1 Official Newsletter of the Symphony Volunteer Council of the Alabama Symphonic Association, Inc. President s Message The Youth Explorer Concerts took place September 19th 21st. Thanks to Linda Griggs, Mimi Jackson, and Debbie Reid for helping to make these concerts a success. These ladies also organize the Lois Pickard Scholarship competition, a major job for those involved and their hard work is appreciated. On October 6th, Char Bonsack, president and 2017 Decorator ShowHouse Chairman, presented a check for the proceeds of this wonderful event to ASO at the intermission of their concert. Susan Mason of B&A Warehouse, provided a reception for the event. Our Fall Kick-off Membership party on October 24th, at the Jemison Art Gallery, was a huge success. Thanks to Corbin and Kim Day for hosting the event and to our VPs of Hospitality, Zane Rhoades and Robert Raiford, for organizing the party. We also want to thank Beverly Lisenby for organizing a luncheon served to members of the orchestra on November 16th. Our next SVC event will be a holiday party on Sunday, December 3rd. The party will be from 3 to 5 pm at the beautiful home of Zane Rhoades and Robert Raiford. On February 22nd, 2018, the Lois Pickard luncheon at Vestavia Country Club, will have performances by the chosen scholars and a Silent Auction. This is a lovely afternoon and a good way to grow our membership. Special thanks to Sharon Bromberg, Phyllis Davis, and Rosa Minehan for their outstanding organizational efforts.

Invites you to the annual Lois Pickard Music Scholarship Luncheon Thursday, February 22, o clock a.m. Silent Auction (cash, check or credit card) Performance by Scholarship Winners Followed by the Luncheon Vestavia Country Club All proceeds benefit the Lois Pickard Scholarship Fund Reservations: $45 per person Friend: $100 (includes recognition in program book) The Symphony Volunteer Council considers music education as one of our main missions. For over 20 years we have held the Lois Pickard Scholarship Luncheon as a fundraiser to provide scholarships to talented young musicians ages 12 through 18. We ask our membership to support this event by: Marking your calendars for February 22 and attending Serving as a Table Captain by inviting your friends or garden, book or other club and filling a table for 8 people Contributing as a Friend Providing a scholarship for the 1st and 2nd place winners in piano, strings and brass/woodwinds/ percussion. The 1st place scholarships are $1,500 and the 2nd place are $750. These can either be made as an individual or in a group. Contributing a silent auction item. These may be an item, gift card or certificate from your favorite shop, restaurant or bakery. We also appreciate jewelry or other small items of value that are gathering dust in your home. 5 Volume 18, ISSUE 2 Lois Pickard Music Scholarship Competition The Lois Pickard Music Scholarship Competition will be held on January 20, 2018 at Birmingham Southern College. The Competition is open to serious and gifted young musicians ages 12 through seniors in high School. Students of strings, brass, winds, percussion and piano are eligible to enter in one category only. Entrants must be legal U.S. residents and reside in one of the following states: Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee. Acceptable literature for the Competition includes any one movement of a concerto written for the entrant s instrument. First and Second place winners in each category will perform at the Lois Pickard Luncheon at Vestavia Country Club on February 22, Scholarships are $1500 for 1 st Place and $750 for 2 nd Place winners in each of the categories. The Competition begins at 9:00 and all members are invited to attend a portion or all of the day s events. If you are interested in helping the day of the Competition or have questions, please feel free to contact Debbie Reid at Decorators ShowHouse 2018 Good news! We have selected the Decorators ShowHouse for This beautiful home is located on Cherokee Road in Mountain Brook. The 2018 ShowHouse sits on 2 acres, and has 5 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, and a pool. Opening day for the Decorators ShowHouse is Saturday April 28th, and the ShowHouse will run through May 13th (Mother s Day). Lots of volunteer opportunities are available, if you would like to help. 7 Volume 18, ISSUE 2 DECEMBER 2017 More volunteer opportunities... Guest Artist Hospitality Committee We still need a few more members for the guest artist driving committee. It's fun to meet the guest artists that come to town (and to hear them compliment our symphony, which they almost always do!). Artists pick up from the airport works best for teams of two so one person can wait in the temporary lot while the other meets the flight For more information and to help, please contact Emily Omura at or mefomura@aol.com Instrument Petting Zoo! Share the benefit of music with children in need and become an Alabama Symphony Zoo Keeper! Volunteers need to be prepared for a fun, high-energy, and noisy learning experience. Musical proficiency is not required but can be helpful. The most important element is an encouraging attitude and a desire to work with kids. Volunteers are required to attend at least one training session. You can volunteer for as few or as many upcoming petting zoos as you like, depending on which times and locations work for you.
