1 1 The Winding River Karate Newsletter Autumn, 2013 August 26, 2013 Dear Fellow Winding River Students, I am writing to remind you just how much your participation is needed to continue the tradition of the Autumn Invitational Championships. Held every year since 1986, the Autumn Invitational is the longest running event in Region 2. At last year's event, we celebrated Sa Bom Nim Schermerhorn's 40 th Moo Duk Kwan anniversary, as well as the lives of Sa Bom Nim Margitich and Sa Bom Nim Walsh. It was a very special event, with the Kwan Jang Nim and 15 Kodanja members present to support the event. To ensure the longevity of this time-honored event, we must come together as a dojang and put the action philosophy of the Moo Duk Kwan to work. The action philosophy is very simple: just be there! Come to participate and watch your classmates and visiting students participate as well. Whether you have competed in 100 tournaments or you will be participating for the first time, you must participate to make the event a success and to help yourself, the studio, region and art grow. There is nothing easier in the world than making excuses. It is easy to be lazy on a Saturday instead of going to a tournament. However, when it comes down to it, the only thing that will advance our growth in Soo Bahk Do, and in life, is our leadership and courage to participate. No two events are ever the same, and there is always a great lesson that will help bring our training to the next level. Last year's event was very special, and we will be able to make this year special as well by showing our support. I always remember speaking with another Dan I once trained with about her first opportunity to compete in a tournament. She was a ninth gup white belt at the time, and believed that there would be nothing for someone of her rank to do at a tournament. Because she had only trained for a few months, she did not participate. She told me how disappointed she was that she did not compete. She recalled arriving at the tournament to spectate just as the division of adult white belts began. All of the other people who had the same amount of experience as she were proudly demonstrating what they had learned and proving to themselves that they could overcome nervousness and performance anxiety. For her, it was an opportunity lost. Do not let this be you. Regardless of your rank and whether you feel a little bit anxious about it or not, remember that all things in Soo Bahk Do are designed to challenge you in positive ways. Everyone at a tournament wants to see you succeed and do your best. Gup members, your presence is expressly requested to make this event successful to ensure that it will continue for years to come. Dan members, your leadership will provide inspiration for the Gup members who look to your example. Your participation is mandatory. Let's have a strong showing from our studio as it is our event by making it our goal to have as many members participating as we can. 2 Congratulations, Sa Bom Nim! At this year s National Dan Convention in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in July, Kwan Jang Nim promoted Master Frank Schermerhorn, Sa Bom Nim to the rank of Pahl Dan. That is eighth degree black belt! Do the math: if you assume it takes four years to get to Cho Dan, a minimum of two years from your Cho Dan test to be eligible to test for second degree, three years to test for third degree, four years to get to fourth degree and on up to eight years to get to eighth degree, that adds up to 39 years of training, learning, growing and leading in Soo Bahk Do! Your students congratulate you on this life and training milestone and thank you for your ongoing demonstration of the Moo Do philosophy in action, Sa Bom Nim! 3 Autumn Dan Testing The 132 nd Dan Shim Sa will be held on Saturday, October 5 at New York Military Academy in Cornwall on Hudson, New York. All are welcome! Come support Mr. Wurtenberg and Soo Bahk Do. Like Academy of Soo Bahk Do on facebook at Academy of Soo Bahk Do at Whitney Point. 3 Autumn Invitational Tournament The 28 th annual Autumn Invitational Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, October 26 th. As you can see from reading Jo Kyo Nim Rupert s letter on page 1, the event is a great chance for Soo Bahk Do practitioners or all ranks to grow both individually and as a school, as well as to renew or make new friendships with practitioners in other schools. Your participation will help to make both Soo Bahk Do and you, yourself stronger! Please plan on attending and add your name to the signup sheet. See you there! Coming in December Keep your eyes, ears and calendars open for the Winding River Karate Studio Christmas party! The annual event is not yet scheduled, but is coming this December. Watch for future announcements.
