Minutes of Zone 8 BCSGS General Meeting held September 20, 2018 at Chief Louis Centre The meeting was called to order by President Linda Haas at Attendees: 21 Moved by Bev Ohms and seconded by Kathy Brandt that the agenda be approved. Motion passed. Moved by Shirley Vezina and seconded by Monte Kilborn that the minutes of the June 21, 2018 meeting be approved and posted to our website. Motion passed. Officer s Reports 1. Director s Report: Russ Reid a. The 55+ Games at Kimberley/Cranbrook just completed showed the difficulty of having the Games in smaller distant communities with the travel times and costs. There were approximately 2400 Participants compared to 3600 in Vernon. There were a lot of late withdrawals and cancellation of events. The weather was marginal, particularly after a rainless summer. Nonetheless, the organizers maintained a positive attitude and worked hard. Hockey was perhaps the best it has ever been managed, but there only 12 Men s teams in 3 Divisions. A highlight was the first 55+ Women s Hockey with 6 teams competing. Vancouver defeated Cranbrook 2-1 in the Gold Medal game before a substantial and enthusiastic crowd. Unfortunately between Bocce and Hockey, I didn t have time to see much else. Comments would be appreciated. b. With the absence of Carpet Bowling as a sport at the BC Games, a competition organized by Members of Zone 8 was held in Kamloops Sept. 8th and 9th under the auspices of the Tournament Capital Games, in turn run by the City of Kamloops Parks, Rec, and Culture Dept., who actively helped with the Event. It was decided to have just a Teams of 3 Players tournament and this seemed to be a positive. 30 teams of 3 arrived without a single no-show. There were some spares and supporters as well making the total about 100 people. Bob Currie, Head of Carpet Bowling in BC, came from Fraser Lake and was there throughout. The exciting thing was that approximately 50% of the teams were new to Tournament Carpet Bowling and this should help turn-out in Kelowna next year. As a result of their success on the 8 th and 9 th, Linda Verhoeven, Sharon March, and Hec Denton have obtained the 2019 Provincial Championships for Kamloops next May. 3 c. Competition from other Communities. On Labour Day weekend we had the NSA all ages Slo-pitch Tournament which attracted 90 teams. Sept. 8 and 9 weekend had a 30 team Seniors Slo-pitch Tournament here so that Slo-Pitch at the 55+ Games was virtually annihilated. Parksville had a major Seniors Hockey.
d. Give It a Try. This was a new program partnering the BCSGS with the Parks and Rec Depts. of various communities to promote 55+ Games events to Seniors and give them an opportunity to try them out with a view to increasing general activity and participation. Joanne Larocque, our Area Rep, ran a successful program in Merritt. Most Zones were quite positive about producing this again next year. d. Executive Changes. Linda Haas will not be running for President again after 5 busy and productive years. Russ Reid will not be running for Zone Director, Zone 8 Hockey Sport Event Coordinator, or Bocce SEC to focus on Kamloops Senior Hockey. These positions and others will need to be filled with election or appointment. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Zone 8 and BCSGS Boards- the best part was the number of great new people I ve met. It was certainly work but never boring! 2. Registrar s Report: Heather Sinclair She was unable to attend due to illness. By she said that she did not have anything to report. 3. President s Report: Linda Haas Congratulations to all who attended the Kimberly/Cranbrook Games, and those who won medals. The volunteers, officials, and even people we casually met in town were friendly and helpful. Zone 8, South Central, is tied with Zone 5, Okanagan/Similkameen, for 6 th place in total medals won, but earned 4 more gold medals and 3 more silver medals than our zone 5 neighbours. We were disappointed that a significant number of participants dropped out after registration close and before the Games. For those with medical issues, we hope you are on the road to recovery. Although a fairly long drive, the destination was worth it. We enjoyed spectacular scenery, entertainment, and good support. Only the weather did not always cooperate but it wasn t terrible and did not dampen the spirit of the event. The Opening Ceremonies not only were informative and entertaining, they moved along with interesting and short, but significant, speeches from the dignitaries. Well done, East Kootenays! In our zone, special thanks to Heather Sinclair, Registrar, Sharon Green, Treasurer, Russ Reid, zone 8 Director, and Bill Smedley, Logo wear Chair, for the extra duties before, during and after the Games.
Tickets for fund-raiser lunch at the Lotus Inn Restaurant after the AGM on Oct. 18 are available today. Please take a book or buy a ticket. Tickets may also be ordered by phone (Linda ) or haaslindatony2@gmail.com The AGM on Oct. 18 will be the Zone wrap up for this year. We will celebrate the contributions of those retiring, those continuing to serve on the executive, as sport event coordinators, and area reps, and those who wish to enjoy new involvement in our South Central Zone 8. Elections will be held for Director, and President. We have one nomination for Director at this point. If you wish to nominate someone for either position, please let me know as I will not be running for any office in We hope to see you all at the AGM on Oct. 18, and at the lunch afterwards. Tickets are available today after the meeting or call me at Thank you everyone for your ongoing support for Zone 8 and all the 55 +ers involved within. 4. Treasurer s Report: Sharon Green Sharon reported that the Gaming Account as of August 2018 has a balance of $41,970.97, with 2 outstanding cheques in the amount of $ The Operating Account as of August 2018 has a balance of $ Sharon raised the issue of whether the yearend financial statements should be audited. The executive decided that this was not necessary. Area Reps: Ashcroft Maria Russell Martin Ashcroft Cache Creek Senior Centre stayed open all summer with most of its activities in place and with good attendance. The Fall/Winter program is now running. Two of its members Ken and Marion Scallion attended the Provincial Horseshoes Tournament held in Kamloops recently with Marion placing third in her event. They were very pleased with the set up and with Kamloops opening up four more pits. Looking good for 2020 Games here in Kamloops we vote yes! Senior Games comments from participants. Paul and Janet Quesnel and Barb and Dwight Hodder won a silver medal in ice curling. Sandra Talarico got the first goal ever in Women s Ice Hockey with an assist from Marianne Munro... Jim Gyoba was interviewed for our local paper before he went but alas he did not place in his event - Darts. Our local paper will be doing another article with pictures this week. Everyone had an exciting time. With the Games in Kelowna next year I foresee many more of us attending. PS I stand to be corrected in any of the above!
Barriere/Little Fort Sharon March September 8/9 was a busy weekend with 30 carpet bowling teams, from around the province and Yukon, participating in the Kamloops Tournament. Little Fort organized the weekend with help from Kamloops and Russ Reid. There are very few members left in Little Fort but, as Russ said, we're rabid about carpet bowling. Barriere bowls on Tuesdays and Thursdays; Little Fort bowls on Mondays and Fridays. A couple of avid bowlers go to Little Fort on Wednesdays. There still is Chiai Chi Wednesdays in Little Fort and badminton twice a week at the hall. September is the BC AG Expo at the North Thompson Agriplex. September 29 is the Fall Variety Fair at the Senior's Centre in Barriere. September 29 there's Oktoberfest dinner and dance at the Barriere Lions Hall. Chase Inky Whalley a. 5 d. Parkside Estate bingo 1 pm Kamloops a. Track and Field Kathy Brand It was cold, wet and windy for Track and Field. Some of us couldn t help noticing how comfy the badminton players looked in the gym. It was very tempting to think about changing sports. But we preserved and did well. We are a tough lot. I tried to get the results on the website but it wasn t working. We had only 15 participants but I m sure we accounted for a third of the zone medals. The host committee did a great job of putting the track and field meet on. They had a lot of hurdles to jump to get it organized and running smoothly, one of them being no hurdles. They had bought hurdles but they turned out to be very unsafe to at the last minute rented enough from the Kamloops Track & Field Club for one lane. The organizers, volunteers and officials were excellent. Even in the windy, rainy and cold conditions, they did their jobs well and kept smiling. The Sport Chair, Laurie Stewart, had a massive job but managed to do it as well as compete in the 10 km run. And, amazing, she was still sand when I saw her on Sunday. b. Dragon Boating Phil Maher There were 4 teams from our zone. The Kamloops Women s team won gold in Division 2, GT Racers got bronze in the mixed division 1 and Shuswap Coots got bronze in the Womens division 1. We had a serious problem trying to get the boat provider deliver the the afternoon before the race day so that teams could have practice sessions. Normally at festivals the boats are available the day before the festival begins. I was not able to communicate with either the Sports Chair or the Zone Coordinator. The volunteers at the site did an excellent job. Although the weather was cold and windy at times the race director did a good job in making sure the race schedule was completed in a timely fashion. I was told that the Zone Coordinators meeting would be held after our final race on Thursday afternoon at the Pub at Wasa Lake festival venue. After waiting 30 minutes I was then advised that the meeting would be held in Kimberley, which was a 45 minute drive away. I did attend the meeting. There was only one
other zone coordinator in attendance along with a provincial representative so we did not have enough attendees to make a quorum. Merritt Joanne Larocque The Merritt Senior Centres programs are up and running except for shuffleboard at the moment. Programs are listed in Seniors paper The Connector and local paper. We are starting a new drop in lunch program $5.00 for soup and sandwich the 3rd Friday of each month. Nellie Holuboch our vice president has stepped up as the intern President as Ed Collins passed away June 21. He will be missed. Ed served on our board as president for almost 2 years. He had attended and represented the Merritt Seniors Centre at our zone 8 games meetings for several years and some of you on the board knew him. We miss him and appreciate his dedication to our centre. The month of October we have elections for the executive and directors. Today our centre is hosting the regional Meeting of O.A. P.O for the North Okanagan as we are associated our branch number is 168. Shirley Vezina and Joanne Larocque will be stepping down as Merritt Seniors Reprehensive and Sports Coordinator for Zone 8 Floor Curling. New contenders at this time are Whally and Phyllis Ebare (medal winners in track and field 2017) they will attend the Octobers Meeting. Bob Leech who has moved back to Merritt this month agreed to be the sports coordinator for floor Curling the 2 teams that went to the games felt he would be a good choice as he came out to our practices and is familiar to all of us, we understand this could happen based on zone 8 games executives approval. We are proud to announce our floor curling team won silver medals this year. Shirley and I thank you for the opportunity to serve as ambassadors for the 55 plus games zone 8 and will continue to help promote community involvement in the 2019 Games held in Kelowna. Salmon Arm a. Hellen Byron
The Games are over for another year. I give Kudos to Cranbrook/Kimberley for putting so much effort into hosting the games. The opening ceremonies were one of the best I ve attended. The speeches were interesting and concise. The one clap system worked well. The weather did not cooperate and for those of us participating out of doors it was extremely miserable. However we survived to compete another year and expect the weather in Kelowna Games will be more cooperative. All the result are not posted so from what I could find for our area from Sicamous to Blind Bay we got 13 gold, 18 silver and 10 bronze. Curling - 3 gold (Mary Pakka 85-89) Dragon Boating - Bronze Shuswap Coots Womens; Bronze GT Racers mixed Golf - Bronze Don Tonks Ice curling - gold 65+ Womens (Trish Probyn s team); silver 65 + mixed (Wayne Merwin s team) Ice Hockey - Bronze 55 + Thunder Chiefs Pickle Ball - 4 silver (L&K Brown, D&L Kerr) Soccer - bronze (65+ C. McLeish, J. Wilson) Tennis - gold (A&D Harrison, J Wilson) swimming -gold, silver, bronze (M Hurlbert, T Van Meer) Tennis - 4 gold (A&D HARRSION, s Ford); 3 bronze (M For, I Greenough) Track & Field - 4 gold (H Byron, M Raffin, D Tighe); 12 silver (H Byron, M Raffin, D Tighe, Y Dibblee); 1 bronze (H Byron) The golf course will be closing. Curling will be stating and Pickle ball will be moving indoors. The Cafe at the 5 th Ave Sr Centre is open and all the activities at all the Sr Centres are listed in the Connector. b. Ellen Pakka We had a good time. Well organized. Lots of relatives cheered me on. There were time trials. Three grizzle bears eating at a horse carcass. Early start it was dark. I missed my friend Jean Nelson. During Road race (raining). We can t do anything about the weather. Saw some good curling events. There was a hill climb up the ski hill to the chalet. They were giving free rides in the chair lifts to the top of the mountain. Ask cycling rep about times. It s the dominant year for the Adams Lake salmon run Oct 1 to end of Oct spawning.
Revelstoke Lawrence Davis We have activities at the seniors centre Monday to Friday from 9am to 7 pm including: bingo; darts; bridge; cribbage; carpet bowling; billiards; and exercise classes.
