1 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (2-11) VS. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (5-8) REGULAR SEASON GAME #14 SUNDAY, DECEMBER 14, :00 PM (CENTRAL) ARROWHEAD STADIUM KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI CBS Regional Coverage KCTV-5 (CBS in Kansas City) Play-by-play: Ian Eagle Color Commentator: Soloman Wilcots 2008 Stats and NFL Rankings THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs round out their 2008 division slate when San Diego visits Arrowhead on Sunday. The two clubs waged a fi erce battle in their initial meeting of the year as San Diego escaped with a victory when Kansas City eschewed a potential game-tying PAT to go for the win with a two-point attempt that fell short at Qualcomm Stadium (11/9). After KC s defense forced the Chargers to go three-and-out, QB Tyler Thigpen and company took over at their own 40-yard line with 3:00 remaining. A 14-play TD march that included three third or fourth-down conversions set up the dramatic two-point try. Kansas City is coming off a loss at Denver (12/7). San Diego gets 10 days of rest coming into this contest after snapping a three-game losing streak with a convincing 34-7 win last Thursday vs. Oakland (12/4). The Chargers registered a win in their most recent trip to Arrowhead (12/2/07), but haven t won back-to-back games in Kansas City since The home team has won seven of the last eight games in this series. The Chiefs have won nine of their last 10 division home games in the month of December with that lone blemish coming courtesy of the Chargers last season. Thigpen has provided a spark for the Chiefs offense since making his second NFL start at the N.Y. Jets (10/26). He has opened KC s last seven contests and has a pair of the league s most dynamic pass catchers at his disposal. In fact, Kansas City (Gonzalez & Bowe), Denver (Marshall & Royal) and Arizona (Fitzgerald, Boldin and Breaston) are the only NFL clubs with two or more players among the NFL s top 10 pass catchers in terms of receptions. TE Tony Gonzalez is on pace for his fourth 90-catch, 1,000-yard season and with another 121 yards will become the fi rst TE in NFL history with four 1,000-yard campaigns. Gonzalez has hit the 100-yard mark in three of his last fi ve outings. WR Dwayne Bowe has more receptions (137) and receiving yards (1,842) than any other player in his fi rst two seasons with the Chiefs. Bowe needs 153 yards to crack the 1,000-yard barrier after registering 995 receiving yards as a rookie in Kansas City is back at Arrowhead next week for a matchup with Miami (12/21), while San Diego travels to Tampa Bay (12/21). 4 Close Calls Have Been the Norm in the Chiefs-Chargers Series by Pete Moris Close Calls Have Been Frequent For Chiefs, Chargers The first meeting between the Chiefs and Chargers came down to a single point as San Diego prevailed by a margin at Qualcomm Stadium (11/9). That contest marked the 11th one-point game in the history of this series. Both clubs have come up short in a number of close games this season. Kansas City is 1-5 in games decided by seven points or less after getting a win at Oakland (11/30). The Chargers are 1-7 in such contests with that lone victory coming against the Chiefs. In total, the Chargers eight losses have come by an average of 4.25 ppg. Only Tampa Bay (3.67) has a smaller average margin of defeat. KC Seeks to Regain Its Arrrowhead Advantage vs. the AFC West The Chiefs have posted a.500 or better home record vs. AFC West opponents in 26 of the last 27 seasons. KC is 1-1 at Arrowhead against division foes in 2008 and owns a 14-2 record against division foes at Arrowhead in December since 90. Four of Kansas City s last six victories have come against AFC West opponents. The Chargers have lost nine of their last 11 visits to Arrowhead dating back to 97. San Diego is just 1-5 on the road in 2008, including a string of four straight losses, the club s longest stretch of road losses since dropping seven consecutive games (11/10/02-10/5/03). San Diego s lone road victory this season was a decision at Oakland (9/28). The Chargers are 3-7 all-time at Arrowhead in the month of December. Chiefs-Chargers Scoring Breakdown Putting plenty of points on the board is always a priority vs. the Chargers. Kansas City is 24-4 (.857) at Arrowhead dating back to 2003 when scoring 30 points or more, including the club s most recent home victory against the Chargers, a decision (10/22/06). Dating back to 95, Kansas City is 48-3 (.941) at home when it holds opponents to 17 points or less, including a 4-1 mark under Herm Edwards. San Diego has been held to 14 points or less in three of its six road losses in Despite their 1-5 road record, the Chargers have only been outscored by 13 total points (145 to 132) in their six road contests, an average margin of just 24.2 to KC is Seeking to Play Two Solid Halves vs. San Diego Teams leading at the half have won 15 of the last 20 games in the Chiefs-Chargers series dating back to 97. The last time Kansas City outscored the Chargers in the second half was a victory at San Diego (9/30/07) when the Chiefs held a 24-0 scoring edge after halftime. Both the Chiefs and Chargers have struggled in the second quarter this season. Only Detroit (135) has allowed more points in the second quarter than San Diego (131). KC hasn t fared much better, permitting 114 points in the second period. The Chargers have been outscored by a 35- point margin (131 to 96) in the second quarter, while the Chiefs have been outpointed by a 40-point margin (114 to 74) in that same period. However, San Diego has outscored its opponents by a 62-point margin (168 to 106) in the second half. Only three teams have a bigger second-half scoring surplus. That s not good news for the Chiefs who have struggled to score in the third quarter. 7 THE LAST TIME Chargers 20, Chiefs 19 November 9, 2008 Qualcomm Stadium 67,510 KANSAS CITY SAN DIEGO For the third week in a row the Chiefs were positioned in the game s final five minutes to pull out a victory. Like the previous two weeks, they came up short, falling at the San Diego as a failed two-point try doomed Kansas City. San Diego s offense got the ball first and kept it for over four minutes, but eventually the Chiefs defense stopped them and the Chargers were forced to punt. QB Tyler Thigpen then led the Chiefs offense on a 12-play 85-yard drive for the game s first TD. Working out of the spread offense with no huddle on most plays, QB Tyler Thigpen hit seven of eight throws. The big one came when he beat the blitz and lofted a 30-yard TD pass into the right end zone to WR Mark Bradley to give the Chiefs a 7-0 lead. San Diego s offense began its next drive at their own 20-yard line and QB Philip Rivers drove them into Chiefs territory with a first-and-10 at the Kansas City 21-yard line. But the Chiefs defense was again able to hold. K Nate Kaeding kicked a 34-yard FG and early in the second quarter the score was 7-3. On its next offensive possession, San Diego again drove down the field and had a first-and-10 situation at the Chiefs 15-yard line. The Kansas City defense again was able to get the stop, as Kaeding kicked a 26-yard field goal and the Chiefs held a 7-6 lead with just under seven minutes to play in the half. Thigpen came right back and directed a seven-play, 83-yard scoring drive where he was four for four throwing the ball, including the 34-yard scoring pass to TE Tony Gonzalez. The PAT kick was botched on a bad snap and the Chiefs held a 13-6 lead with just over three minutes to play. San Diego again drove into Chiefs territory, but this time S Bernard Pollard snuffed out the possession with an interception of Rivers in the end zone and the half ended with the Chiefs ahead After the teams traded punts to start the second half, San Diego finally got its offense moving after taking possession at its own 42-yard line. Rivers drove the Chargers 58 yards on eight plays finishing up with a five-yard TD pass to WR Malcom Floyd to tie the count at The Chiefs defense did force another turnover before the quarter was over when DT Tank Tyler pressured Rivers and the quarterback s fluttering throw was picked off by S Jon McGraw. San Diego then grabbed the lead with a drive that started on the final play of the third quarter. Rivers moved the offense down the field, converting three first downs and finally ending up in the end zone with an eight-yard TD pass to TE Antonio Gates. It was a 14-play 94-yard drive that took 8:28 off the clock and put the Chargers up The Chiefs eventually got the ball back on their own 40-yard line with 3:00 to play. Thigpen led them down the field, converting several third down plays and a big fourth down throw to Bradley that continued the possession. On third-and-three from the Chargers three-yard line with 0:29 to play, Thigpen threw a dart to Gonzalez in the end zone for the TD that gave the Chiefs a chance for victory. With the score at 20-19, head coach Herm Edwards decided to go for two points and the victory rather than the tie, but Thigpen s pass for Gonzalez in the end zone was broken up and the Chargers prevailed GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez recorded his 24th career 100-yard game, tying TE Kellen Winslow for the most by a TE in NFL history. 12 THE LAST GAME Broncos 24, Chiefs 17 December 7, 2008 INVESCO Field at Mile High 75,187 KANSAS CITY DENVER It was another one of those games that have been so typical for the Chiefs in the last two months. The game was in doubt down to the final five minutes and they were one play or one stop by the defense away from victory, but the Chiefs couldn t find that game-turning play in a loss to Denver at INVESCO Field. After the two teams traded possessions to open the game, the Chiefs offense drove 39 yards on six plays to set up a 26-yard FG by K Connor Barth for an early 3-0 lead. That margin would grow just a few plays later. The Broncos had a third-and-four at their own 25-yard line when QB Jay Cutler looked to his right for WR Brandon Stokely. But rookie CB Maurice Leggett picked off the pass and returned it 27 yards to give the Chiefs a 10-0 lead. Denver finally got its offense together just as the first period was ending. Rookie RB Peyton Hillis ran through untouched for an 18-yard TD to cut the Chiefs lead to The Chiefs came right back with a long, impressive scoring drive, as the offense kept the ball for 17 plays, moved 80 yards and chewed up 7:24 of the first-half clock. KC made a gutsy call on fourth-and-one at its own 41 and got just enough yardage on a QB sneak. QB Tyler Thigpen would also convert three third-down plays on the drive. He found TE Tony Gonzalez open at the goal linefor a 13-yard TD to give the Chiefs a 17-7 lead. It would be Kansas City s final points of the afternoon. Denver answered back with a long drive of its own, going 80 yards on 14 plays and using 6:57 of the second quarter. The Broncos picked up four first downs in the possession with the big play coming on a 21-yard Cutler-to- Marshall throw on third down. The TD came from that same connection, on a third-and-goal play at the Chiefs 12-yard line, as Marshall got to back the corner of the end zone to slice the Chiefs lead to at intermission. Denver got initial possession of the second half and put together another long drive, going 66 yards on 12 plays and using 6:43 off the clock. Cutler moved the sticks five times, setting up a first-and-10 at the Kansas City 17-yard line. But the Chiefs defense stiffened, giving up just two yards on three plays to force a 33-yard K Matt Prater FG that tied the score at After a Chiefs punt the Broncos again drove into Chiefs territory, but could not convert the trip into points as Prater s 48-yard FG went wide right. Late in the third quarter, the Broncos started a drive at their five-yard line after a nice 56-yard punt by P Dustin Colquitt. Cutler took his team 95 yards on 12 plays, picking up five first downs and holding the ball for over six minutes. Marshall capped off the drive with a six-yard TD on screen pass to the right side that gave Denver its first lead of the game at The Chiefs offense came right back with a drive deep into Denver territory, but faced fourth-and-goal from the five-yard line. Thigpen dropped back to pass, felt pressure on his outside and took off running up the middle. He was stopped inside the one-yard line and Denver took over on downs. The Broncos were then able to convert a pair of third downs to keep the ball and kill the clock, preserving the victory. GAME NOTES CB Maurice Leggett scored a TD for the second consecutive week, registering a 27-yard INT return. It was the second INT return for a TD for the Chiefs this season and KC s first defensive TD vs. Denver since 12/17/95. KC Barth, 26-yard field goal (6-43, 3:39).
