1 CORVETTE CORRAL AT ROAD AMERICA ELKHART LAKE, WISCONSIN If you have any interest in historic racing, this September 18-20, the Vintage Sports Car Drivers Association will be holding a Fall Vintage Festival at Elkhart Lake Road America. This event regularly attracts over 250 vintage and historic racers including Corvettes, Jaguars, Triumphs, Allards, as well as some rare pre-war models. The fan friendly paddock is always open to spectators for close-up views of these amazing racing machines.

2 Presidents Page by Tom Arvidson Members, Where has the summer gone? It seems to have raced by because Mother Nature put a target on most of the weekends and filled them with rain. We ve had some good days in spite of the threat of inclement weather so we can be happy about that. But the good times aren t gone yet. We ve still got some driving to do. The famous Fall Color Run will be coming in October. We ll be autocross racing and drag racing this month as well as checking out the old race track at the Meadowdale Car Show. So don t break out the car cover just yet. We ve got more in store for the summer/fall. If you think of anything we d be interested in doing this year, see Frank Punzio, our Activities Chairperson. 4 FALL COLOR RUN La Crosse, WI Oct. 9-11, 2015 TRIP OVERVIEW Meet At: Marriott Hotel, 4800 Hoffman Blvd, Hoffman Estates located at Prairie Stone Business Park, I-90 and RT. 59 When: Driver s meeting at 8:30 am -- have a full tank of gas. Fri: I-90 to Rockford where we ll head West to Dickeyville, WI and tour the Dickeyville Grotto. Then North to La Crosse to the hotel. We ll register for the event. Join us for dinner or attend the event social. Sat: Join Corvettes on the Fall Color Tour through the beautiful Hidden Valley Area with a stop for lunch in Richland Center. Continue on the run, returning to the hotel in late afternoon. Sun: Join a caravan home through the beautiful Wisconsin countryside with a stop at the Sunrise Apple Orchard, ending in Madison for lunch OR heading home if you so choose. 6 Theater-in-the-Vette or NSCC Does The Impossible Well not literally. You see on Saturday, August 15 th we had our annual Theater in the Vette event. 10 Cars and 17 club members traveled to beautiful McHenry, Illinois home of our favorite outdoor theater, The McHenry Outdoor Theater! There we saw Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation rated PG13 Beforehand though, we all enjoyed a delicious dinner at the internationally acclaimed, Fratellos Restaurant in historic Lakemoor, Illinois. Culinary delights ranging from homemade chili to succulent cheese fries and loaded up hot dogs to savory Italian beef sandwiches were enjoyed. What began as a rather scorching hot day turned a bit ugly around 5:00 p.m. as storms cut through the Northern Suburbs like a hot knife through butter! It came in fast and mean in the form of grey turbulent skies and torrential rain. Fortunately the tempest was short lived because by 5:30 p.m. things were looking awesome once again. The sun was shining and the clouds blew out over Lake Michigan. As we arrived at the theater, Scott Dehn and his staff at the theater were prepared for us and Ben the General Manager of the facility was extremely gracious and accommodating to our every need. With the sun slowly sinking in the Western sky, the anticipation for the film grew to what can only be described as a fever pitch. We carefully staked out our viewing spots and assembled in front of our shiny Corvettes for what promised to be a delightful evening of entertainment. When the movie began, you could hear a pin drop. Well maybe a bowling pin, a bowling pin dropped from the top of the movie screen tower, with a bell attached to it. But, I digress, as we settled in to our luxurious, fabric, folding chairs, the night sky was perfectly clear with not a cloud in sight. That provided a clear view to view what remained of the Perseid Meteor Shower; the annual celestial visitors dropping by planet Earth for their annual summer tour. We actually saw a few! John Jakubco spotted the most falling meteorites at four. The weather was very comfortable and the bug spray was flowing freely to ward off any would-be predators. Everyone had an excellent evening and although it was a double feature with the second film being Fantastic Four, no one stayed to view the second feature film. Perhaps no one could handle any more fun for one night. Perhaps some had fears of turning into pumpkins as the witching hour quickly approached, or perhaps it was the SHOCKING end of the movie when Tom Cruise.. 11 FROM THE EDITOR: By David Modra ROAD AMERICA! The name itself conveys many things, all good. If it refers to the roads of the country, it s very fitting as this track was laid out as a copy of country roads in rural Wisconsin. Road America is the first of purpose built road courses. Before 1955, races were conducted on the streets of Elkhart Lake. It is now arguably the most successful permanent road course in the country and has been praised by World Champions as perhaps the finest track in the world. The track is 4 miles long, winding up and down through the 523 acres of converted farmland in Wisconsin s beautiful Kettle Moraine area. Races are held on 8-10 weekends during the summer with various menus from motorcycles to vintage sports cars, Can-Am, Trans-Am, modern sports car prototypes, and even the NASCAR Xfinity series. For Corvette fans, there is a special parking area maintained by the Kettle Moraine Corvette Club of Sheboygan Falls. The area is for Corvettes Only and includes a small viewing stand and a wash wagon for those fans that arrive with a dirty Corvette. During the recent Nascar Xfinity races, I had the opportunity to attend and be a part of Corvette Corral. The picture gives you an idea of what Corvette Corral is all about. (Taken early in the morning) Fans who have never been there are missing one of the premiere racing venues within a 2 hour drive of Chicago. While many of the events are done for this year, be sure to consider attending next year. Even the Indy Cars are returning for a race after a number of years of being absent. Check out the RA web site at: The best races in my opinion are the July vintage races. Tons of the original Cam-Am and Trans-Am cars attend. Guaranteed enjoyment! And the track food is terrific!! 11
