President s Report Birch Entriken Bill Rogers photo Meeting wi RARA Irecently had a meeting wi RARA to follow up on some issues left over from e general meeting in February. As I mentioned in e last Forum, our credential numbers are going to be reduced, but not by as much as originally anticipated. Racers will notice is, in at ey will get 6 crew line passes instead of 7, and 7 banquet tickets instead of 10. We should have adequate numbers for our ops. and tech. people. It looks like we will have 28 spaces in e RV lot. Each racer is guaranteed one space at $50. Racers who do not camp may designate anoer to take eir space. If you need multiple spaces, you will need to contact a non-camper and have em designate you. Any unused spaces will default to e class to use as needed. Will is system work? Only time will tell, but it is what we have to work wi is year. Originally, it was announced at no pets would be allowed is year. That has been modified, and you will be able to have pets in your campsite in e RV lot only. No pets are allowed in any public areas at any time. As you will read elsewhere in is issue, e proposed races at Tunica and Tucson have been cancelled for is year, for various reasons. I don't have any information on any oer races possible for 2006, alough I would anticipate at we would again have an opportunity to go to Las Vegas. One ing at may impact future race venues is someing called FAA Chapter 49. Chapter 49 is not regulatory in nature, but it is essentially e handbook at e FAA inspector uses when he is assigned to oversee an air show or air race. This document was recently updated wi some significant changes. Firstly, it spells out race pilot and aircraft qualifications. Fortunately, e FAA brought in e experts, e race classes emselves, to write is part. Thus, pilot and aircraft qualifications in Chapter 49 mirror e rules and regulations specified by each class. Secondly, Chapter 49 states which organizations are recognized as official race classes, and whom erefore may sanction events and certify pilots and aircraft. This leaves pilot and aircraft qualification up to e individual classes, raer an e FAA. It also protects e race classes from being hijacked by a ird party seeking to stage a race wiout official class participation. Thirdly, and probably most importantly for future race sites, it sets standards for race course design and approval. Where previously, a proposed race course was left to e local FSDO to approve or disapprove, it will now be done at e national level. This approval must be obtained prior to applying for a waiver, and e waiver must be obtained not less an 90 days prior to e event. Heads up. Your purse money may be under attack! It has come to my attention at our friends at one of e oer race classes recently proposed to RARA at ey be given a portion of our purse. Their argument was at since Formula One never quite brings a full field to Reno, and ey (e oer race class) do, ey should get some of our money. Rest assured, Formula One has loudly protested is idea for a number of reasons. Our purse remains secure for However, ere is more an one precedent for is situation. The T-28s are gone. The Jets were gone, but only got back in wi eir own money. If anying, is is a wake up call at we need to do everying possible to get e maximum number of airplanes to Reno each year. Birch FORMULA FORUM, MAY

Tunica Cancelled But... Jeff Landers Press Releases T unica Air Races Cancelled for We want to ank all e fans, volunteers, pilots, crews and supporters for The Tunica Air races. Wi a great deal of frustration and considerable regret, e Tunica Air Race Association wishes to announce e cancellation of e 2006 and future Air Races in Tunica. "Whereas National and Regional sponsors have been secured in a record number, The Tunica Air Race Association is not willing to produce an event in a venue where e local business community doesn't support e event.", stated Tunica Air Race Association President, Jeff Landers. Through e efforts of 200 volunteers and bringing annual enjoyment to 25,000+ attendees, e air races brought hundreds of ousands of dollars to e community. It has also provided e means to raise funding for charity and service organizations and helped promote interest in aviation and its importance to e personal and economic well being of e citizens of Tunica. Jeff Landers, President, Tunica Air Race Association, LLC AIR RACING WILL RETURN TO THE MIDSOUTH IN 2007! Dear Pilots, Crews and Fans. I want to ank you all personally for your support of our races and air racing in general. We've secured unprecedented support from national sponsors as well as sponsors in e Memphis area for our event in Tunica for 2006 and seemed to be well on our way for an incredible event. Local support in e Tunica area including support from e casinos has been extremely soft. One casino informed us at, "we don't have to be a sponsor, you're going to come here anyway. Wi at in mind I find myself in a precarious situation. We want to grow e sport of air racing. However, all e efforts by your crews, our staff and e countless number of volunteers who come from across e country deserve a venue at supports our event and supports e efforts to bring is incredible event to e area. After several discussions wi our national sponsors and regional sponsors, we have decided to move our efforts from Tunica, Mississippi, to a new facility in West Memphis, Arkansas, just five minutes from e heart of Memphis, Tennessee, e home town of Elvis and e Blues. Our sponsors believe in us and ey all ink it's wor e wait. Wi over 1500 hotel rooms wiin a couple of minutes from e race course and ousands more in e downtown Memphis area, ere's much more to offer. A day at e races...matched wi a night on Beale Street at BB Kings...a stroll on e Mississippi River...all in walking distance of some incredible hotels. It'll be wor e wait. We are transitioning our efforts to e new venue and will be ready for racing May 31-June 1, Yes, we could have worked in e races for 2006, however, wi less an 90 days to make is transition I felt all would be better served to wait and have 4 FORMULA FORUM, MAY 2006

e event in As usual, rumors do fly faster an e Unlimiteds. This has been one of e hardest, yet easiest decisions I've ever made. Best to all! Jeff Landers President & CEO American Air Races, LLC MARANA Gossip overheard on AAFO in March: Missleer got an from Jeff Landers and he indicated at he was still actively working wi e folks in Marana to pull off e planned AZ Air Races. They (Marana AP) are in e midst of some construction mods and Jeff was sending em some of e info ey needed to help wi e process of getting e races firmed up. He sounded hopeful in e . However in subsequent contacts wi Jeff Landers by Ed Bowes, Landers indicated at Marana would also not happen until next year - bummer. Virginia. The oer rumor is at Virginia will be e site of e ird 2007 race by American Air Races. Edward E. Rankin Edward Rankin from Fort Wor, TX, recently visited our website s Guest Book and also sent Gary James (colleagues at one time in General Dynamics Advanced Design Group, I believe) a copy of e Formula One design at appears overleaf. He wrote: I am a retired (15 years) Aeronautical Engineer (40 years wi General Dynamics) and have designed airplanes all of my life. I have been designing, building, and racing Giant Scale (42%) F1 racing models since 1994, and have kept in touch wi e IF1 activity. Recently I was asked by an interested party to create several configuration concepts for a new F1 to try to inspire new builders. I have completed ree ideas and have submitted em to him wi e hope at ey will be posted on e forum to inspire new racing designs. I still do Aero Engineering consulting work. My most successful job was wi e Polen Special in having a part in e modifications to help Dick Keyte establish a FAI speed record. This is an interesting drawing in at it also shows e tail volume calculations required in conceptual design. I personally have some problems wi a swept leading edge on a racing wing section as a result of e accidents to Proud Bird and Rivets during relatively low speed turns in scatter situations. Perhaps a little built in twist would mitigate at however. I am sure Mr. Rankin would be interested if any of you want to talk about e design of new airplanes. 5 Column Editorial Last issue, Birch Entriken, our President revealed at e Former President was attempting to solicit entries for bo Oklahoma City and Tunica as a package, apparently persuading Jeff Landers at is was a good arrangement, wi e hope of obtaining a larger entry at Page. The loss of Tunica has probably made is moot since it is unlikely at Page can survive on its own, considering e minimal public response and e unfortunate events of last year. Organized air racing as exhibited by e classes just cannot afford to allow people to go out and race airplanes wiout some experienced operations and tech people being involved. 8 Pilot Profile Gary Davis Stephen Pearce ary and I grew up in Bryan, TX, and Gwe were childhood friends as our parents were close friends. My first ride in an airplane was in Gary s faer s Bonanza in e mid 1950's. We bo learned to fly at e age of 16 and actually soloed one day apart in Aug. of He went on to a career in aviation while I did not. Our pas did not cross much after high school until July of I was sitting under e wing of a Stearman at I had flown from Texas to Oshkosh. Gary was walking up e line of parked airplanes just checking out e Oshkosh scene. We caught up on old times and he told me of his adventures in air racing. He had been at Reno as a rookie in 2001, but had not been able to race due to 9/11. He was looking for a crew chief and, as I had been a crew chief for several racing endeavors involving motorcycle teams over e last twenty years, ought at I might have an interest. I joined up right on e spot and e rest is history. Aerobatic Team Eagles between air shows, learning to fly seaplanes and helicopters, earning his Silver C soaring badge, flying a Schweizer 1-26 to 30,000 feet to earn a Diamond Altitude Pin, and of course, Pylon Air Racing. In 1969, Gary went to Texas A&M University and in 1973 graduated wi a BBA wi Honors from e University of Texas. Since 1971, he has flown for 4 scheduled airlines providing passenger and freight service starting out as a Copilot in a Beech 18 and progressing to his present position as a Captain for a major air carrier flying e Boeing in international service. Gary holds an Airline Transport Pilot License in Multi-Engine Land and Sea Airplanes wi Type Ratings in e B-727, B- 757/767, B-747, B , CV- A340/A440, DC-3, DC-9, and DC-10. In e process having accumulated over 22,000 hours total time wi over 18,000 hours Pilot in Command time Gary started learning to fly under e tutelage of his faer at e age of 12 and soloed at 16. He remained active in general and sport aviation ever since and at last count has flown 86 different types of aircraft. He holds Commercial Privileges in Airplane Single Engine Land and Sea, Rotorcraft-Helicopter, and Gliders as well as a Flight Instructor Certificate wi Single and Multi Engine Airplane and Instrument Airplane Ratings. Highlights of fun flying include being taught to fly by his faer and later teaching his wife to fly, soloing in a C-140, learning aerobatics from Duane Cole, winning a "Best First Time Competitor" International Aerobatic Club award, receiving a low altitude aerobatic waiver from Gene Soucy in his S1T Pitts, ferrying Eagles In 2001, after buying e Ex-Bill/Gail Nusz Cassutt Baby Dragon, Gary attended e Pylon Racing Seminar and qualified to race at Reno at September, but of course did not race. He completed his rookie year wi a win in e Silver Final in 2002, and continued to race at Reno in 2004 and He also flew in IF1 races in Page, OK and Tunica, MS in Gary is married and has two sons. His beautiful wife Donna is a flight attendant. Corey is in high school and Ian is in college. Gary is an IF1 Director in charge of e Procedure Rules Committee. For e rest of e team, see our website at 8 FORMULA FORUM, MAY 2006

Secretary/Treasurer Input John Housley John Garrett photo Bill Rogers Welcome aboard to new members Jay Fisher from Calhoun, Georgia, and Mike Arnold from Crockett, California. We look forward to seeing you at a Formula One event is year! We have completed e prize money distribution plan for Reno is year and it has been approved by e Reno Air Racing Association. In short, we will distribute 10% for Qualification, 20% for e first heat, 30% for e second heat, and 40% for e final race (Bronze/Silver/Gold). The meodology used provides a nonlinear, steadily increasing reward as you finish higher in e overall field wi e top finisher earning approximately 2.5 times e bottom finisher. The equations have been programmed into an Excel spreadsheet so at you can project your winnings and answer your own questions of how much will I probably take home from Reno before entering or leaving home. Copies of e spreadsheet and a Word file describing e distribution system are available upon request at f1race43@att.net. We are also continuing to work hard on developing a new syllabus and training package in support of e Pylon Racing Seminar (PRS). You must download your entry forms from e RARA website at submit em by 12 May if you wish to race at Reno, and you ve not raced or attended e PRS in e last 2 years. As of today, ere were 0 (right, zero) people entered, according to RARA. We will continue wi e course material prep and use it for PRS 2007, if no one enrolls is year. Formula One is in good financial heal wi $16,064 in e bank. Several additional members have opted for e paper-less Forum and we appreciate eir contribution toward conserving resources. Fly Safely - John 5 Column Continued Even e FAA recognizes is and eir handbook specifically requires at e groups recognized by FAA be involved. I suspect at if e FAA understood at an outlaw race was being held, ey would deny e Waiver and e event would not happen. I also suspect at Bob Cannon s Insurance underwriters would re-evaluate e risk. Birch has stated at IF1 would not penalize people if ey did attend such an event; a wise decision since we have so few racers and cannot risk alienating anyone. Having said at, I can understand why an enusiastic race pilot is prepared to go anywhere at someone sets up a stick, but ere are many ways for ings to go wrong and air racing s future can be jeopardized just as easily at an outlaw event as at, say, Reno. Your IF1 Officials have an enormous dep of experience and ey provide an unmatched level of security - radios help, but we still have control towers at busy airports and air races are pretty busy places. Sonny Swenson is our longest running pilot and several of e folks out ere were in IF1 when he started! The issue is not just your safety but e integrity and well being of IF1 and air racing in general. It is very hard to race wiout a team and e IF1 organization is part of your team, so lets stick togeer and hope at Jeff Landers can put togeer a 3-race series next year. Bill FORMULA FORUM, MAY

Odds and Stephen Pearce, Gary Davis Crew chief, has told me about eir new team website, at It looks good and has rotating pix of various aircraft on display. Airplane News: Ed Bowes and Jim Debus have got eir hands on e original SnoShoe prototype, last seen incomplete at one of e Phoenix races. They are trying to get it ready for Reno. Gary Dalleske has sold Blackjack to Michael Kenner, who is at Whiteman Field in e San Fernando Valley area near LA. Michael is planning to attend PRS and keep e name and number. Smokey Young helped put e plane togeer and flew it for e new owner. Steve Temple wrote: Just to let e IF1 family know, I sold race 57 and bought Madder Maxx. The engine from 57 was pretty much gone after Vegas, so I ought I'd try someing faster and newer. It is in rough shape; sat in a trailer for 5 years and didn't turn once. I am currently freshening up e motor and removing all rat feces for pylon school. Probably going to be Race 87 and considering "Aggressor " or "Maddness" for e name. Should be running in e gold on Sunday. Regards, Steve George (Zip)Andre of Team Zipper, wrote: As a follow up to Steve's message about his new racer, I am e happy owner of Steve's former mount, number 57, Aggressor. I am busy fixing all e engine damage done on Steve's last flight at Nellis and am planning to be at PRS in June. The plane is remaining at Minden under e care of Air Sierra Unlimited and I am commuting ere regularly from St. Louis wi wrench in hand. The plane is being re-named ZIPPER, which is e common name for e F-104 Starfighter in Europe and a plane I was formerly a test pilot on at Lockheed. In addition, my mom calls me Zip. The new number of ZIPPER will be 1, a position I hope to be at least on e same lap wi in September. Cheers...George Andre Ebay has been a popular spot for F1 sales. Yellow Peril was advertized in April, but failed to make e reserve wi a high bid of $23,100. Also on Ebay was a 1962 Siersma SRC-1. Apparently built to F1 specs, but never raced, it features tip tanks and a fuel injected C-85. Tom Hallendorf s airplane has also been sold. RARA News: The Pylon Racing School entry deadline is May 15. The race entry procedure has changed in at ere are two deadlines (Received by RARA - NOT POSTMARKED), one for e entry forms and money (June 30 ) and later a final deadline for remaining documents, pictures st etc.(august 1 ). Supporting paperwork, medical, biannual, aircraft annual etc. must be current rough Sept 30 or your entry will be considered Conditional. Contact RARA at (775) for a packet. The new Airboss will be Greg Piers, wi Jeff Turney assisting. RARA has leased e ERA hangar, where e Sport Class is housed so we will be able to remain in our current hangar. The Jets are back in e Reno schedule. The Silver Club will not be e IF1 hotel is year since ey are converting it to condos. Ed Bowes has arranged 15 rooms for 10 days and 15 rooms for 5 days for $69 at e Holiday Inn on 6 St. Reno. Contact em at and ask em for e Formula One rate. 10 FORMULA FORUM, MAY 2006
