trading Company A merry band of musicians from Atlantia, DragonSong, have made the long journey west to play music with you. We encourage you to grab your instruments and come and join them for a jam. 6

Barony OF Twin Moons (Atenveldt) 6pm Baronial Court /Deletha's Elevation Outlands Party 8pm Outlands Royal Encampment Barony of Sundragon Carnival Time: 8pm -?? Location: The Barony of Sundragon (Atenveldt) Laissez les Bons Temps Rouler! The Barony of Sundragon invites one and all to an anachronistic celebration of the ancient tradition of Carnival. Come and enjoy traditional Cajun fare while sharing in the festivities of the season modernly known as Mardi Gras! Carnival is a tradition that originated in the Middle Ages (arguably, there are some roots in pre-christian paganism). The word Carnival derives from the Latin carne levare, loosely translated as away with meat. It was (and still is) a pre-lenten celebration whereby the populace could get it all out of their system before having to abstain from temptation during Lent. Carnival celebrations peak on the day before Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), on shrove Tuesday, otherwise known as Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras (In French). Fat Tuesday refers to the ceremonial slaughtering and consumption of a fatted cow (boeuf gras in French) on this day. 8

The first Mardi Gras in the U.S. is generally believed to have been celebrated on March 3rd, 1699 at the Pointe du Mardi Gras, as it was named by explorer Jean Baptiste le Moyne Sieur de Bienville, about 60 miles south of modern New Orleans. Bienville also established "Fort Louis d la Louisiane" (now Mobile, Alabama) in 1702, and celebrated the first formal Mardi Gras one year later. Today, Carnival is celebrated all over the world, most prominently in Brazil and the Caribbean, as well as in Mobile and, famously, New Orleans. The festivities in the U.S. consist of parades, grand balls, parties and good food. Join Sundragon in this celebration by sampling gumbo, jambalaya, king cake and other delectable from the Deep South. From these dingy premises a party of adventurers will sally forth to face the forces of evil, setting their courage against the maniacal minions of a vile villain: The Dark Lord Do you have the courage and skill to carve your name in the sky, etching a legacy amongst the stars? Do you have the blackness of soul and illness of intent to halt a hero s ascendance? Join us for a tournament of good versus evil, of mighty heroes versus vicious monsters. The Rules: - Heroes will have classes that determine their weapon set, decided by a random card draw. - They will enter a dungeon encounter in which they will face four foes in a Monster's Gauntlet, one after another. This gauntlet shall be composed of randomly drawn Monsters. - Once they have completed their bout, Heroes shall be resurrected by the Dark Lord to join the ranks of the monsters. - A Round is completed once all entrants have fought their Monster's Gauntlet. - Rounds shall continue until every entrant has fought with every class, or until time is spent. Three shall be the number of victors, and the number of victors shall be three (3)! * Victor the First: The Hero with the most kills. * Victor the Second. Yours in Service Lovey Barony of Atenveldt Bardic Champion Best of the Branches Time: In Conjunction with Known world Bardic Are you the Bardic Champion of your local group? Then we challenge you to thrown down on Friday during and immediately preceding the Known World Bardic which begins at 7pm. The competition will be as follows: This year we are combining the Known World Bardic with the Best of Branches, to find Atenveldt s bardic champion of champions! That s right, we are doing something new and exciting! In order to compete for the title of Best of Atenveldt Bards, each Bardic champion has to compete in the Known World Bardic! The actual Best of Branches contest will be judged by a panel of members of the Order of the White Oak AFTER the Known World Bardic. To find the Bard of Bards, we are looking for you to bring pieces that embody what it means to be a true bard. First Round: bring a song from your homeland, whether it be an anthem of your Kingdom, Barony, Shire, or College, or a piece from your persona s region of the Known World, bring us something patriotic! This song will 11

be performed DURING the Known World bardic and will qualify bardic champions to compete in the Best of Branches round immediately following the Known World Bardic. Second round: The Bardic champions of Atenveldt who compete in the Known World Bardic automatically make it to round two! This round will occur IMMEDIATELY AFTER the Known World Bardic. These brave bards are asked to bring a piece that embodies our favorite time of year: WAR SEASON!!! Bring us your best battle hymn OR war story. Tie breaker round: The Bards of the Sun naturally enjoy being a team, and became the Bards of the Sun because of a tie, but this is the Best of Branches, THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!! Should the White Oaks require a Bardoff, bring us an original song or story that adds to the mythology of your Kingdom, Barony, Shire, or College. This round will be held at the discretion of the White Oaks, and may not happen, but you should be prepared for it anyway! Thus, having demonstrated their abilities in evoking emotion, educating the populace, and mastery over mythology, one of our competitors will be chosen by the White Oaks as the Best of the Atenveldt Branches, the Atenveldt Bardic champion of champions! Please spread the word to your local Bardic Champion, the Bards of the Sun want to see him/her come out and show us what they can do! Format is everyone fights everyone (as much as time allows). Each pairing is to 3 bouts, win or lose. Armor requirements will be to the standards of SCA Cut & Thrust Rapier, modified by each fighter s home Kingdom. The fighter with the most total bouts won will receive the adulation and respect of their fellow fighters and the marshals, and gain the satisfaction of knowing that they won the day. The Victor will be the Fighter to best represent the Swordsmanship or Style of an SCA Period Master, as chosen by their fellow Fighters and the Marshals Prize(s) are to be announced on the Tourney Field that day. Allowable Weapons: Maximum blade length for single handed weapons is 38 inches as measured forward of the quillons/guard. Two handed weapons will be judged on a case by case basis, but must be used as two handed and not just to increase length of reach. Rules of the field are standard Estrella War Rapier and Atenveldt Cut and Thrust conventions (thrusts, tip cuts, draw cuts, and percussive cuts). Outlands and Atenveldt allowable blade conventions will be observed. Parrying devices, armor, and weapons will be inspected before each tournament by Tournament Marshals and designees. Armor standards are those of your home kingdom. All authorized rapier fighters must provide proof of their authorization in Cut & Thrust Rapier, or else have a Marshal from their Kingdom vouch for them. Lists will open and armor inspections will begin approximately 30 minutes prior. Sponsored by His Royal Majesty King Marek the Jew, 96th Crown of Atenveldt marshal in charge is Master Koga Takashiro Kagehiro (Taka Kensei, King Marek s Cut & Thrust Champion) Arts & Sciences/Grand Pavilion Atenveldt Brewers Guild competition Time: 11 am - 3pm Location: A&S Pavilion Brewers from the Known World, take heed! The annual Atenveldt Brewers Guild competition at Estrella War is open to any brewer from any kingdom. Winning entries receive glory and prizes! All entries are consumed by judges exclusively, but there will still be fun to have and knowledge to gain. Bring your homemade mead, beer, 14

wine, ale, cordial, or liqueur, learn tips on brewing and creating from our knowledgeable experienced judges. Submit single or multiple entries, in one or more categories. Documentation may be simple (a list of ingredients) or extensive (list of ingredients, process, and history.) The competition is to be held Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018 at the A&S Collegium Ramada.
