America s Mighty Warriors was founded by Debbie Lee after her son Marc was the first Navy SEAL to be killed in Iraq on August 2, In Marc s last letter home, he asked friends and family to pass on the love and kindness and precious gift of human life. Since then, America s Mighty Warriors has been working to support our troops, the fallen and their families. Warrior Dog Foundation is dedicated to serving the special operations community, families and Special Operation Forces working with K-9 military dogs. 3 Sturgis Rider Daily Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015 Page 3 5 Minutes with Mike Draper When Evel Knievel s Mack truck, Big Red, first transported the infamous daredevil to performances, only two men got behind the wheel of the custom rig. Mike Draper is one of them and he was there, up close, to witness both Evel s successes and his failures. SRD: How did you come to work for Evel? Mike Draper: I was working at Hugo s H-D in Wichita and Evel came to do a show. Hugo was a promoter and he had Evel come in to perform at the flat track races. Another guy at the shop, Lee Ratliff, started driving for Evel then and a few months later Lee got in touch to say they needed another driver and asked if I want to do it. So that s how I started. SRD: And you drove Big Red? MD: Yeah, the truck was pretty new then, it was around The first event I drove to Evel crashed in practice and hurt his back so bad he had to hire Wicked Ward to do the jump for him. That was the only time another jumper performed for him. Evel had to perform the next weekend but he wasn t even close to healed so he put a brace on under his leathers. He did the jump and it was a success but back in the coach he was really sweating, you could tell there was a lot of pain. SRD: Does a particularly memorable trip come to mind? MD: When Evel was in the Macy s Thanksgiving Day Parade we hauled the motorcycles out to New York all the way from California just so he could perform for maybe five minutes. They put us up at the Plaza hotel and we couldn t believe it. We were used to the Motel 6 when Evel was paying. SRD: What was so special about the truck? MD: Big Red was top of the line in the 70s and it was an automatic. We d get to truck stops and other drivers would all come to look, it was so unusual. SRD: That wasn t typical? MD: It was the first automatic Mack. See, Evel had hurt his hip in the Caesar s Palace crash and working a clutch was difficult for him, so the truck was customized as an automatic. When I started driving it I kept going for the clutch with my left foot till I got used to it. But it wasn t a performance truck, it was a 6 not an 8. Evel didn t want anyone hot-rodding it. SRD: Did you have other responsibilities? MD: We were concerned with his safety and making sure the motorcycles worked right. Our job was to make him look as good as we could. But I learned early on, you couldn t get headstrong with Evel. You had to make sure everything was his idea. SRD: Did he ever let his guard down? MD: On his own he was pretty relaxed. But when people were around he was back to his EK persona, talking about his boats and how much money he spent on things. But that persona sold tickets! He used to tell us, You guys stick with me and you ll never have to work again! SRD: Was Evel a good boss? MD: He always told us, There s a right way, a wrong way, and a Knievel way. As long as you work for me it s the Knievel way. If something screws up but you did everything I told you to do, it s back on me. So that s a pretty good boss. SRD: Why do you think Evel had such an impact? MD: Those were turbulent times with the Vietnam War and things changing so much. People had to have a hero and at the time he was the guy with the biggest jock strap.

Let s meet them: expert welder, Everett Brashear was one of the top AMA dirt track racers in the 1950s. He made history when he won the first AMA National held in Sturgis in August of That win, aboard Harley-Davidson s new KR model, provided significant bragging rights for the Motor Company and netted considerable publicity for Sturgis. Brashear went on to win more Nationals until he was sidelined by injury in Sugar Bear opened his own shop in South Central Los Angeles in 1971 and since that time he has been hand-building his signature chopper front ends; that s over 40 years! His love affair with choppers started when he passed a couple riding one on the freeway and despite not knowing how to ride he went out and bought a bike, which he promptly chopped, of course. A natural born teacher, he mentors young people and supports effort to encourage next gen riders and builders. mechanic, tuner and undaunted race competitor. A well-respected Harley-Davidson dealer, he opened his first shop in Statesville, North Carolina in 1972 and a second in Salisbury, NC, in No one rode more than Don Tilley; a thousand mile day was run of the mill to him. Sadly, Don was killed last year in a motorcycle accident. His wife, son and daughters continue his legacy at the dealerships. Eddie Trotta has been building custom choppers and baggers at his shop in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, since the late 80s. A speedboat racer and piano virtuoso as well, he also supports community organization such as the Boys & Girls Clubs. He is the founder and owner of Thunder Cycle Designs, which focuses on imagination, craftsmanship and attention to detail in every motorcycle build. Chris McIntyre is the co-founder of EagleRider, the world leader in providing a full range of motorcycle experiences, including rentals, tours, bike sales and service, parts and apparel. Chris and his partners opened the first EagleRider in Los Angeles in 1994 with a fleet of 4 Harley- Davidsons. The company has since grown to over 100 locations worldwide employing over 400 people and delivering dreams for more than 100,000 riders annually. Sturgis Rider Daily Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015 One of the first to recognize the value of customizing a touring bike, John Shope has become a designer and producer of quality custom motorcycles, and a parts supplier to the industry. His company, Dirty Bird Concepts has been featured in numerous magazines and TV shows, including last year s Biker Battleground on the History channel. John has mentored student build teams at Sturgis Brown High School. For 2015, the J.C. Pappy Hoel Outstanding Achievement Award goes to Chief Jim Bush of the Sturgis Police Department. Bush joined the Sturgis Police Reserves in 1978, was hired as a full time officer in 1979 and worked his way up through the ranks. Serving as the Chief of Police in Sturgis since 1990, Chief Bush has worked tirelessly to make the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally a success for visitors and locals alike. Richard Lester is the Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame inductee for Since 1982 he has founded five nationwide organizations focused mainly on uniting, educating and informing motorcyclists of their rights. These include including Aid to Injured Motorcyclists and National Coalition of Motorcyclists. DAILY LEGAL TIP By Chuck Koro Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys SAVE YOUR DAMAGED GEAR When a motorcyclist is injured by a negligent driver, insurance companies will sometimes deny that the rider s injury was caused by the accident. One client was rear-ended and thrown over his handlebars, slamming and scraping both elbows in the process. A month later, the rider was diagnosed with ulnar nerve damage and required surgery. Subsequently, the same procedure had to be done to the other elbow. The offending driver s adjuster claimed that the elbow injuries were unrelated to the accident. Although the motorcyclist was advised to keep all his gear, he disposed of his leather jacket. It had been ripped at both elbows--evidence connecting the elbow injuries to the accident. Ultimately, a witness confirmed that, at the scene, he noticed that the elbows of the jacket were torn. A shop salesman, who the rider had asked about having the jacket repaired, also confirmed the tears. Your damaged property can be crucial evidence, as well as a reimbursable expense. Inspired by the living image of an eagle formed by soldiers and nurses in 1918, this mega montage of bodies and bikes will be arranged by performance artist John Quigley to form a soaring eagle. This singular event is presented by Black Hills Clean Water Alliance, the Chip, and SpectralQ to celebrate the Sturgis 75th, recognize the freedoms we enjoy in America, and honor the active military and veterans who keep them secure. Army veteran and Deadwood, SD, native Brent Stott completed two tours in Afghanistan before coming back to the States and starting college on the G.I. Bill in North Carolina. And it s that part the motorcycle riding that s the nugget of this. It s the love of riding motorcycles that brings us together here, time after time. So make sure you explore this spectacular area and enjoy all it has to offer. Then come home to your campsite and park the bike for the night. Take a deep breath to recount the day, bench race a bit and decompress with a few drinks. And that s part of the beauty of camping at The Best Party Anywhere when the party starts, you re already home. Let s face it: it can be risky riding with this much traffic. It s just plain dangerous to add other variables into the mix. A pioneer female rider, Gloria was honored on her 90th birthday at Biker Belles. That s 90 years old and, yes, she rode to Sturgis again this year from her home in Clifton, New Jersey.
