1 Belt Testing Guidelines and Procedures Progress within Tang Soo Do is shown by the color of belts the students wear starting at white and moving to orange, green, brown, red, blue and finally black, with different requirements to achieve each level. (Please see the attachments for an explanation of our belt system and for what is required at each level.) Progression through the levels is accomplished through testing. Students must train a minimum of 3 months and 24 classes between belt tests. Scheduled test times are announced in our monthly newsletter and posted on the activity board. There is a fee for each belt test. Those looking to advance through the belts must also participate in our free, monthly Training Incentive Program or TIP to ensure they are retaining the necessary knowledge as they progress. Alternate test times may be arranged if any TIP or belt testing is missed. Minimum testing requirements for new students: Tigers and Dragons minimum of 8 classes over a period of at least four weeks Juniors/Teens/Adults (to 9 th gup orange/white belt) - minimum of 12 classes over a period of at least six weeks Teens/Adults (to 8 th gup orange belt) - minimum of 24 classes over a period of at least 3 months Students must be enrolled members of Valentin Karate with a signed Enrollment Agreement before they are allowed to belt test. Classes taken during an Introductory period will be counted towards the minimum required class/time. Testing Intent to Promote: Approximately one month before the scheduled test, Master Valentin will the Intent to Promote form to everyone. (Sign up for s on our website Paper copies will be available at each school. If you are not sure if you are eligible to test, ask your Head Instructor! Intent to Promote forms must be turned in (with payment or payment arrangements made) 2 weeks before the test for ALL students intending to test including teens and adults. Elementary school students must have the Intent to Promote form filled out by their school teacher and parent/guardian. Middle School students need the form signed by their homeroom teacher and parent/guardian. High School students need the form signed by parent/guardian only. 2 Test Day Procedure: Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled test time. Please show respect to your classmates who are testing by being as quiet as possible. This goes for parents and guests as well. Stop at the check-in table to pick up your test form. You will hold on to this form until you are lined up to begin your test. If you have not pre-paid for your test or have not made payment arrangements, you must pay at this time. A $10 late fee will be required. If you have not pre-registered, you will be given a blank testing form. You must receive permission from Master Valentin to enter the test. Quietly put away your belongings and sit quietly along the side or back of the training floor with your test paperwork in hand. Do your best! This is your time to shine! Graduation: Upon successful completion of your belt test, your new belt will be awarded during a graduation ceremony. Graduation will usually take place 2 weeks after the belt test. Date, time and place for graduation will be announced in the newsletter and at the tests. While we understand that there will be times when you cannot make a graduation event due to other commitments, please note that there will be a 2 to 3 week delay in receiving your new belt. December Belt Test and Graduation: Each December we bring the three schools together for a testing EVENT! All Valentin Karate students test together during the same one-hour period, with graduation immediately following. This test and graduation is held at the Meriden Boys and Girls Club. Masters and Black Belts from other World Tang Soo Do Association schools come to help us out by sitting on the testing boards. Family members and friends are invited to attend the testing and graduation ceremony. All students will have an opportunity to perform at graduation. As part of our ongoing commitment to community service, Valentin Karate hosts a food drive and a toy drive at this testing and graduation event. 3 What do I need to know for my test? As you progress through the ranks, you will always be responsible for all material previously tested. The table below lists requirements for those in our standard White through Cho Dan Bo curriculum. Tiny Tigers and Little Dragons For students in our Tiny Tigers and Little Dragons programs, belt testing is more about the journey than the destination. Students are expected to learn and improve on basic techniques being taught in class. Testing will include sections on hand techniques, kicking techniques, star-block-set, and the Tiny Tiger and Little Dragon forms. The requirements are not as strict as those listed above for our students in the standard curriculum. Testing provides the children with a sense of accomplishment and allows the Masters and Instructors an opportunity to formally evaluate the students progress. If Master Valentin feels that the student is ready to move up to the Dragons Class, that student will advance to yellow belt. If Master Valentin feels that the student is ready to move up to the Juniors Class, that student will advance. If a student advances before completing the Dragons Program, the student will advance to 9 th gup (orange/white) belt.
