Danielle McCormick and Christopher Brake both posted NCAA Championships provisional qualifying marks, while Oshane Hylton and Yvonne Jeschke tied or established new school records... McCormick - UAA s indoor and outdoor female record holder at 800 meters - registered a provisional time of 2 minutes, seconds (8th nationally)... the Soldotna junior, who s indoor record is 2:10.68, finished first among all collegiate competitors at the meet and third behind two professional runners... sophomore Christopher Brake leaped higher and further than any DII athletes in two events... Brake recorded a provisional high jump of (22nd nationally) - moving into third all-time in school history - and followed with a triple jump of sophomore transfer Oshane Hylton tied the 60-meter school record in his semifinal heat, clocking 6.97 seconds... Cody Thomas set the record on Jan. 16, junior Yvonne Jeschke established a school record in the 600 meters (1:38.80), a non-championship event... other women s top performers included Tamara Perez, who finished the meet as the fastest DII runner in the mile, clocking 5: following closely behind in second for DII was fellow senior Mariah Burroughs in 5: McCormick, Perez and Jeschke teamed up with sophomore Vanessa Aniteye on the women s 4x400-meter relay team, finishing first among Div. II programs in 3: sophomore Marie Ries performed well in both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes... she tied her collegiate best of 7.94 at 60 meters (3rd for DII) and covered 200 meters in (5th for DII)... on the men s side, the 4x400-meter squad of Daniel Remington, Darrion Gray, Nicholas Taylor, and Liam Lindsay bested all other DII teams, clocking 3:22.58 for fourth overall... Lindsay was the second swiftest DII runner for 400 meters, crossing the line at Gray ran 7.04 in the 60-meter dash and for 200 meters... freshman Felix Kemboi debuted in the 3,000 meters and became the 10th fastest Seawolf in the event (8:33.11, 5th DII). BRAKE HONORED BY GNAC: Alaska Anchorage sophomore Christopher Brake was named Men s Field Athlete of the Week by the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, following his NCAA Championships provisional qualifying high jump of 6 feet, 8.75 inches at the UW Preview in Seattle, Wash... Brake, from Nelson, New Zealand, nailed his second attempt at (2.05 meters) to move into a tie for ninth in the GNAC record book and improve his leap of 6-7 set at the 2016 GNAC Indoor Championships... he surpassed the NCAA Championships provisional qualifying mark of (2.04 meters) and currently sits third on the UAA men s all-time indoor list... Brake placed third overall and best among Div. 2 2018 OUTLOOK: UAA returns 26 athletes (14 women, 12 men) who have already competed for the Green & Gold... five total 2017 All-Americans return, including sophomore Vanessa Aniteye (4x400) - who broke the 400-meter school record (55.89) - and Caroline Kurgat (3,000 meters) for the women as well as the majority of the 4x400 men s squad (Darrion Gray, Liam Lindsay, Nicholas Taylor) All-America senior Tamara Perez in the DMR is back for the women s squad, owning the second fastest times in school history for the 800 meters (2:10.97) and one mile (4:53.09).. Soldotna s Danielle McCormick will contend with Perez, bettering her own indoor 800-meter record (2:10.68) during the outdoor season (2:07.60)... senior Henry Cheseto runs for the UAA men again, after earning both the third highest marks in program history at 3,000 meters (8:11.81) and 5,000 meters (14:12.99) in David Sramek will also be a threat in several events, including the pentathlon... the Seawolves welcome three transfers that look to make an impact instantly in the shorter and middle distance events... junior Yemi Knight joins the women s program after competing for Div. I Jackson State, while Oshane Hylton (Lincoln Univ. of Missouri) and Eduardo Orozco (Hartnell College) bolster the men s roster NCAA AND INDOOR SEASON RECAP: The Alaska Anchorage men s and women s track & field teams concluded the indoor season with a UAA-record 12 All-America honors at the 2017 NCAA Div.
