7 THE LAST TIME Texans 20, Chiefs 3 September 9, 2007 Reliant Stadium 70,080 KANSAS CITY HOUSTON After falling to the Texans 20-3 in Week One of the 2007 regular season, the Chiefs were looking for a redo. A pair of special teams miscues from Kansas City and a 77-yard TD pass for Houston helped the Texans jump to a 10-0 halftime lead and the Chiefs could never recover. The game s opening minutes unfolded almost exactly according to script for the Chiefs. After forcing the Texans off the field with a three-and-out to start the game, QB Damon Huard and the Kansas City offense engineered a 15-play, 76-yard drive that took 7:05 off the clock. The contest began to deviate from the plan when the Chiefs drive stalled at the Texans 12-yard line and rookie K Justin Medlock pushed his 30-yard field goal attempt wide left. Kansas City dodged a bullet late in the first quarter when S Jarrad Page intercepted QB Matt Schaub in the end zone. Schaub had bootlegged to the perimeter, but Page stepped in front of an errant pass intended for WR Andre Johnson, keeping the game tied at 0-0. The Chiefs wouldn t be able to hold Houston off the board for long as WR Eddie Drummond fumbled a punt return at the Chiefs 26-yard line. The Texans converted the turnover into three points on a 26-yard field goal from K Kris Brown. After a Chiefs punt on the ensuing possession, that 3-0 count turned into a 10-0 deficit for Kansas City on the Texans next play from scrimmage. Off a nice play-action fake from Schaub, Johnson caught a pass behind the Chiefs secondary and raced 77 yards for a touchdown with 6:00 left before halftime. The second half started in disastrous form as TE Kris Wilson fumbled the third play from scrimmage when CB Jamar Fletcher delivered a blow just as he caught a pass from Huard. DE Mario Williams then scooped up the loose ball and ran 38 yards untouched for a touchdown and an imposing 17-0 Texans lead. The Chiefs challenged the ruling on the field as it appeared uncertain whether Wilson had control of the ball and was able to make a football move. However, the play was upheld by instant replay. Kansas City cracked the scoreboard late in the third quarter after an 11-play, 63-yard drive resulted in a 27- yard Medlock field goal. Huard completed six of seven passes for 62 yards, including a 25-yard connection to rookie WR Dwayne Bowe. The Chiefs penetrated the Red Zone for the second time in the game, but had to settle for three points when RB Larry Johnson was tackled short of the goal line on third-and-15. Just when the Chiefs were threatening to get back into the game at 17-3, Houston sucked the life from the visitors with a 15-play drive that ate 10:26 off the clock. Three third-down conversions kept the clock and the chains moving before Brown knocked through a 28- yard field goal. That score put the Texans ahead 20-3 with only 5:00 left in the game. A late interception by DT Travis Johnson would then seal the Texans win. Johnson, who rushed for a Chiefs single-game record 211 rushing yards in his last regular season game at Houston, was held to 89 total yards, including 43 yards on 10 carries. GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez recorded his 100th consecutive game with a catch, giving him the second-longest receiving streak by a tight end in NFL history. HOU K. 12 THE LAST GAME Colts 19, Chiefs 9 October 10, 2010 Lucas Oil Stadium 66,869 KANSAS CITY INDIANAPOLIS After a back-and-forth battle that saw only field goals registered on the scoreboard for 55 minutes, Indianapolis walked off the field at Lucas Oil Stadium with a 19-9 victory. The Chiefs managed to keep QB Peyton Manning in check, holding the Colts to 244 net passing yards and a season-low 341 yards of total offense. RB Jamaal Charles carried the ball 16 times for 87 yards to lead the ground attack. TE Tony Moeaki led the team with four receptions for 50 yards. The Chiefs opened the game with a surprise onside kick, but the ball didn't travel 10 yards, giving Indianapolis the ball on the Kansas City 37-yard line. But the Chiefs defense held, forcing the Colts to settle for a 20-yard FG from K Adam Vinatieri, giving the Colts a 3-0 lead with 9:59 left in the opening quarter. On Kansas City's ensuing drive, the Chiefs relied on the ground game to move the ball into Indianapolis territory. Faced with fourth-and-two from the Indianapolis eight-yard line, the Chiefs elected to go for it, but QB Matt Cassel s pass was broken up by LB Gary Brackett, giving the Colts the ball on their own eight-yard line. The Colts drove the ball into KC territory, but the Chiefs defense held once again. Vinatieri converted a 24-yard FG to give the Colts a 6-0 lead with 9:14 left in the first half. Just before intermission Manning and company faced fourth and two, S Jon McGraw tackled Addai one yard short of a first down, giving the Chiefs the ball with 0:18 left to play in the first half. Cassel found WR Chris Chambers for 13 yards and a late hit out of bounds added 15 yards for the Chiefs. Cassel then hit Moeaki on the sideline for six yards to stop the clock. Kansas City narrowed the Colts lead to 6-3 on a 45-yard K Ryan Succop FG with 0:07 left to play in the first half. On the Colts first posession in the second half, they again had to settle for a FG. Vinatieri's 47-yard kick extended the Colts lead to 9-3 with 8:31 left in the third quarter. On the ensuing posession the Chiefs drove into the Red Zone, and Succop nailed a 35-yard FG, making the score 9-6 with 4:35 left in the third stanza. S Jon McGraw picked off a Manning pass at the Indianapolis 34-yard line and returned it four yards to set Succop up for a 43-yard FG. Succop nailed his third kick of the day, tying the game at 9-9 with 3:26 left to play in the third quarter. A defensive pass interference penalty moved the Colts into KC territory again. A critical 14-yard third-down pass to WR Pierre Garcon was ruled a completion but was overturned after Head Coach Todd Haley challenged the play, forcing a 42-yard Vinatieri FG that gave the Colts the 12-9 lead with 14:40 left to play in the game. Manning led the Colts on a methodical drive that ended in the contest s only TD. Manning went sevenfor-nine on the drive that was capped by an 11-yard TD run from RB Mike Hart putting the Colts on top 19-9 with 4:02 left to play in the game. The Chiefs offense moved the ball into Colts territory. Faced with fourth-and-four, Succop attempted a 51-yard FG that sailed wide right. The Colts ran the clock out for the 19-9 victory after the missed kick. IND Vinatieri, 20-yard field goal (9-35, 4:56). IND Vinatieri, 24-yard field goal (16-86, 7:50).
