1 Jacksonville, Fl. - IMBBA has moved into Sturgis Rally mode getting everything ready for the events. This year the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is celebrating the 72nd annual event founded by the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle club. Since then, every year gets bigger and better is no different! IMBBA in partnership with AMD will hold its first IMBBA International Qualifier Class Bike Competition. IMBBA in partnership with AMD brings a competition two years in the making where IMBBA builders were challenged to build their best work in secrecy so this competition would be the very first viewing of these works of art. The quantity of entries will be limited in this class, but the quality of those entries is expected to be outstanding. IMBBA judges will be there assist AMD with the Bike Show Completion and Awards. In the Qualifier Class, Canada, USA and Italy will be represented. These bikes will have the distinction of dual competition as they are registered competitors for the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building Freestyle Class as well. The Qualifier Class will be judged under IMBBA guidelines, have separate awards, prizes, IMBBA points, etc. It truly is a show within a show. 2 IMBBA website will be undergoing a major face lift to include YouTube, links to builder s websites with supporting articles of the builders that the IMBBA has awarded their Lifetime Achievement Award. This renovation comes as we simultaneously complete the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum s Virtual Hall of Fame Website. An endeavor fully funded and produced by the IMBBA. IMBBA President Jeff Starke has been personally been working feverishly with the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum along with numerous industry associates to gather all the historic / significant information. These items include photos, articles, and general data about those who have contributed so much to our history, culture, and riding experience and are Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame Members. Obtaining some of this information to create a complete file on the early pioneers is not an easy task. As you will know once you examine the inductee list, it is not always world famous celebrities that have the great positive impact on the sport, but the regular men and women that live the lifestyle everyday of their life to make a difference. If anyone has ANY information on any current Sturgis Hall of Fame Members that you feel we might not have, please forward that information to jeff@imbba.com. The IMBBA (website) Hall of Fame is now defined by all inductee s are awarded a Life time achievement award after producing evidence of their contributions back to the industry. These contributions come in the forms of products the individual may have created, manufactured, designed parts or technological advances that had a positive impact on the industry. Builders also obtain points for benevolence - sponsorships out of pocket without expectations of financial gain to produce riding events, support schools / students, and charities in the PowerSport business. However, money isn t the only resource.mentoring young mechanics that have remained in the industry, making themselves available for seminars and personal visits all counts toward the ultimate goal of The IMBBA Lifetime Achievement Award. Once the builder has accumulated enough points leading to the Lifetime achievement Award is an automatic induction in the IMBBA Hall of Fame. IMBBA has now partnered with Sturgis Motorcycle Museum to share this information and recognize the individuals from 1900 to present and now beyond. Since many of Sturgis Hall of Fame members are equally recognized by IMBBA it only makes sense to provide complete historic records, video, articles, pictures of these wonderful, colorful, brilliant, charitable, and talented builders that have left a mark on the industry. 3 Jacksonville, Florida - IMBBA announced that the Motorcycle Appraisers Course is now available to be taken and tested on line. Miles Brown, IMBBA s Director of Motorcycle Appraisals is now completed the extensive course over 168 pages and documents that walk you through the education and training needed to secure a certification for appraising motorcycles. Contact Miles Brown: mb@masterbikebuilders.com Miles, is setting up a network of certified Motorcycle Appraisers to handle the demand for accurate valuation of motorcycles. With a network of comparables to research when writing appraisals. This is an excellent opportunity for professionally trained and IMBBA certified individuals to step up and share your experience and ensure the riders/owners get the proper evaluation for insurance purposes and their peace of mind. Lawmakers and insurance agencies need this industries knowledge and experience base to properly appraise motorcycles. Builders know better the labor time and accessory costs associated when an owner applies these parts to their ride and deserve an intelligent and professional scoring and value. IMBBA has worked several years to develop the profession within. It is now the industry professionals to make it better and a reality we can be proud of. Once completed and a member of IMBBA, one can begin professionally writing appraisals. 4 IMBBA members that have completed their certification worksheets have a responsibility to themselves to communicate with IMBBA International and submit the records so we can maintain an accurate portfolio. Several builders that have completed their worksheets have received back from IMBBA with their worksheets marked with requests for documentation. If you are not 100% clear on your status at this point, please contact Jeff Starke to clarification. Nothing will be done until IMBBA receives the requested documents to credit points for a certification. While you may have joined as a member and submitted your Certify Me worksheet, you must follow up to insure proper credit for those points associated with your worksheet. IMBBA must have documented proof of experience, education, and training before the certification process is complete. To streamline the process, when submitting your Certify Me worksheet, send images (jpegs) to jeff@imbba.com of your shop and equipment (more detail the better), bikes, articles of your builds, and any other items / information you feel could be pertinent in the certification process. This would be very helpful. 8 When having your bike judged by any competition, while a photo album or video is added to your display or you open up areas for spectators to see while in a bike competition. Keep in mind these important thoughts. If you remove the seat or expose an area the judges normally would not be seen, could lose or gain additional points? Is the paint, coatings and or details of this exposed area finished to the level of detail necessary to obtain points? If the answer is yes, then you re good to go. If not, keep the seat on the bike and go back to the drawing board when you get home. In other words, because the paint looks cool, perhaps the wiring is not up to standards, or not properly prepared under IMBBA s Fit, Form, Function or Safety Guidelines. Generally speaking, if an area is not exposed to the naked eye, it won t lose points. However, if shown, the detail must be impeccable. Any bolt holes not used, wires routed improperly, painted surfaces not the same quality on the inside as out, decorate hose clamps not used in the inner workings. All these have a value factor when judging to determine which of the bikes in the class/show are built the best. REMEMBER, too much information can be a BAD THING! Custom displays such as turn tables or bikes elevated in a way that blocks the normal access a judge usually has to a vehicle can be a possible point grabber especially if you are not around to answer questions about the bike. The bottom line is simple..detail is the name of the game! IMBBA wishes to seek the advice and comments of the industry, members, builders, mechanics, customizers, racers and the like who feel a need to voice their opinion, concerns and questions of, or about, the IMBBA, it s goals, missions and direction. 12 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE As we see Sturgis Bike Rally and beyond. IMBBA realizes that the economic uncertainty that is still along the road for many builders has disabled what once was an itinerary of bike shows and events per year that contributed to their success. Business income, is now financially suppressed. I would like to encourage those that are now recovering and see some light at the end of the tunnel. To turn towards our industry and begin the networking and any education and training necessary for a certification. Soon, the certifications will be a necessary evil with laws and law makers that rally to reduce our abilities to enjoy our passions of bike building. IMBBA is poised and ready to work with the builders to sort through their life experiences and determine the level of knowledge and proficiency and practices that lead to a point system and ultimate certification. IMBBA truly believes that strength in numbers and builders embracing a standard, not only, for bike show judging guidelines as well as embracing the true and right way to build a bike under the most important values of Fit, Form, Function, and safety. Please take the time to know the builders who already have received their certifications, they will tell you it is a task to document their knowledge and training, but that s what the certificate applies to, Thus riders, enthusiasts and the like can appreciate and with confidence knowing the IMBBA badge is a badge of honor and points to the consumer who has the real knowledge and abilities to perform work, customization. Performance and or restorations upon their motorcycles. Rather than the builders self proclamation. Having a third party certify your talents, skills education and training is a must. IMBBA has been working to combining the value of certifications and tracking the performances of its members that ultimately may lead to a lifetime achievement Award and induction into the Hall of Fame. 13 GETTING CERTIFIED? What is meaning of IMBBA certification? While a certificate / piece of paper, a sewn badge, and rocker are cool, it is nothing compared to the knowledge and ability the person that holds and possesses these items. IMBBA, through its sponsors, builders, promoters and all who elect to use a professionally trained judging staff at their shows are now considered the yardstick by which all others are measured. IMBBA uses this opportunity to judge the bike on its merits and award points. The competitor faces a professional group of experienced builders / judges where the bike judged based on the evidence of Fit Form, Function and Safety. Only IMBBA Certified Judges are qualified to make the call! IMBBA begins the certification process by placing all builders, mechanics, fabricators, engineers and the like in the proper level based on current levels of education, training, ability, and general practices of the trade as recognized by IMBBA. From there, we awards points for degrees of certification, and points for other industry awarded accomplishments. The amount of time in the industry is also a major consideration, but once certified, potential employers and customers are ensured that a third party unbiased has looked at your work, education, training, experience, and time in the business and certified the individual as such. This creates THE global standard by which we all can be recognized. IMBBA certifications are now in 13 countries and growing. 14 Jimmy Tordorovitch Is preparing his best work as a IMBBA/AMD International Qualifier competitor with the project funded by Sam Baldi owner of the bike. It is to be unveiled at the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building as part of the IMBBA Qualifier Class The competition for this class was to be built in secrecy and shown for the first time in Sturgis at the Sturgis Bike Rally AMD show. August 5-8 th Sam excited to say the least! Sam, whose builder won them the right to compete in this prestigious competition last year at the Broken Spoke IMBBA Bike Show has once again turned to Jimmy to create and build the next possible winner for this competition. GARY BANG Hall of Fame Inductee Gary Bang is credited with creating the first motorcycle aftermarket catalogue but his love of motorcycling began in 1948 when his dad bought him a Cushman motor scooter. By 1954 he was working parts at Kolbe Cycle in Reseda, California and in 65 he began traveling as a road rep for MC Supply. He traveled for a few years learning everything there was to know about the industry. Gary discovered that California was way behind the Midwest in the custom business. Many of the bikes on the floors of those Midwest shops were customized, so in 1967 he found a 1,200 square foot building in Canoga Park, Ca. where his first retail shop was opened. He sold parts for Triumphs and other popular motorcycle brands, specializing in spokes and custom wheel building. In the early 1970 s Gary noticed that the majority of young Harley riders were into chopping and customizing their motorcycles. There was nowhere for these guys to find the product so Gary decided to give them what they wanted. He took out an ad in Big Bike magazine letting everyone know that they could order a Gary Bang Parts catalogue for $1.00. The people finally had a company that had what she or he needed. And if Gary didn t have it, he knew where to find it, or have it made.
