1 Volume 23-Issue 1 Feb-Apr 2016 A Pitch from the Editor On, December 24th, it was a balmy 63 degree day and pitching outside on the clay was a welcomed reality. Pitching at the indoor courts in Groton are winding down already. If you have the itch to pitch go to Groton. Just about any given Saturday something is going on there as far as pitching. Whether it be a singles, quarter or doubles tournament someone is usually at the building. Other indoor pitching facilities are Floyd, Hamilton, Ontario and Erie, Pa. On April 16th at Tri-County HC, in Groton, there will be an appreciation doubles tournament for William Hornbuckle. Bill is a long time member of Tri-County and this tournament is to honor him for what he contributes to the game of Extra! Extra! Spring Meeting Set Being held in Waterloo! Details on page 7 horseshoes. Details are on page 6. Please remember that this years format for Championship Men (12), Women (6) and Elders (8) has changed. On page 2, I have the top averages in each group and also goes into detail who would be on the bubble. This will be updated in the May issue and online throughout the summer. Frank is wondering if anyone in our charter has or knows of anyone with portable courts that could be used in an event in Troy, NY. Is there anyone willing to make some portable courts? Please contact Frank K for further details. May you pitch lots of RINGERS this pitching season! ~Karen To send for your 2016 membership...see page 8 for the m e m b e r s h i p r e n e w a l application! President s Message Hi everyone, I hope all your Holidays went well. As President, I felt 2015 went well and that as an organization our problems still revolve around membership and getting our juniors out to play in the tournaments. Communication of new ideas or suggestions has been slow and I have not heard or received any complaints or concerns. I would also like to remind everyone that our Charter s Annual Spring meeting is just around the corner. I have asked the Waterloo HC to host the spring meeting and they have agreed. The meeting is scheduled for April 30, 2016 at 10:00 am. I again urge all of our Charter s clubs to make every effort they can to get at least one delegate from each club to attend and represent their voting interests. This spring we will have several issues that may change the dynamics of our organization and I feel that it is very important for all member votes and concerns to be heard. I also remind all clubs to notify our Secretary/Treasurer, Bob Klock, of who your delegates will be and that this should be done by March 31st. Independent members can also act as delegates for other independent members unable to attend, you will need written permission of those that you will be representing and will need to notify Bob with the number and names by March 31st. Looking forward to meeting and working with you to ensure our Charter s future. Hoping we have a great turnout for our spring meeting. Sincerely, Frank Kwiatkowski Inside this issue: Top Averages Horseshoe News Club Directory 4 Treasurer s Report... 5 Membership Info... 6 Spring Meeting Set.. 7 NHPA Application... 8

NHPA President Stu Sipma asked me to research this issue and make some recommendations to the board for future World Tournaments. I tested several different methods of making the stake white. Chalk is messy, doesn t cover well, and doesn t last long. Any method of non-aerosol painting, such as a small roller or brush, is just not practical. Shoe polish is also not a practical solution for this purpose. With all this said, here are the recommendations I have for this issue moving into future World Tournaments: 1. Quality paint: there is a huge difference in the type and quality of spray paint available. White primer has more pigment and will cover better. Trying three different brands, all at about $3 per can, they all covered far better than the cheap off-brands. Better coverage equals less paint needed. So my first suggestion is to purchase white primer paint, making sure it is the fast drying variety. 2. Have volunteers shake every can of paint purchased before it goes out onto the floor. Nobody knows how long the paint we purchase has been sitting on the shelf or in storage. This paint is not pre-shaken before you buy it. Shaking the paint can is hugely important. These exemptions are going to be tracked more closely, particularly at this year s World Tournament. If your charter has granted you a medical exemption, make sure you are able to provide copies of the NHPA provided exemption forms. Fuming (continued from page 4) 3. Open a dialog about this topic when we have all the players in the awards room for announcements. Explain that to minimize the overspray, hold the can no more three inches from the stake. Move up and down the stake with a slow steady motion. With a little practice, a person can easily spray a stake with two passes and very little overspray.
