1 Volume 24 Issue 2 May 2017 New York State Horseshoe Pitchers Association the Mud President s Corner Jerry brought his first official spring meeting to order in Waterloo. Jerry led the attending members in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence for our departed friends. He held roll call of the NYS clubs to obtain members represented for voting purposes. Members represented equaled 125 with 63 votes to carry any motions. Jerry reminded everyone that NHPF s Hall of Fame Museum in Wentzville, MO. still needs our support and that the NHPF still has the buy a brick program still on going or even a simple donation is always appreciated. (This is a beautiful facility and if you ever have a chance to visit you should do so). Jerry informed the attending members that the Elmira courts after a few bumps in the road they are definitely moving forward. He thanked Al Buckland in attendance for the donation of back boards, delivering railroad ties and a source of some great clay. Jerry also thanked all that have generously made donations to help get these courts to become a reality. He is in hopes that possibly being able to host the State Tournament in the near future. He stated he would like to recognize all in the near future. The position of 2nd VP and Sec/Treas. went unopposed so Jerry cast one vote for each. After the meeting some members braved the elements for a tournament named Spring Fling these results are already listed on the website the address being nyshpa.org Let the pitching season begin! Editor s Pitch On Spring Meeting At the end of February many members may have noticed that our website was down. The website made an update and wiped out nearly 20 years of files. After half a dozen phone calls we are finally live once again. However, we have a new website address so be sure to bookmark this I am sorry for any inconvenience but as always if you need any information please feel free to me. Across New York we sure had our share of snow not just measureable inches it came in feet. But alas, I believe old man winter is behind us once again and we all can look forward to pitching outside. I myself, am looking forward to getting outside and pitch on the clay. Although I am thankful we have our indoor facility in Groton for winter play, and it is hard to believe that has come to an end of another season. Just before this issue was to be printed I received word that fellow pitcher Duke McPherson had cataract surgery and sadly it has not gone as smoothly as it should have. He does have to have further visits to the eye doctor. So a shout out goes to Duke for speedy recovery and get back on the courts soon! ~Karen INSIDE Membership Info & Miscellaneous Page 2 & 3 Tournament Schedule & Treasurer s Report Page 4 & 5 NYS Championship Application & Club News Page 6 & 7 NHPA Membership Renewal Page 8

Norm said he has looked at how other State programs work and felt that by targeting community groups, schools and youth programs it would be a good start to increase our junior membership, (which currently stands at 2). Norm also felt that we may want to go to our County fairs, hold an adult/child tournament and possibly run clinics one or two nights a week. Norm also proposed the building of portable courts for this. Jerry Bernard felt that for us to have any success we need to get the adults involved as well. It was also suggested to have other activities besides horseshoes such as water balloons, ring toss etc. Anyone interested in working with Norm on this or those who may have other suggestions and ideas please contact him (his information is on page 2). state tournament site Host for the NYS Singles Championships will be Waterloo Ringers Horseshoe Club, located at the Waterloo Sportsman's Club, 2654 Edwards Road, Waterloo. 7 Volume 24 Issue 2 Page 7 Tri-County Horseshoe Club The Tri-County Horseshoe Club in Groton, New York wrapped up its indoor pitching season during April of this year. Since the opening of the season this past October, the club sponsored 25 tournaments, 2 evening doubles leagues (2 rounds), an afternoon singles league (2 rounds), and 1 round of a mixed doubles league. Seven of singles tournaments were sanctioned, but sanctioning was not required of players competing in the other tournaments and leagues. Membership in the Tri-County Club was only required of league players. Seven sanctioned singles tournaments were scheduled on the first Saturday of each month (October through April). The tournament director was Eric Conrad of Berkshire, New York. Over the course of the season, 276 players competed in these tournaments, coming from New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey. *Typically, there were 4 classes in the fall and up to 6 classes after the turn of the year. The winner of the A Class, which was handicapped on 3 occasions, was identified as the Tri-County Open Champion. Karen Graham was the Open Champion on 3 occasions, Ken Fraser 2 occasions, and Pennsylvania s Eric Brown on 2 occasions. With the exception of the month of April, 6 walking doubles tournaments were scheduled on the third Saturday of each month. Tournament director Eric Conrad signed up players on the day of this handicapped tournament. Although this was not a sanctioned tournament, many of the aforementioned singles players competed in the doubles. At the end of the season, 87 teams had competed in the walking doubles; the turnout was light in the fall and fully booked after the turn of the year. The following teams won the A Class: Karen Graham & Charlotte Reigles (October), Eric Conrad & Buck Gofgosky (November), Karen Graham & Dan Ough (December), George & Penny Harageones (January), JR Marks & Will Marks (February), and Karen Graham & Charlotte Reigles (March). B Class winners were John Laughlin & Bob Trank (October), Dave Mattison & Bob Odell (December), Marty & Diane Mills (January), Leroy Mast & Rusty Newhart (February), and Fred Sheldon & Cindy Cornwell (March). Ten quarter tournaments were scheduled at the Tri-County Club on open weekends under the direction of Charles E. Reigles (Charlie) of Owego, New York. The pitching fee was $3.25 per player, with $3 going to the club and the quarters going to the winner of the tournament. The various formats of competition created by Charlie were intended to challenge pitching skills with unique twists on the rules of play and occasionally combined with a game of cards or bingo. This non-sanctioned, handicapped tournament became very popular during the course of the season. Only 3 players won the quarter payout more than once; Charlotte Reigles collected quarters 3 times, Ken Fraser 2 times, and Buck Gofgosky 2 times. A high low walking doubles tournament limited to paid members of the Tri-County Club was held in March. In regard to the leagues mentioned earlier, the Monday mixed (gender) doubles league ended in December; the second round of the Wednesday singles league ended in March; and the second rounds of the Tuesday and Thursday doubles league wrapped up early in April. There was a high low payout tournament at the end of each league. The Tri-County Club s indoor pitching seasons was wrapped up by the Annual Appreciation Tournament on April 22 nd. This non-sanctioned walking doubles tournament was dedicated to highly regarded David Eric Conrad, who has been the director of the club s tournaments and leagues for nearly a decade. The A Class was won by George Harageones & Lin Standish, B Class by Lee Coon & Gary Fisher, and C Class by Butch Mosher & Rusty Newhart. On a closing note, Tri-County s Board of Directors also extends their appreciation to all the horseshoe players who competed in the club s tournaments and leagues this past season. The Club s reputation as a center of competitive horseshoes has been enhanced by this support. *The total number of players (276) does not imply different players, e.g. a player competing in 3 tournaments will be counted 3 times. Submitted by William Hornbuckle Round Robin Horseshoe Club This is the site where Dean Rogers built the courts. This property has been SOLD but the club is this going strong. Jan is going to keep the courts. Wendy Maston will be tournament director for Jan s Open. The address is 110 South Main Street, Delevan. This tournament has a max entry of 42 entries so plan accordingly. There will be 3 shifts. Contact info is on page 4
