2 INTRODUCTION PURPOSE AND VISION OF THIS MANUAL Dear Students and Parents, I am honored to welcome you to our Soo Bahk Do family! The Moo Duk Kwan has a long history of camaraderie and friendship that allows us to enjoy training and building relationships that can last a lifetime. Through our Moo Duk Kwan training we develop external, internal and mental strength (weh khang, neh khang and shim khang) that can be used to overcome any obstacle you may face. It is my personal mission to pass on the art of Soo Bahk Do to you, my student, with the same sense of joy and fulfillment that I have continously received since I began training at age nine. It is my hope that you will find the answers to many of the questions right here in this guide. This is your resource for testing requirements, Korean terminology, details on proper discipline protocols, and much more. I designed this guide as the book I wish I had when I began training as a white belt and was progressing through the ranks towards Dan (Black Belt). This guide will also serve as an interactive component to training, with a page for all of your Soo Bahk Do milestones and dates, history and terminology research guides for testing, and an event participation guide that I will sign when you support Soo Bahk Do across the region and throughout the nation. I look forward to training with you and seeing you reach your highest potential as a member of Rupert s Karate Academy and the Moo Duk Kwan. Soo Bahk! Mr. Tim Rupert 2

4 ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR Mr. Tim Rupert (Dan Number 43,822) is currently a Sam Dan (Third Degree Black Belt) and Kyo Sa (Certified Instructor) in Soo Bahk Do/Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan. He is the owner and head instructor of Rupert s Karate Academy, and established the Naples, Florida chapter of the Moo Duk Kwan in Mr. Rupert began training in Tang Soo Do on January 29, He tested for Cho Dan (1st Degree) on April 3, 2004, Ee Dan in 2006, and Sam Dan in Shortly after becoming a Sam Dan, he began teaching professionally for his original instructor. It soon became apparent that teaching and striving to impart the same sense of fulfillment that Tang Soo Do gave him would become his life s passion. In March 2011, Mr. Rupert became a student of Master Frank Schermerhorn of Winding River Soo Bahk Do in Binghamton NY and joined the U.S. Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation. He recertified his Sam Dan ranking in the 128th Dan Classing held in He became a Jo Kyo (Assistant Instructor) in 2012, and tested for Kyo Sa (Certified Instructor) in Alpharetta, Georgia in Mr. Rupert relocated to Florida in 2013 solely to spread Soo Bahk Do to an area of the country that had not been exposed to the art. Mr. Rupert has competed extensively in Soo Bahk Do and also in open Korean martial art tournaments throughout the northeast. He was a member of the 2012 Region 2 Sparring Team that became national champions at the Cherry Hill, NJ tournament that year. He won Grand Champion in forms both years that he attended the Mid-Hudson Moo Duk Kwan Championships in 2012 and 2013 and has been the gold medalist in Forms at the Nationals every year he attended (2012, 2013, and 2015). Competition is not an integral part of Soo Bahk Do, but through participating in Black Belt tournament divisions for over a decade, Mr. Rupert has developed a critical eye for technique that allows him to help students maximize their full potential in training. 4

6 BEGINNING YOUR JOURNEY WITH RUPERT S KARATE This is the timeline you will follow on your journey to black belt and beyond. Traditional Martial Arts Atmosphere A special student/instructor connection that is strong and supportive is formed when you begin training in Soo Bahk Do. This is unique and beyond the simple purchase of a service. A high level of mutual respect is required between all involved parties, from Instructor to Student, Student to Parent, and Parent to Instructor. As a student, it is expected that full attention and effort will be applied to your training. As a supportive parent, it is expected that you will communicate any needs or concerns - medical, financial, or otherwise - to the instructor so they may assist you in making arrangements, whatever they may be, to maximize the student s experience. Becoming a White Belt As you begin training and earn your white belt after your first few classes, you may find certain aspects of Soo Bahk Do challenging - That s a good feeling! You are engaged in a worthwhile activity that can benefit you for a lifetime! It will generally take about 5-6 months for students to build strong habits in training that will qualify them for their 8th Gup (Orange Belt). Continue to refine your technique during this time as you are laying the groundwork for new and exciting techniques you will learn very soon! Attendance Contact Mr. Rupert in advance of a missed class. It is your responsibility to schedule make-up classes or private lessons. After each class, student attendance is recorded on each member s attendance card. Children receive a grade of A, B, or C based on listening skills and effort. This is a main factor in determining testing eligibility. To receive an A, students must demonstrate their best effort and a strong ability to follow directions. A B is failing to follow one of those rules, and a C is a failure to demonstrate either. 6 Spotlighting Progress As testing approaches, you will participate in Spotlights, checkpoints that highlight your progress. White Belts will have the opportunity to earn colored stripes each month until their material is strong enough to demonstrate at a test. Orange Belts and above will Spotlight once before testing, and this occurs when technique is demonstrated with consistent effort and ability. Students at this level will Spotlight in class during testing week. Always demonstrate with the mindset that you are being evaluated for rank, as it is the effort demonstrated in class on a daily basis that qualifies a student for testing, not a time requirement. See a successful Spotlight as a return on your hard work and that you will soon be invited to test for your next rank!

7 Testing for Official Rank Rupert s Karate Academy is a proud member studio of the U.S. Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation, to which all students must belong before testing. Your Federation membership allows you to earn rank certificates bearing the Grandmaster s signature that are accepted at every Soo Bahk Do school in the world. Students will be invited to test based on their attendance, effort, skill, completion of Spotlights, and time requirements. Testing is comprehensive, so all previous material must be demonstrated in addition to your newest material. Make sure that your Federation membership is current and that your test fees are paid prior to testing. Special Events Attending specially scheduled events is a way to demonstrate support of your dojang and the art. In Region 4 of the federation (FL, GA, AL) we have our Winter Camp in Ocala every February, Dan testings held every April and October, the Space Coast Championships in Melbourne/Viera in September, Regional Examiner clinics held throughout the year, and our tournament held in March. Attendance at as many studio events as possible is requested and attendance at one travel event is encouraged a year. Connection This Student Guide is one of many ways that you can stay connected to your studio and even your Federation. Review the test requirements contained in this document to ensure a strong command of your material and a positive experience come testing time. Use rupertkarate.com as a resource as it contains a wealth of information with everything from history of the art to our current class schedule. Like the studio on Facebook for news, events, closings, special training tips, and pictures, and subscribe to the YouTube channel for videos of forms, self defense, the technique of the month, and everything in between. These are produced to help you become the best martial artist you can be! Tuition You will receive a tuition invoice in your the first weekend of each month. You may pay your invoice online or in person with any payment method you like before the 21st of the month. If a payment has not been received by the 21st, a $15.00 late fee will be applied. This allows our studio to keep the YMCA happy by paying early, and payment cannot be submitted until all tuition invoices have been paid. If for any reason you wish to cancel your membership, please provide Mr. Rupert with one month s notice (no less than 30 Days) as a courtesy before discontinuing. 7

8 COURTESY AND ETIQUETTE IN SOO BAHK DO TRAINING Follow protocol at all times to demonstrate discipline and respect in the dojang. Please arrive for class at least 5-10 minutes early. Students who are late for class will not receive attendance credit which is required for testing. When you enter the dojang, stop at the door, face the flag wall, salute the flags and bow. This shows respect for the area in which we train. Upon Arrival, share a bow with the instructor and any students you see, regardless of rank. All Dan members are to be addressed as Mr./Ms. (Last Name). Address Masters and Dans with instructor titles (Kyo Sa Nim, Master (Last Name), Sa Bom Nim) appropriately. Students are welcome to stretch and practice responsibly before class. Students should be silent, still and focused during the opening ceremonies in class. All parents and spectators are asked to be silent at this time as well. If you do arrive late to class, stand at the edge of the floor and wait for the instructor to bow you in. You may then stand at the end of the line and begin training. When the line reforms in between exercises, you may take your spot in line based on your rank. Take care of personal needs (restroom/water) before class starts. No water breaks will be permitted! When training with a partner, stay focused and give your best effort to help them train hard. As a general rule, students should avoid correcting members who outrank them. If you have a question in class, please wait until there is a break in the action. You may then raise your hand respectfully, and make sure to bow before you ask and after you receive your answer. When called to the front of the dojang to demonstrate or receive something, make sure to stand up quickly, say yes sir, run around the line (do not cut through) and bow to the senior at the head of the line. Run up to the instructor and share a bow. If at any time an instructor senior to all currently on the floor enters the dojang, the senior currently on the floor must call Cha Ryut! loudly and instruct members to face the senior. Call a bow to them much like during the opening ceremonies for class ( Kyo Sa Nim Kay Kyung Neh, or Sa Bom Nim Kay Kyung Neh, etc.). The senior will then instruct students how to proceed. 8

9 DO BOK TRADITIONAL UNIFORM OF SOO BAHK DO The Do Bok, or training uniform, carries philosophical significance, just like the techniques of our art. Our uniform is inspired by the roots of our style in the Korean Hwa Rang warrior-scholar class as well as the influence of Japanese/Okinawan Karate. The Hwa Rang have a rich cultural history in Korea just as the Samurai have in Japan. The training uniforms worn bear strong similarities to the uniforms Dan members in Soo Bahk Do wear. It is also important to note the influence of the Japanese and Okinawan traditional defensive arts (Karate/Kara Te Do, To De) on Soo Bahk Do, as the basic uniform is the same as those worn in these aforementioned arts. The Do Bok and Dee (belt) should always be treated with care. Fold the Dobok nicely and keep it clean and free of stains and wrinkles. Treat it like a military dress uniform. The Dee should be tied so the stripes hang on the left side. Children age 4-6 that receive stripes on both sides of their belts should have the end of the belt with more stripes hanging on the left. Never hang the Dee around your neck or let it drag on the floor. The Dee is a symbol of your hard work and achievements in the Moo Duk Kwan discipline, so treat it as such. Do not wash the Dee. Green, Red, and Dan level practitioners will wear the corresponding color trim on their uniform, with Green and Red only covering the lapels, and Midnight Blue for Dan members covering lapels, cuffs, and bottom border of the Do Bok. PATCHES ON THE UNIFORM PROPER PLACEMENT The Moo Duk Kwan patch is earned upon joining the Federation and is placed on the left chest. The Official Soo Bahk Do patch is earned when referring a friend who begins training. It is placed at the top of the right sleeve. The Tri-Patch, showing the U.S. and Korean Flags with the Moo symbol is placed on the left sleeve at the top.. The Studio Logo Patch is placed on the right sleeve. 9

10 MOO DUK KWAN BELT SYSTEM (L) SPOTLIGHT STRIPES (R) BEGINNER AND INTERMEDIATE RANKS 9th Gup Bo is an intermediate step available to children who begin training at an early age and require more time to learn and understand the basic materials. Not all students will be required to test for this belt and may be promoted directly to 9th Gup. 10

11 INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED RANKS Students who pass their IL Gup Evaluation will receive an invitation to test for Cho Dan in the next Dan test, and will receive an additional red stripe between their blue rank stripes. 11

12 MOO DUK KWAN PHILOSOPHY & HISTORY THE EIGHT KEY CONCEPTS Yong Gi 勇氣 Courage Jung Shin Tong IL 精神統一 Concentration In Nae 忍耐 Endurance Jung Jik 正直 Honesty Kyum Son 謙遜 Humility Him Jo Jung 力操正 Control of Power Shin Chook 伸縮 Tension & Relaxation Wahn Gup 緩急 Speed Control The Eight Key Concepts are important values that must be demonstrated in every action you perform, not only while training in the dojang, but in your daily life. It is important to note that the first five concepts are not physical in nature - they are all things you must accomplish mentally. Once the Eight Key Concepts have been applied to training consistently, you will see a great improvement in your physical techniques as well as your Shim Khang (mental attitude and spirit). Sa Bom Nim Frank Schermerhorn breaks four concrete slabs with a downward punch. Kirkwood, NY

13 PYUNG AHN Pyung Ahn Means Balance and Control, Peaceful Confidence, and Calm 平 and Comfortable. Pyung Ahn is not just a way to physically demonstrate, but a mindset to utilize when challenges arise, whether those challenges be for selfpreservation or other purposes. Pyung symbolizes a balanced, even scale. Ahn symbolizes a mother holding her child safely sheltered beneath a roof. The Pyung Ahn Hyung are a set of five forms, that predate the creation of the Moo Duk Kwan. They were created around 1870 by Master Anko Itosu 安 (Korean translation Master Idos ) and are practiced in other styles of traditional open hand martial arts. SAM KHANG The three areas of human development, or three powers, are defined as such: 外功 內功 心功 WEH KHANG means External Power. The techniques and physical actions that you perform have profound effect on your body, your well-being, and the well-being of others. As practitioners of a martial art it is crucial to develop control over physical strength. NEH KHANG means Internal Power. Control of breathing (Ho Hup Cho Chung) and coordinated inhalation and exhalation create a powerful connection between physical action and the internal organs to unify the entire body. SHIM KHANG means Mental or Spiritual Power. Unifying the External and Internal functions of the body is not enough to become a true martial artist without Intent. Shim Khang directs your eye focus, direction of action, and weapon discipline. 13

14 THE TEN ARTICLES OF FAITH IN TRAINING 1. Be loyal to your country. 2. Be obedient to your parents and elders. 3. Be loving to your husband or wife. 4. Be cooperative with brothers and sisters. 5. Be respectful to elders. 6. Be faithful to your teacher. 7. Be faithful to your friends. 8. Face combat with justice and with honor. 9. Never retreat in battle. 10. Always finish what you start. KWAN GI (MOO DUK KWAN FLAG) Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee founded the Moo Duk Kwan on November 9 th, He designed our Kwan Gi to symbolize the strength of philosophy in our unique art. The 6 seeds represent the 6 continents upon which Soo Bahk Do is practiced. The blue scroll represents knowledge. The fist represents power, justice, and strength in unity. The 14 laurel leaves represent the 14 provinces of ancient unified Korea. Soo Hand Moo Martial Bahk Strike 14

15 TAE KUK GI: THE KOREAN FLAG The elements of the South Korean flag influence the philosophy and action of the art in many crucial ways. The three unbroken bars in the top left corner represent Heaven (Chon), while the three broken bars represent the earth (Ji). The bars in the upper right corner represent water (Soo), and the lower left represent fire (Hwa). The center circle depicts Um (blue, passive) and Yang (red, active) moving together evenly. THE NAME OF OUR ART MOO DUK KWAN is the name of our organization, or style. It means the School of Martial Virtue, and encompasses the philosophical aspects that motivate and justify our physical techniques. It was first used by Kwan Jang Nim in HWA SOO DO was the original name for our art that Kwan Jang Nim used 1945 when the Moo Duk Kwan was founded. Hwa Soo Do means the Way of the Flowering Hand. Hwang Kee s original vision was strongly influenced by Tae Guk Kwon (Tai Chi) and more fluid, gentle actions that were not as recognized by the public in Korea at the time. TANG SOO DO was adopted as the name of our art by Hwang Kee in 1947 after discussions with his peer Won Kuk Lee, the founder of Chung Do Kwan. Tang Soo Do means the Way of the China Hand, and is written with the same characters that were originally used for Karate Do in Japanese, making it an instantly recognizable term. SOO BAHK DO was a product of Hwang Kee s research of the Moo Yei Do Bo Tong Ji, the oldest authentic Korean martial art manual circa It means the Way of the Striking Hand. Kwan Jang Nim incoporated as the Korean Soo Bahk Do Association in 1960, and adopted Soo Bahk Do as the name of his art in the USA in 1994, discontinuing use of the Tang Soo Do name in reference to his art. 15

17 IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING RANK TESTING The passage of time alone does not qualify a student for promotion. Specific standards outlined in the following pages must be demonstrated with maximum effort and skill in order for a student to successfully complete gup testing. A promotion in rank is associated with an increased level of skill and responsibility for techniques, both new and old. A student may not advance in rank until they demonstrate the techniques of their current rank at a high level. Students must fulfill a time requirement at each rank in order to effectively learn and process material. This time in grade is a guideline; the passage of time alone does not qualify a student for promotion. Students are invited to test based on their attendance, effort and skill in class as well as their completion of Spotlights and time requirements. Spotlights feature students current material and provide a clear understanding of their strengths and areas in need of improvement. Spotlights for White Belts will be conducted during the week of gup testing each month leading up to their 9th and 8th Gup tests, respectively. Orange, Green and Red Belts will Spotlight once before testing. Students at this level will Spotlight in class during testing week. Our Federation has provided a guideline of standards required for promotion to each rank as detailed in its Member Manual. These function as the minimum promotion requirements upon which our curriculum is based. In training, just as in any meaningful pursuit, to strive only to complete the minimum in reaching a new goal sets the student up for failure. When preparing for testing, please make sure to refer to the testing requirements detailed in the following pages of this document, as they go above and beyond to satisfy the Federation s testing requirements. 17
