1 2008 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS ADDITIONAL STATISTICS THROUGH GAME 11

2 GAME 1 Patriots 17, Chiefs 10 September 7, 2008 Gillette Stadium 68,756 KANSAS CITY NEW ENGLAND It was a game where both starting quarterbacks suffered game-ending injuries, the defenses seemed in more control of the outcome than the offenses and where New England was able to score one more touchdown than the Chiefs. Ultimately, that was the difference as the Patriots grabbed a victory at Gillette Stadium. In the first quarter, the Chiefs defense was very active, forcing a pair of New England fumbles. The Patriots won the opening coin toss and QB Tom Brady drove them five plays before the Chiefs defense stopped them on a third down and New England was forced to punt. CB Brandon Flowers ran into P Chris Hanson and the five-yard penalty gave the Patriots a first down. But three plays later, WR Wes Welker caught a pass and the ball was punched out by CB Patrick Surtain, recovered by S Jarrad Page and the Chiefs had possession at their own 40-yard line. On their next offensive series, the Patriots were moving the ball when Brady completed a pass to WR Randy Moss. The ball came loose and was recovered by CB Brandon Carr. New England suffered an even bigger loss as Brady was hit on the left knee by blitzing S Bernard Pollard. When the Patriots offense came back on the field, they were directed by fourth-year QB Matt Cassel. Two runs by RB Sammy Morris produced minus-one yard as the Chiefs had the Patriots backed up, but then on third down from their own one-yard line, Cassel hit Moss for a 51-yard gain to get New England out of a field position hole as the first quarter ended. Later in that possession, on a third down-and-eight play at the Chiefs 10-yard line, Cassel found Moss at the back of the end zone as he caught his 125th career TD pass for a 7-0 lead. Late in the second quarter, the Chiefs got a drive going, as they converted a trio of third down plays. The big play in the possession was a 20-yard completion from QB Brodie Croyle to TE Tony Gonzalez. But the drive bogged down and K Nick Novak nailed a 40-yard FG for a 7-3 at halftime score. Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle suffered a right shoulder injury on the first drive of the second half when he was sacked by LB Adalius Thomas and did not return to the game. The Patriots then took over at their own 20-yard line and marched 80 yards in 11 plays, using 6:14 of the third-quarter clock. A five-yard run by RB Sammy Morris gave New England a 14-3 lead. The Chiefs offense came back on the field with QB Damon Huard under center and moved down the field in their best possession of the game, going 10 plays and 63 yards and finishing up with a Huard to WR Dwayne Bowe 13-yard TD pass to make the score A 37-yard FG by New England K Stephen Gostkowski capped a 10-play, 34-yard drive and gave the Patriots a seven-point lead with less than 2:30 to play. The Chiefs took over at their own 22-yard line and hit their biggest play of the game, as Huard connected with WR Devard Darling for a 68-yard play. Darling was tackled on the New England five-yard line. The Chiefs had four plays to score, but three Huard passes fell incomplete and a Johnson run went for no gain as the Patriots narrowly escaped with a narrow victory. GAME NOTES Kansas City started six rookies on Opening Day for the first time since the AFL-NFL merger. LB Donnie Edwards had a streak of 153 starts snapped when the Chiefs opened in a nickel defense. 3 GAME 2 Raiders 23, Chiefs 8 September 14, 2008 Arrowhead Stadium 74,480 OAKLAND KANSAS CITY Too little offense, too late sunk the Chiefs in their rivalry battle with the Raiders, as they suffered a 23-8 loss at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs offense struggled through the game s first three quarters and was unable to consistently stay on the field as the Oakland defense shut down the running game, allowing only 55 yards. Defensively, the Chiefs struggled to control the Raiders running game, giving up 300 yards on the ground. The Chiefs offense had the ball first and put together 10 snaps in their opening possession, including a pair of first downs. On several plays in the possession, QB Damon Huard left the field and WR Marques Hagans took the direct snap at the quarterback position for a pair of running plays. Ultimately, the drive stalled and a P Dustin Colquitt punt set up the Raiders at their own 41-yard line. In five plays Oakland had moved into Chiefs territory, but settled for a 56-yard FG by K Sebastian Janikowski for an early 3-0 lead. It was the longest field goal by an opponent against the Chiefs in franchise history. When the Chiefs got the ball back, a Huard pass was tipped and picked off by Oakland S Tyvon Branch who returned the interception 36 yards to the Chiefs nine-yard line, setting up a 25- yard Janikowski FG to push the Oakland lead to 6-0. The second quarter was controlled by the defenses. Combined, the Chiefs and Raiders produced 85 yards in total offense on 26 plays over the first 15 minutes of play. The Chiefs made a change at quarterback on their last possession of the first quarter as QB Tyler Thigpen replaced Huard, who suffered a mild head trauma. The Raiders retained a 6-0 halftime advantage. The game s first touchdown came on Oakland s second possession of the third quarter. Starting at its five-yard line, Oakland rode the strong legs of the rookie RB Darren McFadden. He produced runs for 21 and 50 yards runs before a 19-yard TD run. The scoring drive went seven plays for 95 yards and gave Oakland a 13-0 lead with just over eight minutes to play in the period. Midway through the fourth quarter, the Raiders added another Janikowski FG, this one from 40 yards and a 16-0 lead. That s when the Chiefs put together their only scoring drive of the game. Starting at his own 20-yard line, Thigpen moved the team down the field, starting with a 30-yard completion to WR Dwayne Bowe on first down. The Chiefs then got a big third down conversion on a 10-yard completion from Thigpen to WR Devard Darling. The touchdown came on a third-and-goal play at the Raiders two-yard line as Thigpen found TE Tony Gonzalez in the end zone. On the two-point play, Thigpen ran a bootleg right and threw to FB Mike Cox to make the score 16-8 in favor of the Raiders, keeping hope alive for Kansas City. The Chiefs defense came back and forced a turnover, as Bush fumbled on a hit by S Jarrad Page and S Bernard Pollard recovered his second loose ball of the day. Thigpen moved the offense into Raiders territory, but threw an interception to LB Kirk Morrison that ended the Chiefs hopes of a comeback. The Raiders added a late touchdown as Bush scored on a 32- yard run that ended a six-play, 58-yard drive. Janikowski s PAT kick gave Oakland its final 23-8 margin. GAME NOTES Raiders K Sebastian Janikowski hit a 56-yard FG, the longest by an opponent in Chiefs history. OAK Janikowski, 56-yard field goal (6-22, 3:50). 4 GAME 3 Falcons 38, Chiefs 14 September 21, 2008 Georgia Dome 62,434 KANSAS CITY ATLANTA It proved to be an unfruitful visit to the Georgia Dome for the Chiefs, as they suffered their third loss of the season by a count to the Atlanta Falcons. The Chiefs fell behind early and eventually cut Atlanta s lead to 10 points in the second half, but could never close the gap to make it a one-score game. The game began as a battle of punters, as Chiefs P Dustin Colquitt and P Michael Koenen of the Falcons were very busy, punting three times each as both offenses went three-and-out on their initial three possessions. But the Falcons finally got things moving on offense. Backed up to their own eight-yard line, RB Michael Turner broke free over the left side for a 38-yard run. Two plays later, RB Jerious Norwood caught a pass from QB Matt Ryan and turned it into a 30-yard gain. Then two plays after that, Turner plowed into the center of the line from four yards out for the game s first touchdown and a 7-0 Atlanta lead. Ryan hit WR Roddy White for a 70-yard TD pass on the Falcons next possession, extending the Falcons lead to 14-0 as the first quarter ended. After another KC punt, QB Tyler Thigpen overthrew TE Tony Gonzalez and Atlanta S Erik Coleman picked off the pass, setting up the Falcons at the Chiefs 18-yard line. The Kansas City defense limited Atlanta to a 27-yard FG by K Jason Elam. On their next possession, the Chiefs moved to ball into Atlanta territory for the first time. But Thigpen threw his second INT of the quarter, to CB Brent Grimes, who returned the ball to the Chiefs 40-yard line. Turner s one-yard TD run capped the 10-play drive for a commanding 24-0 lead. The Chiefs most productive possession of the first half came at the end of the period, when they moved 74 yards on 13 plays running out of the two-minute offense. They converted a trio of third down plays and reached the end zone on a 15-yard pass from Thigpen to WR Dwayne Bowe on a third-and-seven play with just three seconds left in the half. K Nick Novak s PAT kick made the score 24-7 at intermission. The Chiefs offense came flying out of the locker room and moved right down the field on the broad shoulders of RB Larry Johnson, who got it all started with a 48-yard run on the first offensive play of the second half, his longest run since rattling off a 54-yard jaunt at Oakland (10/21/07). Johnson carried seven more times in the drive for 22 yards. A big third-down conversion came on a 12-yard pass from Thigpen to Charles that gave the Chiefs first-and-goal at the Falcons six-yard line. Two plays later, Johnson banged it in over the middle from the one and Novak s PAT kick cut the Falcons lead to The Falcons came right back with their own scoring drive. They started with a 36-yard kick return from Norwood that gave the offensive possession at the Atlanta 40-yard line. Eight plays and 60 yards later, Turner scored on a two-yard run, his third TD run of the game. Elam s PAT kick gave the Falcons a lead. Atlanta added a late TD on a 10-yard interception return by CB Chris Houston for a final score. 5 GAME 4 Chiefs 33, Broncos 19 September 28, 2008 Arrowhead Stadium 74,623 DENVER KANSAS CITY With strong running from RB Larry Johnson and a defensive effort that forced four turnovers the Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium. The victory ended a 12-game losing streak that stretched back to November of The Chiefs took the opening kickoff and moved down for a 23- yard FG from K Nick Novak that ended a nine-play, 94-yard drive. The key play was a career-long 65-yard run by Johnson on the second offensive snap of the game. The Kansas City defense took the field and forced a fumble at the end of a pass play from Cutler to WR Eddie Royal. DE Turk McBride knocked the ball out and it was recovered by Carr, who returned the fumble 17 yards to the Broncos 26-yard line. KC settled for a 21-yard Novak field goal and the Chiefs lead was 6-0. Early in the second quarter, the Broncos took over at their own 38-yard line. Cutler moved the team into scoring position and hit WR Brandon Marshall who made a leaping catch at the back of the end zone to give Denver a 7-6 second-quarter lead. The defense got the Chiefs back on the scoreboard. The Broncos had Marshall come out of the backfield on a running play and LB Derrick Johnson came quickly in run support and ripped the ball from Marshall s hands. The fumble was recovered by CB Brandon Flowers who returned it 37 yards and was tackled just short of the end zone. Johnson plowed in from one yard out for his 52nd career rushing TD as the Chiefs took a 13-7 lead. Denver drove right back down the field, hitting a handful of big plays before the Chiefs defense slowed their pace, forcing a field goal try, but K Matt Prater missed a 28-yard FG wide right. Prater got a chance to redeem himself just before the half came to an end, when he nailed a 56-yard FG with 0:11 remaining to cut the Chiefs lead to at intermission. The Broncos took the second-half kickoff and moved 32 yards, resulting in a 51-yard Prater field goal to tie the score at with 12:13 remaining in the period. After a nice 35-yard kickoff return from RB Jamaal Charles, the Chiefs started at their own 37-yard line and Johnson immediately ripped off a 17-yard run on first down. That run put Johnson over 100 yards for the game, marking the 29th time he passed the century mark in his career. However, the drive stalled after one more first down and Novak came in and kicked a 43-yard FG to give the Chiefs a lead. Near the end of the third quarter, the Chiefs put together a 10- play, 73-yard drive that found TE Tony Gonzalez open in the end zone for a 10-yard score that extended the Chiefs led to It was the 68th TD catch of Gonzalez s career. Denver answered with a 22-yard Prater FG and the Broncos trailed The Chiefs answered right back, thanks to a 51-yard kickoff return by RB Dantrell Savage to the Denver 49-yard line. Kansas City ran off more than four minutes before a 33-yard FG by Novak that pushed the difference back to 10 points at Denver added another Prater FG, but the Chiefs recovered the Broncos onside kick attempt and drove down the field on the legs of Johnson. He cracked off a 34-yard run and finished it up with a 16-yard TD jaunt to secure the victory. 6 GAME 5 Panthers 34, Chiefs 0 October 5, 2008 Bank of America Stadium 72,319 KANSAS CITY CAROLINA The Kansas City offense managed just 127 total yards in a 34-0 loss at Carolina. Carolina RB DeAngelo Williams, finished with 123 rushing yards, 25 receiving yards and a trio of touchdowns for a Panthers offense that ended the day with 441 total yards. After both clubs exchanged punts, Carolina got the ball on the Chiefs 46-yard line and QB Jake Delhomme drove the offense in seven plays to a touchdown. Most of the damage was done on the ground with the duo of Williams and rookie RB Jonathan Stewart. Williams went 10 yards up the middle untouched for the Carolina TD, giving the Panthers a 7-0 lead with 5:10 to play in the first quarter. When the Chiefs got the ball back, they were unable to manage a first down. But, on a third down-and-16 yards to go play, Huard hooked up with TE Tony Gonzalez for a six-yard gain. That play gave Gonzalez the career receiving yardage record for tight ends in NFL history, surpassing TE Shannon Sharpe (10,060). At the end of the first quarter the Panthers offense began a nice drive, reaching the Chiefs 15-yard line. But Stewart fumbled on a run over the right side when he was hit by DT Glenn Dorsey. The ball was recovered by DT Tank Tyler. However, KC s offense could not convert. Carolina again went on a drive into Kansas City territory. The big play was a 38-yard catch and run from Delhomme to WR Steve Smith. Six plays later, Delhomme dropped a short pass to the right side to Williams, who was not covered by a blitzing Chiefs defense. He ran 26 yards for his second TD of the game. After Kansas City s offense again couldn t sustain a drive, Delhomme marched his club down the field, chewing up 6:07 of the second quarter clock on an 11-play drive. It ended with another Williams TD, this one a 32-yard run on a draw play, for a 21-0 lead at halftime. The Chiefs offense got the ball first in the third quarter, but turned the ball over on their first snap when Carolina DE Julius Peppers knocked the ball out of QB Damon Huard s hands at the Kansas City 28-yard line. On a third-and-goal play from the Chiefs five-yard line, S Jarrad Page picked off a Delhomme pass intended for Smith. The officials on the field ruled that Page did not get both feet in bounds on the catch, but the Chiefs challenged and an instant replay review overturned the call and gave Kansas City possession. However, the Chiefs were picked off on their very next play as Carolina LB Jon Beason stepped in front of a Huard pass. Kasay then kicked a 32-yard field goal to give the Panthers a 24-0 lead. That lead grew by seven points thanks to another Kansas City turnover. CB Ken Lucas logged the interception and returned it 43 yards. Three plays later, Delhomme hit WR Muhsin Muhammad for a 47-yard TD pass that made the score 31-0 as the third quarter came to an end. Early in the fourth quarter, Kasay added a 43-yard FG to make the final score GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez surpassed TE Shannon Sharpe (10,060) for the most receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history. Gonzalez now owns more receptions (841), receiving yards (10,075) and TD receptions (68) than any other tight end in NFL history. CAR D. Williams, 10-yard run (Kasay kick) (7-46, 3:41). CAR D. 7 GAME 6 Titans 34, Chiefs 10 October 19, 2008 Arrowhead Stadium 74,200 TENNESSEE KANSAS CITY Unable to generate a consistent offensive attack, the Chiefs were beaten by the Tennessee Titans at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City was unable to mount any consistent scoring threat under three different quarterbacks. QB Brodie Croyle started, but left early in the second quarter with a left knee injury. QB Damon Huard relieved into the fourth quarter after suffering a right thumb injury at the end of the first half. He was replaced by QB Tyler Thigpen, who finished out the game and led the team to a pair of scoring drives. It was a different story for Tennessee, as the Titans produced 455 offensive yards and 332 rushing yards. There were three touchdown runs by RB LenDale White, including an 80-yard scoring run, and a 66 yard TD jaunt by rookie RB Chris Johnson. The Titans struck first, taking possession at the Chiefs 20-yard line after a Kansas City punt. QB Kerry Collins drove Tennessee s offense 49 yards on 10 plays, but had to settle for a 49-yard FG from K Rob Bironas to give the Titans an early 3-0 lead. Tennessee later added to its lead on a six-play, 53-yard drive with White scoring on a six-yard run to make it 10-0 for the Titans. As the second quarter began, the Chiefs offense finally started moving the football and pushed it to the Titans 21-yard line on a 17-yard completion from Croyle to WR Dwayne Bowe on third down. Unfortunately on the play, Croyle suffered a season-ending left knee injury. K Nick Novak tried a 39-yard field goal that sailed over the left upright but was ruled no good by the game officials. Tennessee went three-and-out on its next possession. Huard came in to run the offense and immediately the Chiefs got a nice 19-yard run by RB Kolby Smith on first down. They later converted a fourth-and-one play thanks to a Titans offsides penalty. Eventually, the Chiefs had to punt the ball away and the touchback gave Tennessee possession at its own 20-yard line. From there Collins led the offense on a nine-play, 80-yard scoring drive, with all but 17 of those yards coming on the ground from Johnson and White. White punched in his second TD run of the day, this one from the Kansas City two-yard line to make the Titans advantage The Chiefs offense put together a drive near the end of the half, but Novak s 50-yard FG attempt hit the right upright just before intermission. The third quarter proved to be a battle for the punters, as neither offense was able to get anything going offensively. Tennessee finally was able to pull together a third-quarter drive, after it took over at its own 41-yard line following a 57-yard punt by P Dustin Colquitt that came out of his own end zone. The Titans went 31 yards on eight plays, finishing up with a 46-yard FG by Bironas just before the end of the quarter. In the fourth quarter, White added his third scoring play, when he cracked through the right side of the Titans offensive line and huffed and puffed his way 80 yards into the end zone. 8 GAME 7 N.Y. Jets 28, Chiefs 24 October 26, 2008 Giants Stadium 78,037 KANSAS CITY N.Y. JETS The Jets punched in the winning score with 1:00 to play to register a win, spoiling the Chiefs hopes of pulling the upset. QB Tyler Thigpen was at the controls of a Chiefs offense that produced two TDs, 330 yards and did not have a turnover. The Chiefs defense picked off QB Brett Favre three times, including two by CB Brandon Flowers, who returned one for a 91-yard TD. The Jets got the ball first and Favre promptly moved his offense 73 yards on 10 plays that ended up with an 18-yard TD pass to RB Leon Washington for an early 7-0 lead. After the Chiefs punted in their first posession, Favre took the Jets back into scoring territory, but the Chiefs defense stiffened and K Jay Feely missed a 36-yard FG try. The Jets had the ball back as the first quarter was nearing an end, but Flowers picked off a Favre pass and returned the INT 27 yards to the Jets 38-yard line. The Chiefs got on the board early in the second quarter on a 19- yard touchdown pass from Thigpen to TE Tony Gonzalez. It capped a four-play, 38-yard drive after the Flowers INT to tie the score at 7-7. After trading punts, Thigpen continued his hot hand by completing his first 10 passes before throwing an incompletion with 3:59 to play in the period. Defensively, the Chiefs picked off another Favre pass, as S Jarrad Page pulled down the INT. The Jets got a TD before the end of the quarter. Washington took a draw play 60 yards for his second TD of the day, making the score 14-7 in favor of the Jets. The Chiefs came right back and moved the ball into scoring position, thanks to a 30-yard run by RB Jamaal Charles and a 21-yard Thigpen-to-Gonzalez completion. The Chiefs got their second touchdown of the half, as Thigpen hit WR Mark Bradley in the end zone to tie the game at as a replay review gave KC the tying score. Beginning the third quarter out of a no-huddle, shotgun scheme, the Chiefs offense moved 66 yards on 12 plays. Thigpen completed passes to five different receivers in the drive, moving the ball to the Jets nine-yard line before settling for a 30-yard K Connor Barth FG and a lead. Late in the quarter Favre moved the Jets 72 yards on 13 plays that ended on a one-yard TD run by RB Thomas Jones. Jones TD gave the Jets a lead as the third quarter came to a close. 9 GAME 8 Buccaneers 30, Chiefs 27 (OT) November 2, 2008 Arrowhead Stadium 74,045 TAMPA BAY KANSAS CITY K Matt Bryant s 34 yard FG with 10:24 remaining in overtime provided the winning margin as the Chiefs lost a gut-wrenching decision. QB Tyler Thigpen led KC on a beautiful 12-play, 69-yard drive to open the game, capped by a seven-yard TD throw to WR Dwayne Bowe to give the Chiefs an early 7-0 lead. On Tampa Bay s first offensive play, RB Earnest Graham fumbled after he was hit by LB Derrick Johnson. The ball was recovered by DE Turk McBride, setting up the offense at the Bucs 41-yard line. This time it took Thigpen seven plays to drive the offense in for a score, as RB Kolby Smith dove over left guard from one yard out to give KC a 14-0 advantage. The Bucs got the first points of the second quarter as Bryant hit a 25-yard FG to end a 13-play, 68-yard drive and make the score The Chiefs came right back and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey reached deep into his playbook to get the TD. On a third-andone, Charles took a direct snap from center and went over left tackle to gain 16 yards and a first down. Two plays later, Charles again took the direct snap, pitched to WR Mark Bradley on what looked like an end-around play. But Bradley threw on the run to a wide open Thigpen to make the score Later, CB Brandon Carr picked off a QB Jeff Garcia pass to set up a 39-yard K Connor Barth FG to extend the lead at RB Clifton Smith then ran through the Chiefs kickoff coverage unit for a 97-yard return TD to pull the Bucs to within 14 points at Bryant added a 43-yard FG to make the Chiefs lead at intermission. The third quarter proved to be a scoreless defensive battle, as the Chiefs and Bucs did not allow each other to mount much of an offensive attack. The Chiefs entered the fourth quarter with an 11-point lead, but the Bucs drove to the Chiefs 22-yard line, when Garcia threw to Clifton Smith, who caught the ball and then lost possession. But RB Jamaal Charles returned the favor on the next play, as he lost control of the ball and Tampa Bay recovered at the Chiefs three-yard line. Garcia handed off to Graham who stopped and lofted a pass to TE Alex Smith in the end zone for a three-yard TD. Tampa Bay went for two points, but the play was stopped and the Chiefs lead was now at The Chiefs got three points back on a 28-yard Barth FG that made the count with 7:38 remaining. Garcia then directed a long drive to the Kansas City seven-yard line. Graham ran left and lost the ball before he hit the goal line, with the ball recovered in the end zone by S Jarrad Page. Holding the football with 3:24 remaining in regulation, the Chiefs offense needed a first down to help kill off the clock, but an offensive pass interference on TE Tony Gonzalez negated a first down play and the Chiefs ended up punting the ball away. P Steve Weatherford s kick went 41 yards and was returned 14 yards by Clifton Smith to midfield. Garcia again drove the Bucs offense into the scoring zone and got a TD on a 24-yard pass to WR Antonio Bryant in the corner. Tampa Bay had to go for two points and Garcia found Alex Smith in the end zone to tie the score and send the game into overtime. The Bucs won the extra coin toss and moved 58 yards before Bryant drove home the game winner. GAME NOTES QB Tyler Thigpen became the fifth player in franchise history to run, catch and throw a TD. 10 GAME 9 Chargers 20, Chiefs 19 November 9, 2008 Qualcomm Stadium 67,510 KANSAS CITY SAN DIEGO For the third week in a row the Chiefs were positioned in the game s final five minutes to pull out a victory. Like the previous two weeks, they came up short, falling at San Diego as a failed two-point try doomed Kansas City. San Diego s offense got the ball first and kept it for over four minutes, but eventually the Chiefs defense stopped them and the Chargers were forced to punt. QB Tyler Thigpen then led the Chiefs offense on a 12-play, 95-yard drive for the game s first TD. Working out of the spread offense with no huddle on most plays, QB Tyler Thigpen hit seven of eight throws. The big one came when he beat the blitz and lofted a 30-yard TD pass into the right end zone to WR Mark Bradley to give the Chiefs a 7-0 lead. San Diego s offense began its next drive at their own 20-yard line and QB Philip Rivers drove them into Chiefs territory with a first-and-10 at the Kansas City 21-yard line. But the Chiefs defense was again able to hold. K Nate Kaeding kicked a 34-yard FG and early in the second quarter the score was 7-3. On its next offensive possession, San Diego again drove down the field and had a first-and-10 situation at the Chiefs 15-yard line. The Kansas City defense again was able to get the stop, as Kaeding kicked a 26-yard field goal and the Chiefs held a 7-6 lead with just under seven minutes to play in the half. Thigpen came right back and directed a seven-play, 83-yard scoring drive where he was four for four throwing the ball, including the 34-yard scoring pass to TE Tony Gonzalez. The PAT kick was botched on a bad snap and the Chiefs held a 13-6 lead with just over three minutes to play. San Diego again drove into Chiefs territory, but this time S Bernard Pollard snuffed out the possession with an interception of Rivers in the end zone and the half ended with the Chiefs ahead After the teams traded punts to start the second half, San Diego finally got its offense moving after taking possession at its own 42-yard line. Rivers drove the Chargers 58 yards on eight plays finishing up with a five-yard TD pass to WR Malcom Floyd to tie the count at The Chiefs defense did force another turnover before the quarter was over when DT Tank Tyler pressured Rivers and the quarterback s fluttering throw was picked off by S Jon McGraw. San Diego then grabbed the lead with a drive that started on the final play of the third quarter. Rivers moved the offense down the field, converting three first downs and finally ending up in the end zone with an eight-yard TD pass to TE Antonio Gates. It was a 14-play 94-yard drive that took 8:28 off the clock and put the Chargers up The Chiefs eventually got the ball back on their own 40-yard line with 3:00 to play. Thigpen led them down the field, converting several third down plays and a big fourth down throw to Bradley that continued the possession. On third-and-three from the Chargers three-yard line with 0:29 to play, Thigpen threw a dart to Gonzalez in the end zone for the TD that gave the Chiefs a chance for victory. With the score at 20-19, head coach Herm Edwards decided to go for two points and the victory rather than the tie, but Thigpen s pass for Gonzalez in the end zone was broken up and the Chargers prevailed GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez recorded his 24th career 100-yard game, tying TE Kellen Winslow for the most by a TE in NFL history. 11 GAME 10 Saints 30, Chiefs 20 November 16, 2008 Arrowhead Stadium 74,159 NEW ORLEANS KANSAS CITY The Chiefs offense had trouble scoring TDs in the Red Zone, while Kansas City s injury-riddled defense could not slow down the potent New Orleans offense in a loss to the Saints at Arrowhead Stadium. Both teams traded punts to start the game, but when the Saints got their second chance with the ball, the Chiefs defense forced their 10th turnover in the last four games. S Jarrad Page picked off a QB Drew Brees pass and gave the Kansas City offense possession at the New Orleans 47-yard line. Thigpen drove the offense nine plays to the end zone. RB Larry Johnson took a direct snap to convert a fourth-and-one play and picked up the first down on a four-yard run before QB Tyler Thigpen lofted a ball into the end zone where WR Dwayne Bowe out-jumped Saints CB Usama Young for a six-yard TD to give the Chiefs an early 7-0 lead. New Orleans came right back with a 54-yard kickoff return by WR Courtney Roby that set up Brees and the Saints offense at the Chiefs 44-yard line. Nine plays later, the drive stalled and K Garrett Hartley hit a 30-yard FG to cut the Chiefs lead to 7-3. Then Brees led the Saints on a seven-play TD drive. The big play was a third-down throw where Brees beat a Chiefs blitz with a 24-yard gain to uncovered RB Pierre Thomas. Four plays later, RB Deuce McAllister dove over the right side of the Saints offensive line for the TD and the Saints had a 10-7 lead. Thigpen brought the Chiefs right back and drove them to within inches of the end zone. The Chiefs settled for a 20-yard K Connor Barth FG to end the 14-play, 78-yard drive and tie the score at But New Orleans regained the lead just as the half ended. Brees took the Saints offense 62 yards on 12 plays before Hartley kicked a 23-yard FG to give the Saints a lead. New Orleans began the third quarter scoring after Kansas City punted on its opening possession of the half. It was just two plays before Brees and WR Lance Moore hooked up on a 47- yard TD throw to give New Orleans a lead. The Chiefs came back and put together a 14-play drive, but once again could not get into the end zone, despite having a first-and-goal at the Saints three-yard line. Barth s 21-yard FG pulled the Chiefs closer, as they trailed But the Saints roared right back down the field and put another TD on the board when Thomas scored on a one-yard run as the Saints surged ahead Kansas City s offense responded with a nine-play, 70-yard drive that finally finished in the end zone. Thigpen and Bowe hooked up for their second TD to make the score After the Chiefs defense forced the Saints to go three-andout, Thigpen guided Kansas City to the Saints 40-yard line. After an incompletion on third-and-two, the Chiefs opted to punt, pinning the Saints at their own 12-yard line. This time, Kansas City couldn t stop the Saints as New Orleans was able to add a 35-yard FG by Hartley with 3:28 remaining that gave the Saints a 10-point lead to make the final count GAME NOTES RB Larry Johnson (1,162) bypassed RB Ed Podolak (1,157) for third on the club s career rushing attempts chart. 12 GAME 11 Bills 54, Chiefs 31 November 23, 2008 Arrowhead Stadium 73,584 BUFFALO KANSAS CITY The Chiefs turned the ball over five times and that led to 20 points for Buffalo, more than enough to allow the Bills to leave Arrowhead Stadium with a victory. After Buffalo won the coin toss and deferred their choice to the second half, the Chiefs took the ball on an impressive 80-yard TD drive. The score came on a 36-yard hookup between QB Tyler Thigpen and RB Jamaal Charles, who lined up as a wide receiver. The first receiving TD of Charles career gave Kansas City a 7-0 lead. The Bills came right back and tied the score thanks largely to their running game. RB Marshawn Lynch had runs of three, 11, six, one and a final one-yard gain on a fourth-and-goal for the TD to cap the nineplay, 61-yard drive. After a Chiefs punt, Buffalo again drove the ball inside the KC five-yard line, but the Chiefs defense held and forced the Bills to settle for a 21-yard K Rian Lindell FG for a 10-7 lead. Kansas City answered three plays later with a go-ahead TD. A 63-yard run by RB Larry Johnson put the Chiefs at the two-yard line. Thigpen then hit a wide-open TE Tony Gonzalez to put Kansas City ahead That lead would be short-lived as Charles fumbled on Kansas City s next possession. Bills S George Wilson scooped up the ball at the Chiefs 28-yard line to set up a 39-yard Lindell field goal to make the score The momentum of the game changed for good on Kansas City s next possession as CB Leodis McKelvin jumped a slant route and returned the INT 64 yards for an TD that gave Buffalo a lead. The Chiefs then got right back into scoring territory and settled for a 45-yard K Connor Barth FG to pull within three points at 20-17, but Kansas City never got any closer as QB Trent Edwards and the Bills offense kicked it into high gear. Edwards and WR Lee Evans hooked up on a 52-yard pass play that put Buffalo back into scoring territory. Again, the Chiefs defense hung tough and allowed just three yards on three plays. Lindell s 34- yard FG gave the Bills a lead. They added to that before the end of the half thanks to another Chiefs turnover. Thigpen s pass for WR Will Franklin was picked off by McKelvin. In 1:16, Edwards led the Bills offense to another score, this time taking it in himself on a 15-yard scramble to give Buffalo a advantage at intermission. McKelvin gave the Bills great field position on the opening kickoff of the third quarter. His 46-yard return, aided by a Chiefs facemask penalty, set up Buffalo on the KC 33. Edwards then only needed four plays before he dove into the end zone for his second TD run of the afternoon as Buffalo took a commanding lead. That margin grew by three more points after another Chiefs turnover. Thigpen scrambled away from pressure and was headed for a first down when he stumbled, fell to the ground and fumbled the ball. Lindell then tacked on a 38-yard FG to put the Bills up Thigpen and the Chiefs offense battled back, composing a fiveyard, 68-yard TD drive that featured a 45-yard TD to WR Mark Bradley. That score cut the Bills lead to midway through the third quarter. But the Bills answered right back, driving 83 yards on nine plays before Edwards hooked up with WR Josh Reed for an eight-yard TD pass to put Buffalo ahead A 17-yard TD toss to TE Derek Schouman eventually pushed that margin to The Chiefs added a late TD pass to WR Dwayne Bowe as QB Quinn Gray replaced Thigpen at quarterback.
