8 THE LAST TIME Chargers 20, Chiefs 17 September 25, 2011 Qualcomm Stadium 62,236 KANSAS CITY SAN DIEGO Despite holding the Chargers passing game in check for most of the game, the Chiefs couldn t take advantage of San Diego s miscues and fell to the Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium. Kansas City s offense never found its rhythm as San Diego held advantages in total yards (375-to-252), passing (258-to-171) and rushing (117-to-81). The Chargers also won the time of possession battle (34:43- to-25:17). S Kendrick Lewis intercepted a QB Philip Rivers pass at the Kansas City 15-yard line and returned it 50 yards to the SD 35 to halt a Chargers drive. A holding penalty on fourth and one stymied a potential first down and facing fourth and 10, K Ryan Succop s 38-yard FG attempt sailed wide right. DE Wallace Gilberry registered a sack and strip of Rivers in San Diego territory, but the Chargers recovered the ball. Three plays later, RB Ryan Mathews dove into the endzone from two yards out to put the Chargers up 7-0 with 12:45 left in the first half. After trading punts, Flowers intercepted a deep Rivers pass at the goalline and returned it 43 yards to the Kansas City 43. Following the interception, Kansas City suffered another three and out. On third and three, Rivers found Mathews out of the backfield for a 24-yard pickup and a first down. After an offensive pass interference penalty by the Chargers on third and 10, K Nick Novak connected on a 35-yard field goal, putting San Diego up 10-0 with 0:28 left before halftime. Coming out of halftime, LB Tamba Hali sacked Rivers for a five-yard loss, eventually forcing a Chargers punt. Facing third and seven, Cassel found WR Dwayne Bowe for 23 yards to the San Diego four-yard line. Cassel found Bowe in the endzone on the next play as Bowe hauled in the pass, making the score 10-7 with 11:21 left in the third quarter. Rivers opened the Chargers next drive with a 26-yard pass to TE Randy McMichael. Mathews would cap the drive with a four-yard rush, pushing the Chargers lead to 17-7 with 7:32 left in the third quarter. Cassel found WR Steve Breaston for a five-yard gain on fourth and four to keep the Chiefs next drive alive. After McCluster picked up a first down on third and two, KC s drive stalled and Succop connected on a 33-yard field goal, making the score in favor of the Chargers with 12:57 left in the game. Mathews picked up 14 yards to move the ball near midfield for San Diego. A 23-yard pass from Rivers to Crayton got the ball to the Chiefs 25-yard line. The Kansas City defense stiffened up, forcing a 41-yard Novak field goal. The kick put the Chargers up with 8:03 left in the contest. On third and 10, Cassel hit Bowe for 21 yards to the Kansas City 41-yard line. Cassel connected with Bowe on third and 11 for 19 yards and a first down to keep the drive moving. On second and 13, Cassel hit Breaston for 43 yards, giving the Chiefs the ball on the San Diego one-yard line. Cassel then hit Pope in the back of the end zone for a TD, making the score with 4:58 left in the game. San Diego took over on its own 33-yard line. A 21-yard pass from Rivers to RB Mike Tolbert gave San Diego a fresh set of downs. Facing fourth and one, Rivers QB sneak was stuffed by DE Tyson Jackson and LB Jovan Belcher, giving KC the ball on its own 34-yard line with 1:26 left to play in the contest. On first down, Cassel found Pope for 23 yards. Cassel s next pass was intercepted by S Eric Weddle, ending Kansas City s hopes of a last-minute comeback. 13 The Kansas City Chiefs secondary stole the show as the defensive backfield accounted for six interceptions off Oakland QBs Kyle Boller and Carson Palmer en route to a 28-0 blanking of the Raiders. Kansas City s six interceptions tied for the secondmost in team history. It marked the seventh time in Chiefs annals that KC recorded six interceptions off opposing quarterbacks in a single game. CB Brandon Flowers (58 yards) and S Kendrick Lewis (59 yards) each returned interceptions for a touchdown. The Chiefs offense couldn t get going on its first drive, but the Chiefs defense set the tone early as Lewis intercepted a Boller pass and returned it 59 yards to the end zone to put the Chiefs up 7-0 less than three minutes into the game. Two drives later, CB Brandon Flowers notched the Chiefs second interception off Boller as he picked off a pass at the Chiefs 40-yard line. QB Matt Cassel converted two third-down plays through the air and eventually found WR Dwayne Bowe for 15 yards, getting inside the one-yard line. On the next play, FB Le Ron McClain broke the plane of the goalline, putting the Chiefs up 14-0 with 1:53 left to play in the first quarter. Following the Chiefs score, Boller marched Oakland into Chiefs territory. On the next play, Bush got loose up the middle, scampering for 35 yards to the Kansas City five-yard line. Oakland got to the one-yard line after two rushes. On third and one, the Chiefs defense stopped Bush for no gain. LBs Derrick Johnson and Jovan Belcher stuffed Bush short of the goal line on fourth and goal to give the Chiefs possession. After the teams traded punts, the Chiefs forced another three and out but an illegal hands to the face penalty on Oakland s punt gave the Raiders an automatic first down at their own 10-yard line. As Oakland moved the ball down the field, Boller's pass for Heyward-Bey was intercepted by CB Brandon Carr at the KC 10-yard line. Kansas City took over on the 12-yard line with 0:55 left in the first half. Cassel s hail mary pass was intercepted by S Chinedum Ndukwe at the two-yard line to end the first half. The Kansas City defense held Oakland to a three and out on its first drive of the half. Two 15-yard penalties on the Oakland defense helped the Chiefs move the ball down the field. CB Javier Arenas lined up at quarterback in the Wildcat formation and scored from seven yards out, making the score 21-0 with 10:25 left to play in the third quarter. On the Chiefs next drive, Cassel s pass for RB Dexter McCluster was intercepted by CB DeMarcus Van Dyke and returned to the Oakland 22-yard line. On third and nine, Palmer found Heyward-Bey for 21 yards, but two plays later, Flowers grabbed his second interception of the day, this time off Palmer, and returned it 58 yards to the end zone to mark the Chiefs second interception return TD of the day, putting the Chiefs up 28-0 with 14:20 left in the game. S Jon McGraw joined the interception club at the Chiefs nine-yard line as he grabbed a Palmer pass that had been tipped, the Chiefs fifth interception of the day. After a Chiefs punt, CB Travis Daniels intercepted a Palmer pass at the KC 18-yard line for the Chiefs. After Oakland went three and out and punted, Kansas City was able to run the clock out on the shutout victory.
