1 2007 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS ADDITIONAL STATISTICS FINAL REGULAR SEASON

2 GAME 1 Texans 20, Chiefs 3 September 9, 2007 Reliant Stadium 70,080 KANSAS CITY HOUSTON After falling to the Texans 20-3 in Week One of the 2007 regular season, the Chiefs were looking for a redo. A pair of special teams miscues by Kansas City and a 77-yard TD pass for Houston helped the Texans jump to a 10-0 halftime lead and the Chiefs could never recover. The game s opening minutes unfolded almost exactly according to script for the Chiefs. After forcing the Texans off the field with a three-and-out to start the game, QB Damon Huard and the Kansas City offense engineered a 15-play, 76-yard drive that took 7:05 off the clock. The game began to deviate from the script however when the Chiefs drive stalled at the Texans 12- yard line and rookie K Justin Medlock pushed his 30-yard field goal attempt wide left. Kansas City dodged a bullet late in the first quarter when S Jarrad Page intercepted QB Matt Schaub in end zone. Schaub had bootlegged to the perimeter, but Page stepped in front of an errant pass intended for WR Andre Johnson, keeping the game tied at 0-0. The Chiefs wouldn t be able to hold Houston off the board for long as WR Eddie Drummond fumbled a punt return at the Chiefs 26-yard line. The Texans converted the turnover into three points on a 26-yard field goal from K Kris Brown. After a Chiefs punt on the ensuing possession, that 3-0 count turned into a 10-0 deficit for Kansas City on the Texans next play from scrimmage. Off a nice play-action fake from Schaub, Johnson caught the pass behind the Chiefs secondary and raced 77 yards for a touchdown with 6:00 left before halftime. The second half started in disastrous form as TE Kris Wilson fumbled on the third play from scrimmage when CB Jamar Fletcher delivered a blow just as Wilson caught a pass from Huard. DE Mario Williams then scooped up the loose ball and ran 38 yards untouched for a touchdown and an imposing 17-0 Texans lead. The Chiefs challenged the ruling on the field as it appeared uncertain whether Wilson had control of the ball and was able to make a football move. However, the play was upheld by instant replay. Kansas City cracked the scoreboard late in the third quarter after an 11-play, 63-yard drive resulted in a 27-yard Medlock field goal. Huard completed six of seven passes for 62 yards, including a 25-yard connection to rookie WR Dwayne Bowe. The Chiefs penetrated the Red Zone for the second time in the game, but had to settle for three points when RB Larry Johnson was tackled short of the goal line on third-and-15. Just when the Chiefs were threatening to get back into the game at 17-3, Houston sucked the life from the visitors with a 15-play drive that ate 10:26 off the clock. Three third-down conversions kept the clock and the chains moving before Brown knocked through a 28-yard field goal. That score put the Texans ahead 20-3 with only 5:00 left in the game. A late interception by DT Travis Johnson would then seal the Texans win. Johnson, who rushed for a Chiefs single-game record 211 rushing yards in his last regular season game at Houston, was held to 89 total yards, including 43 yards on 10 carries. HOU K. Brown, 26-yard field goal (7-21, 3:54). HOU A. Johnson, 77-yard pass from Schaub (K. Brown kick) (1-77, 0:12). HOU M. Williams, 38-yard fumble return (K. Brown kick). 3 GAME 2 Bears 20, Chiefs 10 September 16, 2007 Soldier Field 62,095 KANSAS CITY CHICAGO Kansas City s defense kept the Chiefs in the game throughout the day by forcing three Chicago turnovers, but it wasn t enough as the Chiefs dropped a decision at Soldier Field. A special teams TD and a bit of trickery helped the Bears build a 17-7 halftime advantage as Chicago never looked back. The Kansas City defense made its first statement on the Bears second offensive play of the game. Chicago QB Rex Grossman hit WR Bernard Berrian for an 18-yard gain, but Chiefs S Bernard Pollard forced a fumble and DT Alfonso Boone recovered it. However, Kansas City was unable to mount a drive when it took over at midfield. Chicago put together the first scoring drive of the afternoon with 79-yard march that took over eight minutes. The balanced drive featured eight rushing plays and seven passes. The Bears used a bit of chicanery to score their first touchdown when Grossman hit tackle-eligible John St. Clair for a two-yard scoring pass and a 7-0 lead. That lead quickly doubled as WR Devin Hester returned a Chiefs punt 73 yards for a touchdown minutes later. Chicago would tack on a 46-yard field goal to give the home squad a 17-0 edge with 2:30 remaining in the second quarter. The Chiefs finally got on the board at the end of the first half when QB Damon Huard engineered the two-minute drill to perfection. After a 31-yard completion to TE Kris Wilson, Huard hit TE Tony Gonzalez for a 26-yard pickup. On the next play, Huard lofted a pass to the back corner of the end zone where rookie WR Dwayne Bowe hauled in the pass which was actually intended for Gonzalez for a 16-yard TD. Bowe s first career score cut the Chicago lead to The Bears would turn another punt return into points in the third quarter when Hester s 31-yard return set up a 38-yard field goal from K Robbie Gould, giving the Bears a 20-7 advantage. The Kansas City defense forced its second turnover of the day when LB Napoleon Harris intercepted a Grossman pass. K Dave Rayner, who was signed during the week, was good on his first FG attempt for Kansas City. He split the uprights on a 45-yard field goal to cut Chicago s lead to The Chiefs caught a bad break in the early going of the fourth quarter when a 35-yard Huard-to-Bowe flea flicker into the end zone was nullified by an illegal motion penalty. Instead of the seven points, Kansas City would get nothing as a subsequent 48-yard field goal try by Rayner was blocked four plays later. LB Donnie Edwards would give Kansas City life as he intercepted a Grossman pass and returned it to the Chicago 18- yard line on the Bears next possession. The Chiefs, however, came up empty again as Huard s fade pass for WR Samie Parker was intercepted by S Danieal Manning in the end zone. Kansas City would get one final opportunity to put points on the board when QB Brodie Croyle relieved a wounded Huard. Croyle methodically marched the Chiefs to the Chicago 24- yard line, but RB Michael Bennett was stripped by CB Charles Tillman with 2:21 remaining and the Bears were able to run the clock out to preserve the victory. CHI St. Clair, 2-yard pass from Grossman (Gould kick) (15-79, 8:01). CHI Hester, 73-yard punt return (Gould kick). CHI Gould, 47-yard field goal (10-46, 4:44). 4 GAME 3 Chiefs 13, Vikings 10 September 23, 2007 Arrowhead Stadium 78,038 MINNESOTA KANSAS CITY A high-pressure defense and critical halftime adjustments were a winning recipe as the Chiefs won their 2007 home opener with a victory over the Vikings. After gaining just 56 yards of offense in the first half, Kansas City opened things up in the second half with a pair of long scoring drives, while the Chiefs swarming defense held the Vikings in check. The Vikings built a 10-0 lead on the strength of good field position and rookie RB Adrian Peterson. Starting at midfield on Minnesota s first possession, QB Kelly Holcomb connected on passes of 10 and 11 yards before Peterson bounced a run off right tackle and scored an 11-yard TD for a 7-0 lead. Minnesota would later tack on a field goal after a Chiefs turnover. DE Spencer Johnson hit QB Damon Huard as he was about to pass, forcing a fumble that the Vikings would recover at the KC 33-yard line. The KC defense stiffened and the Vikings would settle for a 22-yard field goal from K Ryan Longwell. The Chiefs would get on the board when DE Jared Allen forced a Peterson fumble and K Dave Rayner banged through a 39-yard FG to make the score 10-3 late in the half. Trying to mount a last minute rally before halftime, Minnesota drove as deep as the KC 30-yard line. However, the Vikings drive was snuffed out when Allen sacked Holcomb on both third and fourth down to end the half and keep the Chiefs within one score at That set the stage for the Chiefs second-half comeback. Kansas City s defense pitched a shutout after intermission and the offense did just enough to escape Arrowhead with the season s first victory. Trailing 10-3 at halftime, the Chiefs offense was stuck in neutral and having little success mounting a rushing attack. Minnesota boasted the NFL s top run defense in 2006 and used a constant eight-man front to hold RB Larry Johnson to just 42 yards on the day. However, Johnson s work keeping the defense honest allowed Huard to orchestrate two scoring drives in the second half. Huard had only 37 passing yards at intermission, but he doubled that on Kansas City s first possession of the second half. Using his big weapons in TE Tony Gonzalez and WR Dwayne Bowe, Huard went four for seven for 70 yards, setting up Rayner for a 49-yard field goal to cut the defecit to The Chiefs defense forced a punt on the Vikings ensuing possession and the passing game went back to work. Huard hit Bowe for a 15-yard gain on the first play, then found Gonzalez for 15 yards on a third down moments later. After another 17- yard catch by Bowe, the first-round pick outleaped CB Cedric Griffin and snatched a brilliant 16-yard TD pass in the corner of end zone. Bowe s second career TD gave the Chiefs their first lead of 2007 season at early in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs defense needed two more stands to make the lead hold up, but answered the call on both occasions. In total, KC sacked Holcomb 5.0 times and held Minnesota to 252 total yards and only 129 passing yards in the win. 5 GAME 4 Chiefs 30, Chargers 16 September 30, 2007 Qualcomm Stadium 65,175 KANSAS CITY SAN DIEGO The Chiefs rebounded from three different 10-point deficits before scoring the game s final 24 points en route to a victory. Kansas City scored a defensive TD for the first time since 2005, while rookie WR Dwayne Bowe enjoyed a breakout performance in a game that marked the 50th regular season victory for head coach Herm Edwards. San Diego opened the game with 10 points on its first two possessions. First, a 12-play scoring drive resulted in a 24-yard K Nate Kaeding field goal. Next, QB Philip Rivers completed passes to three different players before RB LaDainian Tomlinson scored on a five-yard TD run. The defense gave the Chiefs their first positive boost as S Jarrad Page recovered a fumble at the San Diego 22-yard line. Kansas City pounded RB Larry Johnson seven times for 19 yards before coming up just short of the end zone. K Dave Rayner would boot a 21-yard field goal to pull Kansas City within The two teams would alternate field goals in the second quarter as Kaeding sandwiched three-pointers from 51 and 38 yards around a 25-yarder from Rayner. That kicking competition put the score at 16-6 at intermission. Kansas City started to chip away at the Chargers lead early in the third quarter with another Rayner field goal, this time from 41 yards out, making the count LB Derrick Johnson intercepted the second Rivers pass of the afternoon, setting the Chiefs up on the San Diego 36-yard line. From there Huard hit Johnson for a 14-yard pick up, then watched TE Tony Gonzalez out-jump two defenders for a 22- yard TD tying the game at late in the third quarter. Huard and the Chiefs offense stayed on the attack minutes later. After a 19-yard gain from Gonzalez, rookie WR Dwayne Bowe caught a slant pass, spun out of a tackle and raced for a 51-yard touchdown. Bowe s third consecutive game with a TD reception gave him eight catches for 164 yards, the highest single-game receiving yardage tally by a rookie in franchise history. The Chiefs put the game on ice when Johnson made his second big defensive play by sacking Rivers and knocking the ball loose, allowing rookie CB Tyron Brackenridge to execute the scoop-and-score. Brackenridge raced 50 yards for the touchdown and gave the Chiefs a lead with 7:37 left to play. The Chargers would threaten to score once more, but as they faced a fourth-and-goal from the five-yard line Page made a diving pass break-up to give the ball back to Kansas City on downs with only 3:41 left in regulation. With a 37-yard run, Johnson would run the clock out and seal the Chiefs win. GAME NOTES The Chiefs became just the sixth road team since 90 to bounce back from a double-digit deficit to produce a doubledigit victory. With his 123-yard rushing performance, RB Larry Johnson moved into sole possession of the Chiefs record with 25 career 100-yard games. SD Kaeding, 24-yard field goal (12-66, 6:41). 6 GAME 5 Jaguars 17, Chiefs 7 October 7, 2007 Arrowhead Stadium 76,917 JACKSONVILLE KANSAS CITY For the fifth straight week the Chiefs dug themselves into a first-half hole, but unlike the previous two games they were unable to climb out against Jacksonville. The Jaguars used a ball-control offense and a defense that crowded the line of scrimmage to jump out to a 10-0 halftime lead before registering a 17-7 win at Arrowhead Stadium. Jacksonville came into the game with a simple recipe: establish the run, stop the run and protect the football. They executed that plan to perfection, dominating the time of possession by a 36:43- to-23:17 margin and outrushing the Chiefs by a yardage total of 156 to 10. A lightning-quick first quarter unfolded with a grand total of two possessions, one from each team. Kansas City started fast, taking the opening kickoff and marching 64 yards to the Jaguars 11-yard line. QB Damon Huard completed passes to four different receivers including a 30-yard pickup to TE Kris Wilson on the opening play. However, on third-and-11 from the 13-yard line, Huard s pass was knocked down at the line of scrimmage. K Dave Rayner then pushed the subsequent field goal try wide left, leaving the score tied at 0-0. The Jaguars responded with a drive that would gobble up the remainder of the first period, a methodical 18-play possession that consumed 10:55 off the clock, the second-longest drive in terms of elapsed time in Jaguars history. Using three third-down conversions including a 16-yard pass from QB David Garrard to WR Dennis Northcutt on third-and-15 Jacksonville covered 87 yards in 17 plays. The Chiefs defense would stiffen inside the 10-yard line, holding the Jaguars to a 20-yard field goal. The Chiefs would move the ball again on their second drive of the game with two first-down passes to TE Tony Gonzalez, but the march stalled near midfield. Jacksonville wouldn t take nearly as long to light up the scoreboard on its second try as RB Maurice Jones-Drew broke off a 52-yard touchdown run for a 10-0 lead midway through the second quarter. The second half opened with six straight punts three from each team before the Jaguars went on the attack again. A 40-yard pass from Garrard to Northcutt moved them down to the KC 15-yard line. Five plays later on third-and-goal from the three-yard line, Garrard slung a touchdown pass to Northcutt for a commanding 17-0 lead with 8:26 remaining in the game. Garrard s squad finished the game converting eight of 15 third downs (53.3%). After Huard left the game in the fourth quarter with a shoulder contusion, second-year QB Brodie Croyle stepped under center looking to avoid the shutout. The Chiefs went three-and-out in his first possession, but he rallied the troops on the game s final drive. Croyle completed a fourth-down pass to rookie RB Kolby Smith to keep the chains moving, then launched a 35-yard pass to WR Dwayne Bowe down to the Jacksonville 13-yard line. Following three incomplete passes, Croyle floated a touchdown pass to WR Samie Parker on the game s final offensive play to avoid the shutout and complete the scoring at GAME NOTES With eight catches for 100 yards, TE Tony Gonzalez tied WR Otis Taylor for the Chiefs career record with his 19th 100-yard receiving game. 7 GAME 6 Chiefs 27, Bengals 20 October 14, 2007 Arrowhead Stadium 76,846 CINCINNATI KANSAS CITY The Chiefs pulled back to 3-3 on the season thanks to a well-balanced win over the Cincinnati Bengals at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City forced three turnovers and held the Bengals offense to just one-of-11 on third down, while the offense helped TE Tony Gonzalez reach the top of the NFL record books. En route to a 102-yard receiving day, Gonzalez became the NFL s all-time TD leader among tight ends with 64 scoring catches. For the initial time this season, the Chiefs scored first with a 32-yard K Dave Rayner field goal. Kansas City s early lead was short-lived however as the Bengals offense answered right back. Cincinnati took a 7-3 lead in just four plays as QB Carson Palmer threw a 42-yard TD pass to WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh. The momentum quickly swung back in the Chiefs direction when DE Jared Allen made his first of several big plays on the day. On third down from the Bengals 16-yard line, Allen and DE Tamba Hali combined to sack Palmer, forcing a punt and giving Kansas City great field position. RB Larry Johnson broke off a 20-yard run to get inside the Red Zone. Then, from the three-yard line, QB Damon Huard connected with Gonzalez for the tight end s 63rd career touchdown, placing him first in NFL history among tight ends. Gonzalez s record-setting score also put the Chiefs back in front 10-7 late in the first quarter. Back on the defensive side of the ball Allen was at it again, this time sacking Palmer and forcing a fumble to give the Chiefs the ball at the Cincinnati 45-yard line. Johnson looked as though he would add to the Chiefs lead as he broke a 34-yard run, but had the ball ripped out at the one-yard line by CB Deltha O Neal. The fumble then bounced out the back of the end zone for a Bengals touchback. Johnson s fumble snapped a streak of 471 consecutive touches (rushes and rec.) without a fumble, a mark that stood as the longest active streak in the NFL until that play. Johnson would find the end zone moments later after a CB Patrick Surtain INT. Two completions from Huard set up Johnson for an eight-yard TD run, giving the Chiefs a 17-7 lead. Kansas City added on another Rayner field goal just before halftime to take a 20-7 lead into the locker room. After a scoreless third quarter, the two teams combined for 20 fourth-quarter points. Despite the scoring flurry, the Chiefs never allowed the Bengals to get closer than a touchdown. Cincinnati booted a 33-yard field goal at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Chiefs answered with another score by their Pro Bowl tight end. A 26-yard Huard-to-Gonzalez TD pass stretched the Kansas City lead to with 8:03 left in the game. The Bengals would try to make it interesting late as Palmer went to a no-huddle offense and found success. He completed four passes on the ensuing drive including a 30-yard scoring strike to Houshmanzadeh that cut the Chiefs lead to with just over 5:00 remaining. The last few minutes became a little intense as the Chiefs were unable to run out the clock on two late possessions. That gave the Bengals a chance to creep closer as a 36-yard field goal brought them within seven points with 0:18 remaining. However, an onside kick effort bounced right into the arms of Chiefs S Jarrad Page icing the victory for Kansas City. KC Rayner, 32-yard field goal (12-49, 5:21). 8 GAME 7 Chiefs 12, Raiders 10 October 21, 2007 McAfee Coliseum 62,240 KANSAS CITY OAKLAND Adding yet another nailbiting chapter to the Chiefs-Raiders rivalry, Kansas City slugged out a win at McAfee Coliseum. Clinging to a two-point lead with under a minute remaining, S Jarrad Page intercepted Raiders QB Daunte Culpepper to seal the win and help the Chiefs become the first franchise to ever defeat the Raiders nine straight times. On the game s opening drive, Kansas City marched down the field to get on the scoreboard first. QB Damon Huard hit WR Dwayne Bowe for a 22-yard pickup and found TE Tony Gonzalez for 20 more yards on the possession. K Dave Rayner would convert a 41-yard FG when the drive stalled giving Kansas City a 3-0 lead. Oakland forced Kansas City to punt late in the first quarter, but as CB Chris Carr called for a fair catch, his teammate CB Nnamdi Asomugha ran into him. The ball hit Asomugha in the back of the leg and Chiefs S Jon McGraw recovered the loose ball. The Chiefs capitalized with another Rayner field goal for a 6-0 advantage. With Oakland poised to answer, the Chiefs defense made a pivotal stand. On fourth-and-one from the Kansas City 17-yard line, DT Alfonso Boone stopped Oakland RB LaMont Jordan for no gain, turning the ball over on downs. After taking a 6-0 lead into the locker room at the half, Kansas City looked poised to add some breathing room to its margin as RB Larry Johnson broke off a career-long 54-yard run. However, after an 18-yard pass to Gonzalez, the Chiefs offense could move the ball no closer. Rayner had made his first two field goals of the afternoon, but hooked a 30-yard attempt wide left. On the first play of the Raiders ensuing possession, Culpepper hit WR Jerry Porter for a 59-yard gain. On the very next snap he found WR Ronald Curry in the back of the end zone for a 21-yard scoring strike. The sudden momentum change put the Raiders ahead 7-6 late in the third quarter. The Chiefs offense responded with a big play of its own early in the fourth quarter. Huard ducked under a would-be sack from DT Warren Sapp and scrambled left where he lofted a 58-yard strike to Bowe down to the Oakland 16-yard line. Six plays later Johnson finished the drive with a one-yard scoring plunge with 11:30 left in the game. The Chiefs failed on a two-point conversion to make it a seven-point game, but they maintained a five-point lead at Oakland appeared to have a scoring answer of its own as it took the ensuing drive 51 yards to the Chiefs 19-yard line, but a first-down holding call put the Raiders in a hole from which they couldn t escape. Oakland had to settle for a 37-yard K Sebastian Janikowski field goal to cut the score to with 5:53 left to play in regulation. Kansas City burned 4:00 off the clock, but would give the Raiders the ball back at their own 26-yard line with 1:46 left. After Culpepper completed three consecutive passes to push the ball to the Oakland 41-yard line, Page made the play of the day. For the second year in a row the Oakland area native made a game-clinching interception vs. the Raiders, this time preserving the win. GAME NOTES RB Priest Holmes made his return to the field for the first time since playing in a contest at San Diego (10/30/05), a span of 721 days. KC Rayner, 41-yard field goal (10-57, 4:20). 9 GAME 8 Packers 33, Chiefs 22 November 4, 2007 Arrowhead Stadium 78,988 GREEN BAY KANSAS CITY What began as a defensive slugfest between the Chiefs and Packers turned into a fourth-quarter shootout at Arrowhead. Trailing 13-7 after three quarters, the Chiefs didn t have enough answers to match Packers QB Brett Favre as both teams combined for 35 fourth-quarter points with Green Bay winning a wild decision. Favre checked the final team off of his win list joining QBs Tom Brady and Peyton Manning as the only other signal callers to defeat all 31 other NFL franchises by throwing for 360 yards and two TDs on the afternoon. Green Bay mounted a 6-0 lead thanks to a pair of K Mason Crosby field goals in the second quarter. CB Benny Sapp made the Chiefs first big play, intercepting Favre and returning it to the Green Bay 30-yard line just before halftime. A defensive pass interference penalty in the end zone set up a one-yard TD dive from RB Larry Johnson. Despite being outgained 181 to 62 in total yards, the Chiefs held an improbable 7-6 lead at halftime. Green Bay LB A.J. Hawk intercepted a QB Damon Huard third-quarter pass setting up a 13-yard TD pass from Favre to WR Greg Jennings for a 13-7 Packers lead. Green Bay s TD sparked the Chiefs offense as KC answered with its first prolonged drive. Huard first completed passes of 17 and nine yards to TE Tony Gonzalez. Then Huard slipped a screen pass out to Johnson who was wide open in the left flat. Thirty yards later Johnson was still running, turning the short pass into a TD as the Chiefs took a lead. Not to be outdown, Favre hit WR Donald Driver on an incredible 44-yard pass on the very next play, moving the Packers down to the KC 16-yard line. The Chiefs relinquished just a 32-yard Crosby field goal as the Packers regained a lead with just under nine minutes to go. The Chiefs would bounce right back with a six-play, 82-yard scoring march. Johnson got the drive jump-started with 19 yards on the first two plays, but suffered a right foot injury on the second play forcing him to the leave the game. A 25-yard defensive pass interference call on CB Charles Woodson would move Kansas City to the GB 17-yard line. From there Huard whizzed a TD pass to Gonzalez, giving the Chiefs a lead. RB Priest Holmes would convert the two-point conversion on a dive over the pile to push the lead to with 5:18 remaining. That was too much time for Favre. Three straight short completions gave way to a 60-yard touchdown bomb to Jennings, who ran untouched through the Chiefs secondary. The throw was particularly impressive considering Favre delivered the ball off of his back foot and hit the receiver in stride. The sixth lead change of the game gave the Packers a advantage that they would never relinquish. Kansas City appeared to be firing right back when Huard hit WR Jeff Webb down the sideline for a 36-yard gain. However a Packers challenge overturned the completion, ruling that Webb s second foot come down out of bounds. The Chiefs would be forced to punt and gave up another field goal on the ensuing possession. Trailing by four with 1:40 remaining, the stage was set for a comeback drive by Kansas City, but it was not to be. On the third play, Huard was picked off by Woodson near midfield and the interception was returned for the game-clinching touchdown, sealing the Packers win. 10 GAME 9 Broncos 27, Chiefs 11 November 11, 2007 Arrowhead Stadium 77,368 DENVER KANSAS CITY A precious opportunity to gain a leg up on the entire AFC West slipped away in a devastating two-minute span for the Chiefs. Instead of having a win over all three divisional foes, Kansas City dropped a decision to the Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium. Clinging to an 8-6 halftime lead, Kansas City turned the ball over on its first two possessions of the second half and watched Denver convert them into a quick 14 points. The Chiefs would never recover. A pair of first-quarter field goals dotted the scoring early on. The Broncos took the opening kickoff and marched 42 yards in eight plays before converting a 44-yard K Jason Elam field goal. The Chiefs then capitalized on an interception by LB Derrick Johnson as K Dave Rayner knocked in a 38-yard attempt. S Bernard Pollard gave the Chiefs a special teams boost early in the second quarter. Following a CB Karl Paymah interception, the Broncos were backed up at their own two-yard line. A threeand-out series forced P Todd Sauerbrun to punt from the back of his end zone, where Pollard beat his man and blocked the kick out the back of the end zone for a safety. Pollard s third career blocked punt gave the Chiefs their first lead of the day 5-3. KC came up empty following the ensuing free kick and saw Denver regain the lead moments later. QB Jay Cutler converted a pair of third-and-longs with completions to WRs Brandon Marshall and Brandon Stokley, setting up an Elam 50-yard try that hit the crossbar and bounced through for a 6-5 Denver lead. QB Damon Huard would lead the Chiefs on an 11-play, 57- yard scoring drive to retake the lead before halftime. Huard hit TE Tony Gonzalez for 10 yards before back-to-back strikes to WR Dwayne Bowe (nine catches for 105 yards) moved them into field goal range. Rayner s 36-yard field goal gave KC an 8-6 lead, which it would take into the half. The second half got off to a disastrous start for Huard and the Chiefs. Huard was picked off by CB Dre Bly on the opening possession of the third quarter, giving Denver the ball at the KC 31-yard line. The visitors would need just three plays to break RB Selvin Young into the open for a 20-yard TD run and a 13-8 lead. Then on the very next play from scrimmage, Huard was sacked and stripped by DE Elvis Dumervil at the 17-yard line. LB Nate Webster scooped up the loose ball and ran it in to the end zone for the Broncos second score in the half s opening 1:30. Trailing 20-8, QB Brodie Croyle would enter the game after Huard was injured on the Dumervil sack. Croyle would promptly convert three consecutive third downs with passes to his receiving trio of Bowe, WR Eddie Kennison and WR Samie Parker. The drive would stall at the Denver 20-yard line and Rayner would make his third field goal of the day to make the count late in the third quarter. Kansas City tried to make it a one-score game a few minutes later, but a 53-yard field goal try from Rayner hooked wide left. Cutler used the short field to increase the lead, bootlegging into a 18-yard TD pass to TE Daniel Graham to stake a commanding lead with 10:44 remaining. Croyle and the Chiefs would have three more possessions before the final gun, but were unable to cut into the lead on any of the three tries. On Kansas City s final drive Croyle completed five passes and marched the team down to the Denver threeyard line, but a sack on fourth-and-goal solidified the Broncos win. 11 GAME 10 Colts 13, Chiefs 10 November 18, 2007 RCA Dome 57,294 KANSAS CITY INDIANAPOLIS The last time the Chiefs traveled to Indianapolis, they left with a bitter taste in their mouths after losing an AFC Wild Card Playoff match. This time the palette wasn t any sweeter as KC dropped a decision to the Colts. Despite an inspired defensive effort from the Chiefs, Indianapolis and QB Peyton Manning had just enough bullets to pull off the victory. Kansas City limited the Colts to just 73 total yards in a first half that ended in a 3-3 tie. DE Jared Allen would bat down four of Manning s passes, with one leading to an INT. The Chiefs held the Indianapolis high-flying offense to a mere 216 yards, the lowest ouput by the Colts since the 2004 campaign. On the other side of the ball, the Chiefs outgained Indy with 234 total yards of their own, but it wasn t enough to pull off the upset in QB Brodie Croyle s first NFL start. The Chiefs dodged a pair of Colts bullets early on as K Adam Vinatieri misfired on a pair of first-quarter field goals. His 49-yard attempt sailed wide left on the first drive, then after WR Eddie Kennison fumbled a punt return, Vinatieri again hooked a 38-yard try to the left keeping the game scoreless after one quarter. Kansas City had its own kicking troubles on its first prolonged drive. After the Chiefs converted three first downs, K Dave Rayner missed a 43-yard field goal attempt wide left. However, on the very next play, Allen tipped Manning s pass at the line of scrimmage and S Jarrad Page intercepted it at the Colts 37-yard line. This time Rayner was able to capitalize, banging through a 47-yard FG for a 3-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Indianapolis would get its second turnover deep inside Chiefs territory when Croyle was sacked and stripped by DE Robert Mathis, giving the Colts the ball at the KC 13-yard line. Once again the Chiefs defense stiffened and allowed only a 27-yard FG, tying the game at 3-3. As well as the Chiefs defense was playing, everyone knew the Colts offense would rally at some point. That point came on their second possession of the third quarter as Manning and RB Joseph Addai led a nine-play, 64-yard TD drive. Manning completed all four of his pass attempts and Addai rattled off 35 yards on the ground, including a three-yard TD run up the middle for a 10-3 Indianapolis lead. KC would answer behind the arm of its new starting QB, rattling off an 11-play, 77-yard scoring drive late in the third quarter. Croyle completed passes of 12 and 18 yards to WR Dwayne Bowe and TE Tony Gonzalez to reach the Indy 19-yard line. Croyle then floated a TD pass to Bowe in the deep corner of the end zone to tie the game at The Colts challenged that Bowe caught the ball in bounds, but the ruling on the field and consequently the TD stood. Both clubs would exchange four punts before Manning and the Colts went back to work. Working from their own 33-yard line with 6:59 left, Manning hit four consecutive first-down passes before Addai was stopped short on third down at the Chiefs three-yard line. Instead of kicking a go-ahead FG, Indy ran a QB sneak on fourth-and-one with Manning picking up just enough for a first down. With KC out of timeouts, Indianapolis would kneel three times and watch Vinatieri chip in a 24-yard FG to take a lead with just three seconds left in the game. Kansas City had one last desperation play from the 40-yard line, but a short pass and two subsequent laterals came up short, putting the final touch on the Colts win. 12 GAME 11 Raiders 20, Chiefs 17 November 25, 2007 Arrowhead Stadium 76,210 OAKLAND KANSAS CITY It had to end sometime. The Chiefs had string of nine consecutive wins over the Raiders snapped in a loss at Arrowhead Stadium. For the fourth straight week Kansas City found itself ahead or tied at halftime, and for the fourth consecutive game the Chiefs were out-matched in the second half en route to a loss. Rookie RB Kolby Smith was thrust into his first career start and despite owning just 10 NFL carries prior to kickoff, Smith posted the biggest game of the year for a Chiefs ball carrier. The fifth-round pick toted the ball 31 times for 150 yards with a pair of TDs, registering the fifth-highest rushing yardage total by a rookie in Chiefs history. Following a 25-yard FG from K Sebastian Janikowski on Oakland s opening drive, Smith took over Kansas City s second possession. He pounded out 61 yards on seven carries, capping the drive with a 10-yard TD run to give Kansas City a 7-3 lead. Oakland worked the ball into Chiefs territory on its first three possessions, but came away with just a pair of field goals. Janikowski s first field goal was set up by a CB Michael Huff INT at the Chiefs 26-yard line. Janikowski would then convert a 54-yard field goal early after a short punt gave the Raiders field position in KC territory. K Dave Rayner would stretch the Chiefs lead to 10-6 at halftime with a 30-yard field goal midway through the second quarter. The Raiders was take a third-quarter lead thanks to an eight-play, 65-yard drive scoring drive. A 25-yard QB Daunte Culpepper-to-WR Jerry Porter connection moved Oakland into Chiefs territory and set up RB LaMont Jordan s five-yard TD run to put the Raiders back in front The Chiefs would bounce back with a touchdown drive of their own. Sparked by a 22-yard completion to TE Tony Gonzalez on third down, Kansas City traveled 63 yards in nine plays. Smith would help the Chiefs take a lead with a five-yard TD run late in the third quarter. Oakland would go three-and-out on its next possession, and the Chiefs looked to stretch their lead on the ensuing possession but Rayner s 33-yard field goal attempt missed left and the Raiders took advantage. In just three plays, Oakland ripped off 77 yards and retook the lead. Culpepper hit TE Zach Miller for 28 yards, then WR Jerry Porter for 35 yards to the KC 14. From there, RB Justin Fargas scampered in for a touchdown, giving the Raiders a lead with 9:40 remaining. The game had the makings of another classic Raiders-Chiefs last-minute finish when Kansas City took the ensuing kickoff and marched into Oakland territory. Faced with fourth-and-one from the 23, Kansas City eschewed an attempt at a game-tying field goal and opted to go for it. When Smith was tackled for a oneyard loss, 4:22 still remained, but the game was all but over. Three first down runs from Fargas would help Oakland run out the clock on a win and snap its 17-game AFC West losing streak. GAME NOTES RB Kolby Smith s 31 rushing attempts were the most by a rookie in a game in franchise history, breaking the previous rookie mark of 30 carries established by RB Woody Green vs. the N.Y. Giants (11/3/74). Smith became the first Chiefs rookie to register two rushing TDs in a game since RB Billy Jackson did it vs. Seattle (11/22/81). OAK Janikowski, 25-yard field goal (5-19, 2:26). 13 GAME 12 Chargers 24, Chiefs 10 December 2, 2007 Arrowhead Stadium 74,874 SAN DIEGO KANSAS CITY Tied or leading at halftime for the fifth straight week this time knotted up at at the intermission the Chiefs once again couldn t keep pace in the second half falling to the Chargers by a count at Arrowhead Stadium. With QB Brodie Croyle sidelined due to a back injury, QB Damon Huard returned to the starting spot and found a streaking TE Tony Gonzalez for a 24-yard gain to start the Chiefs first drive. RB Kolby Smith then turned out a 15-yard run setting up newlysigned K John Carney for a 38-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead. After the Chargers went three-and-out on their first possession, San Diego found room on its second drive. RB LaDainian Tomlinson broke off a 25-yard run before QB Philip Rivers found an open WR Chris Chambers for a 37-yard gain inside the Red Zone. Kansas City s defense would stiffen and limit the Chargers to a game-tying 25-yard field goal. Kansas City would squander good field position on backto-back possessions late in the first quarter. First, CB Ty Law intercepted Rivers at the SD 40-yard line, but Huard would give it right back when CB Antonio Cromartie picked him off in the end zone two plays later. Then the Chiefs failed to capitalize on a short punt that gave them the ball at the SD 44-yard line minutes later. DE Jared Allen was the catalyst for the Chiefs defense in the first half piling up 2.0 sacks and constantly harassing Rivers. On this day, Allen sparked the offense too, capping a 10-play drive with a two-yard TD catch. Lined up at a tackle eligible position, Allen ran a fade pattern into the corner of the end zone and caught an over-the-shoulder pass from Huard. Allen s first career touchdown would give the Chiefs a 10-3 lead midway through the second quarter. The lead would not last for long as a short ensuing kickoff gave the Chargers the ball at their 49-yard line. Moments later off play action, Rivers hit WR Vincent Jackson for a 38-yard TD to tie the game at The second half was all Tomlinson. On the Chargers first drive of the third quarter Tomlinson broke free up the middle and scored on a 31-yard touchdown run for San Diego s first lead of the day at The Chiefs looked to answer thanks to a pair of first down runs from Smith and a Huard-to-Gonzalez pass down to the San Diego 28-yard line. However, the drive would stall as Huard s fourth-down pass fell incomplete. The score would remain into the fourth quarter when Tomlinson struck again. Following a Chiefs-record 81-yard punt from P Dustin Colquitt, the Chargers Pro Bowl back ripped off a 34-yard run to take the ball across midfield. Three plays later on third-and-one, Tomlinson broke through the line of scrimmage contain and galloped 28 yards for his second TD of the game. San Diego would take a lead with 10:20 left in the game. The Chargers brought relentless pressure on Huard, sacking him 7.0 times, forcing a fumble and intercepting him twice en route to knocking him out of the game in the fourth quarter. Rookie QB Tyler Thigpen would see his first NFL action replacing Huard, but the Chiefs would get no closer, falling GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez finished the game with 10 catches for 140 yards, moving him into a tie for second in NFL history among tight ends with his 22nd career 100-yard game. 14 GAME 13 Broncos 41, Chiefs 7 December 9, 2007 INVESCO Field at Mile High 75,895 KANSAS CITY DENVER The Chiefs haven t had many pleasant memories of INVESCO Field at Mile High and their latest trip did nothing to change that. Kansas City struggled on both sides of the ball en route to a disastrous 41-7 loss. The contest marked the largest margin of victory by Denver in the 48-year history of the series. The lopsided affair began from the game s very first possession. Denver took the opening kickoff and marched 77 yards in just four plays, scoring on a 21-yard pass from QB Jay Cutler to WR Brandon Stokley. Rookie RB Selvin Young gashed Kansas City for a 50-yard dash to set up the 7-0 lead. Things only got worse as the Broncos scored another touchdown minutes later. After the Chiefs went three-and-out, Denver went 84 yards on seven plays on its way to a one-yard touchdown run by RB Travis Henry. Cutler completed passes of 28 and 22 yards on the drive as the Broncos held a 14-0 lead just 7:47 into the game. With their backs against the wall Herm Edwards troops would show a bit of resiliency late in the first quarter. The Chiefs defense forced back-to-back three-and-outs and the offense came alive under pressure. Kansas City converted three straight fourth downs, the third coming on a 22-yard pass from QB Brodie Croyle to WR Dwayne Bowe on fourth-and-13. From there, Croyle hit TE Tony Gonzalez in the left flat and watched the Pro Bowler slip two would-be tacklers and score a 15-yard touchdown to bring the Chiefs within seven midway through the second quarter. The Chiefs used 15 plays on the drive and took 8:51 off the clock. However, that would be the last bit of hope for the Red and Gold. Whatever momentum the Chiefs had built was extinguished on the very next possession. Denver went back on the offensive attack ripping off 71 yards on seven plays, scoring on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Cutler to WR Brandon Marshall. The Broncos would tack on a 37-yard K Jason Elam field goal just before halftime to take a 24-7 lead at the break. Things would snowball in the third quarter as Denver posted 17 unanswered points on an Elam field goal and Cutler touchdown passes to TE Daniel Graham and Marshall. Denver s 41-7 lead would hold up as the final score. GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez registered his 800th career reception, joining TE Shannon Sharpe (815) as the only other player at that position to have 800 or more career receptions. WR Dwayne Bowe broke the Chiefs single-season rookie records for both receptions (56) and receiving yardage (821). RB Abner Haynes (55 catches) and E Chris Burford (789 yards) set the previous Chiefs rookie receiving marks during the franchise s inaugural season in 60. 15 GAME 14 Titans 26, Chiefs 17 December 16, 2007 Arrowhead Stadium 74,976 TENNESSEE KANSAS CITY Staying with a frustrating pattern, second-half ineffectiveness doomed the Chiefs to a loss to the Titans in the Arrowhead Stadium season finale. A promising start that saw Kansas City mount a halftime lead dissolved after intermission as Tennessee racked up the game s final 13 points. QB Vince Young connected with WR Roydell Williams for a 16-yard touchdown on the game s opening drive, but the Chiefs defense tightened after that forcing punts on the Titans next two possessions. Kansas City s offense would get going in the second quarter as RB Kolby Smith and QB Brodie Croyle heated up. Smith pounded out 24 yards to move the Chiefs inside the Titans 30-yard line. Croyle then hit WR Eddie Kennison on a 17-yard pass before finding WR Samie Parker for a 10-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. Tennessee would tack on a K Rob Bironas field goal thanks to a muffed punt return by Chiefs WR Eddie Drummond at the KC 21-yard line. The Titans 10-7 lead wouldn t hold up long as Kansas City answered with a 14-play scoring drive. The Chiefs mixed up the play calling to march down to the Tennessee 33- yard line. Croyle then found WR Dwayne Bowe for a 14-yard gain on fourth-and-seven to keep the drive alive. After another first down pass to Bowe, Croyle threw his second touchdown pass of the day, this time a nine-yard pass to TE Kris Wilson, who carried two would-be tacklers into the end zone with him. The Chiefs would take that lead into halftime. The Titans opened the second half by forcing a punt and knocking in a 37-yard field goal on the ensuing attempt. A 35- yard pass from Young to Roydell Williams was the big play on the drive. KC would answer with a field goal of its own to move their lead back to Croyle completed passes to five different receivers to overcome three holding penalties on the 14-play, 59-yard drive. Croyle s third-down pass fell incomplete from the Tennessee 17-yard line, forcing a 36-yard field goal from K John Carney. Tennessee would take back the lead moments later as a kickoff out of bounds set the Titans up at the 40-yard line. It took Young just three plays to find the end zone as he hit Williams down the sideline for a 41-yard touchdown pass to go ahead late in the third quarter. Rookie S Michael Griffin picked off Croyle on the next play from scrimmage giving the Titans golden field position at the Chiefs 30-yard line. Kansas City dodged a bullet, however, as a Tennessee touchdown was called back on the holding penalty. Bironas third field goal of the afternoon pushed the lead to Things didn t get any better for the Chiefs in the fourth quarter. In only two possessions, Kansas City managed just three first downs and its longest drive ended with an interception at the Tennessee 27-yard line. The Titans would add one final field goal to ice the win. GAME NOTES The Chiefs converted 11 of their 17 third-down attempts (64.7%), the club s best mark of the season and the team s highest conversion percentage since going nine of 13 (69.2%) at Cleveland (12/3/06). 16 GAME 15 Lions 25, Chiefs 20 December 23, 2007 Ford Field 59,938 KANSAS CITY DETROIT A day after sitting on a charter flight for nearly seven hours waiting out a snowstorm, the Chiefs began the game slowly. After watching the Lions build a 19-0 lead, Kansas City rallied to get within two points at before eventually falling at Ford Field in Detroit. The Lions would score in all three phases of the game in the early going. First, an eight-play, 80-yard scoring drive concluded with an 11-yard scoring run from RB T.J. Duckett. Then, P Dustin Colquitt had a punt blocked for the first time in his career as Lions TE Casey FitzSimmons broke through the middle of the line to bat down the kick. The ball would spin out of the end zone for a safety as the Lions took a 9-0 lead. Detroit K Jason Hanson knocked in a 46-yard field goal on the ensuing possession to push the Lions ahead Before the scoring binge was over, Detroit LB Paris Lenon intercepted a QB Brodie Croyle pass and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown to take a 19-0 lead midway through the second stanza. To make matters worse, Croyle injured his throwing hand on the play while trying to make a TD-saving tackle. With KC s starting signal caller unable to return, QB Damon Huard stepped under center and began leading the comeback. Despite losing T Damion McIntosh and RB Kolby Smith to injuries on the drive, Huard and company orchestrated a 12- play, 80-yard touchdown drive. Newly-acquired RB Jackie Battle took over the running back duties and followed the lead of reserve T Herb Taylor to score a three-yard TD on his first NFL carry. Kansas City S Bernard Pollard gave the ball right back to the offense when he intercepted a QB Jon Kitna pass. The Chiefs converted the turnover into points as Huard perfectly executed the two-minute offense. Four straight completions including a 21-yard strike to TE Tony Gonzalez pushed the ball deep into Lions territory. After WR Dwayne Bowe converted a third-and-four with a catch down to the one-yard line, Huard floated a TD pass to DE Jared Allen. The Pro Bowler s second TD of the season helped Kansas City cut a 19-0 deficit to at the half. Detroit tacked on a 20-yard Hanson field goal in the third quarter before the Chiefs went on the attack again. Following an impressive 10-play, 70-yard drive, the Chiefs scored their first fourth-quarter points since posting 15 such points vs. Green Bay (11/4). Huard completed seven of seven passes including a 34-yard touchdown pass on fourth down in which Bowe outleapt a Detroit defender in the end zone. The Chiefs would attempt a two-point conversion in an effort to tie the game, but Huard s pass was knocked down at the line of scrimmage leaving the score A late Detroit field goal gave the Chiefs too little time to comeback as their final possession ended at the Detroit 30-yard line. GAME NOTES TE Tony Gonzalez posted his 23rd 100-yard receiving game with a 10-catch, 133-yard performance. Gonzalez went over the 1,000-yard receiving mark on the season, making him one of only four tight ends in NFL history with three 1,000-yard seasons. 17 GAME 16 N.Y. Jets 13, Chiefs 10 (OT) December 30, 2007 Giants Stadium 76,737 KANSAS CITY N.Y. JETS From a cold and rainy Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, Kansas City s 2007 season concluded with a overtime defeat to the N.Y. Jets. Trailing 10-3 late in the fourth quarter, QB Brodie Croyle rallied the Chiefs to force overtime, but the Jets ground game was too strong in the extra period. The Jets would win the coin toss and orchestrate an 11-play, 45-yard drive, setting up a 43-yard FG from K Mike Nugent to provide the winning margin. Defense ruled a scoreless first quarter as neither club was able to move the ball with consistency. The Chiefs went threeand-out on their first three possessions, while the Jets were held scoreless on their first three possessions. The Jets dug into their bag of tricks to set up the game s first score. RB Leon Washington took a direct snap and then threw on the run to WR Wallace Wright for a 36-yard gain down to the Chiefs eight-yard line. Then after DE Jared Allen s second sack (which gave him 15.5 on the season, KC s highest total since LB Derrick Thomas led the league with 20.0 sacks in 90), New York converted third-and-goal from the 15-yard line. RB Thomas Jones took a shovel pass from QB Kellen Clemens and weaved into the end zone for a TD. Kansas City crossed misfield on its next two possessions, with the second trip resulting in points. WR Eddie Drummond returned a Jets punt 22 yards to the NYJ 39-yard line. A Croyleto-Jeff Webb 11-yard pass set up K John Carney s 40-yard field goal cutting the Jets lead to 7-3 late in the second quarter. Nugent would answer with a 27-yard field goal just before halftime to move New York ahead 10-3 at the break. The second half was filled with the two clubs trading punt for punt. The Chiefs limited the Jets to just one first down in the third quarter, but could muster very little offensively. Kansas City crossed midfield twice, but punted on both occasions. Perhaps the only offensive highlight for the Chiefs during the third quarter was Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez becoming the all-time receptions leader among NFL tight ends, catching his 816th pass on a 17-yard completion from Croyle. Croyle and company finally came alive midway through the fourth quarter. With just 95 total passing yards up to that point, Croyle got in rhythm connecting on six of eight passes for 81 yards on the drive. After a 16-yard pass to WR Samie Parker brought KC down to the Jets 35-yard line, Croyle lofted a 26- yard touchdown pass to Webb to tie the game at with 2:59 remaining in regulation. Both offenses would get one more crack at winning the game, but the defenses held and forced the Chiefs first overtime game of the season. The Jets, who had done next to nothing in the second half, promptly rattled off four first downs on the opening possession of overtime. A 13-yard pass to Cotchery and a 10-yard run from Jones moved New York down to the KC 34-yard line. Nine more yards from Jones set up Nugent for a would-be gamewinning field goal attempt from 33 yards out. Nugent s kick sailed through, but a holding penalty on the Jets delayed their celebration for a moment. Unfazed, Nugent nailed the 43-yard field goal try through the uprights giving the Jets the win. GAME NOTES Gonzalez set an NFL record for tight ends, owning 820 career receptions. He already established the tight end touchdown record (66). NYJ T.
