1 REGULAR SEASON GAME #2 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (0-1) AT CHICAGO BEARS (0-1) SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, :15 PM (CENTRAL) SOLDIER FIELD CHICAGO, ILLINOIS TV: CBS National Coverage (KCTV-5 in Kansas City) Jim Nantz and Phil Simms. NATIONAL RADIO: Sports USA Radio Larry Kahn and Doug Plank. LOCAL RADIO: KCFX-FM (101.1) Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson, Bob Gretz and Bill Grigsby. THE MATCH-UP Kansas City travels to the Windy City for the first time since 99 as the Chiefs visit Chicago for the Bears home opener at Soldier Field. The Chiefs are coming off a 20-3 loss at Houston (9/9). Meanwhile, the defending NFC Champions are 0-1 after suffering a 14-3 setback at San Diego (9/9). Kansas City is seeking to avoid an 0-2 start for the second straight year, while Chicago hasn t opened a season with two straight losses since The Chiefs and Bears both concluded their 2006 campaigns with playoff losses to the Indianapolis Colts. Kansas City dropped a 23-8 decision in an AFC Wild Card Game, while the Bears suffered a setback in Super Bowl XLI. Both Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards and Bears head coach Lovie Smith are disciples of Colts head coach Tony Dungy. Edwards first worked as a scout with KC while Dungy was a Chiefs assistant coach and then joined Smith as a member of Dungy s Tampa Bay staff from Edwards departed Tampa to coach the N.Y. Jets in 2001, the same year Smith joined the Rams as that club s defensive coordinator. Both Edwards and Smith are building defenses in the images of Dungy s vaunted Tampa Bay squads. Smith s Bears posted a 13-3 regular season mark in 2006 thanks to a defense that forced a league-high 44 takeaways. Chicago led the NFC by permitting just 15.9 ppg and ranked second in the conference in total defense (294.1 ypg). In Kansas City, the improving Chiefs defense allowed 19.7 ppg a year ago to rank 11th in the NFL and are seeking their first top 10 finish in that category since leading the league in that category at 14.5 ppg in 97. Offensively, the Chiefs and Bears both rely on punishing ground games. Two-time Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson established a franchise record with 1,789 rushing yards in 2006 as Kansas City ranked ninth in the league, averaging rushing ypg. For Chicago, RB Cedric Benson takes over the role as feature back in 2007 after he and RB Thomas Jones combined for 1,857 rushing yards a year ago. After opening the season with back-to-back road contests, Kansas City returns to Arrowhead next week for its home opener vs. Minnesota (9/23). Chiefs RB Priest Holmes registered a then-nfl record 27th rushing TD of the season in that contest as KC concluded the regular season with a 13-3 mark as Dick Vermeil s squad captured the AFC West title. The Bears won the last regular season meeting between the two teams in Chicago by a count at Soldier Field (9/12/99). That 99 Opening Day matchup marked the head coaching debuts for both KC s Gunther Cunningham and Chicago s Dick Jauron. Kansas City s lone regular season victory at Soldier Field came in the 90 season finale when a win propelled the Chiefs to an 11-5 record and a Wild Card berth, marking the first of six consecutive playoff berths under head coach Marty Schottenheimer from That nearly 17-season drought without a victory in the Windy City is KC s longest current stretch without a win against any NFC North opponent. The Chiefs own a 3-2 record against the Bears at Arrowhead. Chicago s last win in Kansas City marked the only blemish on the Chiefs home schedule in 93 when the Bears won a decision at Arrowhead (11/21/93). Perhaps the most significant Chiefs-Bears game was a preseason contest played at Kansas City s Municipal Stadium (8/23/67). In one of the first preseason meetings between AFL and NFL teams, the Chiefs upended Chicago by a count. A 32-point second quarter and a sensational 99-yard WR Noland Smith kickoff return TD helped Kansas City amass the highest point total in any game preseason, regular season or postseason in the franchise s history.

He originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL s Minority Coaching Fellowship in 89. He later served as a scout ( 90-91, 95) and also coached defensive backs ( 92-94). Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 27, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay s assistant head coach/dbs coach under Tony Dungy from Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in 76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia ( 77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in 86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State ( 87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in 90. EDWARDS VS. Smith was named NFL Coach of the Year by AP in 2005 after leading the Bears to their first division title since Born on May 8, 1958, the Big Sandy, Texas native entered the NFL coaching ranks on Tony Dungy s staff as Tampa Bay s LBs coach ( 96-00). He then served as defensive coordinator in St. Louis ( ). In his inaugural year with St. Louis, the Rams ranked third in the NFL in total defense (279.4 ppg) and was seventh in scoring defense (17.1 ppg) as the franchise posted a 14-2 record and advanced to Super Bowl XXXVI. Smith has spent 24 years coaching at the collegiate and professional levels. He enjoyed collegiate coaching stints at Tulsa ( 83-86), Wisconsin ( 87), Arizona State ( 88-91), Kentucky ( 92), Tennessee ( 93-94) and Ohio State ( 95). Smith was a two-time All-America pick and three-time All-Missouri Valley Conference choice as a defensive back at Tulsa. REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDER The National Football League and the American sports community lost a true treasure on December 13, 2006 when Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt passed away. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of both the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Few individuals helped change the face of America s favorite game for the better than this quiet Texan. Hunt played a key role in the AFL-NFL merger talks in the 60s and actually coined the term Super Bowl. As part of a year-long tribute to Hunt in 2007, the Chiefs will wear a commemorative patch that prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact the American Football League has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt s humble styles, the letters LH are subtly displayed on the football of the AFL logo, symbolizing the fact that the Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch will be affixed to the left chest of both KC s home and away jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will be worn over the heart of every Chiefs player. GONZALEZ CAN SET NFL TD MARK FOR TIGHT ENDS Chiefs eight-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez ranks second in NFL history among tight ends in receptions (726), receiving yardage (8,738) and TD receptions (61), trailing only Shannon Sharpe (815-10,060, 62 TDs). Gonzalez s 61 total TDs with the Chiefs trail only RB Priest Holmes (83) in KC annals. Gonzalez ranks second in franchise history with 8,752 combined net yards. In addition, no tight end in NFL history owns more consecutive 60-catch campaigns (eight) than Gonzalez. Gonzalez owns 18 career 100-yard receiving games, trailing only WR Otis Taylor (19) for the top mark in Chiefs history. Those yard games are fourth in NFL history among TEs, trailing only Kellen Winslow (24), Jackie Smith (22) and Sharpe (19). Gonzalez extended his team-record streak of games with at least one reception to 100 contests at Houston (9/9), meaning only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE in NFL history. Head coach Herm Edwards became the first coach in KC history to guide his squad to the postseason in his inaugural season with the Chiefs, leading KC to a 9-7 mark in He also became just the fifth coach in NFL history to accomplish that feat with two different franchises (NYJ 2001, KC 2006), joining Sid Gilman, Chuck Knox, Wade Phillips and Bobby Ross as the only other men in NFL history to turn that rare double play. Edwards 2006 Chiefs were also just the fifth team since 2000 to open the year with an 0-2 record and still qualify for the postseason. THE 2007 CHIEFS Kansas City continued to bolster its defensive unit in the off-season. LB Donnie Edwards (UFA-SD) rejoined the club after a five-year stint in San Diego. Rookie K Justin Medlock (D5b-07) handles the placement and kickoff chores. LS Jean- Philippe Darche (UFA-SEA) takes over the long-snapping duties. KC signed former Lions Pro Bowl return man WR Eddie Drummond on Aug. 26th. Edwards has returned four of his 27 INTs for TDs, giving him more INT return scores than any HOF linebacker. In total, Edwards has six career TDs (four INT returns, two fumble returns). Edwards scored his first TD on a 79-yard fumble return at Chicago (9/12/99). In addition, Edwards 1,513 career tackles also rank fifth among active NFL players. The Chiefs posted a perfect 4-0 record against NFC opponents in In fact, no NFL team boasts a better home interconference record than the 20-4 (.833) mark that the Chiefs have compiled at Arrowhead since 95. The Bears own a (.469) record against AFC opponents since the start of the 95 campaign. Chicago is just 4-9 (.308) against AFC foes under Lovie Smith, including a 2-4 (.333) record at Soldier Field. Indianapolis (.592) Points Could Be at a Premium on Sunday at Soldier Field Sunday s contest features a pair of squads led by head coaches who cut their teeth in the NFL as defensive assistants. With both KC and Chicago boasting defenses that held their foes under 20.0 ppg on average in 2006, points could be at a premium on Sunday. KC s defense allowed just 13 offensive points on Opening Day, while Chicago permitted only 14 points against San Diego s vaunted offensive unit. Chicago owns a stellar 21-5 (.808) record dating back to 2005 in games when it holds opponents to 21 points or less. In fact, the Bears have won 14 consecutive games at Soldier Field dating back to 2004 when Chicago holds its foes at or under the 21-point plateau. The Bears allowed opponents to score an average of just 16.4 ppg at home in Only Jacksonville (11.0), Baltimore (12.0), Miami (15.9) and New England (16.1) boasted lower defensive scoring averages at home a year ago. Clearly, the 21-point barrier will be the line of demarcation in Sunday s game. The Chiefs allowed just 15.3 ppg in their three road victories in 2006 and ranked 11th in the league in scoring defense overall, permitting just 19.7 ppg on the season. The Bears are just 1-6 at Soldier Field under Lovie Smith when permitting more than 21 points, while Kansas City owns a 6-1 record when scoring 21 points or more under Herm Edwards. Ball Security is a Must Against the Bears The Chiefs will face a Chicago squad that forced a league-high 44 takeaways (20 FRs, 24 INTs) in The Bears also scored an NFLhigh 143 points off turnovers in 2006, meaning 33.5% (143 of 427) of their points were set up by opponents miscues. The Bears are 18-3 (.857) under Lovie Smith when boasting a positive turnover ratio and own a streak of 12 straight wins at Solider Field when plus in turnovers. KC and Chicago are two of the NFL s best squads in terms of forcing turnovers. KC has registered at least one takeaway in 20 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NFL, ranking right ahead of the Bears, who own a 17-game streak. While Chicago has been adept at forcing turnovers, only Oakland (46), Cleveland (42), Detroit (39) and Pittsburgh (37) committed more turnovers than Chicago (36) in Kansas City won three road contests in 2006 and posted a combined +6 turnover differential (9 takes/3 gives) in those contests. The Chiefs are 5-1 under Herm Edwards when they boast a positive turnover differential and are 6-1 under Edwards when they commit one turnover or less. Both the Chiefs and Bears committed four turnovers apiece on Opening Day. MOST CONSECUTIVE GAMES FORCING A TURNOVER, ACTIVE Team Streak Start of Streak Date 1. Kansas City 20 L at N.Y. In 2006, Huard set a KC single-season record and led the NFL with a 0.4 INT percentage (one INT in 244 attempts). Huard owns a 5-0 record when he compiles a rating, registering four such contests with KC in Bears QB Rex Grossman is 17-7 (.708) in regular season play as an NFL starter. Among active starters, only Philip Rivers, SD (15-2,.882), Tom Brady, NE (71-24,.747) and Ben Roethlisberger, PIT (30-11,.731) own better winning percentages. Chicago was 7-0 in 2006 when Grossman boasted a rating of or better. Only Rams QB Marc Bulger (8) produced more rating games a year ago. The Chiefs own a 19-4 (.826) record when they force two or more INTs dating back to Grossman suffered 20 INTs in 2006 and had six contests when he was picked off two or more times, including all three of the club s regular season losses. RB Larry Johnson s Rushing Rampage Chiefs RB Larry Johnson is seeking to become the first runner in NFL history to register three consecutive seasons with over 1,750 rushing yards. In 2006, Johnson joined RB Eric Dickerson, L.A. Rams ( 83-84) and RB Terrell Davis, Denver ( 97-98) as just the third back to ever record back-to-back 1,750-yard campaigns. KC is 18-6 (.750) in the regular season when Johnson tops the century mark, including victories in eight of its last 10 such contests. However, piling up rushing yards won t be easy against Chicago. Over the past two seasons, only four other teams have relinquished fewer rushing yards per game at home than Chicago (92.1 ypg). KC has allowed just 83.6 rushing ypg in its last 16 home contests, the third-lowest tally in the league in The Bears defense currently leads the NFL, allowing 2.1 yards per rushing attempt. Meanwhile, KC ranks eighth in that category, permitting 3.5 yards per attempt. Kansas City owns a 12-2 (.857) record in games when Johnson scores two or more rushing TDs, but hitting paydirt against the Bears will also be difficult at Soldier Field. In 2006, only Baltimore (1) allowed fewer rushing TDs at home than Chicago (3). FEWEST RUSHING YARDS ALLOWED AT HOME, Team Yards Allowed Per Game Per Carry TDs 1. 7 LAST GAME Texans 20, Chiefs 3 September 9, 2007 Reliant Stadium 70,080 KANSAS CITY HOUSTON After falling to the Texans 20-3 in Week One of the 2007 regular season, the Chiefs were looking for a redo. A pair of special teams miscues from Kansas City and a 77-yard TD pass for Houston helped the Texans jump to a 10-0 halftime lead and the Chiefs could never recover. The game s opening minutes unfolded almost exactly according to script for the Chiefs. After forcing the Texans off the field with a three-and-out to start the game, QB Damon Huard and the Kansas City offense engineered a 15-play, 76-yard drive that took 7:05 off the clock. The game began to deviate from the script however when the Chiefs drive stalled at the Texans 12-yard line and rookie K Justin Medlock pushed his 30-yard field goal attempt wide left. Kansas City dodged a bullet late in the first quarter when S Jarrad Page intercepted QB Matt Schaub in end zone. Schaub had bootlegged to the perimeter, but Page stepped in front of an errant pass intended for WR Andre Johnson, keeping the game tied at 0-0. The Chiefs wouldn t be able to hold Houston off the board for long as WR Eddie Drummond fumbled a punt return at the Chiefs 26-yard line. The Texans converted the turnover into three points on a 26-yard field goal from K Kris Brown. After a Chiefs punt on the ensuing possession, that 3-0 count turned into a 10-0 deficit for Kansas City on the Texans next play from scrimmage. Off a nice play-action fake from Schaub, Johnson caught the pass behind the Chiefs secondary and raced 77 yards for a touchdown with 6:00 left before halftime. The second half started in disastrous form as TE Kris Wilson fumbled the third play from scrimmage when CB Jamar Fletcher delivered a blow just as he caught a pass from Huard. DE Mario Williams then scooped up the loose ball and ran 38 yards untouched for a touchdown and an imposing 17-0 Texans lead. The Chiefs challenged the ruling on the field as it appeared uncertain whether Wilson had control of the ball and was able to make a football move. However, the play was upheld by instant replay. Kansas City cracked the scoreboard late in the third quarter after an 11-play, 63-yard drive resulted in a 27- yard Medlock field goal. Huard completed six of seven passes for 62 yards, including a 25-yard connection to rookie WR Dwayne Bowe. The Chiefs penetrated the Red Zone for the second time in the game, but had to settle for three points when RB Larry Johnson was tackled short of the goal line on third-and-15. Just when the Chiefs were threatening to get back into the game at 17-3, Houston sucked the life from the visitors with a 15-play drive that ate 10:26 off the clock. Three third-down conversions kept the clock and the chains moving before Brown knocked through a 28- yard field goal. That score put the Texans ahead 20-3 with only 5:00 left in the game. A late interception by DT Travis Johnson would then seal the Texans win. Johnson, who rushed for a Chiefs single-game record 211 rushing yards in his last regular season game at Houston, was held to 89 total yards, including 43 yards on 10 carries. GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez recorded his 100th consecutive game with a catch, giving him the second-longest receiving streak by a tight end in NFL history. HOU K. 12 LAST TIME Chiefs 31, Bears 3 December 28, 2003 Arrowhead Stadium 78,413 CHICAGO KANSAS CITY With the number two seed in the AFC Playoffs already wrapped up, the Chiefs game vs. Chicago meant little for the postseason picture. But that made little difference to RB Priest Holmes and his Chiefs teammates. Thanks to Holmes record-setting performance and an inspired defensive effort, Kansas City (13-3) pounded the Bears, 31-3 and gained momentum heading into the playoffs. After the teams battled through a scoreless first quarter, Holmes reached football immortality with a pair of rushing scores. First, Holmes waltzed into the end zone for his NFL-record 26th rushing touchdown of the season on a one-yard score in the second quarter, breaking the mark of 25 established by Emmitt Smith in 95. Holmes would then complete his magical regular season in the third quarter with a two-yard leap across the goal line. That score gave him an NFL-record 27 TDs on the season, breaking Marshall Faulk s previous mark of 26 total TDs set in Holmes also passed WR Otis Taylor for the club s all-time touchdown record with 61 scores. Defensively, the Chiefs were looking to make a statement and reestablish the mystique of Arrowhead. Aside from only surrendering three points, the Chiefs also pitched their fifth first-half shutout of the season and held the Bears to just 84 yards rushing. DE R-Kal Truluck racked up 2.0 of Kansas City s 4.0 sacks, as the Red and Gold defense grabbed two INTs and limited Chicago to just 13.3% (2-of-15) on third down conversions. In the second quarter, the Chiefs sandwiched a QB Trent Green-to-WR Eddie Kennison six-yard TD pass in between Holmes scores to go up Chicago would threaten to score just before halftime as it drove to the KC six-yard line. However, QB Kordell Stewart completed a pass to WR Bobby Wade who failed to get out of bounds, thus allowing the clock to run out on the first half. The Bears finally got their only points of the game on a 46-yard FG in the third quarter. Following Holmes second TD and a 38-yard field goal from K Morten Andersen, first round draft pick RB Larry Johnson gave Chiefs fans a glimpse of the future when he scored his first career touchdown, a five-yard dash. Set up by a 20-yard pass from backup QB Todd Collins to TE Billy Baber, Johnson converted the TD and finished the game s scoring at GAME NOTES The Chiefs extended their franchise-record home winning streak to 13 games and posted the fourth undefeated home season in team history. QB Trent Green joined Len Dawson ( 66-68) as the only other QB in Chiefs annals to start every regular season game in three consecutive seasons. The KC offensive line started all five starters in the same positions for the 32nd consecutive game, the NFL s longest such streak since San Diego had a 40-game streak in RB Priest Holmes scored 162 points in 2003, the highest single-season scoring total in Chiefs history. Those 162 points are the fourth-highest single-season total by any player in NFL annals. KC Holmes, 1-yard run (Andersen kick) (11-51, 5:27). KC Kennison, 6-yard pass from Green (Andersen kick) (8-58, 4:19). CHI Edinger, 48-yard field goal (11-52, 5:36). KC Holmes, 2-yard run (Andersen kick) (5-28, 2:15).
