THE MATCH-UP Kansas City officially inaugurates the 2005 campaign when it makes the short 27-mile trek from training camp in River Falls, WI to face Minnesota at the Metrodome on Friday, August 12th. The Chiefs will actually have a shorter trip to the game than the Vikings, who will make a 75-mile journey from their training camp home in Mankato, MN. The Chiefs and Vikings both boast explosive offenses and each squad made several significant off-season acquisitions to bolster their defenses in Kansas City led the NFL in total offense for the first time in franchise history by averaging yards per game a year ago. The Chiefs also set an NFL record with 398 first downs and ranked second in the league by averaging 30.2 points per game. KC returns 10 of its 11 offensive starters from its 2004 regular season finale, including six players who have earned a Pro Bowl berth with the club: QB Trent Green, RB Priest Holmes, TE Tony Gonzalez, FB Tony Richardson, G Will Shields, T Willie Roaf and G Brian Waters. To complement the club s offensive corps, the Chiefs added three former Pro Bowlers (CB Patrick Surtain, LB Kendrell Bell and S Sammy Knight) to their defense in the off-season. The club also utilized its firstround draft choice on University of Texas LB Derrick Johnson and made a trade with Tennessee for DE Carlos Hall. The Vikings earned a Wild Card berth with an 8-8 record and claimed a postseason victory at Green Bay a year ago thanks to a highpowered offense triggered by Pro Bowl QB Daunte Culpepper. Minnesota ranked fourth in the NFL in total offense a year ago (396.2 ypg) and was second in pass offense (282.3 ypg), while ranking sixth in scoring (25.3 ppg). Minnesota also made its share of off-season defensive improvements, adding the likes of CB Fred Smoot, LB Sam Cowart, LB Napoleon Harris, DT Pat Williams and FS Darren Sharper to its roster. KC won the last preseason meeting by a count at Arrowhead (8/16/03). The 2005 preseason opener for both squads marks Kansas City s first preseason visit to the Metrodome since 98. The most memorable contest between these two clubs was the first meaningful one as Kansas City posted a 23-7 win over Minnesota in Super Bowl IV. These two teams have also battled in several other noteworthy contests. The Vikings won the first-ever regular season showdown between the two clubs in the 70 season-opener. The Vikings also won their initial appearance at Arrowhead in the 74 season finale which was 2003 HOF enshrinee Hank Stram s last game as the Chiefs head coach. Kansas City s first regular season win over the Vikings was a 10-6 decision in the 81 season finale, the last game ever played at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, Minnesota before the club moved to the Metrodome for the 82 campaign.

He is one of just four coaches in NFL history to lead two different teams to the Super Bowl and has twice been named NFL Coach of the Year. The Calistoga, California native began his NFL coaching career with the L.A. Rams ( 69, 71-73) serving as the team s special teams, RBs, and QBs coach and offensive coordinator. During his tenure as head coach in Philadelphia ( 76-82), he compiled a record. In 78, Vermeil guided the Eagles to their first playoff appearance in 12 years. He then led the 80 Eagles to a 12-4 record to earn a trip to Super Bowl XV. Vermeil returned to the sidelines as the head coach of St. Louis for three seasons ( 97-99), guiding the Rams to a 13-3 record in 99, concluding the year with a win in Super Bowl XXXIV. A standout quarterback at San Jose State, Vermeil served as an assistant at Stanford ( 65-68) and UCLA ( 70) before taking over the head coaching duties for the Bruins from In 75, he led UCLA to a victory over #1 ranked Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. VERMEIL FAST FACTS His 34 regular season wins with the Chiefs are third-highest total in team history by a head coach behind only Hank Stram (124) and Marty Schottenheimer (101). Has guided the Chiefs to a (.625) regular season record over the past two seasons. New England (28-4), Philadelphia (25-7), Indianapolis (24-8) and Pittsburgh (21-11) are the only clubs with better records over that span. Marty Schottenheimer (177), Bill Parcells (154), Bill Cowher (130), Joe Gibbs (130) and Mike Holmgren (125) are the only active NFL head coaches with more regular season wins than Vermeil (110). Tice entered the coaching ranks after a 14-year NFL playing career as a tight end, playing in 177 games (109 starts). He caught 107 passes for 894 yards and 11 TDs during his tenure with Seattle ( 81-88, 90-91), Washington ( 89) and Minnesota ( 92-93, 95). In 2002, Tice was named the TE on Seattle s all-time team by Football News. Born in Bayshore, NY on February 2, 1959, Tice was the recipient of the Byron Whizzer White Humanitarian Award in 87. A two-year starter at QB for Maryland, he completed 71 of 140 passes with five TDs as a senior in 80, when his back-up was future Cincinnati Bengals Pro Bowler Boomer Esiason. WHAT VERMEIL IS SAYING... On the team s chances this year: I believe this should be the best football team we ve had since I ve been here, especially on defense. Whether it will be or not will be dependent upon how we as coaches coach and how players respond to training camp. On the offense: I think if this offensive team was in one of the big markets it would be different. We set numerous team records. If you re in New York or Chicago that might be a big thing, but we re not really too concerned who gets the credit. We ve just got to get so we re a better football team and if the offense has to get better for us to be a better football team than they have to get better. The challenge when you re the best is to get better. There are areas of our game that can get better. On the defense: I don t think I ve ever had as much talent on defense as we have right now. We re so much further ahead defensively than we were last year at the same time. Even on the mental side of it as the physical side. It s not a new defense, it s the better understanding of it. It s the growth of the personnel that was here; it s the addition of the personnel that we brought in including the draft choice. It s impressive. We will be better. I don t know how much better, but we will be better. On QB Trent Green s longevity and productivity: That s a real testament to the offensive line. Obviously if you go through four knee operations and then come onto an NFL team and the offensive line is not really sound and really good, it s probably going to give you fits. Our offensive line happens to be a really good offensive line. That s helped. The other thing is the philosophy within the overall passing game. It s a very quick, rhythmic passing game and a guy with experience knows where he s going with the ball quicker. He doesn t hang on to it very much. So, I think it all fits together. On the Chiefs LBs: I ve never been on the field with this many talented LBs, anywhere. How long it s going to take them to play football I don t know, but they look good. Derrick Johnson has done awfully well as a rookie in picking things up. He s really done a good job. He s going to be very competitive to start early.

Hall nd 5th Sacks Allen th T21st THE 2005 CHIEFS The Chiefs are seeking to rebound from a 7-9 record in Al Saunders returns for his fifth season as Kansas City s assistant head coach/offensive coordinator, while Gunther Cunningham is in his second campaign in his second stint as KC s defensive coordinator. Kansas City continued its offensive productivity a year ago, setting an NFL record with 398 first downs. Over the past two seasons, the Chiefs have registered 63 rushing TDs, tying the Packers for the best two-year total in NFL history. The Chiefs led the NFL in total offense for the first time in 2004, averaging yards per game. KC also ranked in the NFL s top five in each of the four major offensive categories for the first time in team history in 2004: scoring offense (2nd 30.2 ppg), total offense (1st ypg), pass offense (4th ypg) and rush offense (5th ypg). In total, the Chiefs established or tied 19 single-season team records in 2004, including marks for completions (370), passing yards (4,406), passing first downs (228) and third-down conversions (47.2%). The club s 30.2 ppg scoring average ranked second in the league. In addition, the Chiefs scored 30+ points in five consecutive games, a first in team history. KC s offense also averaged 54.1 advances per game (rushes and completions), the best mark in the league in The Chiefs have added several new faces to their defensive unit in 2005, headlined by a trio of former Pro Bowl performers. CB Patrick Surtain was acquired in an off-season trade with Miami and earned two Pro Bowl berths ( ) with that club. He is joined in the KC secondary by former Dolphins S Sammy Knight, who was a Pro Bowler for New Orleans in LB Kendrell Bell, who earned NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and a Pro Bowl bid with the Steelers in 2001, joined the club as a UFA from Pittsburgh. KC also bolstered its roster with the addition of DE Carlos Hall in an off-season trade with Tennessee. LB Derrick Johnson (D1-05) won the Butkus Award as the nation s top collegiate linebacker and is also expected to make an immediate contribution. Former Pro Bowl RB Michael Bennett (D1-01) returns from a foot injury and anchors a deep backfield that also includes RBs Moe Williams and Mewelde Moore (D4b-04). 4 QUARTERBACKS Kansas City returns all three of its signal callers from 2004, including Trent Green who has started 64 consecutive games for the club dating back to Green ranks sixth in NFL history with a 87.9 career rating, a figure that is the top mark in KC annals. Todd Collins is in his eighth season with Kansas City and his fifth campaign as the club s top backup to Green. Damon Huard enters his second campaign with the Chiefs and served as the club s third QB in James Kilian (D7-05) is entering his first NFL camp and will compete for a roster spot. QB TRENT GREEN Has started 64 games with KC, completing 1,282 of 2,072 passes (61.87%) for 16,103 yards with 94 TDs and 66 INTs, for a 87.9 rating. His 16,103 yards passing with the Chiefs are the third-best mark in team history. He needs just 1,175 more yards to overtake QB Bill Kenney (17,277) for second in franchise annals. Ranks first in team history with an 87.9 passer rating, completion percentage, yard completions, a 7.77-yard average gain and 20 career 300-yard passing days. His 94 TDs with KC are the third-highest total in Chiefs history, needing 12 more to pass QB Bill Kenney (105) for second. Has started 64 consecutive games, the longest streak by a QB in team history. Has led the Chiefs to 34 wins, tying Bill Kenney for the second-most by a starting QB in team history. His 16,103 passing yards since joining KC in 2001 rank second in the NFL behind only IND QB Peyton Manning (17,155). QB DAMON HUARD Has played in 38 games (six starts) with MIA ( 97-00), NE ( ) and KC (2004), connecting on 170 of 289 attempts (58.8%) for 1,691 yards with, nine TDs and eight INTs, good for a 74.3 rating. RUNNING BACKS Three-time Pro Bowler Priest Holmes returns after missing the final eight games of 2004 with a strained right MCL. Holmes is the all-time leading rusher in KC history with 5,482 yards and needs 91 more rushing attempts to bypass Christian Okoye (1,246) for the most carries in franchise annals. Larry Johnson (D1-03) will serve as Holmes primary backup once again in 2005 after registering 581 yards, three 100-yard games and nine TDs in Twotime Pro Bowl FB Tony Richardson is one of the league s best at his craft. He will pair with Robert Holcombe to give KC one of the league s top fullback duos. Others competing at WR include: Craphonso Thorpe (D4-05), Jeris McIntryre (D6-04), ex-titan Darrell Hill, NFLEL veteran John Booth and rookie FA Nathaniel Curry. Gonzalez led all NFL pass catchers with 102 receptions in 2004, the highest total in league history by a tight end. Jason Dunn possesses the size of an offensive tackle and is a key element of the club s rushing attack. Kris Wilson (D2b-04) is a versatile performer who can line up in a variety of formations. He returns to action after missing the majority of the 2004 campaign with a broken left fibula. Other tight ends in camp include rookie FAs Edwin Thompson and Willie Walden. TE TONY GONZALEZ Ranks first on the Chiefs all-time receiving chart with 570 catches. Is just the third tight end in NFL history to establish himself as his franchise s career leader in receptions, joining Cleveland s Ozzie Newsome (662) and Denver s Shannon Sharpe (815). His 6,905 career receiving yards rank second in team annals, needing 402 more yards to overtake WR Otis Taylor (7,306). Is third in NFL history among TEs with 570 career catches and is fourth with 6,905 receiving yards. His 54 career TDs are tied with Wesley Walls for the fourth-highest total by a TE in NFL history. Has caught a pass in 68 consecutive games for the second-longest streak in team annals, trailing only WR Stephone Paige (83 straight). Those 9.0 sacks were the second-most by a rookie in Chiefs history, trailing only the 10.0 sacks compiled by LB Derrick Thomas in 89. His 25.5 career sacks rank ninth in Chiefs history and he needs 4.0 more to bypass DT Dan Saleaumua (29.0) for eighth. DE CARLOS HALL Played in 48 games (31 starts) with TEN ( ), recording 208 tackles (127 solo), 13.5 sacks (-55.5 yards), 31 QB pressures, a FR, two FFs and five PDs. DE JIMMY WILKERSON Has played in 27 games with KC, producing 34 tackles (15 solo), a half of a sack (-4.5 yards), seven QB pressures and a PD. DT JUNIOR SIAVII Has played in 12 games, amassing 12 tackles (seven solo), a sack (-9.0 yards) and three QB pressures. 6 LINEBACKERS The Chiefs made several significant off-season acquisitions to upgrade their linebacking corps, headlined by Kendrell Bell who signed as a UFA from PIT. The 2001 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year also earned a Pro Bowl berth in his initial NFL campaign. Bell is expected to man the starting job at the ROLB post. Shawn Barber is attempting to bounce back from a torn left ACL that cost him the final eight games of the 2004 campaign. Barber produced 141 tackles and 5.0 sacks in his debut campaign with Kansas City in Five-year veteran Quinton Caver and rookie FA Kris Griffin also work at ROLB. Kawika Mitchell (D2-03) returns for his third season and is expected to once again be the starter at MLB. Rich Scanlon and Boomer Grigsby (D5a-05) are expected to compete for the top backup spot at MLB. Mike Maslowski is still rehabbing an off-season knee surgery and has not returned to practice. Derrick Johnson (D1-05) won the Butkus Award as the nation s top linebacker and the Bronco Nagurski Trophy as the country s top collegiate defensive player as a senior at the University of Texas. Johnson will compete for the starting spot at LOLB along with fourth-year pro Scott Fujita (D5-02) who has opened every game at that spot the past two seasons. Also working at LOLB is second-year pro Keyaron Fox (D3-04) and Gary Stills (D3a-99), who earned a Pro Bowl berth as a special teams phenom following the 2003 campaign. Stills moved back to LOLB in 2005 from DE. NFLEL veteran LB Kevin DeRonde joined the squad in camp on August 2nd. LB KENDRELL BELL In 47 games (44 starts) for PIT ( ), recorded 261 tackles (212 solo), 18.0 sacks ( yds), one FR, three FFs, an INT and five PDs. Started 16 games as a rookie with PIT, producing 88 tackles (74 solo), 9.0 sacks (-84.0 yards), and two forced fumbles to be named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year by Sports Illustrated. LB KAWIKA MITCHELL Has appeared in 27 career games (18 starts), registering 110 tackles (81 solo), a sack (-0.0 yards), two FRs, an INT, 13 QB pressures and six PDs. Played in 15 games (12 starts) with the Chiefs in 2004, ranking second on the squad with a career-high 85 tackles (62 solo). LB QUINTON CAVER Has seen action in 45 games (four starts) with PHI ( ) and KC ( ), tallying 46 tackles (31 solo), three PDs, three QB pressures and 40 special teams tackles. LB RICH SCANLON Led NFL Europe with a team-record 94 tackles (68 solo) with Berlin and was the named NFLEL Defensive Most Valuable Player. LB GARY STILLS Has played in 72 games (one start), amassing 80 tackles (41 solo), 7.5 sacks (-62.5 yards), four FRs, three PDs and 19 QB pressures. Ranks second in Chiefs history with 123 special teams tackles, needing 25 more to surpass LB Greg Manusky (147) for first. DEFENSIVE BACKS The Chiefs made two marquee acquisitions to their secondary, adding a pair of Pro Bowlers and former Dolphins teammates in CB Patrick Surtain and S Sammy Knight. Surtain earned a pair of Pro Bowl berths with Miami ( ) and came to Kansas City in an off-season trade. Knight, who is expected to start at the SS post for Kansas City, earned a Pro Bowl berth as a member of the Saints in CB Eric Warfield (D7a-98) enters his fifth campaign as a starter for the Chiefs. Although eligible to compete in the preseason, Warfield will be sidelined for the first four games of the 2005 regular season, meaning that CB Dexter McCleon has taken the bulk of the snaps with the first unit at training camp. Second-year CB Benny Sapp has seen extensive action in the nickel during camp. Recently-acquired veterans CB Ashley Ambrose (192 career games) and CB Dwayne Washington (175 career games) give the Chiefs experienced depth to go with rookie CBs Alphonso Hodge (D5b-03) and Justin Perkins. S Greg Wesley (D3-00) is making the move to FS in 2005 after starting 72 games at SS over the past five seasons. S Jerome Woods (D1-96), who earned a Pro Bowl berth in 2003, is rebounding from a knee injury that cost him the final six games of 2004 and is expected to work behind Wesley. S Shaunard Harts provides depth at safety along with William Bartee (D2-00), who makes the move to that position after working at CB the past five seasons. Other returnees at safety include Willie Pile (D7b-03) and All-NFLEL performer Scott Connot. CB PATRICK SURTAIN Played in 108 games (82 starts) for MIA ( 98-04), producing 398 tackles (314 solo), 6.5 sacks (-47.0 yards), 29 INTs (298 yards) with two TDs, 96 PDs, four FRs and three FFs. Dating back to 2000, only Ss Darren Sharper (31) and Tony Parish (26) have registered more INTs than Surtain (25). SS SAMMY KNIGHT Has played in 126 games (121 starts) with NO ( 97-02) and MIA ( ), registering 862 tackles (587 solo), 5.0 sacks (-26.0 yards), 35 INTs for 594 yards with two TDs, 74 PDs, 11 FRs and 10 FFs. 7 LAST TIME - PRESEASON Chiefs 26, Vikings 16 August 16, 2003 Arrowhead Stadium 75,634 MINNESOTA KANSAS CITY Venerable K Morten Andersen booted four field goals and K Jose Cortez connected on another for the Chiefs, helping propel Kansas City to a preseason victory vs. Minnesota at Arrowhead. Chiefs QBs combined to throw for 301 yards and a pair of TDs in the contest, while the club s running backs combined for 34 carries and 149 yards. After WR Dante Hall returned the opening kickoff 42 yards, QB Trent Green orchestrated a 10-play, 38-yard drive that was capped off with a 38-yard FG by Andersen to give the Chiefs an early 3-0 lead. Kansas City s defense forced the Vikings to go three-and-out on their initial drive, but a muffed punt gave the ball back to Minnesota on the Kansas City 14-yard line. Four plays later, RB Onterrio Smith plowed into the end zone from one yard out to give the Vikings a 7-3 advantage. Kansas City closed the gap to 7-6 with a 21-yard Andersen FG and on its next possession struck quickly with a two-play scoring drive. After a 17-yard run by RB Derrick Blaylock, Green hit a streaking WR Marc Boerigter for a 59-yard TD strike to give the Chiefs a 13-7 edge. The two squads traded field goals to give Kansas City a halftime advantage as Andersen connected on a 42-yard FG out as time expired in the second quarter. After both teams exchanged punts to open the second half, a Vikings drive was halted when RB Larry Ned fumbled at the Chiefs 18-yard line after a 15-yard gain. Powered on the ground by rookie RB Larry Johnson, Kansas City marched into Vikings territory and pushed its lead to thanks to a 46-yard Cortez FG. Kansas City got a short field to open the fourth quarter thanks to a 25-yard punt return by WR LaShaun Ward, setting the Chiefs up at the Minnesota 47-yard line. After a 35-yard completion to WR Chris Horn, QB Todd Collins then hit TE Dwayne Blakley for a 12-yard scoring pass to make the count in favor of the Chiefs.
