While these two franchises have been infrequent foes, the roots of this rivalry run deep, echoing back to the early days of the feud between Lamar Hunt s renegade American Football League and the established National Football League. Sunday will also serve as Alumni Day as KC will honor the 40th anniversary of the Super Bowl IV squad. As a tribute to Hunt, the 50th anniversary of the AFL and the 50th season of the Chiefs franchise, both squads will wear classic uniforms for this contest. The Chiefs will play the game as the Dallas Texans, marking the fi rst time since the 62 AFL Championship Game that Hunt s franchise has donned that gear. The victor of Sunday s contest will take possession of the Preston Road Trophy, a traveling trophy created by Hunt, whose widow Norma still lives in close proximity to Jerry and Gene Jones in the same Dallas neighborhood. The home team has won all three games in the Preston Road Trophy series which Hunt initiated in 98, including a 2004 preseason contest. While the historic implications of this contest are plentiful, getting the initial victory of the Todd Haley era against the Cowboys would also be signfi cant. Haley served as a Dallas assistant from under Bill Parcells and would relish the opportunity to register his initial NFL head coaching victory against America s Team. Haley s squad enters this contest following a loss vs. the N.Y. Giants (10/4). The Cowboys are 2-2 and visit Arrowhead after suffering a loss at Denver (10/4). Dallas led 10-0 in that contest before the Broncos rattled off 17 unanswered points, including 10 points in the game s fi nal six minutes. The Chiefs are 2-0 all-time vs. Dallas at Arrowhead and are seeking to make the Cowboys the fourth team that has visited Arrowhead at least three times in the regular season without registering a victory. Kansas City is 3-0 at Arrowhead vs. Arizona, Atlanta and Washington. The Chiefs sole home loss to the Cowboys came by a count at Municipal Stadium (10/25/70). Kansas City faces its fourth consecutive NFC East opponent when the club travels to Washington (10/18). The Cowboys enjoy a bye week before returning to action vs. Atlanta (10/25). Kansas City is 2-0 vs. the Cowboys at Arrowhead, registering a win (12/13/98) and a win (10/22/89) under Marty Schottenheimer. The Chiefs lone regular season win at Dallas was a triumph on Monday Night Football (11/10/75) under Paul Wiggin. That contest marked the Chiefs fi rst trip to their city of origin. The Chiefs also own a 32-6 victory vs. Dallas in an American Bowl preseason contest played in Monterrey, Mexico (8/5/96). KANSAS CITY VS. COWBOYS After lobbying unsuccessfully in the late 50s for an NFL expansion franchise for Dallas, Lamar Hunt was prompted to form the rival American Football League. Dallas then became center stage in the AFL-NFL rivalry as both the Texans and the Cowboys called the Cotton Bowl home during their three-year co-existence from The Texans boasted a 15-6 regular season record at the Cotton Bowl and claimed the 62 AFL Championship, while the Cowboys managed just a regular season home mark over the same span. But by 63, it was clear that Dallas could not support two pro football teams and despite the superior record of his club, Hunt opted to move his franchise to Kansas City. In 66, a series of clandestine meetings between Hunt and Cowboys President Tex Schramm began, ironically, at Love Field in Dallas. Those secret talks eventually set the stage for the AFL-NFL merger as Hunt and the rest of the AFL s Foolish Club were offi cially ushered into the NFL fold for the 70 season. While Hunt unsuccessfully lobbied for a head-to-head battle between the Texans and Cowboys during their Dallas co-existence, that game will be played out on Sunday. The Chiefs will wear their Dallas Texans uniforms for the first time since the 62 AFL Championship Game vs. Houston (12/23/62). Meanwhile, the Cowboys will wear vintage gear from their inaugural season to celebrate this rivalry.

His Dallas Texans franchise anchored the fledgling league. In 62, the franchise won the first of three AFL titles under head coach Hank Stram, thanks to NFL castoff QB Len Dawson and a host of other talented performers. To honor their lineage, the Chiefs will wear replicas of their 62 uniforms for three games in The club s helmet will feature a gray facemask, as well as the outline of the state of Texas with a gold star on Dallas. While the club s pants have remained virtually unchanged over the years, the striping of the socks has been altered to match the 62 look. In addition, the gold trim around the numerals and lettering on these classic uniforms is more narrow than it appears on current Chiefs jerseys. THE AFL S 50TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON The American Football League was officially born on August 14, 1959 when less than two weeks after his 27th birthday, Lamar Hunt called to order a meeting in Chicago. 4 Chiefs, Cowboys to Re-Live the Battle for AFL-NFL Supremacy by Pete Moris Some Additional Figures in the Dallas AFL-NFL Feud The competition for talent between the AFL and NFL was fi erce, perhaps no more so than between the Texans and the Cowboys. That battle began in earnest even before the two teams took the fi eld. After legendary Oklahoma head coach Bud Wilkinson turned down Lamar Hunt s overtures to coach the Texans, Hunt then pursued N.Y. Giants defensive coordinator Tom Landry, only to discover that Landry had already accepted the head coaching job for the yet-to-be-announced Dallas NFL franchise. Ultimately, Hunt s third choice for the job, Hank Stram, proved to be a perfect fi t. Here is a look at some players coveted by both franchises, a competition that continued even after Hunt s franchise relocated to Kansas City in 63. The most poignant tale involved Chiefs scout Lloyd Wells sneaking WR Otis Taylor (Prairie View A&M) out of a Dallas hotel unbeknownst to his NFL bodyguards and getting him on a plane to KC in 65. TEXANS, COWBOYS, CHIEFS, OH MY! Player Details and Results QB Don Meredith (SMU) Drafted by Texans and Bears in 60. Acquired in trade by Cowboys in 60. The Interconference Edge at Arrowhead Since the start of the 95 season, the Chiefs own a 21-8 (.724) record against NFC foes at Arrowhead, the sixth-best home interconference record in the NFL over that span. KC rattled off 12 straight home wins vs. NFC foes beginning with a OT victory vs. the N.Y. Giants (9/10/95), a streak that was snapped with a 13-3 loss vs. the N.Y. Giants (9/23/01). The Cowboys are (.432) vs. AFC opponents since the start of the 2000 campaign, including a 6-13 (.316) mark on the road. However, Dallas is 5-4 (.556) against AFC foes under Wade Phillips. The Cowboys have won four of their last six road contests against interconference opponents. Dallas is coming off a loss at Denver (10/4). Only Denver, Pittsburgh and Green Bay have been better at home over that span. Since Wade Phillips took over the fortunes of the Cowboys in 2007, Dallas owns an 11-7 (.611) regular season road record. Only Indianapolis (15-3), New England (14-3) and the N.Y. Giants (15-4) have better road marks over that span. However, the Cowboys are 2-6 (.250) in their last eight road contests. 7 THE LAST TIME Cowboys 31, Chiefs 28 December 11, 2005 Texas Stadium 63,432 KANSAS CITY DALLAS For the second straight week, the Chiefs fate came down to a big fourth-down play late in the game. Seven days earlier the Chiefs stopped the Broncos on fourth-and-one and sealed a win, this time in Dallas they couldn t get a similar defensive stand in a loss at Texas Stadium. Leading with 0:42 left in the game, Kansas City needed to hold on fourth-and-goal from its own six-yard line. When QB Drew Bledsoe s pass to TE Jason Witten was knocked down by S Greg Wesley, it looked like the Chiefs had made the play. However, a defensive holding call gave Dallas a first down at the three-yard line. Two plays later Bledsoe found TE Dan Campbell on a play-action pass for a TD and a lead with 0:22 left. The Chiefs would mount a furious rally, covering 48 yards in two plays and 15 seconds, setting up a potential game-tying 41-yard field goal try for K Lawrence Tynes. But a low snap and a kick that sailed wide right helped give Dallas the victory. RB Larry Johnson started the scoring with an 11- yard TD run for a 7-0 first-quarter lead. Dallas would notch a 34-yard field goal before Kansas City struck again. On the next possession, TE Tony Gonzalez broke the tackle of Pro Bowl S Roy Williams and raced 39 yards down to the Dallas six-yard line. From there Johnson made it 14-3 with a one-yard TD surge. The Cowboys answered with a 71-yard flea flicker to WR Terry Glenn. After getting the ball back from RB Marion Barber on the play, Bledsoe put the ball to Glenn right in stride for the score closing the gap to with 3:55 left in the first half. Just before halftime, former Chiefs LB Scott Fujita changed the course of the game. With the Chiefs already leading and poised at the Dallas nine-yard line Fujita blitzed off the edge and nailed an unsuspecting QB Trent Green, knocking the ball free in the process. Dallas DE Marcus Spears scooped up the fumble and raced 59 yards to the Kansas City 26-yard line reversing the momentum. The Cowboys took over with 1:02 remaining and converted the turnover into seven points as Bledsoe threw a 26-yard strike to TE Jason Witten for a touchdown and a Dallas lead. Kansas City made a statement in the opening minutes of half number two as Johnson ripped off his third TD of the game, this time from 21 yards out. In the process, Johnson eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the sixth straight game. The back-and-forth contest flipped back to the Cowboys as Glenn scored on a six-yard end around run. The drive was almost squashed earlier as a deflected Bledsoe pass fell through the hands of CB Patrick Surtain, and would have almost certainly been returned for a Chiefs TD. Instead, Dallas took a lead with 13:07 left in the game. The Chiefs would answer with a 47-yard TD pass from Green to WR Eddie Kennison to pull ahead with 3:55 left in the game. That set the stage for the Cowboys final 14-play, 68-yard drive and game-winning TD from Bledsoe to Campbell. GAME NOTES RB Larry Johnson produced a career-high three rushing TDs, giving him 14 on the season to tie for the third-highest single-season total in franchise history. KC L. 12 THE LAST GAME Giants 27, Chiefs 16 October 4, 2009 Arrowhead Stadium 69,238 N.Y. GIANTS KANSAS CITY The Chiefs scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn t enough as the N.Y. Giants registered a victory at Arrowhead. Giants QB Eli Manning threw for 292 yards with three TDs, including a pair scores to WR Steve Smith, who finished the contest with 11 receptions for 134 yards. New York added 156 rushing yards. The contest got off to an ominous start as RB Jamaal Charles fumbled on the game s opening kickoff. Giants LB Bryan Kehl recovered the fumble at the Kansas City 16-yard line, setting up New York for its first score. A threeyard Manning-to-Smith TD pass gave the Giants an early 7-0 lead. After going three and out on their opening possession, the Chiefs registered their own takeaway as LB Tamba Hali recorded his 13th career forced fumble while sacking Manning. DE Glenn Dorsey recovered the ball at the New York 41-yard line. RB Larry Johnson was given the ball on four successive plays to get to the Chiefs 16-yard line. A 34-yard K Ryan Succop FG narrowed the Giants lead to 7-3. On New York s ensuing possession, Chiefs CB Brandon Flowers intercepted a Manning pass, returning it to the Kansas City 20-yard line. But the Chiefs couldn t capitalize. Manning then orchestrated a four-play, 71-yard drive to start the second quarter that was capped by a 25- yard TD pass to Smith pushing the New York lead to 14-3 with 13:39 left in the first half. Late in the half, Manning ran the two-minute drill proficiently, getting the Giants in field goal range. K Lawrence Tynes drilled a 25-yard FG to extend New York s lead to 17-3 at halftime. The Chiefs attempted an onside kick to open the second half, but were unable to recover, giving the Giants the ball on the Kansas City 42-yard line. New York was forced to settle for a 40-yard Tynes FG as the Giants extended their lead to After a Chiefs punt, Manning again drove the Giants deep into Kansas City territory, but Tynes misfired wide right on a 38-yard FG try with 3:00 remaining in the third quarter, keeping the score at Following another Chiefs punt, Manning notched his third TD drive of the game. A six-play, 66-yard scoring march was highlighted by a 54-yard TD pass to WR Hakeem Nicks, giving the Giants a 27-3 lead with 13:17 left to play. But the Chiefs wouldn t go away. Charles returned the ensuing kickoff 53 yards to the Giants 48-yard line. On fourth down and 11, WR Bobby Engram made a great second effort to get to the sticks for a first down. The Chiefs then converted another fourth-and-11 play when Cassel hit WR Dwayne Bowe, to give KC first and goal at the eight. Cassel eventually punctuated the 11-play, 48-yard drive with a one-yard TD pass to TE Sean Ryan. KC s two-point try failed, making the count Kansas City forced a three and out on New York s next series. Cassel quickly moved the Chiefs into scoring territory once again. Facing fourth and goal from the two, Cassel appeared to pull the ball down to run, but instead threw a lob pass to a diving WR Bobby Wade for a twoyard TD making the score in favor of the visitors with 5:01 left in the game. After a failed onside kick attempt the Chiefs defense held, getting the ball back with 3:56 left to go in the game. But the Chiefs could only manage one first down. The Giants effectively milked the clock after Kansas City turned the ball over on downs. The Chiefs got one final snap to end the contest as New York departed Arrowhead with a victory.
