7 THE LAST TIME Chiefs 31, Rams 17 November 5, 2006 Edward Jones Dome 66,191 KANSAS CITY ST. LOUIS Thanks to three first-half turnovers by the Rams and a season-high 172 rushing yards out of RB Larry Johnson, the Chiefs escaped St. Louis with a win in the Governor s Cup series. Chiefs RB Dee Brown pounced on the first fumble after WR Dane Looker muffed a P Dustin Colquitt punt at the Rams 14-yard line. That set up a Johnson oneyard TD run for a 7-0 lead. On the next possession, Chiefs DE Jared Allen sacked and stripped St. Louis QB Marc Bulger at the Rams 46-yard line. Rookie DT Stephen Williams recovered the fumble and watched his offense go for a knockout blow on the very next play. QB Damon Huard tossed a perfect 43-yard pass to WR Samie Parker down to the three-yard line. Huard then found TE Tony Gonzalez in the end zone for a TD and a 14-0 lead. LB Keyaron Fox forced a third St. Louis fumble, this time by RB Steven Jackson, on the next series. Allen recovered the ball for Kansas City at the St. Louis 33- yard line, setting up a 42-yard K Lawrence Tynes field goal to open the game with 17 straight points. Staring down a 17-0 deficit and searching for answers, the Rams switched to a no-huddle offense to shake things up. The change in gameplan seemed to ignite them as Bulger fired back-to-back big gains to WR Isaac Bruce to move inside the Red Zone. From there Jackson bulled across the goal line from two yards out to cut the Chiefs lead to 17-7 in the second quarter. Unfazed, the Chiefs would answer with a crisp, eight-play, 80-yard scoring march. Huard completed three passes on the drive including his second TD pass to Gonzalez, this time from 25 yards out. On the play, Huard side-stepped a blitzing CB Travis Fisher and found his Pro Bowl tight end down the seam to take a 24-7 lead with 0:48 left in the half. The Rams would sneak in a 41- yard field goal from Jeff Wilkins as time expired in the half to make the score at the break. St. Louis would edge closer with a 12-play, 80- yard drive that ended with a Bulger-to-WR Kevin Curtis pass on third-and-goal from the two-yard line. Bulger who completed five of six passes on the drive and the Rams were now within one score at with 3:50 left in the third quarter. Kansas City s offense struggled to find its footing in the second half as it mustered just one first down in the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter the Chiefs got rolling from their own six-yard line. Johnson ripped off runs of 15 and 16 yards. Then Huard hooked up with Gonzalez on a big third-down conversion to keep the drive alive. On the very next play, Huard took a hit, but still managed to hit TE Kris Wilson with an 11-yard TD pass to take a lead with 6:20 left in the game. St. Louis drove into the Red Zone, however its comeback bid came up short when Bulger s third and fourth-down passes from inside the five-yard line were batted down. First, S Sammy Knight knocked down the third-down attempt, then S Bernard Pollard iced the Chiefs victory on fourth down. GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez caught two touchdown passes, bypassing WR Otis Taylor (57) for the most TD catches in Chiefs history. RB Larry Johnson made his 20th career NFL start. 12 THE LAST GAME Seattle 14, Chiefs 10 August 29, 2009 Arrowhead Stadium 66,553 SEATTLE KANSAS CITY The Chiefs suffered a setback vs. Seattle, as Kansas City endured another narrow preseason loss. Kansas City won the coin toss and took the ball. Three plays into the game, QB Matt Cassel was sacked by DT Brandon Mebane. Cassel left the field with a leg injury and did not return. QB Tyler Thigpen took the helm and would play into the third quarter. The Chiefs first takeaway of the 2009 preseason was a big one. CB Brandon Flowers returned a QB Matt Hasselbeck pass that was tipped by DE Tyson Jackson for a 28-yard TD to give the Chiefs a 7-0 advantage with 11:21 left in the first quarter. After a 51-yard FG attempt by Seattle K Olindo Mare sailed wide left, the Chiefs offense found rhythm in their running game behind RBs Larry Johnson and Jamaal Charles. Charles broke loose for a 31-yard jaunt putting KC in scoring position to end the first quarter, but K Ryan Succop misfired for the first time this preseason, pushing a 28-yard FG attempt wide left. Seattle put together an impressive march to open the second quarter. The Seahawks orchestrated a drive that went 14 plays for 72 yards eating up over six minutes off the clock. However, the Chiefs defense stiffened in the Red Zone, forcing another field goal attempt. Mare s second opportunity from 27 yards out drifted wide left keeping the count at 7-0 in favor of the Chiefs. Both clubs would exchange punts again. Then Seattle went to work in its two-minute offense. With two timeouts remaining, Hasselbeck caught fire connecting with WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh on successive plays for 13 and 14 yards, getting the Seahawks down to the KC eight-yard line. Hasselbeck went to the well one more time, connecting with Houshmandzadeh on a quick out for a TD, capping off a seven-play, 48-yard drive to tie the score at 7-7 with 0:56 left in the first half. But Kansas City displayed some two-minute muster of its own, cooking up a four-play, 30-yard drive to set up Succop once again. His 53-yard attempt hit the crossbar, keeping the score knotted at 7-7 to end the half. Seattle took the opening kickoff of the second half and promptly mounted a nine-play, 74-yard TD drive. Hasselbeck connected with TE John Carlson for a 28- yard TD to put Seattle ahead 14-7 with 10:37 left in the third quarter. QB Seneca Wallace entered the game in place of Hasselbeck, who finished the night 19 of 25 for 216 yards with two TDs and an interception for a rating. Wallace put Seattle in striking distance, but K Brandon Coutu couldn t take advantage of it. He came up short on a 50-yard FG attempt. QB Matt Gutierrez took the helm for KC at the end of the third quarter, completing all five of his passes for 65 yards in a drive that consumed eight plays and 73 yards. Kansas City was unable to convert on third and nine at the Seattle 18-yard line, setting up Succop for his third field goal attempt. Succop s 35-yard field goal trimmed Seattle s lead to with 11:54 left to play. Following a Seahawks punt, the Chiefs took over. However, Gutierrez was intercepted by CB Marquis Floyd with 6:24 remaining. Again KC s defense held strong, forcing another Seahwaks punt. Kansas City had one final opportunity to orchestrate a scoring drive, but on third and 22 from their own 49- yard line, Gutierrez s pass was intercepted by LB Will Herring, sealing the Seahawks victory. KC Flowers, 28-yard INT return (Succop kick). SEA Houshmandzadeh, 8-yard pass from Hasselbeck (Mare kick) (7-48, 1:11). SEA Carlson, 28-yard pass from Hasselbeck (Mare kick) (9-74, 4:23).
