THE MATCH-UP Kansas City opens a two-game homestand beginning with a pivotal AFC West match up against San Diego on Sunday (10/22). With twotime Pro Bowl QB Trent Green sidelined, Kansas City has produced a 2-2 record in four starts by Chiefs backup QB Damon Huard, who was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Chiefs to a comeback victory at Arizona (10/8). Although Kansas City owns a 2-3 mark after suffering a 45-7 loss at Pittsburgh (10/15), the Chiefs have won eight of their last nine home meetings with San Diego. The Chiefs will face a 4-1 San Diego squad that is arguably one of the NFL s hottest clubs. The Chargers only loss came by a narrow, margin at Baltimore (10/1). San Diego is coming off a victory last week at San Francisco (10/15) and has boasted an average margin of victory of 24.8 ppg in its four wins, the second-largest winning margin of any team in the league this season. Sunday s contest will mark the first time that Herm Edwards has squared off against Marty Schottenheimer as Kansas City s head coach. Edwards served three seasons ( 92-94) as the Chiefs defensive backs coach during Schottenheimer s 10-year tenure ( 89-98) as KC s field general. The two coaches have met on four previous occasions when Edwards served as head coach of the N.Y. Jets ( ), including a OT win by the Jets in the 2004 AFC Playoffs (1/8/05). Chargers QB Phillip Rivers currently leads the AFC with a rating and will make his Arrowhead debut on Sunday. Meanwhile, Huard boasts a 94.3 rating for Kansas City, a mark that ranks fourth in the conference. Chiefs RB Larry Johnson ranks second in the NFL, averaging yards from scrimmage (rushing and receiving) per game, while Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson is tied for fifth in that category at ypg. Tomlinson is tied for the NFL lead with seven TDs, including a franchise-record four rushing scores last week. The schedule doesn t get any easier for the Chiefs. Up next are the defending NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks at Arrowhead (10/29). Excluding one tie between the two teams, a total of 10 games in this series have been decided by exactly one point, the most of any series in the league since 60. The last such one-point game in this AFC West series resulted in a Chargers win at San Diego (10/13/02). Interestingly, the initial meeting between these two squads was the first regular season game in the history of both franchises when the Dallas Texans lost a decision to the L.A. Chargers at the L.A. Coliseum (9/10/60). The Chiefs and Chargers have met just one time in postseason play. 4 Chiefs Need to Rebound at Arrowhead Against a Well-Balanced San Diego Squad by Pete Moris Chiefs Defense Seeks to Contain High-Flying San Diego Offense The Chiefs will be seeking to maintain their stingy scoring defense at Arrowhead. That will be a tough assignment against a San Diego squad that currently ranks second in the NFL in scoring at 30.2 ppg, an average that trails only Chicago (31.2 ppg). Dating back to a 20-7 win vs. San Diego (12/24/05), Kansas City has allowed just 8.3 ppg in the club s last four games at home, holding opponents scoreless in 12 of 16 quarters over that span. The Chiefs haven t allowed a second-half TD in their last five home games, giving up just four second-half FGs in those contests. Meanwhile, SD has been shut out in the second half of its last three losses dating back to KC has won 20 consecutive games when holding its opponents to 21 points or less at home, the third-longest active streak in the league behind Pittsburgh (26 games) and Seattle (21 games). Dating back to 95, the Chiefs are 51-7 (.879) at Arrowhead when holding their foes to 21 points or less. San Diego is 7-21 (.250) under Marty Schottenheimer when being held to 21 points or less, including a string of six consecutive losses. Kansas City is 27-4 (871) at Arrowhead when topping the 30-point barrier since 95. However, San Diego s defense has not given up 30 points or more in 22 consecutive contests dating back to In fact, the Chargers have held eight straight opponents under the 21-point barrier. The Chiefs can t afford to let the Chargers offense pile up 30 or more points this week. San Diego is 13-1 (.929) when topping the 30-point barrier dating back to 2004, including a streak of seven consecutive wins. Holding a Halftime Lead Particularly Important this Week Teams holding a halftime lead have won 13 of the last 15 games in the Chiefs-Chargers series dating back to 97. KC has led the Chargers at halftime in nine straight meetings at Arrowhead, outscoring San Diego by a 156-to-44 margin in the first half of those games. KC is 48-7 (.873) in regular season action at Arrowhead when leading at the half dating back to 95. Dating back to 2004, the Chargers are 19-4 (.826) in games when they score first and own an identical record when leading at halftime over that same span. Since Marty Schottenheimer took over the Chargers in 2002, San Diego is just 6-24 (.200) when trailing at halftime. KC Typically Controls the Turnover Table at Arrowhead The Chiefs boast a 15-game winning streak at Arrowhead when posting a positive turnover ratio, the third-longest active streak in the league. Dating back to 95, the Chiefs own a 42-4 (.913) record at Arrowhead with a positive takeaway margin. KC is a combined +9 (19 takes/10 gives) in its last nine meetings with the Chargers at Arrowhead. San Diego owns a 16-2 (.889) record with a positive turnover ratio dating back to However, San Diego is just 7-37 (.159) with a negative turnover mark dating back to 2000, including a 6-21 (.222) mark under Marty Schottenheimer. San Diego currently leads the AFC with a +8 turnover differential (10 takes/2 gives). The Chargers have committed an NFL-low two turnovers this season and are the only team in the league that hasn t lost a fumble. Tennessee OT vs. Cleveland 9/22/02 Chiefs-Chargers Rushing Stats to Watch While the Chiefs have averaged rushing yards and two TDs in their last three meetings with San Diego at Arrowhead, piling up gaudy rushing stats could be difficult for both teams this week. San Diego ranks third in the NFL in rushing defense, permitting just 71.6 ypg on the ground. Meanwhile, Kansas City has allowed just 80.5 rushing ypg in its last four home contests, giving up exactly 80 ground yards in a 20-7 win vs. San Diego (12/24/05). The Chargers are currently on pace to post their best rushing defense since they led the league in 98 when they gave up 71.3 yards per game on the ground. The Chiefs and Chargers are traditionally tough at stopping the run, but both teams are also historically productive on the ground offensively. Since the start of the 2001 NFL campaign, no teams own more rushing TDs than Kansas City (134) and San Diego (103). The Chiefs own a 19-2 (.905) record at Arrowhead dating back to 2002 when scoring two or more rushing TDs, including a streak of seven straight wins. KC s last loss in such a circumstance was a setback vs. SD (11/28/04). Dating back to 2001 only Atlanta (146.6), Denver (145.3) and Pittsburgh (137.6) have averaged more rushing yards per game than Kansas City (134.7) and San Diego (129.7). This season, only Atlanta (232.0) is averaging more ypg on the ground than San Diego (158.2). RBs Larry Johnson, LaDainian Tomlinson Set to Square Off Since the start of the 2004 campaign, only Pittsburgh (2) has allowed fewer individual 100-yard rushers than San Diego (3). One of those three 100-yard outings permitted by the Chargers came courtesy of RB Larry Johnson, who produced 131 yards in his last meeting with SD, a 20-7 Chiefs win at Arrowhead (12/24/05). The Chargers entered that game leading the league in rushing defense, allowing 74.9 ypg. KC and SD are the NFL s two best teams when it comes to preventing 100-yard rushers on their home turf. SD boasts an NFL-best 18-game streak without allowing at 100-yard back at home, while KC has gone 17 straight games without relinquishing a 100-yard rusher at Arrowhead. SD is just 2-21 (.087) when allowing a 100-yard rusher dating back to 97. The Chiefs are 11-4 (.733) when Johnson boasts a 100-yard rushing performance, including a pristine 8-0 mark at Arrowhead. Johnson has been held under the 100-yard plateau the past two weeks. Meanwhile, the Chargers boast a 21-8 (.724) record when RB LaDainian Tomlinson registers a 100-yard rushing game, including a streak of 13 straight wins. The last time SD lost a game when Tomlinson cracked the 100-yard rushing plateau was a Chiefs win at Arrowhead (11/30/03). Three of SD s eight losses when Tomlinson reaches triple digits have come vs. KC. The Chiefs are 12-2 (.857) in games when Johnson scores two or more total TDs, while the Chargers are 16-2 (.889) in games when Tomlinson scores two or more rushing TDs, including last week s win at San Francisco (10/15) when he had a franchise-record four rushing TDs. In nine career starts vs. the Chiefs, Kansas City s defense has held Tomlinson to an average of just 76.3 rushing ypg. In his last three starts at Arrowhead, the Chargers Pro Bowl rusher has accumulated a total of just 127 rushing yards, an average of 42.3 ypg. After bouncing back from an early 14-0 deficit last week at Arizona, the Chiefs were unable to repeat that feat for a second consecutive contest. The Steelers dominated from the game s outset, jumping out to a 31-0 halftime lead en route to a 45-7 victory. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger registered his first win of the season, connecting on 16 of 19 passes for 238 yards and two TDs, finishing the contest with a rating. Kansas City CB Ty Law came up to make the tackle, but slipped and Holmes raced downfield for a 50-yard game. Parker capped the drive with a three-yard run, giving Pittsburgh a 7-0 lead. The Steelers struck paydirt again on their third possession when Roethisberger found WR Nate Washington wide open in the Chiefs secondary for a 47-yard score. The touchdown gave Pittsburgh a 14-0 advantage late in the first quarter. Another Parker TD minutes later put Pittsburgh ahead Pittsburgh added another scoring drive before the half came to a close set up by RB Najeh Davenport s 44-yard run. However, the Chiefs couldn t produce any points from the turnover, handing the ball back to the Steelers when S Troy Polamalu intercepted a QB Damon Huard pass. The Chiefs mounted their best drive of the day during the third quarter. Huard started to heat up, finding WRs Eddie Kennison and Samie Parker for big gains. RB Larry Johnson capped the drive with a determined two-yard scoring run when he carried a host of Pittsburgh defenders into the end zone. The score cut the Steelers lead to Kansas City s momentum would be short-lived. 12 THE LAST TIME Chiefs 20, Chargers 7 December 24, 2005 Arrowhead Stadium 75,956 SAN DIEGO KANSAS CITY On a rain-soaked Christmas Eve, the Chiefs earned their gift: a 20-7 win over the Chargers to stay in the postseason hunt. In the mud and slop, RB Larry Johnson scored two touchdowns and topped the 100-yard plateau for an eighth straight game. The victory marked Kansas City s 18th consecutive December win at Arrowhead Stadium and its 10th straight December home win against an AFC West foe. A steady rain and a muddy track appeared to be the perfect conditions for Johnson. Facing a San Diego run defense that was ranked number one in the NFL and hadn t allowed a 100- yard rusher in 16 consecutive games, Johnson put a big dent in those numbers. The Pro Bowl RB finished with a game-high 131 yards on 32 carries plus four catches for 48 yards, while his counterpart and fellow Pro Bowl RB LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for just 47 yards on 15 carries. The Chiefs used their iron horse Johnson to open the scoring. Aided by a 44-yard punt return from WR Dante Hall, Kansas City took over with a short field. Johnson did the rest, accounting for all 43 yards of the scoring drive (38 rushing, five receiving) including a four-yard sweep around the left end for the TD. In his previous two starts vs. the Chiefs, San Diego TE Antonio Gates tortured the Kansas City defense with five touchdowns catches. In the first quarter he was at it again, grabbing an 18-yard TD pass from QB Drew Brees to tie the score at 7-7. However, on the first play of the second quarter, QB Trent Green struck back, lobbing a 42-yard touchdown pass to WR Samie Parker to retake the lead at Later in the quarter Green and company struck again. Cashing in on good field position and a defensive pass interference penalty on San Diego, Green hooked up with Johnson for a nifty 28-yard touchdown pass. Green tossed the short checkdown pass to Johnson, who then shed two would-be tacklers and incredibly stayed inbounds tip-toeing the sideline into the end zone. A replay review upheld the score as Johnson was able to clip the pylon on his way into the end zone. A dropped snap caused a missed extra point attempt, keeping the score at 20-7 at the half. San Diego looked poised to get back into the game coming out of halftime. Tomlinson who had just 13 rushing yards in the first half started finding running room, ripping off a 20-yard run and moving the Chargers inside the KC Red Zone. However, CB Patrick Surtain intercepted a tipped pass at the KC 16-yard line to keep the Chiefs in control. San Diego would only cross into Chiefs territory once more as KC s defense threw a second-half shutout for the first time since Late in the fourth quarter the Chargers drove as deep as the KC 22-yard line, but the Red and Gold defense stiffened and turned them over on downs to seal the 20-7 win. CHIEFS L. Johnson, 4-yard run (Tynes kick) (6-43, 2:58). CHARGERS Gates, 18-yard pass from Brees (Kaeding kick) (10-75, 4:06). CHIEFS Parker, 42-yard pass from Green (Tynes kick) (8-67, 4:13).
