1 Nemato Change a Life success in life for youth, by youth April June 2018 Nelson Mandela Township Youth Empowerment Nemato Change a Life Highlights Opened: Nemato Change a Life Centre Gold at African Championships in Egypt Although still a lot of work needs to be done, we already moved into our new building. It gives us much needed space to run our classes and our many other activities. Three Nemato gymnasts and our coach were at the African Championships in Egypt. Our gymnasts won the Team Gold for South Africa. Breaking news: Approved as academy Lifa to Germany The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee has awarded our gymnastics club academy status! After volunteering twice to host Germans in the exchange programme between Lower Saxony and the Eastern Cape, soon Lifa will leave for Germany for a year. page 1

2 Success in Life - for youth, by youth Nemato Change a Life offers a holistic set of youth empowerment programmes for disadvantaged youth from the townships in Port Alfred: Nelson Mandela Township (Nemato), Thorn Hill and Station Hill. We give our youth the mindset, knowledge, skills and support to escape from poverty, for success in life. Nemato Change a Life Centre After long delays and many struggles we moved into our new building. It gives us much-needed extra space, with two large rooms that we have started using as classrooms for our maths classes and for many other activities including our sports, when the weather is bad. Many thanks to the Mike Thomson Change a Life Trust for donating us this fantastic building!!! The building is not yet finished. We are working on many projects like closing the roof, installing gutters, a water tank, wiring, lights, toilets and more. We even built a small banana farm to take care of our grey water. Some of these building projects we can do for free, but for others we need building materials. For example, we'll need about 30 bags of cement to plaster the walls. If you can, please donate money or cement! Many thanks!!!!!! Although we have done a bit of the house witring ourselves, the installation of our solar power system is not as easy, so we ll not do this ourselves. We hope to get it installed professionally soon. Nemato Youth Park & Sports Academy Now that land has been allocated to us for the Nemato Youth Park & Sports Academy, we are starting a big fundraising campaign to build it. The large sports hall will become a landmark of hope and success in our disadvantaged community and it ll put Nelson Mandela Township on the world stage for sport. Watch out for us at the Olympics!!! Towards the end of August we ll have a detailed concept document ready, that we ll take around the country and to America and Europe. 3 maths lesson by Andrew The University of Johannesburg maths lecturer and longtime Nemato supporter Andrew Craig did a lecture at our maths class. He showed us examples of challenges in maths that grade 6 learners can understand but mathematicians still can't prove. Thanks Andrew, a fascinating view into the maths kitchen! Ross Ironman for Nemato Congratulations to Ross Gearing for finishing one of the worlds hardest and most extreme Ironman distance triathlons, the Swissman. He used the opportunity to raise funds for Nemato Change a Life. Many thanks to all Ross donors for raising more than R25000 for Nemato! success in life stories Damian for business training at Raizcorp sports bursary for Buhle On average only 1 out of 40 applicants pass the tests to get accepted for the business training by Raizcorp. Well done and congratulations to Damian Marais, he made it!!! They ll train and assist him to run and grow the building company he started recently. Buhle Ngcelwane is studying biokinetics at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). He is in his second year and he has resumed his old sport: rowing. As one of the strongest old Nemato rowers, UJ has rewarded his talent and commitment with a sports bursary. It s already paying off in medals. page 3

4 Lifa to Germany skills training for Thembani in restaurant Lifa Nxobo has been selected for a one year exchange programme in Lower Saxony in Germany. He'll leave in July to volunteer in youth and sports organisations in Germany. He is our first member to get this great opportunity, congratulations!!! (Picture: Lifa in diving action during a camp earlier this year.) Thembani James loves cooking and has dreamt of becoming a chef. But where do you go? The Penny Farting Cafe and Bistro in Port Alfred offered him a great opportunity to get free training by learning in their kitchen, the whole range from cleaning the veggies to baking cakes! Nemato Sports Clubs Our sports clubs offer four small Olympic sports: rowing, gymnastics (tumbling and trampoline), handball and fencing. Sport is an important part of our youth empowerment programme. Our athletes compete at provincial, national and even international level. rowing champions gymnastics gold in Egypt There were gold medals for our rowers Thembani James, Akhona Quma, Thando Ngoqo and Xolisani Hina., at the National Championships in Gauteng, where they beat Buffalo Rowing Club, the University of Johannesburg and the University of Cape Town. Here they are pictured with coach Sheldon Nelson Three Nemato gymnasts and our coach Lee Budler went to Egypt to represent South Africa at the African Championships. They won the team gold award. Siyabulela Siwa won gold on double mini trampoline. Onke Mangele was superior in trampoline, but he was the victim of biased judging, which unfortunately cost him his qualification for the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. page 4

5 Nemato Gymnastics Academy Nemato fencers on SuperSport SuperSport TV came to Nemato to film our fencers about participating in the National Ranking Competitions. In the picture is Anoxolo Salaze is interviewed by SuperSport. first fencing tournament win Thanks to the great achievements of our trampoline gymnasts, we are now recognised as a Gymnastics Academy by the South African Olympic Committee! Bronze in Zambia for handball Our fencing team went to an inter-provincial competition in George. It was the first time we returned home with the trophy for the best club at a fencing competition. Brothers Lihle and Lifa Nxobo went to Zambia with the South African team for the Zone 6 Championships. Congratulations on the bronze medal, our first international handball medal! page 5

6 Facilitated and Supported Programmes To make our programme stronger we facilitate programmes from organisations that are specialised in fields such as literacy. We work together with other youth organisations, benefitting from each other s strengths. To make the best use of our capacity, we manage the office administration of organisations like the ECD Support Group, the Eastern Cape Fencing Association and the Matinyana Bursary Fund. JAM South Africa Early Inspiration, an Early Childhood Development organisation from Port Elizabeth, did a workshop in Port Alfred for leaders from disadvantaged township preschools in Port Alfred and Bathurst. The leaders were introduced to the JAM feeding programme that will help them to improve the health and growth of their children, who are often faced with malnutrition in their home environment.
