4 Message from the Competition Commission Chair Ladies and gentlemen, friends in sport, Mrs Alison Odell EUSA Honorary Member 6 EUG 2016 TECHNICAL HANDBOOK I am very happy and excited to welcome you to the 3rd edition of the European Universities Games here in the cities of Zagreb and Rijeka, Croatia. This edition is the biggest in the history of EUSA, with more than 5.7 participants taking part in 21 sports, with the introduction of two of them (Swimming and Table Tennis) for student athletes with disabilities. This is an important step forward in our sport program! EUSA and the Organising Committee have prepared the venues and sporting environment to the highest standards to allow you to excel in each and every one of your sporting competitions. Almost 9 university teams from 41 countries will be competing for gold. Although only a few will receive the medal, all the teams can be winners winners of through fair play, earning respect of their opponents, of the competition oicials on the ield of play and of the oicials and spectators present at the venues. EUSA strongly supports the Fair Play ideology, alongside competing free from doping! It is my sincere wish that we reach the end of the European Universities Games with 9 winning teams, all winners through Fair Play. Good luck! BADMINTON 7

5 Message from the OC Sports Director Dear participants and sports friends, Mrs Danira Bilic OC Sports Director 8 EUG 2016 TECHNICAL HANDBOOK On behalf of the EUG 2016 Committee for sport, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you to the 3rd European University Games held in Zagreb and Rijeka. We have been preparing and promoting these Games throughout the last two years in order to ensure the best conditions possible. It is my honor to be able to say that this year, for the irst time, we have included para sports in two disciplines, para table tennis and para swimming. In cooperation with OC Technical Delegates, we prepared the most important data about each sport in Zagreb and Rijeka as well as data about demonstrative sports and para sports. This Brochure contains all information you might need, so I hope you ind it useful. Under our motto Heart believes Mind achieves, I wish you success, fair play and especially lots of new friendships and memories. 6 Message from the EUSA Technical Delegate Badminton Message from the OC Technical Delegate Badminton Dear Badminton players, Dear Oicials and Volunteers, Isabelle Jobard Technical Delegate Badminton Eric Ligtvoet Assistant Technical Delegate Badminton EUG 2016 TECHNICAL HANDBOOK Badminton is an integral part of the EUSA sports program since 24 and ofers the only combined Men and Women`s Team Event. Since 24, ten European Universities Badminton Championships have been organized throughout Europe. In addition, Badminton being a compulsory sport within the sports program of the EUGames, this is in Croatia, the third edition of the EUGames Badminton Tournament. This is the irst time that the maximum number of 24 participating teams is reached and I am sure that you will all enjoy this event which is giving you the opportunity to meet and share experiences with players from 17 european countries. I hope to see many high quality matches played with fair play and showing good sportsmanship. I wish to all a very succesful Badminton tournament which will make the EUGames in Zagreb a memorable event for all participants. Good Luck! Dear students and athletes, Zeljko Miskulin First of all, I would like to welcome you and to wish you a nice stay in Zagreb. The Games will welcome more than 5.7 participants composing almost 9 teams, representing more than 4 European universities. In badminton there will be participating 22 teams. According to these facts these Games are the largest in terms of the number of sports disciplines and competitors. Zagreb is the capital and the largest city of the Republic of Croatia. Zagreb is the most important transport hub in Croatia where Central Europe, the Mediterranean and Southeast Europe meet, making the Zagreb area the centre of the road, rail and air networks of Croatia. It is a city known for its diverse economy, high quality of living, museums, sporting and entertainment events. The students will enjoy a full BADMINTON 11

7 Fair play program of social activities that will help them to get to know each other on a personal level and form friendships. The Games will prove once again the power of Sport in bringing together people from diferent nationalities and religions enable them all to spend quality time breaking down barriers. I would like to encourage students and boost their competitive and team spirit. Also I want to thank students and professors, after they return home, on promotion of Croatia and Zagreb and convey their impressions outside Croatia. 12 EUG 2016 TECHNICAL HANDBOOK Also I would like to use this opportunity to express our appreciation and pride of working all together. Thanks to mutual cooperation of member associations, universities, event organizers, athletes, volunteers, partner organizations and all EUSA friends, the European university sport is thriving. Once again I wish all the students and professors all the best, a lot of sports successes and fair play. Fair play is deeply embedded in the values of EUSA. The objective of promotion and encouragement of Fair Play is set already in the statutes of EUSA, as part of the core objectives of the organisation. Partnership with the European Fair Play Movement in 2013 proves this even more. Since 27, EUSA announces the best gesture of fair play in its sports event for the current year and awards the winners the special fair play recognition, Enno Harms Fair Play Award, named after the irst EUSA President, very much devoted to fair play. During each of the EUSA sporting event, the organisers, EUSA representatives and technical delegates pay special attention to the fair play gestures and attitude. At every sports event a part of the protocol is the oath of the athletes and oicials, which includes respecting fair-play. In some team sports, the athletes demonstrating fair play during the matches, following the rules and pursuing a clean game are awarded with a fair play recognition already during the event. The prestigious annual EUSA Enno Harms Fair Play Award, though, is awarded to the best example of fair play, for the individual s or team s mentality and actions which stand out the most. EUSA Executive Committee members on its last meeting in a year discuss the proposals received from all sporting events governed by EUSA in that year and select the team or individual to receive the annual fair play award which is formally handed to them at a special occasion usually at an EUSA Gala event. 8 Anti-Doping Policy Doping is not a guarantee of success in sport. In fact, its efect is usually the opposite. A lot of elite sportsmen and sportswomen who did doping got caught. As a result, they lost pride and were banned for at least 2 years from participating in a sport they loved and lived for. An even bigger problem of doping are the efects on the body. In elite sports, doping is deined as a violation of one or more anti-doping rules: 1 Presence of a prohibited substance in an athlete s sample 2 Use or attempted use of a prohibited substance or method 3 Refusing to submit sample collection after being notiied 4 Failure to ile athlete whereabouts information & missed tests 5 Tampering with any part of the doping control process 6 Possession of a prohibited substance or method 14 EUG 2016 TECHNICAL HANDBOOK 7 Traicking a prohibited substance or method 8 Administering or attempting to administer a prohibited substance or method to an athlete You can ind the list of prohibited substances and methods on the internet. It s updated every year by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and it s valid for every sport. You should check every substance you are taking. Athletes need to completely avoid steroids, erythropoietin (EPO), stimulants, human growth hormone (HGH), marijuana and narcotics, and pay special attention also to dietary or nutritional supplements. EUSA is active in Anti-Doping promotion, and has been a partner in the European Anti-Doping Initiative (EADI), project aimed at establishing an European-wide Anti-Doping mentality in the youth sector by establishing a moral tenor towards concepts such as Fair-play, sensitizing and raising awareness on all levels of the complex social environment surrounding the doping problematic and implementing strategies to motivate young people to pass on the message and create a strong multiplying efect. Also the International University Sport Federation (FISU) has been actively promoting sports without drugs, also on university sport level. EUSA is currently not enforcing doping tests at our events. In accordance with the national legislation of the host countries, however, doping controls may be implemented by the National Anti-Doping Agencies. If such doping tests are executed, the WADA rules and regulations are applicable to all athletes. Please remember that testing can be conducted in-competition and out-of-competition. If you are identiied in a Registered Testing Pool (RTP), you must provide current and accurate whereabouts information. What can you do to be an excellent sportsman or sportswoman? 9 About Badminton in Croatia Since the 50s Badminton in Croatia started several times, but until the early 90s, it remained on level of family entertainment and leisure. As the irst clubs in Zagreb, Osijek and Rijeka were founded, Croatian Badminton Association and Zagreb Badminton Association were established. Within these Associations regulated competitive badminton was developing, and now it is included in all major European and World competitions. Also Croatian Badminton Association was one of the founders of the Croatian Olympic Committee in After the initiators of badminton in Croatia ensured conditions for engagement of foreign coaches - from Ukraine, Denmark, China, Indonesia - the irst young players achieved success in the European Junior Cup (European Junior Circuit), and then among seniors. The greatest successes are the title winners at Mediterranean Games in 2013: men double Zvonimir Durkinjak / Zvonimir Hoelbling and title winners of Europe- 16 EUG 2016 TECHNICAL HANDBOOK Croatian Badminton Association now has 25 members and several hundred registered players. As a competitive sport in Croatia, badminton is very popular and organized as recreation, as oicial school sport, and as organized competitions for students. The main goal for already several generations of players is to achieve the irst Croatian appearance at the Olympic Games. an champion in 2014: competition younger juniors Maja Pavlinic and Katarina Galenic. An important outcome are two quarter inals for Croatian representatives at the irst European Games in 2015 at Baku - Durkinjak achieved this ranking in men single competition and Durkinjak/Hoelbling in men double competition. Each protest shall be accompanied by a deposit ifty (50) EUR. If the protest is upheld, the fee will be returned. The protests shall be submitted: Protests on referee decisions are not allowed, if it is not regulated diferently in the ESF/ISF Regulations of the respective sport.
