2 Page 2 A Message from the President Message from the President, Bob Brody Dear fellow CCR Members, At the July Member s Meeting, one of our Members told me he would like to hear how other Members got involved with Corvettes. He suggested we ask folks for their stories and publish them in CCRuisin. I like the idea, so I will go first and share my initial Corvette experience. It was 1962 and I was a very impressionable 13 year old who was very interested in all things motorized, especially cars, to the point that I already had a subscription to Hot Rod Magazine. One sunny summer Saturday afternoon, I heard a car rumble up our driveway. The sound made me run to see what it was. To my amazement, a shiny red 1962 Corvette convertible sat in front of our house. In the passenger seat was my older sister, Pat, and the car was driven by her boyfriend, Jim. They had left in the morning on his new Harley, so I had to ask what happened. Jim told me they met one of his buddies who really wanted to try out the Harley, so they traded vehicles for the day. Wow! I couldn t believe either of them would do such a thing, but there I was, staring at the proof. I must have been almost drooling on the Corvette, because when asked if I could sit in it, Jim said Sure, I ll take you for a ride. Double WOW!! A ride in this machine? Could it get any better? Why, yes it could. When we got out of the neighborhood, on the main road, Jim really opened it up, smokin the tires away from the stop sign, burning rubber in second and bangin third. (Yes, it was a four-speed). The acceleration was like no other car I had ever been in. Triple WOW!!! What a machine! Flying up the highway with my hair whipping in the wind, I was hooked. I craved a Corvette. It took me many years before I bought my first Corvette, but I have never forgotten that first time I rode in one. That day I became a Corvette enthusiast, and I still am. So that s my story. Would anyone else like to share? On to a little CCR business Thanks to the OD s who have organized all our super Events this year. Great Job! And thanks to all the folks who work on all the things needed to make CCR run so well. Great Job! Upcoming Event Announcements follow in this issue of CCRusin, so take a look and decide which ones you will join us for. Get your Corvette out on the road and enjoy the scenic Virginia highways and byways with the Greatest Corvette Club in the World. Best wishes, warm regards, and remember to Save The Wave! Life is a highway, and I wanna drive it in my Corvette with my First Lady, Doris, as co-pilot. Your CCR friend, Bob Brody

5 Page 5 REVS & THE NCM By Barry Roper, NCM Ambassador/Lifetime Member It's August again and, in the Realm of the Corvette Faithful, the waning days of the last week of the eighth month of each year are synonymous with the Annual Celebration of the National Corvette Museum's opening in Unfortunately it always follows on the heels of the annual Corvettes at Carlisle extravaganza so for most of those afflicted with Fiberglass Frenzy, each year brings forth another choice to be made, with one door opened while the other closes. Certainly by the time this article is available, both events will be imminent and hopefully at least one of them is on your calendar. The 23rd NCM Anniversary will be celebrated this Labor Day Weekend, August 31 - September 2. It's not too late to register at the NCM. The Museum staff continue their winning ways by recently rolling out five new adventures involving Corvettes and/or the NCM Motorsports Park. The first is described simply as Ride in a Museum Corvette and it represents one of the ways to be more interactively involved when visiting the Gateway to All Things Corvette. For $20, a visitor may buckle into the passenger seat for a three mile ride which takes minutes. Currently the vehicle can be selected from among a 1966 Rally Red 327 Convertible, a 1979 Corvette Red Coupe, and a th Anniversary Convertible. Plan to reserve your ride at the Admissions counter upon your arrival at the Museum. Second is the Corvette Experience aimed at participants 18 or older possessing a valid driver's license. For $599, one may get behind the wheel of either an automatic or manual 2017 Stingray Z51 for laps around the 3.15 mile MSP. Included are three 20-minute on-track sessions alternated with three classroom sessions, in -car instruction, lunch, and a VIP NCM tour.
6 Page 6 REVS & THE NCM By Barry Roper, NCM Ambassador/Lifetime Member Third is the Corvette Touring ride during which a participant may drive one of the NCM's Corvette Stingrays behind a pace car for four laps on the track. The cost is $199, the driver must be 18 with a valid driver's license, and reservations are Highly Recommended. Fourth is the Hot Laps offering for a cost of $100. With this activity, the participant will be in the passenger seat while a professional driver executes two laps of the Grand Full Course at average speeds topping 100 MPH. The minimum age to participate is 12 and the minimum height is 4'6". How about an unforgettable present for a child or grandchild... or your spouse? Fifth and last is the Touring Laps activity costing $45. If you have your own car, one session includes four laps at average highway speeds. Passengers are welcomed and gift certificates are available for laps. Take note of the fact that visitors are always welcome to be spectators at the track without charge. Visit motorsportspark.org for a schedule of events.

10 Page 10 Upcoming Event Caravan to Carlisle by Lori Dolan Going to Carlisle? By Lori Dolan Vettes, Vettes everywhere you go in Carlisle! Don't forget to give the Corvette wave as you pass them! Corvettes at Carlisle runs Thursday, August 24 - Friday, August 27, This is the largest and most fun -filled Corvette event in the world. This event features more than 5,000 Corvettes representing all generations of America s classic sports car. Corvette enthusiasm is contagious with participation in autocross, burnouts and the parade through historic downtown Carlisle. The excitement continues with an incredible shopping experience, including a huge swap meet with a wide variety of vendors, an all-corvette car corral, Manufacturers Midway and Installation Alley. Register online (CarlisleEvents.com) or call today. Their online site can also help you find your hotel accommodations if you haven't already made them. Rooms are hard to come by, so you might want to try to make your hotel reservation for NEXT year as you check out this year! If you are new to the Carlisle experience, note that Pennsylvania 7-11s and grocery stores do not sell beer, so plan to bring what you ll want for the weekend or else you have to get it from a distributor. You'll do a lot of walking at the fairgrounds, so be sure to have comfortable shoes. Don't forget your nametags, Club apparel and Club radios. We have done the Saturday night parade 3 years running and highly recommend it. Over 500 Vettes drive 3 abreast through downtown Carlisle and the route is jammed with cheering spectators. Suggest you sign up for that along with Fun Field Parking when you register for Carlisle. We will drive up Friday morning. If you would like to join our caravan, meet us in the River City Diner parking lot at 803 E. Parham Road (Parham and Route 1, just off I-95). We will meet at 8:00 and depart at 8:15 a.m. Don't worry about breakfast--we'll stop about an hour up the road. Hope you'll join us.

16 Page 16 This is where the title is won and lost By: Jan Magnussen, Driver columnist Motorsport.com columnist Jan Magnussen gets set for a frantic period with Corvette Racing, and it s all to play for against Ford, BMW and Porsche. We re really in the thick of the battle at this time of the year in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with four key races over a six-week period. This is really where championships can be won or lost and it is imperative to maintain momentum during this stretch. The past couple of races the Corvette hasn t had the speed of some of our rivals, but brilliant work by the Corvette Racing crew has maintained our spot at the top of the points with a third and fourth place finish in the past two races. We are a very long way away from being able to cruise our way to the finish, however. Those BMWs were exceptionally strong at Watkins Glen and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and we re going to have to continue to up our game to compete. We do have past form at the next few races which although it counts for nothing now does fill us with some confidence. Lime Rock: A happy hunting ground Corvette Racing took its 100th victory at Lime Rock Park last year with a 1-2 result and Antonio Garcia and I also have recent victories at VIR and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This week we go from the track with the fastest average lap speed in the series in Canada to Lime Rock, which is the tightest road course on the schedule. This place is a real elbows up bullring where you have to fight very hard. Sometimes some paint gets traded, tempers flare and risks are taken. Staying patient can be a challenge. You need to be careful because this track is so small, if you make a mistake and have to spend time in the pits you can very quickly go a lap down. It s really hard to try to recover from that. This is one of the two races on the schedule this year where the GTLM cars get to compete for the overall win along with VIR. Going for overall victory Last year Corvette Racing managed to take both of these wins with Oliver (Gavin) and Tommy (Milner) winning Lime Rock and Antonio and I taking VIR. In the grand scheme of things, it really doesn t matter because the points are the same, but it is always nice to take that chequered flag. For these races, we can also put our heads down without having to worry about the prototype traffic at all. That s not to say there still won t be traffic, fighting with the GTD cars will be a challenge too because they aren t that much slower than the GTLM cars and also super-fast in a straight line. Optimistic over Kevin in Hungary Kevin has this weekend off before heading to Hungary. The past couple of weeks have been a little frustrating particularly in Austria where he was really fast in practice, only to have issues in qualifying and the race. The next race in Hungary although it really isn t the type of fast, old school track that we both like is a place where he has done well in the past. He scored a point for McLaren here back in 2014 and was really fast and took the win on Sunday in World Series by Renault. You can actually draw a few parallels between Hungary and Lime Rock in their respective series both are the tightest road courses on the schedule.
