1 VOL. 8 October 2016 NO. 4 Maile and Zimmer Team Up for Salt Attack After much anticipation over the last two and a half years, September 2017 saw the Bonneville Salt Flats dry out enough to resume the traditional Bonneville Speed Record Runs. That anticipation was also in play as Wolverines Jeff Maile and Lynn Zimmer make final adjustments and put the finishing touches on a scratch built machine to compete on the salt runway. Starting with a surplus Harley Davidson frame, adding a highly modified Harley Davidson WL 750 cubic inch flat head motor in front of a modified Triumph transmission, roll it on some Triumph wheels and you have maximized your chances to challange a class speed record on the salt flats. The rule book is thick with do s and don ts for operator safety and preservation of the racing surface, so preparation for a Bonneville speed run is both complicated and challenging. Jeff and Lynn can be proud of their accomplishment just to get there and compete. See page 6 for more pictures and editors comentary. AMCA MOTTO: RIDE EM - DON T HIDE EM
2 Election of officers for the year 2017 were held during the September membership meeting with the results shown on page 3. NATIONAL NEWS The AMCA National Board of Directors has announced the cancellation of the continuation of the Barber National The 2016 event was reported a success at drawing a solid field of vendors, but public attendance was dismal, for what ever reasons. Wolverines Scott denny and Jeff Maile were in attendance for 2016, but only 5 vendors made a committment for a posible 2017 event. The event is considered dead. John s dry, but keen, sense of humor endeared him to all who came to know him. A long time member of the Grand Rapids area Road Weasels vintage motorcycle group, John had accumulated an impressive collection of his own. Family, friends, and acquaintenses packed the Pederson Funeral Home in Grand Rapids on August 24th to say goodby to John with full military honors by the Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy. God speed, John, may you rest in peace. Thank you, Secretary Barb Engelter 2016 Centreville Swap Information Retraction The July issue of your Wolverine Tales newsletter reported the 2016 Wolverine Centreville Swap Meet and Vintage Show as the most successful ever. Turns out records show that the 2010 inaugural event was the most successful of all, with 2016 being in second place for attendance and revenue. It appears that some outside forces affect our show from year to year. AUBREE S PLAINWELL 618 Allegan St, Plainwell, MI
6 Jeff & Lynn Make a Go at the Bonneville Salt Flats We made it to the salt. It s hot, windy, the salt is soft, it s getting in my nose. This is going to be fun. We ve enlisted help from Las Vegas. Jeff s son Bo came up to help out with muscle and speed advice. The competion lurks. Sure hope he s in a different class. That thing looks fast. The crew prepares the machine while Jeff rests up for his first assult on the salt. Man, that looks like a long way down there. You sure I ve got enough gas? That was fun. My nose burns, I m sun burned to a crisp, I m dog tired, and it s a long way home. Can t wait til next year. Wolverines Jeff Maile and Lynn Zimmer hand built a Harley Davidson Flat Head powered purpose built motorcycle for a shot at the speed record in their class. Although they fell short of the record, the experience lends hope for a better run when the salt dries up again Good work, Guys.
7 Some Motorcycle History That Never Happened In 1968 Publisher / Entreprenuer Floyd Clymer teamed with the German manufacturer of the Munch Mammoth motorcycle to prototype and promote his newly acquired Indian brand. There is no record of Clymers actually buying the Indian name and the venture shown above does not appear in the Wikapedia history of Indian motorcycles

12 Member Bikes In the late summer of 2013, we bought a 52 Harley 125 from fellow Wolverine John Buursma, who sadly passed away 8/16/16. The bike was almost all there, so it appeared that the restoration process would be a short one. Over the fall and winter it was disassembled and parts counting. While the sheet metal only needed buffing out, the frame and small parts required paint to remove traces of a former owners gold rattle can. We did have to have the rims chromed and the spokes zinced to get some shiny parts. After new wiring it was ready for its first showing at the Wolverine Perry Harley Davidson show. The bike collected a co-first and the promoters choice award. In memory of our friend John, the bike carries the name Ogre.
