NATIONAL RADIO: CBS Radio/Westwood One Dick Enberg, Bob Trumpy and Bonnie Bernstein. RADIO: KCFX-FM (101.1) Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson, Bob Gretz and Bill Grigsby. THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs will make their first playoff appearance since 2003 when Kansas City travels to Indianapolis for an AFC Wild Card Playoff Game at the RCA Dome on Saturday. The contest will mark Kansas City s first road postseason outing since an AFC Wild Card contest at Miami (12/31/94) and will be the initial playoff game in Chiefs history to ever be played indoors. Kansas City owns a two-game winning streak entering the playoffs. The Chiefs are coming off a victory vs. Jacksonville (12/31) in the club s regular season finale that helped propel Kansas City to a 9-7 regular season record and an invitation to the postseason. Herm Edwards is the initial head coach in Chiefs history to guide the franchise to the postseason in his first season at the franchise s helm. Edwards has now led two different clubs (Chiefs and Jets) to the playoffs in his first season with those teams, becoming just the fifth coach in NFL history to accomplish such a feat. Edwards has now compiled four playoff berths in six seasons as an NFL head coach. Edwards will square off against his longtime friend Tony Dungy. In the only previous postseason meeting between these two coaches, Edwards N.Y. Jets squad claimed a 41-0 victory vs. Indianapolis (1/4/03). Dungy s squad enters the 2006 postseason with a 12-4 record as Indianapolis claimed its fourth straight AFC South crown. Indianapolis has twice ventured to Arrowhead to knock a pair of 13-3 Kansas City squads out of the playoffs, doing it in AFC Divisional Playoff Games in both 95 and Indianapolis will become the fourth franchise the Chiefs have met three times in the postseason, joining Buffalo, Miami and Oakland. Kansas City will seek to avenge those two previous postseason setbacks against the Colts with an offense powered by the legs of twotime Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson, who set an NFL single-season record with 416 rushing attempts in 2006 and broke his own franchise singleseason rushing record with 1,789 yards. Johnson has also compiled a franchise-record yard rushing games in STATS AND NFL RANKINGS CHIEFS COLTS Total Offense (16) (3) Rush Offense (9) (18) Pass Offense (22) (2) Total Defense (16) (21) Rush Defense (18) (32) Pass Defense (18) (2) Turnover Ratio (10t) +5 (6t) Pts./Game (15) 26.7 (2t) Opp. Pts./Game (11t) 22.5 (23) THE SERIES Since the AFL-NFL merger in 70, the Chiefs and Colts have squared off 17 times in regular and postseason play, with Indianapolis holding a advantage. In regular season action, the Colts hold an 8-7 edge against Kansas City. Indianapolis also owns victories in the two previous postseason outings between the teams, a 10-7 victory at Arrowhead in a 95 AFC Divisional Playoff Game (1/7/96) and a win at Arrowhead in a 2003 AFC Divisional Playoff Game (1/11/04). The Chiefs won the most recent regular season meeting between the two clubs by a count at Arrowhead (10/31/04). CHIEFS VS. Kansas City claimed a 20-7 win in the team s first-ever meeting against the Indianapolis incarnation of the Colts on 11/24/85 and snapped a six-game losing streak against the franchise in The Chiefs are 0-2 on the road against the Colts since the team relocated in Indianapolis, with the Colts winning the last meeting by a count at the RCA Dome (11/7/99). The two AFC Divisional Playoff tilts in this series at Arrowhead are unquestionably the most memorable contests in Chiefs-Colts history. In both 2003 and 95, the Chiefs had a 13-3 campaign derailed by Indianapolis. For only the third time in NFL postseason history, neither team was forced to punt as the Colts registered a victory (1/11/04) despite a 92-yard KOR TD from WR Dante Hall and a franchise playoff record 176 rushing yards from RB Priest Holmes. Three Kansas City interceptions and three missed FGs doomed the Chiefs to a 10-7 setback (1/7/96) in a contest played with a -9 windchill as the Colts advanced to the AFC Championship Game at Pittsburgh (1/14/96) to come within a game of Super Bowl XXX.

Recognized as one of the greatest sportsmen in American history, Mr. Hunt served as the guiding force behind the formation of the American Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Mr. Hunt served as a positive influence on the game for 47 years. He was the first AFL figure to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 72, a remarkable feat considering he became involved in the game just 13 years earlier. Despite his many accomplishments and his induction into eight different Halls of Fame, Mr. Hunt s humility was one of his most unwavering and most endearing traits. The Chiefs wear an LH decal on their helmets to honor Mr. Hunt s memory. THE AFC POSTSEASON FIELD Team Opponent Of Note 1. San Diego (14-2) First-round bye Best record in team history. 2. 4 Chiefs Bounce Back From an 0-2 Start to Reach the Playoffs Under Coach Herm Edwards by Pete Moris Edwards Guides Another Team to the Postseason Herm Edwards is just the fifth head coach in NFL history to guide two different teams to the postseason in his first season at the helm of those franchises. Prior to leading KC to a playoff berth in 2006, he led the N.Y. Jets to the postseason in his inaugural season with that club in Edwards has now been to the postseason four times in his first six seasons as an NFL head coach. His most recent postseason victory was a OT decision in an AFC Wild Card Game at San Diego (1/8/05). COACHES TO LEAD TWO CLUBS TO PLAYOFFS, FIRST SEASON Herm Edwards 2001 N.Y. Kansas City was the only member of that group to bounce back and qualify for the playoffs. In the process, the Chiefs became just the fifth team since the start of the 2000 campaign to start a season at 0-2 and make the playoffs. This season marks the 15th postseason berth in Chiefs history, but only the third time in franchise annals that the club has qualified for the postseason after failing to win on Opening Day. The club previously accomplished that feat in 71 and 97. Dating back to the 90 season, the 2006 Chiefs are one of 18 clubs that have opened the season at 0-2 and have still qualified for postseason play. That group includes the 93 Cowboys and 2001 Patriots who both went on to win the Super Bowl after an 0-2 start. The Chiefs last road victory against the Colts was a decision at Baltimore (12/21/80). Indianapolis owns an impressive 32-8 (.800) regular season record at home under Tony Dungy. In fact, the Colts have won 20 of their last 21 regular season games at the RCA Dome with that lone blemish coming in the form of a setback vs. San Diego (12/26/04). However, Indianapolis is just 2-2 in postseason games at the RCA Dome, including a setback vs. Pittsburgh (1/15/06) in their most recent home playoff contest. The Colts won home playoff games vs. Denver in 2004 and The Turnover Table is Always Critical in the Postseason Dating back to 90, Kansas City owns an NFL-best +165 turnover differential, owning a league-high 570 takes and a league-low 405 gives among teams active for all of those seasons. The Chiefs finished the 2006 campaign with a +4 turnover mark (30 takes/26 gives), denoting the 15th time in the last 17 seasons that KC has boasted a positive turnover mark. The Chiefs have forced at least one turnover in 19 consecutive regular season games, the longest active streak in the NFL. Winning the turnover battle is always critical, especially in the postseason. During the 2005 NFL Playoffs, teams with a positive turnover margin registered a 7-3 record. Kansas City is 5-1 when plus in the turnover column in The Chiefs will face a Colts squad that is 17-3 (.850) at home under Tony Dungy with a positive turnover differential. The Colts have won eight consecutive games when plus in the turnover column. The Colts were -3 (5 takes/8 gives) in their four losses in Putting Pressure on Manning is a Must for the Chiefs In three career playoff victories Colts QB Peyton Manning has completed 79.8% (71 of 89) of his passes and has averaged ypg in those contests, throwing 12 TDs and one INT, good for a rating. In six playoff setbacks, Manning has completed 52.6% (122 of 232) of his passes and has averaged ypg in those games, throwing three TDs and seven INTs, numbers that translate into a 61.4 rating. The Chiefs defense has only allowed one 300-yard passer this season. Over the final three games of the regular season, KC s defense limited opposing passers to an average of just ypg. During that span opposing QBs completed 58 of 100 passes (58.0%) for 629 yards with only one TD and five INTs, numbers that translate into a 59.1 rating. KC also registered 9.0 sacks and forced two fumbles over that stretch. KC will face a Colts offense that has allowed an NFL-low 15.0 sacks in Scoring Defense is Especially Important During the Posteason Typically the team that hoists the Lombardi Trophy boasts one of the league s top scoring defenses. The last 22 Super Bowl champions have ranked in the NFL s top 10 in scoring defense. The Chiefs and Colts will both be attempting to break that string in The last team outside the league s top 10 in scoring defense to claim an NFL title was the 83 L.A. Raiders who ranked 13th in the league at 21.1 ppg. Kansas City finished the 2006 regular season tied for 11th in the NFL in scoring defense, allowing 19.7 ppg. That defensive performance marked the highest ranking by the Chiefs in that category since the club led the NFL in scoring defense by permitting just 14.5 ppg in 97. It also marked the first time since 97 that the Chiefs have allowed fewer than 20.0 ppg in a season. Indianapolis finished the 2006 campaign ranked 23rd in the NFL in scoring defense, allowing 22.5 ppg. Chiefs-Colts Scoring Stats to Watch The Chiefs allowed just 17.1 ppg in their nine regular season victories in 2006 and held 10 of their opponents to 20 points or less. KC will be faced with the task of attempting to contain a Colts offense that tied for second in the NFL in scoring offense, averaging 26.7 ppg. However, the Chiefs did limit the NFL s top scoring offense (San Diego 30.8 ppg) to just 20 points in their most recent meeting with the AFC s top playoff seed on 12/17. Indianapolis is 32-2 (.941) in regular season and playoff action when scoring 30 points or more under Tony Dungy. The Colts are 19-1 (.950) at the RCA Dome when reaching the 30-point plateau under Dungy, including a streak of 16 consecutive victories. Indianapolis is 2-2 all-time in postseason games at the RCA Dome. In a pair of home playoff victories vs. Denver (1/4/04 & 1/9/05), the Colts have averaged 45.0 ppg. In a pair of home playoff losses vs. Tennessee (1/16/00) and vs. Pittsburgh (1/15/06), the Colts were held to an average 17.0 ppg. Chiefs Set to Face a Playoff-Tested Colts Squad Indianapolis owns one of the league s most seasoned postseason rosters. The Colts have qualified for the postseason for five consecutive years, the longest active streak in the NFL. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are making just their second postseason appearance in the past nine seasons. Eight of Kansas City s 22 starters 36.4% of the club s starting lineup have never played in a postseason contest. That list includes: DE Jared Allen, T Jordan Black, DT Ron Edwards, DE Tamba Hali, LB Derrick Johnson, RB Larry Johnson, WR Samie Parker and TE Kris Wilson. However, the Chiefs do boast five players who reached a conference championship game during their NFL tenure. 7 THE LAST GAME Chiefs 35, Jaguars 30 January 1, 2007 Arrowhead Stadium 77,500 JACKSONVILLE KANSAS CITY In a New Year s Eve match-up of two teams with faint playoff hopes, the Chiefs found a way to keep their postseason chances alive with a win over the Jaguars. The Kansas City win propelled the Chiefs to a 9-7 record and a berth in the playoffs, an unlikely scenario for a club that started the season 0-2. In addition to piling up three TDs on the day, RB Larry Johnson also etched his name in both the NFL and Chiefs record books. He surpassed his own Chiefs single-season record for rushing yards with 1,789 and topped the 100-yard mark for the 11th time this season, also a franchise record. Johnson s 33 carries on the day also put him at 416 on the season, the most in NFL history for a single season. For the third time on the season, rookie S Bernard Pollard got his hand on a punt, this time blocking P Chris Hanson s kick and recovering the ball in the end zone for a TD and a 7-0 lead. Jacksonville would tie the game at 7-7 in the first minute of the second quarter when QB David Garrard dumped a short pass to RB Fred Taylor who ran for a 26-yard touchdown. After Kansas City went three-and-out on its next possession, the Jaguars got a 33-yard field goal to move in front Johnson brought the Chiefs back with a 40-yard run into the Red Zone, then scored on a one-yard TD dive on fourth-andgoal to grab a lead midway through the second quarter. The Chiefs would strike again just before the half on a flea flicker that Johnson lateraled to QB Trent Green, who tossed a perfect 35-yard TD to WR Eddie in the corner of the end zone to stretch the lead to at the half. On Jacksonville s second play of the second half CB Ty Law intercepted a screen pass at the Jaguars 18-yard line and returned it down to the two. On the very next play Johnson took the handoff and raced around the left end untouched for his second touchdown of the game pushing the lead to QB Quinn Gray then entered in relief and rallied the Jaguars with 19 and 32-yard completions before scoring on a nine-yard TD scramble. The Chiefs would also use their backup signal caller when QB Damon Huard replaced an injured Green for one series. Huard promptly engineered a seven-play, 75-yard drive that featured a 40-yard juggling catch by Kennison and a 12-yard scoring run from Johnson to go ahead Gray and the Jaguars refused to quit, quickly finding the end zone on another TD run from Gray, this time from 17 yards out to pull within 11 points at late in the third quarter. The Jaguars would trim the lead to when they recovered a Chiefs fumble near midfield and converted on a five-yard TD run up from RB Maurice Jones-Drew. However, Jacksonville s two-point attempt failed when Gray mishandled the exchange from center with 5:00 left in regulation. Needing to kill the clock, Edwards went back to his workhorse Johnson to drive home the victory. The Chiefs handed the ball off to their Pro Bowl runner nine times for 27 hard-earned yards on the drive, allowing them to eat up the final 5:00 and seal the win.
