Sparring Competition a. 20' x 20' c. 1 Center Referee b. 4 Corner Officials d. 2 Score Keepers HYUNG COMPETITION FORMAT: There will be 5 judges for each form contest. Each judge will issue points according to the scoring system outlined below. Two people will perform concurrently and each be issued their score. In case of a tie, the competitors will perform a different form. If a competitor makes a mistake during his/her performance, the head referee should: 1. Give the competitor one more chance to perform the Hyung. 2. Each judge will deduct 0.10 point from the score. 3. If a competitor makes another mistake, the head referee will assist the competitor to a successful finish. No additional deductions will be given. If there is a tie score, the judges should: 1. Ask the competitors to demonstrate a second Hyung. If a competitor is not prepared to perform a different form, he/she is automatically dropped to the next place. 2. If there still remains a tie, the judges will choose a winner by a show of hands. SCORING 1. Gup Members with a 7.5 average score. 2. Dan Members: with a 8.5 average score. Note: A score of a perfect 10 should not be given to competitors, in keeping with our philosophy. 2

Proper Hyung Sequence (while being sensitive to differences between schools) 2. Power Control 3. Tension and Relaxation 4. Speed and Rhythm Control 5. Direction of Movement 6. Spirit or Attitude 7. Proper Power of Technique 8. Understanding Hyung Technique 9. Distinctive Features of the Hyung 10. Perfect Finish 11. Precision of Movements 12. Intentness 3

4 PROCEDURES FOR FREE SPARRING COMPETITION: METHODS OF FREE SPARRING Gup Competitors will compete in point sparring. Dan Competitors will compete in continuous sparring. ATTIRE AND GROOMING DO BAHK Officials and contestants will wear traditional Tang Soo Do (Soo Bahk Do) Do Bahk, patches, and belt. No jewelry will be worn during Ja Yu Dae Ryun. PROTECTIVE GEAR Headgear, hand pads, mouth guards, and protective groin cups (for males) are mandatory. Cloth or foam gear is allowed. Use red headgear for the Red contestant and blue headgear for the Blue contestant, if available. Shin/instep pads and arm guards are allowed. GROOMING Fingernails and toenails will be cut to prevent cutting or scratching. Contestant Procedures 1. Upon hearing their names called, both contestants will stand up and step up to the edge of the ring. Without any further commands, both contestants will bow simultaneously at the ring's edge to show respect for the contest. First contestant comes to the head referee's left, which is opposite of the side used during Hyung competition. 2. The contestants face the referee and bow. 3. Then both contestants bow to the senior in the room. 4. The referee will then signal the contestants to bow to each other. 5. The referee will then step between both contestants while they wait for the sound signal to start. 6. Regulation time for all matches will be two minutes. 4

5 7. At the sound signal to end the match, the referee will officially stop the match. Both contestants will then face each other at attention and bow to each other. The contestants will then bow to the head referee. 8. The contestants will then stand facing the head table and wait for the winner to be declared by the referee. 9. After the decision has been declared, the contestants will shake hands and bow to each other, the head referee, and the senior in the room. 10. Both contestants will then step backwards until reaching the edge of the ring and then bow to the ring to show final respect for the contest. 11. After leaving the ring, the winner of the contest will go to the ring coordinator and report his/her name before returning to his/her seat. REFEREE PROCEDURES 1. After the contestants enter the ring, the referee will then direct them to face the head table and then initiate the bow. The referee will then step back and accept the bow from the contestants. 2. Referees will then attach the red ribbon on the back of the contestant to their left. 3. The referee will then signal the contestants to bow to each other. 4. The referee will then step between both contestants with his/her right foot and remain ready to receive the signal to start the competition. 5. When timers and judges are ready, the referee will step back, thereby directing the match to begin. 6. The match will continue for the regulation time limit, which is two minutes. 7. At the time signal to end the match, the referee will stop the match and direct both contestants to face each other. 8. The referee will then direct the contestants to bow to each other, to the referee, and then to the head table. 9. The referee will then grasp each contestant by the wrist and announce the winner, raising the winner's hand. 10. If there is no winner, the referee will release the wrists of the contestants and cross his/her wrists in the air to announce a draw. 11. After the decision signal is completed, the referee will direct both contestants to shake hands, unless the match is a draw. In that case, the referee will ready the contestants to spar again. When the contest is completed, the referee will then remove the red ribbon. POINT SPARRING Point Sparring will be the preferred method for all Gup competitors. 5

6 CONTEST GENERAL INFORMATION: 1. Each ring will have a time and score keeper. 2. The contestant who receives the highest score within the limited time will be the winner. 3. In the event of a tie, both contestants will remain in the ring and will compete in the next round. 4. The sudden win rule applies during the tie-breaking match. JUDGES AND REFEREES ALLOCATION OF POINTS: 1. Each match is officiated by one referee and four corner judges. 2. Each corner judge and the head referee has the individual authority to vote on points. 3. The referee has the authority to issue points based on the vote of all judges. 4. Points awarded are based on the majority of the officials' calls. 5. A minimum of two officials are needed to award a point (confirmation rule). 6. A "No Point" will be determined when the following occurs: 2 Judges call "Red Point," 1 Judge calls "White Point," 1 Judge calls "No see," 1 Judge calls "No Point" 1 Judge calls "Red Point," 4 Judges call "No See" 7. Special Reminder: Officials will call what was seen and not what was heard. Officials will make sure techniques are in target areas only. Warning calls are only to be announced by the center referee in all matches (except contact warning call). The center referee will organize and coordinate the "officiating team" in his/her ring. POINT CALLING PROCEDURES CORNER JUDGES 1. Red and blue flags will be used to call points. 2. The red flag will be held in the left hand, the blue flag will be held in the right hand. 3. There are eight basic possible calls using flags in Soo Bahk Do tournaments. One point Call: Flag of the appropriate color raised at a 90-degree angle. Two point call: Same action as one point call, except point two fingers with a verbal indication. Three point call: Same action as one point call, except raise three fingers with a verbal indication. No point call: Hold both flags in a cross pattern at the waist level. Couldn't see: Hold both flags in a cross pattern in front of face. Contact with point: Utilizing the appropriate flag to award a point, strike that same flag two times against the opposite one and raise it at a 90-degree angle. Contact with no point: Utilizing the appropriate flag for warning, strike that same flag two times against the opposite one and point the flag straight out away from the body parallel to the ground/floor. Contact with disqualification: Utilizing the appropriate flag for disqualification, strike that same flag two times against the opposite one and point it directly downward toward the ground/floor. 6

7 4. All corner judges will hold the flag position until the center referee has completed the call for the point evaluation. 5. Warning calls, other than contact calls, may only be made by the center referee. 6. Upon seeing (or hearing) a side judge make a call, the center referee will stop the match immediately and ask all judges to make their calls at one time by stating "Judges call." ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE OFFICIAL: 1. The referee will "head" the team of officials in a given ring. 2. Officials are responsible for the safety of all competitors in their ring. 3. Officials need to have control over spectators and competitors around all rings (crowd control). 4. It is the responsibility of the ring officials to be aware and accommodate accordingly if there are more than two divisions. 5. Officials should be aware of proper Moo Do discipline of the competitors (maintaining a healthy attitude). CENTER REFEREE: The center referee will not use a flag. Center referees will make their calls in the following manner: 1. One Point Call: Hand raised in the air in the direction of the contestant scoring the point. 2. Two Point Call: Same action as one point call, except raise two fingers with a verbal indication. 3. Three point call: Same action as one point call, except raise three fingers with a verbal indication. 4. No point call: Hold both arms in a cross pattern at the waist level. 5. Couldn't see: Place both hands in a cross pattern in front of eyes. 6. Contact with point call: Strike fist against open palm twice and raise the arm toward the appropriate contestant making contact with point. 7. Contact with no point call: Strike fist against open palm twice, and point the arm in the direction of the contestant making contact outward from the body, parallel with the ground/floor. 8. Contact with disqualification: Strike fist against open palm twice, and point the arm in the direction of the contestant making contact straight toward the floor. 9. When side judges see a point of contact, they should immediately make the call independent of what the other judges or referee does. 10. Upon seeing a side judge make a call, the center referee will stop the match immediately and ask all judges to make their calls at one time by stating "Judges call". 11. During a point call, both contestants and referee should remain in attention position. 12. The center referee will tally all calls and continue the match immediately. 13. When contestants are using safety head gear, if possible use red head gear for the red contestant and white head gear for the white contestant. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CHIEF REFEREE: Chief Referee is responsible for: 1. Establishing the guidelines for the safety of the competitors. 2. Organization of the event with the tournament directors. 7

8 3. Prior organization of Team Hyung and Sparring Competition. 4. Resolving any discrepancies among ring officials. ACCEPTABLE TARGET AREAS: 1. Face area. 2. Sides of the head (does not include the top of head, back of head, and spine). 3. The front and side part of the body above the belt. POINT SYSTEM: 1. Techniques that may be awarded 3 points: Any E Dan Cha Gi (flying kick) to the head and face area, with supporting foot above the opponent's waist. Three point jumping kicks with insufficient height of kicking or supporting legs will automatically become a two point technique. 2. Techniques that may be awarded 2 points: Dwi Cha Gi, Dwi Ahneso Pahkeso Cha Gi, Dwi Pahkeso Ahneso Cha Gi, Dwi Dollyo Cha Gi, Dwi Hu Ri Gi, Dwi Hu Ryo Cha Gi, and E Dan Cha Gi to face area with trailing leg below the waist area of opponent. Delivery of a clean leading attack using two point foot techniques with good form and balance. Immediately after a completed block with a side step, by either hand or foot, delivery of a clean counter attack with good form and balance, using either a hand or one point foot technique. 3. Techniques that may be awarded 1 point: Chung Kwon Kong Kyuk, Cap Kwon Kong Kyuk, Soo Do Kong Kyuk, Yuk Soo Do Kong Kyuk, Jang Cap Kwon Kong Kyuk, Kwon Do Kong Kyuk, Ahp Cha Nut Gi, Yup Podo Cha Gi, Dollyo Cha Gi, Ahneso Pahkuro Cha Gi, Pahkeso Ahnuro Cha Gi, Yup Hu Ri Gi, Pi Cha Gi any two point technique not demonstrated clean but worthy of a point. Delivery of a clean leading attack using either hand or one point foot techniques with good form and balance. Delivery of a clean leading attack with one point techniques, either hand or foot, after first grabbing opponent. (Grabbing or holding opponent is not allowed for more than one second.) Delivery of a sweep technique followed by a clean leading attack, using either hand or one point foot techniques, with good form and balance. Scoring technique must be completed before opponent's body touches the floor. (Allowable only at red belt level and Dan rank.) 4. Techniques or actions that will not earn a point: Techniques that are delivered farther than two inches away from target areas. Recommend that children's divisions extend scoring area greater than 2 inches at the discretion of head referee, based on their experience and level of control demonstrated by the children in that group. Any delivery of a technique where the attacker falls down, either during or after the technique, due to poor balance. A technique that is weak in speed and/or power. Attacks performed during, before, or after holding for more than one second. Blind techniques. Any technique performed after the center referee signals "stop." Techniques performed while opponents are clashing. Any offensive technique performed after an opponent has fallen to the ground. 8

9 Techniques performed when the contestants have more than one foot out of the ring boundaries (three foot rule). Three foot rule: To score a point, there cannot, between both contestants, be more than one foot out of the ring boundaries. If two feet of one opponent or one foot of each contestant are out of the ring, it renders any point-scoring technique invalid. (The plane of the ring edge extends vertically, so an E Dan Cha Gi may score even if the target person has one foot out of bounds). CONTACT: 1. Any intentional contact will result in immediate disqualification. 2. Any contact that causes bleeding, heavy swelling, or loss of wind will be grounds for disqualification. 3. Accidental contact that causes redness or light swelling will result in a warning. 4. An extremely well controlled technique that makes accidental contact but does not cause swelling, bleeding, or redness, will result in a warning and the awarding of the point to the contestant initiating the technique if the majority of judges making the call so indicate. 5. Two contacts of any kind in the same match will result in disqualification. 6. Any contact to the face or body that renders a contestant unconscious or unable to continue will result in automatic disqualification. The injured person will be declared the winner and will be allowed to continue to the next match with a new opponent. If the injured person is still unable to perform at the beginning of the next match, his/her new opponent will automatically be declared the winner by default. 7. Only two officials are necessary in order to call contact. 8. If two officials call contact, then it is automatically contact, but if a total of three judges call point for the same individual, then is automatically contact with a point, except in the case where both judges who have called contact also call disqualification. In that case, the contact call overrules the point call and the person is disqualified. WARNINGS: These types of warning calls may only be made by the center referee. He/She will direct the ring recorder to note such calls. 1. Techniques or behavior that will result in a warning: Techniques delivered to an illegal area, such as the groin, shin, kidneys, or spinal column. Using an open finger attack to the face area. Intentional traveling out of the ring to avoid the contest or waste time on the match. Intentional falling down or dropping to the floor. Intentional turning your back to avoid being hit in a legal target area. Holding your opponent for more that two seconds while attempting to administer a hand or foot attack. 2. Three warnings of any nature (not including contact warnings) will immediately result in a deduction of a point and an additional point deduction for each additional non-contact warning each time thereafter. 9

10 TECHNIQUES OR ACTIONS THAT WARRANT DISQUALIFICATION: 1. Showing disrespect toward judges, referees, or officials, which conflicts with Moo Duk Kwan discipline. 2. Intentionally and with malice attacking below the belt. 3. A second warning issued for contact. 4. Any other action that officials deem serious enough will result in disqualification. CONTINUOUS SPARRING Continuous Sparring will be the preferred format for all Dan-level divisions. INTRODUCTION The Five Moo Do Values History, Tradition, Philosophy, Discipline/Respect, and Technique serve as the foundation of Tang Soo Do (Soo Bahk Do) Moo Duk Kwan and separate it from other sports mentalities. Continuous sparring is based on these Five Moo Do Values. This unique approach to competitive sparring allows the membership to embrace the Five Moo Do Values and improve the quality of sparring, which will better reflect the founder's vision. While maintaining Moo Do discipline, Ja Yu Dae Ryun partners should use a wide array of historical techniques (History); display advanced Soo Bahk Do techniques (Tradition); embody the principles of Um and Yang with effective Ja Yu Dae Ryun (Philosophy); use defense with offense (Discipline/Respect); and demonstrate proper use of chain of command (Technique). MATCH ORGANIZATION One match consists of five 20-second rounds. The contestant who wins 3 or more rounds will be declared winner of the match (unless there is a disqualification). Contestants will complete five rounds (unless there is a disqualification), regardless of the score in rounds. RING OFFICIALS AND THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES CENTER REFEREE The Center Referee is a judge positioned within the ring. Their responsibilities include maintaining safety and Moo Do protocol (including spectator deportment); coordinating ring officials and contestants; arbitrating unforeseen circumstances; ensuring ring officials know the 10

11 Ja Yu Dae Ryun rules and which competitor is Red and which is Blue; making and counting calls. CORNER JUDGES Judges will be positioned one at each corner outside of the ring and their responsibilities include assisting the Center Referee, Timekeeper and Scorekeeper; and making calls. SCOREKEEPER The Scorekeeper will be positioned along either the east or west outside of the ring. Their responsibilities include: organizing and maintaining ring bracket charts; identifying competitors for each match and for on-deck status; tracking and tallying rounds, scoring, and warnings; and reporting results to the Center Referee and tournament organizers. TIMEKEEPER The Timekeeper will be positioned alongside the Scorekeeper. Their responsibilities include assisting the Scorekeeper and keeping time for each round. SCORING PROCEDURES FLAGS AND HANDS For all judges, the left hand represents the Red competitor and the right hand represents the Blue competitor. Corner Judges will augment this by holding a red flag in their left hand and a blue flag in their right hand. For safety reasons, the Center Referee does not use flags. WINNER OF ROUND CALLS At the end of each round, the Center Referee will ask for all judges to simultaneously make a Winner of Round call. Each judge will make a call by raising their left or right hand/flag vertically to designate the Red or Blue contestant. Ties will not be issued. ROUND WINNER The contestant with three or more Winner of Round calls will be the winner of that round. Each match will always include 5 rounds in keeping with the Founder s philosophy of Always finish[ing] what you start. SCORING CRITERIA 11

12 Contestants will be judged on how well they demonstrate the Five Moo Do Values with effective Ja Yu Dae Ryun. Each Moo Do Value will be weighted equally: HISTORY Demonstrating History includes proper usage of techniques. This includes signature techniques found in Soo Bahk Do, the Moo Yei Do Bo Tong Ji text, and traditional Tang Soo Do. Contestants should also maintain proper Moo Do ceremony throughout a match. TRADITION Demonstrating Tradition includes displaying properly executed advanced advanced techniques such as jumping and spinning. Proper use of Ki Hop is important. PHILOSOPHY Demonstrating Philosophy includes demonstrating proper transitions between offense and defense. Blocks should be defensive and yielding in nature. Offense should have real intent. Footwork is important, especially lateral movement combined with a counter attack. DISCIPLINE/RESPECT Demonstrating Discipline/Respect includes using proper ceremony throughout a match; maintaining Moo Do Shim Gung; showing respect to both seniors and juniors; using weapon to target accuracy, distance control, and effective timing; showing respect for partner s ability by defending with the intent to stay out of harm s way; avoiding clashes; displaying the ability to move off the line in defense; and executing effective/accepting blocks. TECHNIQUE Demonstrating Technique includes using proper chain of command and Shin Chook with weapon to target accuracy and distance control. It also includes using a variety of effective techniques in response to challenges presented by partner while targeting only acceptable areas (face; sides of the head - with foot techniques only; front and sides of the body above the belt; and, for red belts and above only: sweeps to the back of the ankle areas.) There should be no targeting of illegal areas (including: blind techniques; techniques to top of head, back of head, spine, and below the belt; using an open finger attack to the face area; any technique performed after a ring official signals for Ja Yu Dae Ryun to stop; and any technique performed after partner has fallen to the ground or has two feet out of the ring, or a technique meant to do harm). CONTACT WARNINGS 12

13 PROCEDURES At any time during a round any judge may call for a Contact Warning by signaling to stop the Ja Yu Dae Ryun and clock. When the Center Referee asks, each judge will call a Contact Warning by holding out their left or right hand/flag (to indicate which contestant) pointed level to the side for a Contact Warning, pointed down at a 45 degree angle for a Contact Warning With Disqualification, or at their side for no call. The Center Referee will assign a contestant a Contact Warning, or a Contact Warning With Disqualification if there are two confirming calls. The Center Referee will re-start the round for the time remaining, if there is no disqualification. CONTACT WARNING CRITERIA A Contact Warning may be called for excessive contact and/or accidental contact that may result in some redness or slight swelling. CONTACT WARNING WITH DISQUALIFICATION CRITERIA Disqualification may be called when there is egregious contact; contact that causes bleeding, heavy swelling, or knocking the wind out of the other contestant; contact to the face or body that renders a contestant unconscious or unable to continue; intentional contact; or acts that are meant to do harm. TECHNICAL WARNINGS PROCEDURES At any time during the match the Center Referee may call out and assign a Technical Warning or a Technical Warning With Disqualification. If necessary during a round, the Center Referee will signal to stop the Ja Yu Dae Ryun and clock. The Center Referee will assign a Technical Warning by holding out their left or right hand (to indicate which contestant) pointed level to the side for a Technical Warning, or pointed down at a 45-degree angle for a Technical Warning With Disqualification. The Center Referee will immediately explain to the ring the Technical Warning. TECHNICAL WARNING CRITERIA Technical Warnings may be called for techniques delivered to an illegal area; holding the other contestant for more than two seconds; blocking techniques that are excessively harsh; excessive clashing; tackling, tripping (except for sweeps); intentional traveling out of the ring; intentional falling down or dropping to the floor; intentional turning one s back to avoid being hit in a legal target area; language and actions not in keeping with Moo Do discipline. 13

14 TECHNICAL WARNING WITH DISQUALIFICATION Disqualification may be called when a contestant shows a blatant disregard for safety, disrespect toward officials, contestants, or spectators; and actions that conflict with Moo Do discipline and the Five Moo Do Values. DISQUALIFICATION A contestant will be disqualified if they receive any of the following: one Contact Warning With Disqualification; two Contact Warnings; one Technical Warning With Disqualification; three Technical Warnings and one Contact Warning; or four Technical Warnings. RING PROCEDURES ENTERING THE RING The first contestant called is the Red contestant, is the senior contestant by definition, and will stand to the west. Upon hearing their names called, both contestants will center themselves outside the north edge of the ring, simultaneously bow to the ring, proceed to the center of the ring, and bow to the Center Referee. STARTING CEREMONY The Center Referee will give the signals to face the Head Table and bow; then for the contestants to realign towards ring south and bow to the Center Referee. The Center Referee will attach the red ribbon on the back of the Red contestant, then give signals for the contestants to bow to each other, and to go to Jhoon Bee Jaseh. STARTING AND RESTARTING A ROUND To start or restart a round the Center Referee will signal the contestants to go to Dae Ryun Jaseh, and will step between them with their right foot forward and right hand extended. At the start of Round 1 or after an extended delay only, the Center Referee will ask if the judges, contestants, and Timekeeper are ready. When ready, the Center Referee will start Ja Yu Dae Ryun by simultaneously stepping back, pulling their right hand back, and speaking out Shi Jak! At this signal the Timekeeper will start the clock. MOVING INSIDE THE RING 14

15 During a round each contestant can move about the ring as long as they keep at least one foot within the ring. The Center Referee can move about the ring area while the other ring officials remain in place. ENDING OR STOPPING A ROUND Gu Man! is the verbal signal for contestants to stop Ja Yu Dae Ryun in a round. At this signal the Timekeeper will stop the clock. Both contestants must immediately halt any offensive technique, return to their starting positions, and stand at attention facing each other. This signal will be given by the Timekeeper at the end of a round s time, or by any judge calling a warning. The Center Referee may also give a simultaneous physical signal, as appropriate. The Center Referee will tally the necessary calls beginning with warning calls followed by winner of round calls, and make all determinations before restarting a round, starting the next round, or ending the match. ENDING CEREMONY After the last round and tallying is complete, the Center Referee will signal the contestants to bow to each other and turn towards the south. The Center Referee will stand between both contestants and signal a realignment towards the Head Table, hold each contestant by the wrist, raise the hand of the winner, release the wrists, signal to bow to the Head Table, signal for the contestants to realign toward ring south and to bow to the Center Referee. LEAVING THE RING Both contestants will simultaneously proceed backwards until outside of ring north, bow to the ring, raise their right fists and speak out Soo Bahk! or Tang Soo! turn towards each other, shake hands, then proceed to their off-ring positions. 15
